Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Gwinnett Police Helicopter Helps Locate Missing Child Gwinnett County Police found a critically missing 15-year-old girl on Wednesday using a police helicopter. The girl's mother reported her missing around 11:40 a.m. after an argument, discovering she had left their Lawrenceville home without shoes. Due to a medical condition requiring supervision, the Gwinnett Police Aviation Unit was called in. The helicopter quickly located the girl, and officers on the ground, guided by Corporal Hanna, found her upset but safe on a sidewalk. Hanna calmed the girl and safely returned her home. The case showcased the police department's coordinated efforts and crisis training. STORY 2: ERROR: Computer Glitch Sends Tax Appeal Hearings Email to Many Gwinnettians On Memorial Day, many Gwinnett County homeowners received erroneous emails about participating in Board of Equalization appeal hearings due to a computer glitch. The emails, sent between 10:42 and 11:43 a.m., were caused by a coding error and affected "several thousand" homeowners. The emails, which included WebEx links for hearings, caused confusion and concerns about potential scams. Arefeen Chowdhury, a candidate for Gwinnett tax commissioner, demanded answers. The county sent a follow-up email explaining the mistake and has taken steps to correct the issue and prevent future occurrences. STORY 3: Marine From Buford Carries Honor And Remember Flag at Virginia Run For The Fallen Memorial Run On May 4, U.S. Marines with the Security Battalion participated in the 12th Annual Virginia Run for the Fallen at Marine Corps Base Quantico, running with the American and Honor and Remember flags. The event, involving Gold Star families and veterans, is part of a four-day, 250-mile tribute to honor Virginia service members who died during the War on Terror. Lance Cpl. Jacob Shelton and Cpl. Jose Crosby carried the flags for this segment, joined by Cpl. Marina Camponescki and Cpl. Jorge Ruiz. Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: Biden administration, Georgia officials applaud debut of Plant Vogtle expansion On May 29, Georgia Power announced that the Unit 3 nuclear reactor at Plant Vogtle is fully operational. U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi will celebrate this milestone, highlighting Plant Vogtle as the largest U.S. nuclear power plant and a major source of carbon-free electricity. The expansion, completed after 15 years and $36.8 billion, is expected to power one million homes and create high-quality jobs. However, a report by Georgia consumer groups criticizes the project for severe cost overruns and delays, estimating significant future rate hikes for Georgia Power customers. STORY 5: New study suggests statins may help prevent cancer A new study suggests that statins, commonly used to lower cholesterol, may also prevent cancer by blocking a key inflammatory protein. Published in Nature Communications, the research shows that statins can obstruct the TLR3/4 and TBK1-IRF3 pathways, which are involved in cancer development from chronic inflammation. Led by Professor Shawn Demehri of Massachusetts General Hospital, the study found that the statin pitavastatin effectively suppresses the IL-33 protein, reducing inflammation and preventing cancer in mice. Analysis of health records from over 200 million people indicated that pitavastatin use is linked to a significantly lower risk of chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The findings suggest that statins may offer a safe and effective means to combat inflammation-related cancers. We'll be back in a moment. The two-hour show, directed by Melissa Arasi, explores themes from the Civil War to gay rights and Black Lives Matter, aiming to unite and inspire without judgment. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the chorus partners with Women Engaged, a nonprofit promoting women's rights and civic engagement. Two Atlanta Women's Specialists' doctors failed to regulate Shannon's blood pressure, despite knowledge that pre-eclampsia patients pose a high risk of blood pressure-induced seizures, and failed to manage her fluid levels. As a result, Shannon suffered cardiopulmonary arrest, resulting in permanent brain damage and physical disabilities due to an extended period of time without oxygen. A Fulton County, Georgia jury delivered a $45.8 million verdict, including $9.8 million in economic loss and $18 million in compensatory damages for Shannon. Guest Bio: William 'Bill' Sims Stone Bill is a trial lawyer from Blakely, Georgia, who specializes in personal injury, wrongful death, professional malpractice, product liability, commercial and consumer fraud cases. The firm's predecessor was founded in 1915 by Bill's grandfather, the late Wm. Lowrey Stone. Past members of the firm include Bill's father, Lowrey S. Stone, who formerly served as Chief Judge of Superior Courts, Pataula Judicial Circuit. Bill was born in Dothan, Alabama, on August 19, 1953. He is also member of the bars of the United States District Courts for the Middle and Northern Districts of Georgia, the Middle District of Alabama, and the Central District of Illinois, as well as the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits. The publishers of the Martindale Hubble Law Directory have awarded Bill its highest rating (AV) for legal ability and integrity. Bill is a Life Member and past president of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association and is also a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia, the Alabama State Bar, the American Association for Justice, and the Southwest Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. Bill has served on the Georgia Judicial Nominating Commission that recommends candidates to the Governor for appointment to vacant judgeships in Georgia. April is National Minority Health Month, and this episode we're sitting down with Dr. Melody McCloud to discuss the health threats faced by minority women—Black women in particular—as well as the vital role of equity in public health. Dr. McCloud is an obstetrician-gynecologist who became the first black woman to establish an OB-GYN practice in DeKalb County, Georgia. Dr. McCloud is also the founder and medical director of Atlanta Women's Healthcare PC and lectures nationwide on women's health, sex and social issues. Pay back that good grace you got from everybody else.” - Jill Campbell Jill Campbell Guest Bio: Jill Campbell is the President and Chief People and Operations Officer for Cox Enterprises, a private, family-owned company based in Atlanta, Georgia, with nearly $20 billion in annual revenues and nearly 50,000 employees. In her role, she leads the people solutions,real estate, aviation, facilities, security and corporate affairs departments. Previously, Campbell served as Chief Operations Officer of Cox Communications. In this role, she oversaw the company's day-to-day operations, ensuring company-wide alignment with competitive strategies to enhance marketplace execution and grow the company's nearly 7 million residential and business customers. Campbell joined Cox in 1982 as Director of Communications in Oklahoma City, where she also served as Customer Service Manager and acting General Manager. She later served in several roles for Cox operations, including Vice President and General Manager for Cox's Bakersfield, California, and Santa Barbara, California, operations; vice president of customer operations for Cox in Phoenix; and vice president and general manager for Cox's Las Vegas operation. In 2001, she was promoted to Senior Vice President of Operations for the Eastern Division, and in 2011, she expanded her role to oversee operations for the company's entire field operations. A graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Campbell also earned an MBA from Oklahoma City University. She is currently on the board of directors for the Atlanta History Center and Georgia Power and is a member of the International Women's Forum. Jill is a member of the International Coaching Federation and is also a Certified Master Coach. She previously served as a board member for several nonprofit organizations, including United Way, Boys & Girls Club of America, YMCA, Woodruff Arts Center, Girl Talk and the WICT Foundation. She also served on the boards of the California, Arizona and Nevada cable television associations. In April 2017, Campbell was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame. In 2004, Campbell received the Atlanta Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) Woman of the Year Award, and in 2008, she was honored by WICT as its national Woman of the Year. She was ranked number two in Cablefax's 2015 Most Powerful Women in Cable. In 2020, Campbell was honored with the Alumni of the Year Award from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. International Women's Day was officially celebrated on March 8, but we can still feel the girl power in the air! Joining us on today's Around Atlanta episode is Kari Love, CEO of The Atlanta Women's Foundation. The Atlanta Women's Foundation (AWF) is the only public foundation in Georgia dedicated solely to women and girls and Love discusses the many ways the organization acts as a catalyst for change. Love is a native Atlantan and joined the Atlanta Women's Foundation six years ago, continuing her 23-year career as a leader in the Atlanta nonprofit and broadcast communities. She began her career at WYAY & WYAI-FM and later moved to WFOX-FM as promotions and marketing director. She joined the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Georgia and Alabama in 2003, and she was serving as its vice president of corporate development and events before joining the Atlanta Women's Foundation. The Atlanta Women's Foundation's primary role in the community is a grant-maker, providing funds, resources, and evaluation support to nonprofits that provide programs to low-income women and girls to help break the cycle of poverty. “We look at the many barriers that women are facing in our community and we raise money from the community to reinvest into the community with programs that are focused on supporting women and girls,” explains Love. “Some of these barriers include mental health issues, workforce development, financially illiterate, education and child care.” AWF also provides leadership development through their Women on Board training workshops and Inspire Atlanta. This year will be 19 years that the Women on Board training programs have been in session. These workshops train women to serve on nonprofit boards, understand their roles, the documents and forms, and to gain overall confidence in their abilities. Inspire Atlanta launched on March 8, 2018 – International Women's Day – and focuses on three main areas: personal development, leadership development, and philanthropic development. It is a comprehensive initiative that provides a unique leadership opportunity to a diverse group of professional women who are looking to ignite their passion for creating positive change for women in Atlanta. “We want to help all women in Atlanta that may have any barrier in their path to success,” states Love. “If you want to improve your communities, you improve conditions for women,” says Theia Smith, founding executive director of the City of Atlanta Women's Entrepreneurship Initiative, which provides office space, mentorship, educational resources and access to capital to start-up companies owned by women. The initiative, begun in May 2016, graduated its first class of entrepreneurs in 2017 and now hosts a new cohort of 15 women. Over fifteen months, they will work together in the Flatiron Building in downtown Atlanta, growing their businesses while they learn from one another and outside experts. “Isolation is the enemy of entrepreneurs,” notes Smith, who herself is a recent graduate of Leadership Atlanta, a nine-month executive-level training and development program. In this episode of Access & Opportunity, Carla Harris talks with Smith about the model that the Atlanta Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative has established for empowering women-owned businesses and how that model could be replicated in other cities. As I followed the masses of people on Saturday morning toward the Center for Civil Rights, where the march was to kick off, the streets of Downtown Atlanta bigger than I'd ever seen them. Hundreds of people flooded toward the museum, filling any open space accessible. Standing there waiting, surrounded by people, I realized all of this seemed very familiar to me: This was how it felt last January at the Atlanta Women's March taking the same route through downtown to the capitol.
