THE EMILY SISSON SPECIAL Emily Sisson is one of the greatest US Distance Runners of all-time, and she still has her best running ahead of her. At every level, Emily has been ABSOLUTELY dominant. In high school, Emily qualified for the prestigious Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships all four years, a feat that has barely been replicated throughout history. In college, at Providence College, Emily was a two-time NCAA champion, winning titles in the 5000m at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships in 2015. She also set a collegiate indoor record for the women's 5000m with a time of15:12.22 at the Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships. Emily turned pro in 2015 with New Balance and continued to train under her college coach, Ray Tracey, and has all the way up to the present day. As a pro, Emily has set multiple American Records, including the American Record in the Marathon, which stands to this day. It was set at the 2022 Chicago Marathon, where she ran 2:18:29. Emily made the US Olympic team this past summer in the Marathon after placing 2nd at the US Olympic Trials in Orlando in February. In today's conversation, Emily takes me through the biggest lessons and learnings from her successful career, her years in high school and how she's always fallen back on her love for the sport, her ambitions for the future, and so much more. I absolutely loved this conversation and the opportunity to pick Emily's brain on so many topics. This one is packed with wisdom! Take the time to listen to it. Tap into the Emily Sisson Special. "We'll see what happens. We'll all find out on Sunday.” A brief chat with Keira D'Amato, Emma Bates and Sara Hall before the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Unfortunately did not have the time to catch Betsy Saina. From our race preview on CITIUSMAG.com: The American showdown may become a chase for Emily Sisson's American record, as three of the five fastest women in U.S. history will be on the start line alongside 2021 Chicago runner-up Emma Bates, Chavez's pick to take down the record. Keira D'Amato, who held this record for just under nine months in 2022, will be racing 26.2 miles for the first time since moving to Utah to train with coach Ed Eyestone. We won't know until Sunday exactly what her and Eyestone's race plan looks like, but don't be surprised if she's in the mix for the top American crown. 2024 U.S. leader Betsy Saina, whose fifth-place finish in Tokyo in 2:19:17 was a huge leap forward, figures to be a prominent player as well. 2016 Olympic 1500m champion Matthew Centrowitz is set to be pacing this pack as they go after 2:18:29, so that will be something to keep an eye on even if the leaders are well ahead.
"Sometimes a short build up can do a miracle. So I'm hoping for the miracle in Chicago!" In a stacked field of elite runners, Betsy Saina is absolutely one to watch at this weekend's Chicago Marathon. Betsy is a 2:19 marathoner — a time that makes her the third-fastest American woman marathoner (behind Emily Sisson and Keira D'Amato). She's a 2016 Olympian who competed in the 10,000m, and she's the 2024 USATF 25K Champion and women-only American record holder in that distance. She's a three-time NCAA champion who ran at Iowa State University, and she currently lives and trains primarily in Kenya. In this conversation, Betsy — who is a mom to three-year-old Kalya — talks about how she's feeling heading into the Chicago Marathon. She talks about the fall earlier this year that derailed her training and set her back several weeks, and about how she's come back from a DNF at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Plus, whether or not she's planning to go for an American Record in Chicago, what it's like training alongside Joyciline Kepkosgei, and more. Running Chicago? Here's everything you need to know. “The expectation was we want to chase this and put her on the line in a way to be able to compete. Physically, I think things went really smooth. This is probably the best build she's had in the eight years I've coached her. Mentally, it probably wasn't the best build. There were some battles that she faced and the race never tells the whole story. Being someone that saw what she overcame to make this team is what I think is going to make this one really special.” Newly minted Olympian Courtney Wayment and Coach Diljeet Taylor join us live in Eugene after Courtney finished runner-up in the U.S. Olympic Trials steeplechase. Coach Taylor shares about Courtney's ability to overcome challenges as she worked towards the Trials and what it's been like coaching Courtney for the past eight years. “We are going into a new phase of track and field. And with that new phase, there has to be a new element. The standard is shifting, it's only a matter of time that the world record is in danger. I'm not saying by who, but I'm just saying that if the standard keeps on going lower… it's only a matter of time before 19.9 will get you sixth.” 2x Olympian Joseph Fahnbulleh joins us live in Eugene after competing at the African Championships this past week. A month after dropping out of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials after about 21 miles, Betsy Saina made the decision to enter the 2024 Tokyo Marathon and it paid off massively. Saina put together a very short two-week build-up and ended up finishing fifth in 2:19:17. It was a PR by more than two minutes and moved her to No. 3 on the U.S. all-time women's marathoning list behind Emily Sisson and Keira D'Amato. In this episode, we talk about how she made the decision to race Tokyo, how she structured the training for it and why she believes her coach saying that she's got the fitness to run 2:17 someday soon. Plus, why she's got her sights set on representing the United States at the 2026 World Championships in Tokyo. "Starting to talk with Alistair (Cragg), I was really excited about his ambition and excitement for the (PUMA Elite) team. He wanted to create a situation where we would be contending for World teams, Olympic teams and eventually contending on those bigger stages as well. At first, hearing those goals sounded a little bit scary. Exciting, but scary. So it's really cool to start seeing some of it actually come together." My guest for today's episode is Fiona O'Keeffe – the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials champion. She ran the fastest marathon debut in American history with a 2:22:10 performance to win and also break the previous Marathon Trials record held by Shalane Flanagan from 2012. She will be joined at the Paris Olympics by American record holder Emily Sisson and Dakotah Lindwurm. O'Keeffe was so impressive in the Orlando heat and pressed from the front to pull away from her competitors about 19 miles into the race. She ran all of the last few miles under 5:30 but threw down a 5:09 at Mile 25. She ended up winning by more than 30 seconds. In this episode, we chat about how she mastered her marathon debut, when she knew the 26.2-mile distance was calling, her excitement over the state of U.S. women's marathoning and we had to ask about the blood on her bib, which was caused by chafing from a gel that was stashed in her top. A star is born in U.S. marathoning. “I'm excited to be back there because you never know how many chances you get to represent the U.S. on the global stage. I feel like I've been really fortunate in my career and I've gotten a lot of really cool opportunities, but still - they don't happen often. So I try to really savor the moments when something big happens, when I qualify for a team, and just really take advantage of the opportunity.” American record holder Emily Sisson, who finished second in this year's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:22:42, re-joins the show. She finished behind Fiona O'Keeffe and ahead of Dakotah Lindwurm, which is your team for the Paris Olympics. In this episode, we recap Emily's race and how she overcame some struggles of her own yet kept her composure to qualify for her second Olympics. This will be the first time that she runs the marathon at the Summer Games. She shares some insights into covering key moves during the race, strategy talk with Keira D'Amato beforehand and a little bit on the sisterhood of American women's marathoning greats. Hey there, runners and fitness enthusiasts! Welcome to the fourth episode of the Ask Alli Spin-Off, where we dive deep into training and running. I'm your host, Coach Alli, and I'm here to guide you on this journey to help you reach your fitness goals.Today's episode of 'Ask Alli' takes a turn after viewing the rerun of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and recapping the race, learnings, and takeaways for all of us to apply to our running training! I share my biggest takeaways and lessons for ALL of us to apply to our runs, to stay process-oriented, and to learn to love the journey, not the outcome of one race. There are some wins to celebrate! Congratulations to three women who made the Olympic Team: Fiona O'Keeffe Wins The U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in her First-Ever Marathon, followed by Emily Sisson and Dakotah Lindwurm. And to two men, brothers, and training partners with guaranteed spots on the men's Olympic Team, too! Conner Mantz ran 2:07:48 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, and Clayton Young tallied a time of 2:08:00 in Chicago.I am so happy and proud of all of us, of our sport. I am still hysterically crying, just feeling all the emotions and loving how well these people ran their hearts out the way they did today. Thank you to everyone behind the scenes who made today's event possible and viewable for the public. Your hard work does not go unnoticed. We all appreciate it. I can't find a word for how I feel right now because inspiration doesn't do justice.

"Pressure comes when things are going well." The American Record Holder and the Irishman return! Today on the Ali on the Run Show, Emily Sisson and Shane Quinn are here to talk about their respective experiences at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, where Emily ran a 2:22:09, finished seventh, and was the top American woman of the day — and Shane ate omelettes. While this didn't end up being the race Emily trained, hoped, and planned for — that darn side stitch! — both Emily and Shane agree that this was ultimately a good day. They share their top moments and memories from the weekend (spoiler: Rivers), talk about what's next (vacation, and then the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials!), and offer their thoughts on American distance women vs. the world. “It's not that I don't want to run faster because I do, but it's just not what motivates me to get out of bed in the morning. I want to be on a podium again at a world major, I want to finish in the top three, I want to fight for a medal someday, or at least give myself a shot. And I want to be on another Olympic team. Those are the things that get me out of bed.” U.S. marathon record holder Emily Sisson is back for her fourth time on the show. She just finished in as the top American and seventh overall at the Chicago Marathon in 2:22:09 despite battling a side stitch for the final eight miles. Unfortunately, the broadcast did not show much of Sisson's race for the second consecutive year. Last year, she broke the American record in 2:18:29 on the course and we had her on the podcast to unpack that race. We're keeping the tradition alive here and breaking down how it all played out for her. Sisson will now enjoy a break and then prepare for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials on February 3rd in Orlando, where she will try to make her second Olympic team and her first as a marathoner. She's part of a group of athletes meeting with USA Track and Field to try and adjust the start time so it's not at noon in the potential heat and humidity of Orlando so we discuss that a bit and who she may be watching heading into the race. On Sunday, October 8, the penultimate World Marathon Major of 2023 kicks off through Millennium Park and through the streets of Chicago. The site of multiple American and world records, the Chicago Marathon is often considered one of the fastest courses in the United States and always draws strong domestic and international elite fields chasing fast times. Last year, the women's race saw an American record from Emily Sisson and the second-fastest performance of all time (at the time) from winner Ruth Chepngetich. Chicago's men's course record of 2:03:45 was the world record when it was set in 2013 by Dennis Kimetto and the women's course record of 2:14:04 set by Brigid Kosgei in 2019 was the world record until a few weeks ago – this is the place to run fast. The first wave of runners goes off at 8:30 a.m. E.T. (men and women start together). Right now, the forecast looks promising, with a low of 46F and a high of 57F. It'll be a little breezy with 10-15mph winds, but the looped Chicago course lined in many spots by high rises is relatively tolerant to wind. We could be in for some seriously special racing! CITIUS MAG's team (Chris Chavez, Kyle Merber and Declan Murray) will preview all the top storylines and athletes to watch. Professional runner for Team ZAP Endurance Tristin Van Ord tells the story of how it all went down from her viewpoint racing in the 2023 USATF 20km National Championships, which just took place September 4 in New Haven, CT. This 2023 season has been full of success as well as learning experiences for Van Ord. She started the year running her fastest marathon ever—she set a PB by over two minutes—placing first American and fourth woman at the Houston Marathon in January. Going into the summer, however, Van Ord, who has OCD, began to experience worsening symptoms of the disorder. In particular, those manifested in intense performance anxiety and insomnia. But through the summer to now, more race experience and therapeutic work has put Van Ord on a path to better manage the impact of OCD, to the benefit of her running and racing. The story of the 20k champs is testament to Van Ord's progress and also to her growing savvy and strength in the elite ranks of US road running. Van Ord tells the whole story in this episode, about experiencing and managing OCD, how she's learned and grown from her challenges, how she's improved as a competitor, and how the 20k champs unfolded, to an excellent result. The USATF 20km National Championships is a part of the championship series of races, for various different distances, that happen around the country throughout the year. Racers have a chance to earn a national title, as well as to earn prize money and points based on finishing places; points go toward the overall series placing. The top three places in the series after the 20km champs are Ednah Kurgat, Nell Rojas, and Emily Sisson. Both Kurgat and Rojas have been featured in our Race Report episodes this year. You can catch up on earlier road races in the series through our Race Reports. Each report features one runner's perspective on how it all went down, to give you an inside look at these championship events. "We were like, what if Emily and Keira tied? What if they cross the line together and they tied? And we said, well what if we had a cage match? Like it was a tie, and then it came down to a cage match?" Their wives are the fastest distance runners in the country. Today, we turn the spotlight to the sidelines to hear from the husbands. Shane Quinn is married to American record holder in the marathon and former American record holder in the half marathon, Emily Sisson. Tony D'Amato is married to American record holder in the half-marathon and former American record holder in the marathon, Keira D'Amato. And while their wives have been breaking — and trading — records, Shane and Tony have been bonding behind the scenes. In this wildly fun episode, Shane and Tony D. talk about what it's like being married to professional runners at the top of their game, about how they've learned to show up and show their support, about how to be a supportive partner without sacrificing their own goals and dreams, and about...cage matches. A surprising amount of talk about cage matches. (Your move, Ryan Hall.) "Being injured it's so easy to think, 'This is it! This is all she wrote! That was a good run, Keira.' You can't help but let your mind go there. It was the fact that I was able to have another high and I never thought I'd get to experience anything like I experienced in Houston with that day. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime thing that I got to experience. Part of me said, 'That might be it!' The fact that I experienced something else that was a different kind of high and win was special. That week, I doubted if I would even make it to the starting line. My daughter was having a hard time with me going so there was a lot of mom guilt going on...It was a lot of doubts and insecurities. The whole time 'hope' was a word that kept coming to mind. I hoped that I could get through it. I hoped that I would have another moment. I hoped that I could hit a big goal like that again. I was positive but you just never know if it will happen. That's where all the emotion came from." Keira D'Amato is back on the show after breaking the American record in the half marathon. Just two weeks ago, she ran 1:06:39 at the Asics Half Marathon in Gold Coast, Australia. She took 13 seconds off the previous record held by Emily Sisson. This is getting fun because Sisson broke D'Amato's marathon American record last fall in Chicago. This was a big moment for D'Amato after she was forced to pull out of April's London Marathon due to inflammation in her knee. She was back to racing in May and is now preparing to run the marathon at the World Championships in Budapest Watch my video with Keira in Central Park here: https://youtu.be/sikQI6sh-Xg Host: Chris Chavez | @Chris_J_Chavez on Instagram Guest: Keira D'Amato | @keiradamato on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

In this episode we speak with Emily Sisson -the current American record holder in both the marathon and half marathon! You will hear Emily talk about her early influences and what a day in her life looks like including habits and routines. Plus, learn how rest and recovery contributed to her faster times.
"I never think that in a race. I never think, 'I've got this.' For better or for worse, I don't ever feel like something's done until it's done." She's done it again! Earlier this month, Emily Sisson broke her own American record in the half marathon, running 1:06:52 at the Houston Half Marathon. She became the first U.S. woman to run under 67 minutes in the half marathon on a record-eligible course, and Emily now owns four out of six of the fastest half marathon times run by an American woman. (She is also the American record holder in the marathon!) In this conversation, Emily talks about the mental side of staying so strong during training and on race day. She shares how she avoids the comparison trap, and how she stays focused on what she can do vs. what her competition is capable of. Plus, what it was like racing alongside longtime training partner Molly Huddle, the secret to that finishing kick, and what the finish line media frenzy is really like. SPONSOR: New Balance. "Picture yourself as the eye of the hurricane, the eye of the storm. You have all this going on around you, but it doesn't affect you." It was a big year for Emily Sisson! The professional runner for New Balance broke not one but two records! In May, Emily became the American record holder in the half marathon, running 1:07:11 at the USATF Half Marathon Championships in Indianapolis. Then, in October, she finished the Chicago Marathon in 2:18:29, effectively becoming the American record holder in the 26.2-mile distance. Now, Emily has her eyes on 2023. She'll race the Houston Half Marathon in January, she's committed to a spring marathon (can't say which one yet!), and she's hoping to run a fall marathon to complete the year. Today, in the span of 26 questions, Emily talks about how life has (or hasn't) changed this year, shares what she's excited about and intrigued by, and talks about her favorite and hardest races to date. "It's been such a big goal for so long. I remember back in college, Ray (Tracey) said to me once, “You're going to set the American record in the marathon someday.' I was like, ‘Okay…' But he said it as a fact like, ‘You're going to do it.' Just because someone has the potential doesn't mean it necessarily will happen. There are so many factors and variables. But he was just like, ‘No. You will set it someday.' It feels like part of a long journey." My guest for this episode is the new American record holder in the women's marathon – Emily Sisson. She just ran 2:18:29 to take 43 seconds off the previous record of 2:19:12 set by Keira D'Amato at the Houston Marathon in January. The race was won by Ruth Chepngetich in 2:14:18 – which is the second-fastest time in history. Sisson now owns two American records She set the half marathon record in 67:11 back in May. We go inside the making of this American record, how she trusted her coach and pacers to make it happen, the appetite to go faster and what's being said in this group chat with U.S. marathoning greats Keira D'Amato, Deena Kastor and Joan Benoit Samuelson.
