As a woman in my fifties, I've felt firsthand the frustrations of stubborn weight gain, shifting hormones, exhaustion, and just not feeling like myself. So many of us are juggling careers, caring for family, and trying to be everything for everyone…right when our bodies are changing in ways no one ever prepared us for. That's why I invited Dr. Bindiya Gandhi to join me for a real conversation about what's happening in our bodies during midlife and menopause, and, most importantly, what we can actually do to support ourselves - physically, mentally, and emotionally. We cover everything from what practices are essential for women in this phase, to how stress, sleep, and shifting hormones play a role. And she shares the lowdown on medications like Ozempic and how to know if Hormone Replacement Therapy is right for you.."I don't think anybody should be scared or fear menopause. Taking place Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event follows last year's success of collecting over 203,000 cans. With one in eight Georgians facing hunger, this initiative supports ongoing efforts during Christmas and beyond. Donations of canned proteins, vegetables, soups, and low-sugar or low-salt items are encouraged, while glass jars and baby food are not accepted. Drop-off locations include sites in Lawrenceville, Marietta, Decatur, Fayetteville, and Southwest Atlanta, or donors can contribute online at www.salvationarmyatlanta.org. STORY 2: Doug Ingram wins Mulberry District 5 runoff Doug Ingram won the Mulberry City Council District 5 runoff election, defeating Michele Y. Sims by 67 votes. He secured 309 votes, or 56%, compared to Sims' 242. The results remain unofficial until certified by Gwinnett County's elections board. As the council works to establish the city's government with weekly meetings, Ingram is expected to join his first meeting on Dec. 10. STORY 3: Seeking a new way of life under the sea - and a world record Rudiger Koch, a 59-year-old aerospace engineer, is living 11 meters underwater off the coast of Panama in a 320-square-foot capsule as part of a four-month-long experiment to set a world record and promote ocean habitation. His home features essentials like a bed, toilet, TV, and internet, though it lacks a shower. Beyond breaking Joseph Dituri's 100-day underwater record, Koch aims to prove the viability of living and expanding human life under the sea. The capsule doubles as an artificial reef, benefiting marine life. Despite challenges like storms, Koch is supported by a team above water and is linked to the "seasteading" movement, advocating for ocean-based communities. Once resurfaced, his first plan is a much-anticipated shower. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. On the 9th of July 2013, a 24-year-old Ryan was driving his car through the Mohave desert through what we know as Death Valley. He was on his way back to Los Angeles after spending the day in Las Vegas, when his car ran out of gas on Hwy 15. After walking several miles towards the closest town in the intense heat, Ryan encountered what should have been an incredible stroke of luck, when a highway patrolman saw Ryan and offered to help him. The highway patrolman eventually dropped Ryan off at a rest stop in Baker, CA, where Ryan called a friend in LA to come and pick him up. When his friend arrived at the rest stop 3 hours later, Ryan was nowhere to be found. Over two months passed with no word from Ryan. Then, on September 21, 2023 local hikers found Ryan's decomposing body in the desert within the previously searched area. A thorough autopsy cited the cause of death as undetermined and, more disturbingly, it was revealed that even though Ryan's body was relatively intact, he was missing at least 6 of his internal organs leading some to believe Ryan may have been another victim of organ harvesting. The reason I became a journalist is the same reason I started this podcast: to tell stories that matter. To help make the world a better place.I would argue that's what investigative reporter Brendan Keefe does every time he takes on a topic, always with one goal in mind: to uncover the truth.Brendan is the Chief Investigator for WXIA, 11Alive in Atlanta, and co-founder of The Reveal, a weekly investigative show on Atlanta's TEGNA-owned NBC affiliate. He's one of the most decorated investigative journalists in the country. At last count, he has a Peabody Award, a DuPont Columbia Award, six Edward R. Murrow Awards, a national Emmy Award and more than 100 regional Emmys to his name.Changing Laws & Saving LivesThe hardware is nice, but for Brendan, it's about the freedom that hardware buys him — the freedom to choose and follow his stories wherever they might lead.As a result, his stories have changed laws and saved lives. He shares several of the backstories here, including the role of 911 in the Parkland school shooting, and why he looked where other reporters didn't.I was eager to sit down with my former colleague from KPRC-TV to talk about the industry we both love, and to which we have dedicated our lives. An industry that is vital to a fully functioning democracy. An industry that is rapidly changing. An industry under attack. The Future of JournalismWhy are so many young journalists leaving the business? Is media consolidation on the horizon and what would that mean for our democracy? What are journalists getting right, and where can we do better? How do we educate and engage the public about the making of good journalism so they can make informed media choices? And as a husband and father of two, how does Brendan see the future for his children and yours? It's an important conversation that I hope will shed light on how meaningful journalism is crafted and delivered. And why it matters.www.ourvoicesmatterpodcast.comwww.lorellemedia.comThis podcast is devoted to empowering us all to better understand each other's differences...one story at a time. Emmy Award-winning journalist, Linda Lorelle, guides guests through insightful, unexpected conversations that reveal our common humanity. This show is not about politics per se; it is about finding a way to reclaim civility in the context of the contentious times in which we live, by sharing our personal and professional stories, in hopes that others might find a glimpse of themselves.Support the show (http://patreon.com/OurVoicesMatterPodcast)

It was all going so well for the United States and Covid-19. Before the summer, vaccinations were rising and cases falling. It looked normal. And then the Delta variant hit, cases rose, hospital wards began to fill again, and with all that, the death toll increased. With vaccinations hitting a wall, with some governors refusing to impose new restrictions and fake news rife, President Biden introduced a vaccine mandate. Our Washington correspondent, Siobhan Kennedy, looks at the summer of Delta in the US, the new policy from the Biden White House - and how this will play with a country where the party lines are even more rigid when it comes to the approach to Covid. For more information on the Covid vaccine, read Factcheck. Sources: CNN, NBC News, MSNBC, 11ALIVE, WPTZ.

As we wrap up the conversation regarding assessing organizational rules, we review another high performer, Simone Biles. Biles is a 4x Olympic gold medalist and has won 19 world championships who continues to push herself to excel further. That drive has resulted in her trying and landed maneuvers that no one has done before. The questions began when she was scored lower than expected. While judges represented by the International Gymnastics Federation (IGF) state its due to multiple factors to include safety issues, there are questions regarding the scoring Biles received. Should high performers be judged harsher than others? If a high performer is striving to do more and is doing what's expected to be rated higher than others, should they not be? Are we seeing high performing bias that results in unfair treatment of certain groups of individuals? Vaccination against Covid-19 has begun across the world. But can we end this pandemic when the World Health Organisation says that vaccine hesitancy - those who believe vaccinations are either unsafe or ineffective - is one of the biggest threats to global health? Our reporter, Ayshah Tull, has been speaking to those who are convinced the vaccine is too risky - as well as those trying to fight this disinformation so that normality can return sooner rather than later. One, two, three, four, five, six… or something. With all the counting going on these days, Donna is having nightmares of her time as UGA Zeta’s rush chair. She’s also consistently asking herself W.W.D.P.D. For those who don't already know, that’s “What would Dolly Parton do?” The Country Music Awards have not escaped the effects of COVID-19. Artists have dropped out and performances have been moved around. The next episode of the podcast will feature a recap of the awards, as well as a quick conversation with Joanna Cotton. Ms. Cotton will tune into the show after her performances at the CMAs and the Uncorked Concert Series. Morgan Wallen is having some remorse about his University of Alabama / Saturday Night Live incident. Caddy and Donna discuss his actions, reactions and why he’ll end up just fine. Did someone say "Pay-For-Play?” Not us and definitely not Cadillac Jack. It’s not included or mentioned in the second segment of the show. Nor is a certain past producer in terrestrial radio who had a habit for hot mics. It’s hard to expect on-air talent, including broadcast journalists, to not let something slip when hot mics are involved. So says MSNBC’s Ken Dilanian. And My Second Act’s Cadillac Jack. Then it’s time for a round of Can’t Beat Jack. Aaron Gresham calls in to take on Cadillac Jack and see if he can beat him at his own game. (Here’s a hint: you’ll want to listen.) It’s a turbulent week. SEC Football is cancelled. Mike Tyson uses a prosthetic penis and calls it his Whizinator. Caddy remembers a time or two when he has purchased some urine. Donna laments. Caddy explains. Before closing the show, Donna wonders- doesn’t 11Alive’s Chris Holcomb also have a Whizinator? Text Caddy and let him know. 7704646024.

Over five million cases. More than 160,000 deaths and counting. The US currently leads the global tally for the highest number of COVID-19 cases. Meanwhile some countries, originally devastated by the coronavirus, are reopening successfully after driving new infections down to manageable levels. Some say the only way to prevent tens of thousands of more deaths in the U.S. is a second wave of shutdowns targeting the hardest hit areas. Critics argue that with shutdowns the supposed “cure” is worse than the disease. Millions will be denied essential medical treatment, including mental health. Jobs and businesses will be permanently lost. And, closed schools will prevent a much-needed return to normalcy for children and parents alike. In this episode of the Munk Debates podcast leading epidemiologists, John Ioannidis and Andrew Noymer, debate the essence of these two competing arguments. Cristina Pappadake-Gomez lost her sweet and loving father, Gregg Pappadake, to Covid-19. Her story is full of depth and emotion. Please make the time to listen and honor her grief and her beloved Dad's life. They both truly deserve the acknowledgment. Grieving amidst a pandemic has already taken so much from them. Cristina found my Grieve Me Alone Instagram account, and on the day I had drafted and posted about these future mask designs I had in store for the following month's shop update, Cristina commented on that post, shared that she lost her dad to Covid-19, and I was so moved by her story that I stopped what I was doing, completely rearranged my day, and devoted hours to working on getting the masks out before I got up from my computer. Thus, the masks dropped way ahead of schedule, and once they were available on the shop, I tagged Cristina and she purchased a "My Dad Died. That's Why I'm Like This." mask. Cristina appeared on several news segments: NBC NYC, NBC News LA interview with Lester Holt, & 11Alive, sharing about her darling dad and why she wears a mask. Cristina is an advocate and public speaker. In April 2016, the wife of a police officer in Griffin, Georgia was shot twice inside a locked closet. She survived, but with no recollection of the incident. As a result, that night’s events remain a mystery to this day. Brendan Keefe, the Chief Investigator for 11Alive in Atlanta, takes listeners inside this perplexing cold case of The Officer’s Wife. Brendan’s Journey Covering the Officer’s Wife Case Brendan serves as the Chief Investigator on a team of eight investigative journalists at 11Alive. He also co-anchors The Reveal, a weekly program featuring long-form reporting from the 11Alive Investigative Team. He has received Peabody, duPont, and National Murrow awards for his investigative work. Brendan heard about The Officer’s Wife case in 2016 when he was working on a corruption case in Griffin, Georgia. Soon after, Brendan’s team obtained the case records through a public records request. They decided to feature the case on The Reveal in November 2016. Later, in January 2020, the team produced The Officer’s Wife podcast, a deep dive into the details of the case. A Cold Case Without a Death The Officer’s Wife podcast takes listeners on a journey of discovery, with each revelation more shocking than the one before. The story involves the unhappy marriage of a Georgia police officer (Matthew), his wife (Jessica Boynton), and their two children. After Jessica learned about Matthew’s extramarital affairs, she prepared to divorce and leave Matthew. One night in April 2016, Matthew called 911 to report gunfire in his house. Police who arrived on the scene found Jessica inside a locked closet with Matthew’s service gun beneath her collapsed body. A Botched Investigation This case brings up a number of puzzling questions. For example, how could have Jessica fired two shots in an attempted suicide? Was she really suicidal if only Matthew--and no one else--claimed that she was? Moreover, Matthew’s actions and words surrounding the shooting are suspect. For instance, he had also stolen Jessica’s overnight (or “getaway”) bag just before the night of the shooting. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s (GBI) work on this case also raises eyebrows. Matthew and Jessica’s neighbors had apparently heard guns hours before Matthew called 911, but the GBI waited several months to interview these neighbors. Brendan believes that GBI’s investigation tried to reach the conclusion that Jessica tried to commit suicide, rather than seeking to solve the mystery. To this day, Brendan and his team do not know what happened in Matthew and Jessica’s apartment that night in April 2016. Brendan believes the GBI did very little to help bring out the truth. This case remains cold--even though the main players are alive. Where Are They Now? Today, Matthew has given up his career as a police officer. It is unclear what he is doing today. Jessica is now engaged and recently gave birth to a third child with her fiancé. Matthew and Jessica share custody of their two children. Brendan believes that Jessica is happy now. Even though she still cannot remember what happened that night in 2016, she is doing her best to move on and start her new life. Catch up on all of the Payne in the Pod episodes, here. Sundays game had it ups and downs much like the past half decade for the Atlanta Falcons. Rody White got inducted into the Falcons ring of honor which was much deserved. Matt Ryan became the 10th NFL QB to pass for over 50,0000 yards. The O-line got a much needed boost with the return of Chris Linstrom, Matt Gono also got a chance to play and both showed well. Some of the downs in the win against the Panther came in the form of losing Calvin Ridley and Desmund Trufant for the year. All of this and more in this episode of Pound4Pound ATL Live

Let me first say the following: Thank you. I did not anticipate reaching 50 podcast episodes -- or four years of the blog as a whole -- when I recorded my first one in 2013. I have continued to write these posts and produce these episodes, in part, because of the consistent and genuine encouragement I have received from readers like you. That feedback helps keep me going. The other thing that keeps me going? It's a sentiment expressed with beauty and brevity by my guest on this milestone episode: "Always the student. Always learning." I would admire anyone who follows that philosophy, regardless of profession, but I especially admire those who preach it in local television news ... because it can be so easy to do the opposite. The business often seems to conspire sameness, and I strive to find guests on this podcast who never get comfortable or complacent. Fortunately for me, and for anyone who works at WXIA-TV in Atlanta, such a person has been the spirit of our newsroom for two decades. Brenda Wood is the reigning dean of Atlanta TV news, and she has worked in the business for forty years. In that time, she has broken barriers, interviewed dignitaries, and collected numerous awards. Beyond that, she has always seized the chance to extend her reach. She has stood out in recent years for a daily opinion segment called "Brenda's Last Word" and ambitious projects like a half-hour documentary spotlighting the work of the Carter Center in Ethiopia. In whatever she does, Wood aims to spread influence and make impact. She has been the bedrock of our building for so long that we will face a mammoth challenge when she moves on. On February 7, she is doing just that. Wood will sign off from 11Alive for the final time. Brenda Wood is my guest on this 50th episode of the Telling the Story podcast. This interview was supposed to last 30 minutes, but it went 45. Wood is rich with stories about the past, speaking about the challenges of starting her career as a black female reporter in the South. She also says plenty about the present, offering advice to young journalists on how to exercise their own influence and remain committed to their communities. And, of course, she talks about her future, which will be filled with that wonderful sentiment: "Always the student. Always learning." → The post PODCAST EPISODE #50: Brenda Wood, anchor, WXIA-TV appeared first on Telling The Story.

Andy and Golfwidow talk about food a lot. It's only fair that I do too. I talk about musquirt, its mayonnaise equivalent, stuff I cook, stuff my wife cooks, and Mama Fu's Asian House. Links: Musquirt Deliquescing Mama Fu's I also want to draw your attention to this story: Teens Toss Feces on Shopper. Seriously, you have to watch the video. It's muy hilarioso, especially the second soundbite from the woman. it was our (*wait for it*) #2 story on 11Alive.com all morning yesterday. Since this is Podcrapular, I think it's a requirement that I mention poop every now and then. (I have PC Lite episodes from GW and Andy waiting to be edited, so those'll be coming as soon as I can edit them. It's been a bit busy around these parts. Also, I have two more episodes I recorded already "in the can", as it were. I just keep forgetting to post.)

We've got a new website! And we hope you like it... Give us some feedback and some ideas on ways to make it better. In other news, we begin our coverage of the new tailgating rules and we're asking you for feedback. Check out these articles before you come up with your questions. 11Alive has a good one, as well as WSB-TV. I love both of the Red and Black's articles including an excellent opinion piece.
