If so, the verse must be teaching that if the carcass of the animal went down in value over time after the animal was killed, the one who damaged does not need to compensate for that, but pays according to the price at the time of the death. The Gemara suggests that whether the depreciation is a loss for the one damaged or the one who caused the damage is a tannaitic debate. However, this suggestion is rejected as the debate may be regarding which side is responsible for bringing the carcass to court to assess its value. According to this understanding, all agree that the one who was damaged takes a loss if the carcass depreciates. This is true for damages but if one steals, the loss is on the thief. What about a borrower whose object she is borrowing breaks? Some compare it to one who stole and others to one who damaged. Ulla quotes Rabbi Elezar on this issue - only a thief assumes the depreciation, not a borrower. Five other rulings of Ulla in the name of Rabbi Elazar are brought. One is regarding when a woman counts days of impurity when one miscarries over two days without seeing a clear fetus. The second is that one is not obligated to redeem one's firstborn son if the child was killed before thirty days passed from birth. The third is about acquiring large animals which is performed by pulling. The fourth - when brothers divide their father's inheritance, if they had previously purchased clothing from the estate's money, is that deducted from their share? One what does it depend on? The last regards a person watching another's item - if they pass it on to someone else to watch without consulting with the original owner, and the item is damaged, who is responsible?

What we discover is that the process and the journey through physical exercise is infinitely more powerful than the results that we get.     Throughout the history of fitness there have been unsung heroines that understood this complex and powerful dynamic. Today I'm talking with author Danielle Friedman. She is an award-winning multimedia journalist who specializes in telling stories at the intersection of health, sexuality, and culture. Her first book, Let's Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World is why I wanted to talk with her.   Working out is as accepted as it is expected, but it wasn't always that way. For much of the 20th century sweating was considering un-lady like and there was an urban legend that running would make you manly. Crazy right?   I spent my younger years following all the fitness trends and classes. I admit to wearing leotards and tights; they were in style I promise you! When marriage and motherhood took most of my day, my relationship with working out was on pause. They I turned 50 and found running and continue that as part of my fitness routine.  You'll love hearing the background story that Danielle shares about the impetus for the book. She is a feminist health reporter so when she wanted to get into shape for her wedding, she opened up to new options and kept her reporter's hat on!  This began her 4-year dive into the history of women's fitness and the most influential woman Lotte Burke. She has an incredible life story and Danielle shares some highlights with us. She was fearless, and a woman ahead of her time. She talked about sex and led a very flamboyant life when it just wasn't done.   I loved hearing how the workout that began as part dance (hence the bar) and yoga with feminine terms transformed to the fitness and gym terms we use today. As part of that transition, women began to question if they were the weaker sex as we'd been taught, and began to defy that idea.   Title IX turns 50 later this month and it was another piece in the path of women embracing fitness and competing and embracing their strength and physical capabilities. It's hard to remember that this wasn't always the case.   Danielle shares some of the other fitness pioneers, including her favorite Kathrine Switzer. She credits her for being one of the women who had a lasting impact in women's fitness history. She literally turned the tide around the concept of women's strength, capacity and physical ability.   Inspirational takeaways from Danielle:  Women's fitness is a privilege and there's still work to be done to increase access.  Move in ways that feel good. These are but a few of the exercise fads that author Danielle Friedman recounts in her new book “Let's Get Physical,” a history of women and personal fitness. For much of the 20th century, “sweating was considered unladylike and women tried to hide their muscles under sleeves,” writes Friedman. The rise of personal fitness, however, offered women a chance to be strong. Yet, along with its message of strength and individual empowerment, women's fitness is also caught up in the burdens posed by beauty standards. We'll talk to Friedman about these contradictions and how the industry can change to “harness exercise in ways that truly liberate all women.”

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show.  I'm Paul Vogelzang and am excited to be with you today, following another great week of talk, music, and community here on radio shows and podcasts. For many of us in The Not Old Better Show audience, exercise and fitness is a way of life.  That's definitely the case for me and my family.  I like to exercise, stay fit, creatively try new exercises, and even read about exercise. Our guest today,  journalist Danielle Friedman, has written a new book about the history of exercise and fitness, titled, ‘Let's Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World.'  (Available HERE at Apple Books) For many women today, working out is as accepted as it is expected, fueling a multibillion-dollar fitness industrial complex. But it wasn't always this way. For much of the twentieth century, sweating was considered unladylike and girls grew up believing physical exertion would cause their uterus to literally fall out. It was only in the sixties that, thanks to a few forward-thinking fitness pioneers, women began to move en masse. Who's the first female fitness figure you vividly remember? For me, it's Mia Hamm. I was 10 years old in 1999, when Mia and the U.S. women won the World Cup in an epic shootout. And yes, that was the one with the Brandi Chastain sports bra moment. By the time I was participating in sports, TItle IX had been around for nearly 20 years. The 90s felt like women were really stepping into their athletic power through sports. But long before I was born, women had been quietly - and then loudly- crusading for the physical benefits of exercise, talking about why women both needed and deserved to work out. It all starts with a dynamic young woman named Bonnie Prudden. Her report to President Eisenhower on how America's children were physically unfit led to the formation of the President's Council on Youth Fitness and yes, that dreaded test you might have taken in elementary school. But before she was shaking hands with the president, Bonnie was an expert rock climber, a mountaineer, and the owner of an old elementary school. She turned that school into the Institute for Physical Fitness, housing three gyms, two dance studios, an obstacle course, and America's first climbing wall. In many ways, we credit Bonnie as the pioneer in women's fitness. Before her, women were afraid to exercise because they were told their uterus would fall out if they did. Yes, really.I'd never heard of Bonnie Prudden, and I'm guessing Bonnie is a stranger to you, too. And I know she wasn't the only female fitness leader lost to time. That's why we're talking to Danielle Friedman, author of Let's Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World. Danielle's book was inspired by a viral essay she wrote for The Cut about the secret sexual history of barre. When she saw the response to her article, Danielle realized that there was a rich history of women in fitness. Decade by decade, Danielle covers the evolution of women in fitness, from barre to running to yoga to strength training. She highlights moments of cultural revolution, like when Jazzercise was a part of the Opening Ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics, and when Jane Fonda found her way into millions of Americans' homes throughout her insanely popular workout videos. Through it all, Danielle carefully analyzes the messaging women heard about their bodies – what the ideal figure was and how they could get it through exercise. Right now, we're at a time when women are encouraged to exercise to get strong, and to feel empowered. But not so long ago, the messaging was much more reductive, even from the women we now recognize as heroines in fitness history. Anecdotally, I know a lot of women who have struggled with disordered relationships to exercise and body image. It was eye-opening to realize the extent to which these aren't new issues.So, here's what you can look forward to in this interview. Danielle gives me a quick overview of the history of women in fitness. We also get into how women's clothes evolved to support the moving woman (the sports bra, after all, is a relatively recent invention), and Black women who were instrumental in changing fitness.
