Episode Notes"It doesn't matter what you do in this moment. It's all about everything that we put together this entire season. We don't have to have, you know, this "A" workout. You can have a bunch of "B" workouts put together. And again, the accumulation of all those workouts is going to end up with a really great result."Today's guest is Emma Bates, elite marathoner for the USA and one of the three U.S. women's marathoners competing at the upcoming World Championships. Emma said one of the coolest things we've heard anyone say on this podcast. She said we all need to learn how to “dance with discomfort.” In other words, if you want to reach your potential in anything you're pursuing, you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. You have to make “discomfort” your go-to dance partner. By embracing this notion, Emma was able to place 2nd at the 2021 Chicago Marathon back in October. On that day, she became one of the 10 fastest female marathoners in US history! Make no mistake about it, it wasn't an easy journey for her to achieve this milestone. What's really cool is she admits she had to make adjustments to her circumstances to finally experience the successes she's now having. We talk about those adjustments and the importance of enjoying the journey in this fun-filled conversation with Emma! We think you're going to love it.Timestamped Show Notes:3:01 Training in Colorado, taking breaks, and running shorter…5:38 Different approaches to road races and the track…10:35 “There's so much to be said though, for trying to connect with the audience, with the fans.”11:29 The role of emotions…15:00 Outside of running…17:46 “I just want to be giving back to the sport as much as I can.”19:06 Becoming self-aware, gaining perspective, and dancing with discomfort…23:49 Having a plan and using a mantra…25:03 Doing well in tough conditions, Chicago 2021…28:57 “Your body and your mind are working as one, and everything kind of falls away and you're on autopilot almost.”30:18 Methodical patience…34:11 The impact of environment…38:34 Training for World Championships…39:33 How do you fuel your pursuits?43:09 How Emma uses UCAN…49:20 Bryan and Jon recap…References:The Holistic Psychologist - InstagramThe Mindful Athlete by George Mumford - AmazonPeaceful Warrior by Dan Millman - AmazonEmma on the C Tolle Run podcast - C Tolle RunUFC Strength and Conditioning Coach Bo Sandoval on Fueling the Pursuit - UCANGuest:Emma Bates - Instagram | TwitterEmma's fav UCAN product: Strawberry Banana EdgeHosts:Jon Rankin - gobemore.co | @chasejonrankinBryan Green - maketheleapbook.com | @maketheleapbookLearn More:UCAN - ucan.co | @genucanYour Personal Best Awaits

2004 Olympian Carrie Tollefson,  was born and raised in the small tightly knit community of Dawson, Minnesota, where she won thirteen state championships - eight in track and five consecutive cross country titles, a national record that still stands today.   Carrie won her first national collegiate title at the 1997 NCAA Cross Country Championships, overcoming stress fractures in her metatarsal and a heel tumor that would need a bone donor and surgery. This Villanova student-athlete superstar was on crutches for two months post-surgery,  setting her sights on proving the doubters wrong, as she returned to lead the Wildcats to win the NCAA Cross Country team title the following year. After college Carrie won three USATF National Championships, including an Olympic Trials victory in the 1500 meters in 2004.  She represented Team USA at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, earning a number one USA ranking by Track and Field News in the 1500 meters. This running standout has put her broadcast journalism and communications degree to work as an analyst and commentator for ESPN2, NBC, and USATF.TV  with regular media appearances at the NYC Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Boston Marathon, and events worldwide.  In 2010 she began her online video show, C Tolle Run, now a podcast—which can be enjoyed on your favorite podcast platform. Carrie has graced covers of Track and Field News, Running Times, with five cover appearances on Runner's World. This Minnesota sports luminary was inducted into the Minnesota High School Hall of Fame in 2015 and The National High School Hall of Fame in 2018. Join me in catching up with this gracious champion, who lives and trains in her home state of Minnesota with her husband Charlie and their three children, Ruby, Everett, and Greer.  What a treat to host Carrie on this episode of Intrinsic Drive™. "I think you really need to find people that are in your corner. No matter if you're an athlete or not, just find somebody that helps you see the best in you. And like I said, holds you accountable."Today's guest is Carrie Tollefson, 2004 Olympian in the 1500 meters and multiple time champion in both cross country and track and field. Carrie gave us insight about the role her parents played in her becoming a successful elite runner. She credits her mother for her drive and her father who helped her to “train her brain” from an early age to help her become somentally tough. I've met and competed against a lot of Minnesota runners over the years and they all seem to have something special about them. I don't know what they're doing over there in Minnesota. Whatever it is, it's working! In all seriousness, Carrie seems to be a very happy go-lucky gal. And she admits that that's one of the secrets to her success. She competes best when she's free of concern and just running happy. Maybe that's one of the secrets to optimal performance in life.  Timestamped Show Notes(2:47) Life in Minnesota, growing up and now…(5:46) Seeing the world through an 11-year-old's eyes…(9:16) “We all believed we could do whatever we put our minds to because my mom told my dad that, and we heard stories about that. Anyone who's met Carrie Tollefson, seen her covering running events on national broadcasts, or listened to her podcast C Tolle Run would likely describe her as a positive person. She's known for both her Minnesota kindness and her optimistic tagline, “Get after it.”   But her athletic career was, as she puts it, “not all happy, happy, joy, joy.” Along the way, she had a number of serious setbacks, including a cancer scare when she was still in college at Villanova, years of plantar fasciitis, and a painful abdominal injury that eventually required an extensive repair procedure.   The fact that she came back from these injuries to secure a total of five NCAA championships, a spot on the Olympic team in Athens in 2004, and a long-term career covering the sport prompted us to interview her for our book Rebound—and then to follow up with her again on the podcast.    Carrie joined us today to discuss: How runners tend to view injuries, and how she'd always come back stronger (5:50) The major, unusual injury that almost ended her career before it truly began—and how it changed her entire life (8:12) How she cross-trained when she couldn't put any weight on her foot or even get into the water (14:13) The powerful mindset shift that increased her gratitude during her recovery process (17:05) The painful moment that led to her second major injury—one she had to aggressively manage during the Olympics (21:14) How she navigated injuries with her sponsors (30:18) Whether her positivity comes naturally to her or if she actively works on it (34:19) What she's learned about mindset and injury from watching and interviewing other top runners (38:51) How two injuries—one real, one invented—played a role in her husband Charlie's proposal (41:03) The biggest pieces of advice she gives athletes competing right now on mindset and injury (44:43)   Resources/links we mention: Carrie's website, Instagram and Twitter Her podcast, C Tolle Run Other athletes Allie Kieffer and Kara Goucher   You can subscribe to The Injured Athletes Club on Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts, and if you like what you hear, please leave us a rating or a review in Apple podcasts.
