What does it mean to live a good life? And can your running practice help you get there? In this episode of The Trailhead, Zoë Rom and Brendan Leonard sit down with Sabrina Little: ultrarunner, philosopher, ethics professor, mom of (soon to be) three, and author of The Examined Run: Why Good People Make Better Runners. Sabrina's work sits at the fascinating intersection of character development, everyday ethics, and endurance sports. She teaches philosophy at Christopher Newport University and writes a beloved ethics column for iRunFar—and she's here to explore how running can be a "laboratory for virtue," where our daily choices shape who we become both on and off the trail. Together, we unpack: How running teaches us about moral character (whether we know it or not) Everyday ethical choices in sport and life—beyond the big scandals Why we hedge the truth (even when no one's watching) What it means to celebrate others' success while still chasing your own The role of humor and humility in building resilience How parenting and philosophy collide And why runners aren't just chasing finish lines—they're practicing becoming better people.
In this episode of the Uphill Athlete Podcast, host Alyssa Clark is joined by Kylee Van Horn and Zoë Rom, creators of the Your Diet Sucks podcast, to discuss the dangers of nutrition myths and fad diets in endurance sports. Kylee and Zoe emphasize the importance of balanced nutrition, critical thinking, and recognizing the emotional and social aspects of food choices. They also offer insights on how athletes can resist diet trends by questioning sources, focusing on fundamentals, and seeking expert guidance. So, are you in a diet cult??In this second episode teaming up with the Your Diet Sucks podcast, Zoë and Kylee discuss the shocking parallels between diet fads and cult dynamics, emphasizing how these trends often create a false sense of community and manipulate individuals into restrictive eating patterns. How do you know if your diet is just a little bit cult-y? There are plenty of red flags, including: extreme language in the messaging (clean eating, detox, this is the best and healthiest diet)social isolation from other groups or ways of eatingmanipulation of your personal identitythe allure of belonging and identity (especially on social media) Instead of blindly following your favorite “influencer,” this episode encourages you to think critically about your choices and the motivations behind them. Recognize those cult-like patterns and consider healthier, more balanced approaches to nutrition and community. It's that time of year when the world is drowning in bad diet advice and unsustainable fitness trends. New year, same diet BS. It's that time of year when the world is drowning in bad diet advice and unsustainable fitness trends. That's why we're teaming up with the Your Diet Sucks podcast to bring you a series of Your Diet Sucks episodes this January aimed at ditching diet culture and getting you ready to fuel your goaks,Hosts Kylee Van Horn, RDN, (@flynutrition3) and Zoë Rom (@carrot_flowers_z) combine years of research, professional expertise (as well as unprofessional nutrition mishaps!), and athlete experience to deliver evidence-backed explorations of nutrition—no fluff, no fads, just science. In this first episode of our Feisty Women's Performance x Your Diet Sucks collab, Zoe and Kylee discuss the history and trends around fasting, low-carb, and (can you even believe it?) NO-carb fueling for ultras. Sure, there is a rich history of fasting practices in most religions, but does that mean we need to become zealots when we're talking about optimal performance? In addition to diving into the historical context of fasting, Kylee and Zoe also talk about:How social media trends influence athlete behavior (for the sake of 'likes' and 'shares')The performance benefits and risks of fasting and low-carb, high-fat dietsThe impact of extreme dietary practices on endurance athletesFinding a shift towards more balanced fueling practices in endurance sportsWhy are athletes drawn to a mentality of doing more with less fuel? Even if you could do it, does that make it the best way to train and race? Even if you think there are short-term benefits, study after study confirms the long-term costs. So, instead of being swept up in the latest social media trend, find the fueling plan that works for both Present You and Future You. While Kylee Van Horn is a Registered Dietitian and founder of Fly Nutrition, writer, lifelong runner and coach. Our discussion today is all about the dangers of social media influencers. We explore how social media and unqualified influencers are shaping (and often distorting) the way female athletes approach their nutrition, body image, and training. No one is immune to influencers –myself, Zoë and Kylee included– and we share why people are “influenced”, the rise of young girls wanting to become influencers, and where athletes fit into this. Supplements are a particular area of concern we dive into, explaining how a lack of regulation and scientific support allows influencers and supplement companies to run wild with marketing claims for expensive and potentially dangerous products. Tina Muir and Zoë Rom's book, "Becoming a Sustainable Runner," takes a three-pronged approach to sustainability. Part one, “Sustain Your Runner's Mind and Body,” examines how runners can strengthen their entire being, including ways to increase self-confidence and practice mindfulness, run and cross train to reduce injury, and replenish themselves to keep running strong throughout their life. This week's podcast is a chapter from that section, “Bolster Your Confidence.” It's excerpted from the audiobook, which is read by Tina, and examines ways to avoid self-sabotage, learn self-acceptance, practice self-compassion, and ditch comparisons, which are one of the biggest barriers to accepting ourselves. The audiobook of "Becoming a Sustainable Runner" is available on Amazon, Audible and iTunes; the print version is available from all major booksellers and digitally through Amazon. When we hear the word “sustainability”, we immediately think that word just has to do with taking care of the planet. But as a runner, it means so much more than that. It also means taking care of you and your community, all while supporting the planet that supports us in our running goals. And in this episode, we're joined by elite athletes Tina Muir and Zoë Rom who share practical advice on how to be a more sustainable runner in these three areas. That way, you can continue to run at your very best while also taking care of the planet along the way. Tina and Zoë Rom are both elite runners with impressive resumes in the running world. And they are also authors of the new book: Becoming a Sustainable Runner: A Guide to Running for Life, Community, and Planet. Tina is a former elite runner, and host of the Running for Real podcast. Since retiring from racing professionally, she approaches running in a way that sustains her physically, mentally, and emotionally, and has discovered that that means getting out on the trails for long distances. She ran her first ultra a few weeks ago, the Bryce Canyon 50 Mile, and finished first female and third overall. She also devotes herself to her other passion, environmentalism, and has worked with the United Nations on campaigns related to climate change and humanitarian affairs. Zoë is an elite trail runner and award-winning journalist who specializes in science, environmental, and adventure journalism. Her ultras include first place finishes at the Crested Butte 100k and Athens Big Fork Trail Marathon, and two consecutive wins at the War Eagle 50k. Her work has appeared in Outside, Backpacker, Trail Runner, Women's Running and Discover magazines, and she's the writer, host, and producer of the DNF podcast. In this episode, Tina and Zoe share actionable steps on how to take care of your mind, body, and soul to make running more sustainable, how to give back to the running community to help lift it up, and ways to support the planet in your running lifestyle to help protect the planet. My good friends Tina Muir and Zoë Rom are back on the podcast to help all of us improve our running performance for the longterm, improve our personal communities, and our planet. This week their new book Becoming a Sustainable Runner is launching and it is EXCELLENT. This approachable book contains training tips and takeaways for beginner runners and elites alike, teaching them how to approach their own practice in a more sustainable way. It also serves as a useful guide to help runners take meaningful and effective action on climate justice. Weaving together personal stories, research, and expert input, Tina and Zoë illustrate how every runner can better support their own endurance journey, and how they can extend those lessons into meaningful environmental action. Becoming a Sustainable Runner makes a compelling case not just for the “how” of environmental stewardship, but the “why,” so that every athlete can connect their love of running to the landscapes that nourish that love. For this episode, I am excited to interview Tina Muir and Zoë Rom about their new book Becoming a Sustainable Runner. The book talks about how to be a happy and healthy runner for a lifetime while also giving back to your community and your environment. In this conversation, we talk about: The importance of taking a long term view of your running journey Disconnecting your identity from your outcomes Acknowledging life's stressors and giving yourself grace Navigating the seasons of life and how your journey might evolve Measuring your progress on the things that matter Finding your community within the sport Taking the first steps in activism Creating sustainable running events and races Making good, environmentally-friendly choices for travel, shoes, and gear Through the discussion, Tina and Zoë emphasize that it's not about achieving perfection but rather taking small incremental steps along the way. The book is out on August 15th. Go get yours! To redeem offers from this episode's sponsors: Go to betterhelp.com/runningrogue for 10% off your first month of online therapy. On this episode I have the dynamic duo of Tina Muir and Zoë Rom. Tina was formerly a professional runner for Great Britain and now hosts the Running for Real Podcast. Zoë is an elite ultra runner and Editor in Chief of Trail Runner Magazine. While each has been a guest on the podcast in the past, this is my first time having a discussion with them both! Zoë and Tina bring a unique perspective to running that has been missing from the books on training and racing that currently exist. Our discussion focuses on what it means to be a sustainable runner, and the various ways you can integrate your personal running journey with the broader community and environment. Topics we explore include: Zoe and Tina's background and involvement in the running community How a shared love of composting helped lead to writing Becoming a Sustainable Runner Why doing more for “future us” vs. “present us” creates longevity in the sport How to put yourself in positions for a growth mindset The variety of ways you can find and create a running community Zoe and Tina are insightful and engaging, and can help you find even greater meaning in your running. Enjoy our conversation! Thank You Previnex! We're supported by our newest partner, Previnex. After resisting most supplements for the better part of my life, I'm cautiously changing my tune. I'm less than a year from being a Masters runner and in my personal life, I'm optimizing for longevity. I want to be my healthiest self for as long as possible and I'm excited to partner with Previnex to make that happen. Previnex uses the most bioavailable, clinically tested ingredients, the optimal form and dose of each ingredient, pharmaceutical grade manufacturing, testing of raw ingredients and finished products. For every purchase you make, they also donate vitamins to kids in need. I've been taking their Immune Support and multivitamin over the last month and I feel great. I have more energy and clarity, not to mention peace of mind that I'm giving my body what it needs. I believe Previnex works and I hope you experience the same benefits as I do. Use code jason15 for 15% off your order at Previnex! Thank you MOBO Board! Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was just at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is. Writer and sociologist Lindsey Freeman describes her book, Running, as a feminist and queer handbook of running, but it's a book for all runners. The existing running literature didn't speak to her, so she wrote the book she wanted but could never find, one that celebrates the freedom and opportunity for self-discovery that running offers, while challenging the notion that everyone is “born to run.” For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode362. As the creator and host of the podcast For the Long Run, Jonathan Levitt unpacks the “why” behind runners' ambitions. As he says, “I'm not interested in, ‘Oh, talk to me about your splits and tell me about your training.' I want to know who you are, what you care about, and how you can help other people.” He hopes that by sharing his own running journey, from his pursuit of breaking three hours in the marathon to trail running and chasing a five-minute mile, he'll encourage others to step out of their comfort zones and pursue their goals. Today's chat, hosted by TJ David and Zoë Rom dives into the challenges of covering a super long, remote and technical race like the Hard Rock 100. The challenges of running a business and the constant work it takes to learn, adapt and be open to change. We take inspiration from NF's song, "Hope" and talk about what it means to us, while also reflecting back on "Champions Mindset" in the context of TJ's big win and 15 minute PR at the Silverton Alpine Marathon last weekend. We finish up by getting into how we both got into running and what advice we wish we could give our younger selves. This episode is jam packed with tons of goodies and takeaways, so you won't want to miss any of it. Colson Smith has been in the public eye since he was a child. When he joined the cast of Coronation Street 13 years ago, he became part of a national institution. As a star of the iconic TV show and a host of the hit podcast The Sofa Cinema Club, alongside his Corrie co-stars Ben Price and Jack P. Shepherd, he's under constant scrutiny by the press and social media. When the world went into lockdown three years ago, he seized the opportunity to do something for himself away from the tabloid glare and started running. He ran his first marathon last month, and says, without hesitation, that running has changed his life. For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode358. A lot has happened since Kara Goucher was last on the podcast, three years ago. In 2022, the World Championships silver medalist and two-time Olympian was diagnosed with repetitive exercise dystonia, a rare neurological disorder. To prevent her symptoms from becoming worse, she's had to drastically reduce her running, putting an end to her competitive career. This year, however, brought much better news: her memoir, "The Longest Race: Inside the Secret World of Abuse, Doping, and Deception on Nike's Elite Running Team", debuted at number 7 on The New York Times' bestseller list. She's also launched a podcast with Des Linden, "Nobody Asked Us", where they share their takes on all things running. What do you do when you finish a run or workout, you're hot and sweaty, and you have to get into your car? Put a towel over your seat and try to anchor it under the headrest, only to have it fall down as you're driving anyway? Perch on the very edge of your seat to try to minimize contact with it? Neither of those options keeps your car clean, not to mention that they can be dangerous. Dri Seat waterproof seat covers can be installed and removed in seconds; they have a slip-resistant backing that keeps them in place; and they won't scratch, scuff, stain or discolor your seats (and neither will your sweat!). Introducing a new format to the MicroCast, hosted by coaches TJ David & Zoë Rom - In today's chat, we get into challenges we worked through outside of running in the past week, something outside of running that we're currently obsessed with and our mindsets going into our races at UTMB Valhöll in Argentina last month. We chat about identity and the "never enough mentality" as well as Zoë's new book, Becoming a Sustainable Runner, and some fun talk aways from Taylor Swift and Matthew McConaughey. Make sure you stick around for the end where we get into some "hot or not" rapid fire questions too. Have you ever wondered what it's like to be the partner of someone who's about to run across Africa? Alice Light, an ultra runner herself, knows. Her partner, Deo, is embarking on a run from Cape Town to London on July 24th. Most people will never be in the position of supporting a loved one who's taking on an epic journey across two continents and 16 countries, but you can support anyone in any endeavor, no matter how big or small. As Alice says, “We're stronger together. And the journey is much more fun if we're not alone.” You can learn more about Deo's Cape Town to London run on GoFundMe. GotSneakers? makes it socially and financially rewarding to contribute to a circular economy with their FREE sneaker recycling program. As runners, we go through a lot of shoes, but many of them that we consider “done” still have life for others. In the U.S. alone, at least 200 million pairs of shoes and sneakers wind up in landfills each year, where they can take 30-40 years to decompose. Meanwhile, more than 600 million people worldwide don't even own a pair of shoes. Martinus Evans wants everyone to embrace the joys of running at their own pace. He runs races from 5K to the marathon, but, as he says, “Our lives don't depend on what place we finish the race in. So if that isn't the case, then why take it so seriously?” He created a group where he would feel at home, the Slow AF Run Club, an online community with over 25,000 members that he describes as “the Facebook for the Back of the Pack.” The Slow AF Run Club book is coming out next week, providing information and inspiration for anyone who wants to run, at any speed. After four thwarted attempts at racing an ultramarathon, Tina Muir ran the Bryce Canyon 50 Miler on May 20th. Bryce Canyon almost didn't happen either; the race was on the same day as the funeral of her close friend, Patrick, whom she had lost just a few weeks earlier, and she struggled with whether or not to run. But Patrick's widow knew that he would have wanted her to carry on and encouraged her to run the race to honor him. Patrick must have been proud: Tina finished first female, third overall, and with the 4th-fastest women's time in the race's history. Tina is currently preparing for her first ultramarathon, the Bryce Canyon 50 Miler, so we thought this was an appropriate time to reshare an episode from June 2018 with the amazing ultrarunner Courtney Dauwalter. In this episode, she shares her experiences of hallucinating and running blind, her favorite moment on her way to victory in the Moab 240, and her advice for pushing through tough times. Coach Zoë and I had a wonderful experience at the UTMB Valhöll race in Cordoba, Argentina and this call is all about recapping that experience. From our training through a wet and snowy colorado winter, to our mindsets, process oriented goals and expectations for the race - to how we dealt with challenges and a race that ended up being more technical, hotter and longer than expected, we get into all the good stuff. There are a lot of important insights for athletes on this call, particularly with regard to choosing goals, mindset, flexibility, working through setbacks and personal growth. We landed on our first international podiums out there and this was clearly an exciting experience for us- but what really makes it so special is all the trials we've gone through to get to this point. The journey is everything! If you're a long time listener of this podcast, please do us a favor and rate and review us on your preferred listening platform. This helps us continue to build our community and get more interesting and important conversations out there. They're machine washable and sized for all vehicles, from compact cars to trucks. Go here and use code R4R20 for 20% off your first order! Matt Chittim's excitement is palpable for the new Patreon site, Relay, where he and 8 other running content creators have combined forces to put out at least 20 pieces of various running media each month. The site is entirely paywalled and their goal is simple, to be the best place on the internet for running content. They are setting out to do this by constantly releasing high-quality material through collaboration. “Ultimately, I have full faith this is going to work for a very simple reason. The people on the team.”Kara Goucher, Peter Bromka, Lindsey Hein, Zoë Rom, Mike "Kofuzi" Ko, Stefanie Flippin, Carolyn Su, Marcus Brown, and Matt make up the Relay team. The first week of content that Relay created is open for free on the website and will remain that way, so you can get a feel for what they are doing. Check it out for yourself, it's certainly ambitious and exciting and I'm curious to see how they do! What do you think about it all? Are you interested in a format like this? The ability to pay for the exact content we want to see is pretty powerful and it seems the world is embracing this. It's still relatively new though, and people are building new habits, so to see what works and what doesn't is fascinating. Trail running is in a fascinating place itself as an industry, so all of this could change rapidly and often. Joy is...Finding Your Strange. Zoë Rom is Editor in Chief at Trail Runner magazine and managing editor of Women's Running. She is currently at work on her first book, Becoming a Sustainable Runner which will debut in August 2023. She has recently helped launch Relay, a premium, collaborative newsletter for runners. You can read her work on Trail Runner, Women's Running, Outside and Relay . Zoë is an outspoken advocate for environmental justice and is certainly not afraid of hard things. In this expansive conversation we delve into what drives Zoë; what finding our voice means and how we make space for the voices of others; why we need to keep talking and fighting for inclusion in, not only the running community, but all areas of life; not apologising for high expectations; the power of failure; what authenticity means, and the complexities of our relationship with media. All this, as well as Zoë's path as an athlete and why we should all pursue joy.Zoë Rom IG: @carrot_flowers_z Listen: DNF Podcast Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
I met the sister of Trail Runner Mag Editor in Chief, Zoë Rom, at a coffee shop. It came up in convo that I do not consider myself a mountain biker, but when I'm on the trail, in my mind, I am running. An email exchange ensued and here we are, Zoë and me, discussing life and trails over a beer for a feature article. How are curiosity and empathy related or even the same? What are the ways that we can get creative about establishing a connection with others? And, what steps are needed to set goals, crush them, and find joy in all of it? This and so many nuggets of wisdom with the incredible Zoë Rom. Zoë is a Boulder based writer and journalist. She is the associate editor of trail runner magazine, host of the DNF podcast and an outspoken advocate for environmental justice. She has a master’s degree in environmental journalism from the University of Colorado and has a deep passion for our public lands. In this episode of curious minds, Dr. L dives deep with Zoë into the intersection of journalism, empathy, and curiosity. we explore the intricacies of building connections with strangers, how inquiry can serve as an investment platform into the other, and what we can learn from allowing ourselves to become vulnerable in the process. Zoë provided so many nuggets of wisdom it was hard to pick an audio clip to share on social media! Listen to this one twice…maybe even three times if you can :) www.zoerom.com www.drlarapence.com

She fell in love with the mountains through trail running, climbing and mountaineering while pursuing a master's degree in environmental journalism at The University of Colorado in Boulder. After working as a sled-dog reporter in rural Alaska collecting sound at Aspen Public Radio as a producer and reporter, Zoë moved to Carbondale to work at Trail Runner in 2019. She writes, produces and hosts the DNF Podcast. She won a Colorado Broadcaster's award for her feature reporting on the history of Colorado rodeos, and her reporting on avalanches has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered and Morning Edition. Discussed in this episode: --Upcoming environmental issue of Trail Runner Magazine --Eco-poetics --Connection between spirituality and the outdoors --Zoë's journalism on arctic exploration --"Climate Heroes and Hypocrites" --How to inspire the outdoor industry to push for systemic climate action --Environmentalism needs to be environmental justice --The role of the outdoor industry in rural communities --Zoë's Capitol Peak FKT Quotes: “I think that all environmentalism should be informed by a love of people first.” "We need to radically recreate this industry and our culture to take into account the most vulnerable communities. The outdoor industry is focused on pretending that's not our problem when it absolutely is… To me, any conversation on environmentalism that does not include justice and does not include equity and does not focus on the most vulnerable among us, is going to fall flat.” “Investing in industries that develop rural economies, rather than just extract from them, is a great way that you can engage with outdoor spaces.” Follow Zoë: Instagram Twitter Follow Social Sport: Website Instagram Facebook Twitter *This episode is sponsored by Paper Trails Greeting Co. The Well Mind welcomes Zoë Rom to episode 9 of the podcast. Zoë is an athlete, journalist, an Associate Editor for Trail Runner Magazine and is the host of DNF, a podcast focused on telling stories of failure in running and in life. In her podcast, she talks with everyday runners and some of the most successful elite trail runners in the world about their failures. She believes that the greatest stories and opportunities for growth come through failure. We explore this topic and so much more during our conversation. Zoë shares her desire to spot light narratives that aren't typically front and center, so that she can support people in telling their stories to a wider audience. We dive into topics and themes related to mental health, anxiety, body image, and the environment. We also explore how to buffer ourselves against the negativity, fear, and criticism of the world and our own mind.
