“I'm excited to be back there because you never know how many chances you get to represent the U.S. on the global stage. I feel like I've been really fortunate in my career and I've gotten a lot of really cool opportunities, but still - they don't happen often. So I try to really savor the moments when something big happens, when I qualify for a team, and just really take advantage of the opportunity.” American record holder Emily Sisson, who finished second in this year's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:22:42, re-joins the show. She finished behind Fiona O'Keeffe and ahead of Dakotah Lindwurm, which is your team for the Paris Olympics. In this episode, we recap Emily's race and how she overcame some struggles of her own yet kept her composure to qualify for her second Olympics. This will be the first time that she runs the marathon at the Summer Games. She shares some insights into covering key moves during the race, strategy talk with Keira D'Amato beforehand and a little bit on the sisterhood of American women's marathoning greats. Running--State of the Sport

In this episode of "Running: State of the Sport," George and Amby chat with Keira D'Amato, the American record holder at 10 miles and the half-marathon, and the second fastest ever in the marathon with her 2:19:27. These performances make Keira a top contender in the February 3 Olympic Marathon Trials. Keira has followed an unusual path to her current running. Soon after college, she stopped serious training to get married, have two children, and start a real-estate business. She stayed away from elite running for more than a decade. However, she zoomed back in 2019 with a 2:34 marathon in Berlin, and she's only been getting faster since.   Before talking to Keira, George and Amby discussed the biggest recent news in running. George was impressed by Parker Valby's win in the NCAA Cross-Country Championships, especially by her low training mileage. He also noted noted that Harvard's Graham Blanks became the first Ivy League winner at NCAAs. Blanks called his race "dumb ass" after finishing, but there wasn't much evidence of that.  Amby mentioned that Harvard has an actual world-record runner in physics prof Jenny Hoffman. She recently set a female record for the run across America, averaging 63 miles/day for 47 days. Amby was also intrigued by Jonathan Gault's report at LetsRun.com on the increasing use of a sodium bicarbonate mix by top runners. (It's legal but often produces more "runs" than running.) It's claimed that Kelvin Kiptum, Molly Seidel, and Jakob Ingebrigtsen have been using the bicarb mix.  Where to find “Running: State of the Sport” Use your smartphone to download podcast apps from Apple, Spotify, Audible, Pandora, or Google Podcasts. "We were like, what if Emily and Keira tied? What if they cross the line together and they tied? And we said, well what if we had a cage match? Like it was a tie, and then it came down to a cage match?" Their wives are the fastest distance runners in the country. Today, we turn the spotlight to the sidelines to hear from the husbands. Shane Quinn is married to American record holder in the marathon and former American record holder in the half marathon, Emily Sisson. Tony D'Amato is married to American record holder in the half-marathon and former American record holder in the marathon, Keira D'Amato. And while their wives have been breaking — and trading — records, Shane and Tony have been bonding behind the scenes. In this wildly fun episode, Shane and Tony D. talk about what it's like being married to professional runners at the top of their game, about how they've learned to show up and show their support, about how to be a supportive partner without sacrificing their own goals and dreams, and about...cage matches. "Being injured it's so easy to think, 'This is it! This is all she wrote! That was a good run, Keira.' You can't help but let your mind go there. It was the fact that I was able to have another high and I never thought I'd get to experience anything like I experienced in Houston with that day. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime thing that I got to experience. Part of me said, 'That might be it!' The fact that I experienced something else that was a different kind of high and win was special. That week, I doubted if I would even make it to the starting line. My daughter was having a hard time with me going so there was a lot of mom guilt going on...It was a lot of doubts and insecurities. The whole time 'hope' was a word that kept coming to mind. I hoped that I could get through it. I hoped that I would have another moment. I hoped that I could hit a big goal like that again. I was positive but you just never know if it will happen. That's where all the emotion came from." Keira D'Amato is back on the show after breaking the American record in the half marathon. Just two weeks ago, she ran 1:06:39 at the Asics Half Marathon in Gold Coast, Australia. She took 13 seconds off the previous record held by Emily Sisson. This is getting fun because Sisson broke D'Amato's marathon American record last fall in Chicago. This was a big moment for D'Amato after she was forced to pull out of April's London Marathon due to inflammation in her knee. "It felt like, I'm figuring out what these things look like for me. Not, what's everyone doing or what should I be doing or what's expected of me?" There's nowhere I'd rather be on the third Monday in April than at the Boston Marathon finish line! This year, I was honored to be asked back to perform a variety of roles in Boston. I was one of the start and finish line announcers at the B.A.A. 5K and invitational miles, I hosted a live show with Keira D'Amato at Glossier's new store on Newbury Street, I was one of the race announcers at the finish on Marathon Monday, and I was the finish line reporter for the world feed broadcast. "My why is bigger than myself. My why is for all the people I'm racing for and raising funds for. My why is for all the angels on my angel list. And my why is for everyone that's been told they can't do something. Because who says you can't?" Last month, professional runner Keira D'Amato hosted a week's worth of giveaways on Instagram. The fifth and final prize: an appearance on the Ali on the Run Show! The giveaway received 550 entries, and after reading every single one of them (twice!), Keira and I selected 24-time marathoner and 20-time Ironman triathlete Kristin McQueen as the winner. Meet Kristin. She's a 43-year-old from Illinois, and she is living with trigeminal neuralgia — a chronic illness she calls "Stabby Joe." ("They say it's the worst pain known to man," says Kristin, who is in near-constant pain.) In 2003, Kristin was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and since then, she's had more than 30 surgeries, including dozens of brain surgeries. She has had to re-learn how to walk and ride a bike, she has a paralyzed vocal cord, she lost hearing on her right side, and she can only see out of her left eye. Her medical history is long and complicated — but she's never stopped fighting. In addition to her many athletic accomplishments, Kristin has also raised nearly $210,000 for the American Cancer Society. (You can donate here.) All that, plus a 15-minute catch-up with Keira (she's officially in training mode!) to kick things off. "It's been such a big goal for so long. I remember back in college, Ray (Tracey) said to me once, “You're going to set the American record in the marathon someday.' I was like, ‘Okay…' But he said it as a fact like, ‘You're going to do it.' Just because someone has the potential doesn't mean it necessarily will happen. There are so many factors and variables. But he was just like, ‘No. You will set it someday.' It feels like part of a long journey." My guest for this episode is the new American record holder in the women's marathon – Emily Sisson. She just ran 2:18:29 to take 43 seconds off the previous record of 2:19:12 set by Keira D'Amato at the Houston Marathon in January. The race was won by Ruth Chepngetich in 2:14:18 – which is the second-fastest time in history. Sisson now owns two American records She set the half marathon record in 67:11 back in May. We go inside the making of this American record, how she trusted her coach and pacers to make it happen, the appetite to go faster and what's being said in this group chat with U.S. marathoning greats Keira D'Amato, Deena Kastor and Joan Benoit Samuelson. It's just important to remember that that's all normal, no matter what that is. So I just told her, ‘This is how it feels. This is how it's gonna feel.' And that was it. Game on." First, he paced Sara Hall at the Marathon Project. Then, he paced Keira D'Amato for her American Record at the Houston Marathon. Now, dad of three and stroller-running world record holder Calum Neff returns to the Ali on the Run Show to talk about his third major pacing opportunity: running with Keira again, this time at the Berlin Marathon. In this conversation — recorded while Calum was recovering in Italy — Calum talks all about the Berlin experience, where Keira was hoping to take down her own American record. He talks about their ambitious goal for race day, explains the low-mileage training that helped get him to the start line (training for an American record on just 30 miles per week?!), and talks about how he got the job this time around. Calum talks about the plan for Keira and the three pacers, raves about the pre-race highlights (hanging with Eliud Kipchoge!), explains the unique pressure of being a pacer, and shares the final words he said to Keira on the start line. Plus, how he pushed through his own tough parts of the race, the energy he got from Keira throughout the race, and what's next on his race calendar. "I feel that every time I step on the line — like I have nothing to lose. And I get that question a lot: 'Do you feel a lot of pressure now that you're the American record holder?' No. I feel no pressure. No one thought I was going to get the American record, and no one thinks I'm probably going to go any further. I just feel a lot of support. So yeah, I kind of just felt like I'm playing with house money." Keira D'Amato is the fastest — and funniest — marathoner in the country. And three weeks ago, the American record holder in the marathon got a phone call that changed everything. She had just run — and won — the B.A.A. 10K, and was planning her fall marathon schedule. But plans changed, quickly, and she learned that a spot had opened up on Team USA for the upcoming World Athletics Championships marathon in Eugene, OR. The spot was hers if she wanted it, which she knew immediately that she did. In this conversation — recorded just a few days post-race in Eugene — Keira talks about getting that call two weeks before race day. She talks about her prep, about how she felt on race day, and about what the race itself was like. This week's conversation is with Keira D'Amato, a full-time realtor, mother of two, and one of the most elite female long-distance runners in the United States. Keira's running career took off in college where she became a four-time All-American Track athlete at American University. However, just a couple years after graduating, she underwent a major ankle surgery which put a quick - and heartbreaking - end to her post-collegiate running career. Eight years later, Keira started chasing down some “unfinished business” and went on to set the American Women's Record in the Marathon (2:19:12), the World Record in the Women's Only 10 Mile Run (51:23), and was selected to Team USA for the World Half Marathon Championships in 2020 & 2022... all while juggling the responsibilities of raising two kids and a career as a full-time realtor. Keira is epic and this conversation is about so much more than her career as an athlete – it's about pain, purpose, re-discovery, and having the courage to go for that thing you've always wanted… even when it seems like it's too late. ----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. This week's guest is two-time American record holder Keira D'Amato, fresh off a runner-up finish at the U.S. 25k championships in Grand Rapids, MI. Keira has personal bests of 1:07:55 for a half marathon and 2:19:12 for the marathon, breaking the 16-year-old American record in the marathon in January. For those of you who don't know, Keira has an incredible personal story, as a mom and realtor who walked away from the sport for nearly a decade before coming back to the sport in her mid-30s and running faster than ever before, going from racing local road races for fun to becoming one of Nike's top pros. We covered a lot of really interesting ground, including the hesitation to turn pro, the value of authenticity, and how much life has changed in the last few years. We also cleared up some funny rumors from the 25K champs and Keira explained why she's not racing the 10,000m national championships at Pre. Of course, we also got into binge-watching, beer miles, and hot takes on donuts. This episode is brought to you by Hayward Magic and the CITIUS Mag Summer of Hayward. As we get closer and closer to the national and world championships in Eugene, there will be so many fun storylines to follow and athletes to root for, and the CITIUS Mag team will be there every step of the way. Learn more at citiusmag.com/summerofhayward. On choosing to race roads over the 10,000m championships: “I try to keep an open mind to the track, and it takes me one 10k race a year to be like, ‘nope.' The roads are way more fun, and with running, it's always about having fun for me. As soon as I'm not having fun, I'm out.” On why Keira has so many new fans: “I think what resonates with people is that I quit. For 8-10 years, I was just a spectator. And then I thought ‘what if?' What would happen, what could've happened, what could still happen? A lot of us have those ‘what ifs,' and it means something to people seeing me go for it where that took me.” On running for fun: “I'm having fun with it, and I think people see that. Some people can do really well taking it really seriously, and other people like me are kind of anxious already, so when I lean into the fun aspect and do things that excite me, I can get the best out of myself.” On reaching her athletic peak in her 30s: “I've never believed the whole getting old stuff. Forty years ago, women weren't allowed to do a full marathon, you know? We've made a lot of progress and we're still making progress.”

"We hit that first split bang on the money, and I told her, 'We're good. It's happening. It's on.'" It was a record-breaking, history-making weekend at the Houston Marathon! Keira D'Amato won the race and ran a new American record in the marathon, finishing in 2:19:12 and breaking Deena Kastor's former record by 24 seconds. And Keira had some company along the way: two pacers, one of whom was Texas-based ultra-runner and four-time Guinness World Record Holder Calum Neff. (You may also remember Calum as the "green shorts guy" who paced Sara Hall at the Marathon Project in 2020.) And while Calum is an incredibly accomplished runner, he — like Keira — had never broken 2:20 in the marathon. So this task would require running a personal best of his own en route to that American record goal. (Spoiler: He did it, finishing in 2:19:33.) On this episode, Calum talks about how he got the role as Keira's pacer, what it was like previewing the course together the day before the race, and what that 5:18 pace actually felt like. Plus, all the details and dad jokes from the day, hashing out the realities of pandemic marriage and parenting (Calum and his wife have three daughters), and what's next for Calum. SPONSOR: Shokz — Visit shokz.com/ontherun for 15% off wireless headphones. What you'll get on this episode: How Calum's feeling post-race (4:00) How Calum got the job as Keira D'Amato's Houston Marathon pacer (5:55) What Calum's training was like leading up to Houston (16:20) All about Calum's experience at the 2021 Chicago Marathon (21:00) How Calum balances pacing duties with his own running goals, and what it was like previewing the course with Keira (27:15) The plan for race day (36:00) All about the race (46:15) That finish line moment (1:04:05) Calum's top moment from the day (1:13:00) What's next for Calum? "I didn't feel like I had it. I had no idea. With a mile to go, I looked at my watch and I think I saw 2:12. It's hard to do math when you're so tired. So I was like, 'What does that mean? I think I can do this but I need to keep going.' It's funny because when I get in really good shape, my husband calls me The Buzzsaw. Don't stand in my way because Keira is just coming through. In the last mile, I don't know what it was but I was clinging to that. I was physically saying aloud to myself, "Buzzsaw. Buzzsaw. Buzzsaw." as 'Keep going! Keep hanging on!'...I kept looking for the banner. I knew I was going to be able to see it. I was a little like, 'Please just make this soon because I don't know how much further I can go.' When I made the turn and seeing the banner, that's when I was like. 'This is going to happen for me today.'" Keira D'Amato is a friend of the podcast and just this past weekend set the American record for the marathon with her win at the Houston Marathon in 2:19:12. She took 24 seconds off Deena Kastor's previous mark which had stood since 2006. At 37 years old, she's one of the most inspiring stories in the sport. If you haven't heard her episode with me from November 2020, she talks in detail about her decade of hobby jogging after running at American University. She got married. Got into Real Estate. Had two kids. Started competing well on the national level at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials and her Cinderella story continues to this day. She went on the Today Show on Tuesday morning and then joined me for this longer conversation where we basically are processing her run in real-time. "Coming out of college, I tried running for a little bit and got injured. Then I gave up on myself. I let go of that dream and I forgave myself for not hitting those dreams. Then, I gave myself permission to try again and to dream of that again. To be able to come here – I'm just getting so emotional – what a ride. I'm just so happy and proud of myself that I allowed myself to give it another shot to see what I can do. To finally win this 25-year-old-plus goal of mine is just really emotional for me to think about.” This week's guest is Keira D'Amato, who says running professionally is her "side hustle." One of America's fastest realtors, D'Amato just won her first national title at the U.S. Half Marathon Championships in 1:07:55. “I feel like nothing and everything changed.” Keira D'Amato is many things: a full-time realtor, a mom of two, a Nike-sponsored professional runner, and — her newest title — a world record holder. Last year, Keira had arguably the best running year of her life. She ran a personal best at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (2:34), ran a 5K on the track in 15:04 (beating her lifetime best by a full minute), won the Michigan Pro Half Marathon (and ran a 64-second personal best), ran a 2:22 at the Marathon Project (a 12-minute PR), and broke the 10-mile women's only American record at a race she created called the Up Dawg 10-Miler. Turns out, that race wasn't just an American record — it was also good enough for a just-ratified world record! At the peak of it all, Keira signed with a sponsor (Nike) for the first time at age 36. Unfortunately, since then, Keira has dealt with injury stuff and health stuff, and had to scratch from the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, where she'd hoped to run the 10K. Still, her perspective is as inspiring ever, and she's one of the funnest, funniest women in running. Always a good time with Keira on the Ali on the Run Show! Keira placed 15th in the 2020 US Olympic Marathon trials and was selected to represent the US in the World Half Marathon Championships originally scheduled to take place in Poland this spring - now rescheduled for this fall.  Earlier this week, Keira ran a 15:04 5K time trial on her home track.  For reference, the Olympic standard is 15:10.  Keira's 15:04 makes her the 7th fastest woman 35 or older all time in the world!   Another fun fact about Keira: she's a superfan of the television show, Survivor.  In this episode, Mimi and Keira catch up on all things running, but then get deep into Survivor talk.  We talk about: - How we started watching the show and why we keep watching - Our favorite seasons - Our favorite players - Our experiences meeting various Survivor players IRL - Past contestants we'd like to see play again - The importance and magic of Rob Has a Podcast  - The controversial fire making challenge conundrum at the Final 4 Tribal Council - Our pro-runner fantasy Survivor season - Alliance names - The Final 3 and Winner of Survivor: Rumble of the Runners
