Tina Muir is a former elite marathoner who is now the Founder and CEO of Running For Real, host of an award-winning podcast of the same name, author of multiple books, and environmental activist. As an elite athlete, she ran a personal best of 2:36 in the marathon and represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2016 World Half Marathon Championships where she placed 49th. After retiring from pro running, she started Running For Real, a business designed to use running as a vehicle for social change and encourage people to be vulnerable and courageous about the things that matter. The accompanying Running For Real Podcast, which was voted best fitness podcast at the sports podcast awards in 2021, creates space to have conversations about running, social justice, and the climate emergency. Alongside her work with Running For Real, she is also implementing a sustainability plan for the 2025 World Road Running Championships in San Diego and has worked with other major road race organizers and even the United Nations on campaigns related to climate change and humanitarian affairs. In this conversation from December 2023, Olivia sits down with Tina to discuss the many ways that individual runners and running event organizations can make meaningful changes to help preserve the environment. From her work with Atlanta Track Club's very own American Journal Constitution Peachtree Road Race to how she is helping to make the 2025 World Road Running Championships more sustainable and practical tips for runners like you and me, Tina leaves us with a hopeful message: The environment will not change overnight, but if we pace ourselves with small, consistent actions—each of us doing what we can reliably sustain on most days—we can make the most of our impact and together create big change. "Everyone's so different... For me, it's just getting B+ training in and hopefully getting A+ results because I'm not burning out. I can be consistent and get brilliant training blocks in throughout the year without burnout or anything. And I think that's got me to this point. It's nothing crazy, it's nothing fancy, it's just simplicity. You think in your head for the longest time that you need to be doing ‘this, this, and this'. And actually, it's just taking a step back like, and enjoying running for what it is… Take away the goals, take away the times. Just enjoy running for the simplicity of it and the results will hopefully show.” Calli Thackery just ran the second-fastest marathon by a British woman in her marathon debut at the McKirdy Micro Marathon in New York. She crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 22 min and 11 seconds. Only Paula Radcliffe is ahead of her on the all-time list. She's also now No. 3 on the all-time European list behind Radcliffe and Sifan Hassan. With this performance, Calli puts herself in a strong position as a contender for British Athletics' Olympic marathon selection but there are still about eight months to go until things are set in stone. This has been a breakout fall for her since she won The Big Half in London in September and then took seventh at the World Road Running Championships in Latvia earlier this month. In this episode, you'll hear why she decided to bet on herself by pursuing professional running after working a full-time job, why working with her coach and fiancé Nick Hauger has worked so well and her hopes for the Olympic year ahead. She'll also share some stories about growing up in a running family since her father Carl was a professional runner for Nike and Team GB and medaled at the 1993 World Half Marathon Championships. It was great to meet and listen to the story, so far, of Angie. from a background as a runner, who reached the elite level at cross country and long distance, laid the foundation for what has been a diverse sporting journey.Angie states "I come from a running background. Between 1996 and 2000 I ran internationally as a distance runner. Representing England in the Commonwealth Games 1998 in Kuala Lumpur. The World Half Marathon Championships in 1997 and the World Cross Country Championships where we won a team bronze medal. I was sponsored by puma for 5 years at that time and ranked 8th in the Commonwealth over 10,000m with a time of 33.20.I had my family and got into triathlons at around 40. I have never really trained to optimum for duathlons as I have always relied on being a PT for fitness. However, they are getting super competitive and if I want to get in the medals I need to do some proper and structured training. I have had 2 silver medals in the middle distance duathlons at Worlds. I got double bronze medals in the sprint and standard distances 4 years ago. I also got a silver getting exactly the same time as Cathy Dawson to 100th of a second. What a race that was. I have also bagged another bronze at standard distance 2 years ago. The last couple of races 4th and 6th. I have a year between now and the Worlds in Australia so time to put the training in ready.I compete in powerlifting too. I am the World Champion in single lifts and full power and I hold the world record in my category for deadlift (full power) European records for squat in full power. This week's conversation is with Keira D'Amato, a full-time realtor, mother of two, and one of the most elite female long-distance runners in the United States. Keira's running career took off in college where she became a four-time All-American Track athlete at American University. However, just a couple years after graduating, she underwent a major ankle surgery which put a quick - and heartbreaking - end to her post-collegiate running career. Eight years later, Keira started chasing down some “unfinished business” and went on to set the American Women's Record in the Marathon (2:19:12), the World Record in the Women's Only 10 Mile Run (51:23), and was selected to Team USA for the World Half Marathon Championships in 2020 & 2022... all while juggling the responsibilities of raising two kids and a career as a full-time realtor. Keira is epic and this conversation is about so much more than her career as an athlete – it's about pain, purpose, re-discovery, and having the courage to go for that thing you've always wanted… even when it seems like it's too late. ----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. It's easy to overcomplicate running, whether it's our goals, our training, or our recovery. Pro Adriana Nelson teaches us why simplicity and dedicated focus are key to a life well run. Adriana went on to earn 6 long-distance national track titles for her home country of Romania, as well as a Romanian team gold at the 2004 World Half Marathon Championships with her teammates. She was second at the 2007 Chicago Marathon, and was the 2013 US half marathon champion. Adriana's background is unique and compelling because of her hard work and talent and what she has overcome. But that's only part of the story. Adriana's successful business venture - ROLL Recovery - was born out of her dedication to taking care of her body while competing at the highest level. She is just as devoted to the recovery process as she is to pushing her body in training. On this week's podcast we'll discuss what makes Adriana's perspective so unique, including: The impressive mindset she has carried through her entire journey How she prioritized recovery even as a newly elite runner with limited finances Why it's important to embrace where you are, even if that means running becomes one of life's competing demands How simplicity should be prioritized in recovery, including hydration, nutrition and sleep Why her emphasis on recovery is more important than ever now that she has a young child How she can still can run marathons in the 2:30s even on far less mileage Whether she was running to get bread for her classmates as a 12 year old, or building the successful life she has today, Adriana's story is an inspiring one you're bound to enjoy. Thank You InsideTracker! This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker, one of the most reputable blood testing companies in the world. They were founded in 2009 by aging, genetics, and biometrics scientists to help you analyze your body's data and get a firm idea of how well you're responding to training. But the best part is that they give you personalized optimal ranges for each of these biomarkers and a host of ways to improve these markers through diet, lifestyle, or exercise changes. I've personally gotten three Ultimate tests from them and the process is simple, easy, and very eye-opening if you haven't done a deep dive on your biomarkers yet. Of all the investments you can make in your running, this one is like getting a detailed checkup or regularly scheduled maintenance for your internal physiology. If you're ready to take control of your health and optimize your training, get 25% off any of their blood tests with code STRENGTHRUNNING at InsideTracker.
This week's guest is Matt Llano of Under Armour and Dark Sky Distance. Matt is a 2:11 marathoner who has represented the U.S. internationally at the World Half Marathon Championships and has competed on the elite level in 4 of the 6 Abbott World Marathon Majors. Matt is a New York native who ran collegiately for the University of Richmond, where he was an All-American, and now lives and trains in Flagstaff, Arizona, with his boyfriend and two dogs. Matt came on the podcast to share his acquired wisdom and experience as he trains for his 11th marathon as a professional runner, as well as his unique perspective on the changing landscape for queer athletes and everything in between. We also covered HGTV, dog miles, beginning our careers in swimming, and track vs. road racing. This episode is brought to you by the Under Armour All-Out Mile. It's not too late to sign up for free and race a fast and fun mile this month as part of the Citius Mag team. We've had a lot of fun promoting this awesome virtual race and community event all month and if you want a quick, easy way to support the podcast you can take 5 minutes to sign up and join the Citius team! On choosing the NYC marathon: “I ran it in 2016 in the midst of some injuries […] and I'm excited to go back and hopefully have some redemption. It's my home state, the state where I was born; so to go back and rewrite my story is what I'm hoping to do this time around.” On running his 11th marathon: “I'm still learning with every race. Some come easier than others, but the marathon is just such a beast that no matter how many you've run, you can never take it for granted that you've got it figure out. It will always find out a way to humble you.” Of the changing attitudes toward queer representation in athletics: “It makes me feel a little envious of people going to school now to see how much has changed – not in a bad way, but to be able to be more comfortable, more open throughout college, I'm envious of that. I'm so happy for how far we've come and so happy to have been part of that conversation in a way that advanced discussion and acceptance in the running community. Nobody knew how to have those conversations at the time, and I'm glad it's getting so much easier.”
“I genuinely believe that we should be learning our entire life. And there's a part of me that feels excited for when I'm 78 years old, and all the things I will have learned.”Difficult conversations can very often lead into areas of personal growth.Lifelong runner Tina Muir doesn’t shy away from these discussions as she builds her two successful running podcasts, Running for Real and Running Realized, and continues to challenge fixed mindsets.Timestamped Show Notes:(2:50) Growing up in a classically English town…(6:03) The difference between club sports and school sports…(8:13) “When I was coming up to my final year of college, people kept saying, ‘Are you going to go pro?’ And I was like, ‘What does that even mean?’” (11:12) A lifestyle component to pursuing sports…(14:24) “I can absolutely see why she said that I wasn't committed. They say you're a product of your environment and Andy is certainly no exception to that rule. Andy grew up in Bendigo and as a child his family holidays were centred around packing up the car and heading off to the next marathon for his parents' to compete in, because that's what all families do right? Andy will be 30 years of age when he toes the line for his first marathon on the Gold Coast in July but he certainly hasn't been sitting around procrastinating about following in his parents' footsteps into the marathon. Andy has won numerous Victorian State Titles on the track and Cross Country as well as the 2017 and 2018 National Cross Country Titles. Just 15 day's after running his 10,000mtr personal best of 28:26 at Zatopek in Melbourne in December 2019, Andy won a half marathon in Japan setting a new personal best of 62:50 and qualifying for the World Half Marathon Championships in Poland 2020 that unfortunately Australia did not attend due to COVID. Andy certainly still has a lot to offer in the shorter distances than the marathon and cross country but it's going to be exciting to watch over the coming years how the transition into the marathon distance unfolds and with 2016 Olympic marathon runner Scott Westcott as his coach I'm betting there's more green and gold singlets being posted to Bendigo in the years to come, a great chat with Andy, Enjoy! Elevating American Distance Running: Ben Rosario Ben Rosario is the head coach of the HOKA Northern Arizona Elite. His athletes have been wildly successful in recent years, with the most notable being Aliphine Tuliamuk's win at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. His athletes Stephanie Bruce and Kellyn Taylor also finished in the top ten of that race, and on the men's side, Scott Fauble, a 2:09 marathoner, came in 12th. In this episode, Coach Claire talks to Ben about the Olympic Marathon Trials, focusing on how well his female athletes did, how HOKA NAZ treats female athletes, especially in light of the Nike Oregon Project, and why he thinks so many female runners are still posting PRs well into their 30s. Ben also shares some great coaching advice, his training philosophy, and his insight into why so many world records have been posted during COVID. At the time of this recording, Ben was preparing for The Marathon Project held on December 20. Coach Claire asks Ben for his predictions and will post the results here in the show notes following the race. Like many coaches, Ben started out as an accomplished runner himself as a member of the Hansons Brooks team and he competed in the Olympic Trials twice before turning to coaching full time. In his six+ years with Northern Arizona Elite, Ben’s athletes have won U.S. National Titles in cross country and on the roads at 10k, the half marathon and the 25k, as well as New Zealand National Titles on the track and the roads. HOKA NAZ Elite athletes have recorded 8 top-10 finishes at World Marathon Majors. The team has been represented at the World Cross Country Championships, the World Half Marathon Championships, and at the World Track and Field Championships. His athletes have also competed at the European Athletics Championships, the Great Edinburgh International XC Meet, the NACAC Cross Country Championships, the NACAC Track Championships, the Pan American Cup Cross Country Meet and the Pan American Games. In 2016, the team produced two sixth-place finishes at the Olympic Trials Marathon and two fourth-place finishes in the 10,000 meters at the Olympic Track and Field Trials. At the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, four HOKA NAZ Elite athletes posted top 20 finishes, including three in the top eight in the women’s race led by Aliphine Tuliamuk–the Trials Champion. Questions Ben is asked: 4:19 2020 has been pretty crazy for everyone in the world but specifically for the team that you lead, Northern Arizona Elite. Let's go back in time to February when you were getting ready for the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. Can you take us back there and recap what you were thinking? 5:10 Atlanta is a pretty tough course with all the hills. Obviously that was not a problem for at least your female athletes. 5:28 Your athlete, Aliphine Tuliamuk, won the women's race and was planning to head to Tokyo when the world shut down. What was that like as her coach? 6:41 I would love to talk to you about Aliphine Tuliamuk’s recent announcement that she is pregnant and due in January. As her coach, I’m sure she came to you and said, “Hey, Ben, this is what I’m going to do.” What was that conversation like? 7:26 How tough was it keeping Aliphine’s pregnancy a secret? 8:33 You are quite experienced in elite mom runners. Several women on your team are moms and are still just killing it. I would love to talk about Kellyn Taylor, Stephanie Bruce. I would love to talk about Stephanie for a minute. She is almost 37 years old and still getting PRs in the 10K. How is that possible? 10:14 It didn’t used to be so long ago that mid-30s was old for a runner but now that’s not the case, and I think maybe it has something to do with belief, too, seeing all these new great examples. 11:06 I want to keep going back to the women because you have been coaching some really great ones obviously, and American women are seeing a resurgence in endurance running. American men maybe not so much. Would you want to talk about that? 12:32 I want to talk to you about how women are treated in this sport. We’ve all heard about the crazy things with the Nike Oregon Project and how Kara Goucher was treated when she was pregnant. I don’t think that it’s going to be the same story with Hoka. I would love to have you share what you could say about how Hoka supports its female athletes. 15:06 I think you’re right that when all that came out about the Oregon Project that we thought as fans, “Oh. This is the way they’re all treated.” But it’s great to hear that that’s not the case. 15:34 Whenever I get a coach on, I love to talk about coaching advice to hopefully help someone who’s listening become a better runner. Do you have different training approaches for the kids who come straight out of college than you do for your veteran elite runners? 17:03 Let’s talk in a little bit more detail about the training advice. Most runners get the advice hard days are hard; easy days are easy. But then you throw in some medium days. I think that’s where a lot of recreational runners trip up is those medium days. Can you talk about those and what they’re for and how you use them? 19:22 You don’t always have to run your hardest, right? 20:11 You're also a fan of high mileage and I want to know what that means to you because as runners we all want to run as much as possible but clearly there’s a point when high is too high. So what is that point? Obviously it’s individual, but how does somebody know what is high for them? Where’s that sweet spot? 22:51 Besides your athletes, this year we've seen so many world-record breaking performances in 2020, which seems counterintuitive since there have been so few races, the world is not normal, and people can’t train the way they usually do. What do you attribute that to? 24:14 I’m sure the cynics would say the number of world-record breaking performances in 2020 are because of the shoes or because there’s not enough drug tests in COVID. What do you say about those kinds of things? 25:25 So you think there should be regulations on running shoes like them being available to the public or there’s a stack height, that kind of stuff; is that what you mean? 27:00 What's next for you and your athletes? How do you predict the running world will change in 2020? 28:29 This will probably air after the Marathon Project this weekend, but I would love to have you handicap it a little bit, tell us who’s all racing and what do you predict? 31:40 How many participants are there for the marathon? Questions I Ask Everyone: 32:17 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give? 33:31 What is the greatest gift running has given you? 33:56 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Ben: “I think what we’re learning is that women can run really well into their mid-to-late 30s, and we’re learning that not only from Steph but Shalane, Des, Kellyn, Molly Huddle; all kinds of women in the US and beyond are showing that in distance running, women keep getting better.” “In general, my goal anyway is to keep people around here for a really long time. So we’re definitely taking a long-term approach and we’re not trying to necessarily throw everything at them right away. We’re trying to slowly add pieces over time, and you see that with the folks who have stayed with us for a long time just getting better and better and better and better, and that’s what we want.” “I think uninterrupted training leads to great performances for anybody at any level.” “The sport has a side to it now that is very technological. And so does golf. And so does swimming. And so does baseball, right? And every sport almost. And like all those other sports, we need to make sure that the playing field is fair.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? This week’s guest is a “special interest” episode for me. Harry Summers is an elite runner who grew up in NSW but now lives in Victoria. He has run sub 28 minutes for 10,000m and sub 13:40 for the 5,000m and represented Australia at the World Half Marathon Championships, World Cross Country Championships and the 2014 Commonwealth Games team. If all this was not enough Harry has won the City to Surf fun run three times (80,000 runners competing) and only just missed Steve Moneghetti’s race record by 2 seconds. Harry has been really open about his battles with alcohol and his mental health, we talk about how this has impacted his athletic career over the years and what the turning point was for several positive changes in his life. Earlier this year Harry ran from Bondi Beach to Byron Bay to spread some awareness around mental health, over this two-week period he raised several thousand dollars and ran a marathon a day in the process. I really appreciated Harry being so open and honest and sharing his story, you can see some huge growth the last few years. There are some pretty heavy themes in this podcast and if it brings up any mental health issues for you , please reach out to Lifeline on 13 11 14 or to a family member or close friend. The episode is nearly two hours long and would be perfect for that longer run! You can follow harry on instagram on @harrydessummers.

52 years ago today, Madeline Manning Mims become the first Black woman to win the Olympic 800m title. Her winning time of 2:00.9 was an American and Olympic record. To this day, she remains the only American woman to ever earn Olympic gold in the event. out of the 4 remaining teams in the satellite only one of them has room for error. mexico still has 3 runners in the field. if one goes out, they race on. belgium, sweden, and the US have only 2. if you are in one of those races you not only have to stay healthy yourself, you have to hope your opponent and teammate also takes care of themself. if one runner of a pair goes out, they take the other with them after only one additional lap. Women's results at the World Half Marathon Championships were ridiculous. Six women under 66:00 and nine under 67:00 (both all-time records). 65 of the 101 finishers ran personal bests! 46 degrees F and overcast + Jepkosgei pushing pace + latest shoe tech = tons of PBs. 10 men under 60:00 at the World Half -- just the second time in history that has happened (first was the 2019 RAK Half). In this episode, Mimi talks to elite runner, Keira D'Amato. Keira is a woman of many talents. She's a realtor in Virgina, a mother of 2, a DJ (listen to Episode 244 of I'll Have Another With Lindsey Hein for more DJ talk), and the 7th fastest 35 years or older in the WORLD for the 5K! Keira is the most decorated runner of all time in American University history where she was coached by Matthew Centrowitz Sr. At American she was a 4-time All American and 11-time individual Patriot League champion. Keira placed 5th in the 2005 NCAA DI Cross Country Championships where she beat a few up and comers by the names of Molly Huddle and Amy Hastings. Keira placed 15th in the 2020 US Olympic Marathon trials and was selected to represent the US in the World Half Marathon Championships originally scheduled to take place in Poland this spring - now rescheduled for this fall. Earlier this week, Keira ran a 15:04 5K time trial on her home track. For reference, the Olympic standard is 15:10. Keira's 15:04 makes her the 7th fastest woman 35 or older all time in the world! After a low period in her life in 2018 - today’s guest started running in order to have something to focus on, she trained for her first half Marathon - the Robin Hood Half Marathon, jut 6 weeks out - and went on to achieve a 1:24! 84 minutes In her first half Marathon!! Today’s guest is Samantha Harrison, who recently placed 2nd at the British Half Marathon Championships, @ The Official Big Half, achieving a 71 minute Half Marathon and has been selected for the World Half Marathon Championships where she will represent Great Britiain. And all, after just two years of running, and only having had a coach for 6 months!!! Sam is a full time dental nurse, working on her feet all day from 8 until 6, and is just 25 years old. Alongside her full-time job she is currently training at an elite level, normally twice daily and 7 days a week, taking a rest day once a fortnight maybe. Sam is incredibly busy, and bless her she found the time to have a conversation just 2 weeks after the Big Half, now because of the crazy schedule Sam lives by - we recorded this chat whilst she was in the bath - because when you work the number of hours Sam does, and train like she does - every second and every minute counts…. Poor Sam hadn’t even eaten when we chatted - this was a Monday evening @ 8pm, and Sam needed to eat and was up again the following morning at 5 am to train again - So I thank you Sam again for taking the time to chat with me so that everyone can hear your incredible story! I must stress again - that Sam is just two years into her running career! It is absolutely insane - how well Samantha has done already, and it is so clear that Sam faces an incredible career ahead and I wish you all the very best in the World Half Marathon Championships, and for your future career! The World University Games dominates Episode 21 with Nick Wall joining Tim to discuss the competition, the results and what it means to Australian athletics. Finishing third on the medal table with a record tally of 10 medals, the games were certainly viewed as a successful one for Team Australia. Thanks to Rob Cumbrae-Stewart from Athletics Australia, we have several great interviews lined up, including many of our medallists who provide insight into their games’ experiences. Stewart McSweyn propelled himself to second on the Australian All-Time list for 1500m with a great run to finish eighth at the Monaco Diamond League. Nicola McDermott also performed well by placing third in the High Jump in a meet that produced 10 national records, 5 world leads, 4 meet records and a World Record. The Lakeside:10 once again produced the highest quality field for an Australian 10km road race. With 14 sub 30min performances and over half the field going under 40mins, our local 10k finishing in Lakeside Stadium stamps itself as the quickest in the country, even in conditions that were less than perfect. Nick and Tim discuss the results and compare the event to other major 10k races in Australia. Feature interviews with the race winners Whitney Sharpe and Harry Summers are included. The Pacific Games are currently underway in Samoa and Nick reviews the results to date. There is also plenty happening in Europe with Kelsey-Lee Barber and Catriona Bissett having good wins on the circuit. It takes a while for the boys to wind up into a Hot Topic, but the disgrace that is Athletics Kenya gets a mention, particularly given they are still at this stage the host nation for the next World Juniors. Some strong views are expressed and a recent drug bust has particular relevance to our flagship event, the Zatopek. So plenty of news, analysis and informed commentary in another big week of athletics. Carrie welcomes Tina Muir back to the show. They discuss a wide range of topics, but most importantly, they discuss the journey that led to Tina's newborn daughter Bailey! Show notes for this episode can be found at ctollerun.com. Tina Muir Tina is a mother, wife, former elite runner, and founder of Running for Real. After running 2:36 in the marathon and representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland in her dream race of the World Half Marathon Championships, Tina stepped away from running to start a family, shocking the running world by admitting she had been struggling with amenorrhea (a cessation of menstrual periods) for 9 years. Tina’s story went viral, and tens of thousands of women have since spoken out about their struggle with amenorrhea. Tina was recently the first cover model of a fitness magazine to be featured with a stroller (and baby!) in the October issue of Women’s Running Magazine.Tina intends on returning to the professional world of running and bridging the gap between recreational runners and the elite level through her podcast, Running for Real and by being completely transparent with the setbacks in her own return to running journey.
In this episode, we cover intro topics that include Desiree Linden leaving Brooks Hansons, a big half marathon PR for Sara Hall, and predictions for the US 10K road championships in Atlanta. You can listen to the Desiree Linden podcasts referenced here: - Finding Mastery: https://findingmastery.net/des-linden/ - Rich Roll: http://www.richroll.com/podcast/des-linden-375/ Then at 21:20 into the episode, we begin our interview with Tina Muir. Tina Muir is a former elite-level runner who has her own podcast called Running for Real. She is a 2:36 marathoner and previous member of the British team at the World Half Marathon Championships, but her most recent claim to fame is her public discussion of a 9-year struggle with amenorrhea (inability to have periods). She has bravely shined a spotlight on a condition that is not talked about publicly very often. In this podcast, we discuss her ups and downs as an elite runner, dealing with amenorrhea, and her subsequent pregnancy and child birth. Tina is a great interview that holds nothing back. We believe that everyone will relate to her story, men and women. Tina Muir is a Saucony sponsored professional ELITE runner who recently represented Great Britain in the World Half Marathon Championships. Tina is the Community Manager for RunnersConnect and host of popular running podcast Run to the Top. Tina is originally from St. Albans, UK, now living in Lexington, KY with her husband (and coach) Steve. With PRs of 16:08 (5k), 33:24 (10k), 1:13 (half marathon), 2:41 (marathon), Tina may have elite speed, but she candidly shares what it means to train, live and breathe your dreams (while still maintaining balance!) on her blog tinamuir.com. "Running is a lot like life. The more you persevere through those difficult moments, the better it feels afterwards. I realized early on that if I could persevere better than most people, I would feel so much better knowing that I overcame the mental demons while I was running." - Tina Muir On this podcast, Tina shares her experiences and expertise, what it takes to build a strong body and mind, and most importantly how it feels to use running for life and wellness in an open and honest way. Running For Health, Wellness, and Life Every year hundreds of thousands of new runners lace up their new shoes and hit the pavement striding towards their wellness and health goals. For Tina, and many of us on the wellness path, running is more than just breaking a sweat, it's a way of living a wellness based life. Over the past decade and beyond, Tina has worked her way to represent Great Britain as a professional athlete, but her road to the top has not come without busting through many personal and physical thresholds. She believes that whether you're an endomorph, ectomorph, or mesomorph, the right style of running has the potential to change not only your physical health, but to sharpen the edge of your mind. As the community manager of Runners Connect, a pro, and busy wife, she literally runs and walks her talk. From surmounting panic attacks, growing personal power, and upgrading emotional health, Tina believes in following her heart; it's the message she spreads not only on the Run to The Top podcast but on her highly popular running blog called "Fuel Your Future." She reminds us with her life's work how running can be a beautiful mirror for the mental hurdles we all scale. "With running, it's actually us against sabotaging ourselves." - Tina Muir Being Imperfectly Perfect Tina shares openly and honestly in this Wellness Force Radio podcast and on her blog about running outside of the current paradigm where runners are "supposed" to look: "For me, yes I could lose those extra few pounds, but then I risk sending myself down a dark, obsessive path, and it would mean I would not get to enjoy the cake and ice cream that does make me happy, so I would rather stay as I am, but know I am enjoying my food, and staying healthy as a runner.Every single body has something to celebrate. Every single runner has their own unique strengths and weaknesses, and that should be taken into account. Do not spend your life trying to look like someone else, spend your life doing what makes you happy, and the rest will follow." - Tina Muir Resources From The Show Tina's Website "Fuel Your Future" New runner's and checking your stride length Tina's exclusive "Running For Wellness" in depth blog post written for the Wellness Force Radio Audience Run to The Top Podcast Runner's Connect - Resource for global running Tina's blog post: The Privilege of Exhaustion and Chasing Your Dreams Tina's blog post "Do You Look Like A Runner" What You'll Hear On The Show 1:30 Josh discusses today's show topics and Tina's bio 3:20 Introduction to Tina 7:13 Tina's mindset approach to running for wellness for anyone 8:41 The importance of our mental narrative in running and in our wellness 11:02 How to persevere through mental demons in running and life 12:30 Overcoming self sabotage: What goes through the mind of new runner 14:20 Why people use running to let go of old weight and how Tina's sister lost weight through running 16:45 Identifying your body type and if steady state cardio is the right fit for you 18:14 Tina's coaching of why running and strength training must be dine to prevent injuries 20:01 How to train with running for fat loss if you have more than 20 pounds to let go of 21:26 Preventing injuries when starting running no mater your body type 22:45 The reason that 9 times out of 10 new runners have knee problems 23:32 How to cultivate healthy competition with yourself and others 26:45 How to practice self love and self care for the body and mind 29:40 How to persevere through the struggle and why she "reveals too much" 34:20 The gifts of running beyond weight loss, how running can change your life 38:25 Running metaphor for life 39:10 7 for 7 round with Tina and Josh 43:24 Top myth in running: Why running isn't bad for your knees 44:04 Tina's favorite Rocky Balboa quote even though she's from the UK 47:03 The Run to The Top Podcast 49:30 Takeaways from today's show Rate & Review Wellness Force Aloha!
