And it finally happened, the Eagles suffered their first loss on Monday Night Football and Jason gives us his biggest takeaway from the game (30:05), why he's sick of everyone rushing to blame it on the refs (31:10), and why going undefeated gets too hyped up by every team every year (37:10). Finally, we check out how the NFLPA is using New Heights to promote #Saferfields (42:50), find out which field left the biggest mark on Travis (46:15), and look at the incredible turnout from the German fans (50:08). We also answer some of the week's biggest questions; did the Bills and Vikings ruing the QB sneak (55:00), is there crying in football (01:01:50) and did Jeff Saturday earn himself a New Heights Stamp of the week (01:04:12)? We wrap with a look ahead to the Eagles heading to Indy to see Coach Jeff Saturday in person (01:07:25) and see if Travis will try and repeat his attempt to jump over Derwin James when the Chiefs take on the Chargers in LA (01:13:00). On the eleventh episode of New Heights, we have our first-ever in-person sit-down interview with the #1 quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts. Jalen is currently having an MVP-caliber season so it's really exciting to be able to share this conversation with everyone. In this episode, Jason and Travis get an answer to maybe the most important New Heights question, what's Jalen calling on 4th & 1. (5:25) We also touch on Jalen's first impressions of being under center behind Jason (9:50), the backstory to the squat video everyone can't stop talking about (12:20), why he hopes Jason keeps playing for at least a few more years (23:02), and his surprising reaction to hearing his name called by the Eagles on Draft Night (26:00). The guys also chop it up about the philosophy of playing quarterback in the NFL (37:28), reveal Jalen's QB Mt. Rushmore (43:47), dive into his special relationship with the Manning family (48:36), get his real thoughts on the MVP conversation (54:47), and debate the right way for NFL players to watch football games (56:34). We also have some incredible stories of Jalen's time at Alabama (01:01:17) and how that prepared him for playing in front of Philly fans (01:06:18), his plans to teach Jason the griddy (01:12:25), and our first-ever guest New Heights Stamp of the Week (01:15:06). “FROM PATIENT TO PH.D: AFTER SUFFERING A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY, I HAVE DEDICATED MY LIFE TO EXPLORING THERAPEUTIC OPTIONS THAT RESTORE NEUROLOGICAL FUNCTION AND PROVIDE NEURONAL PROTECTION.”Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) affect 100 million of people around the world annually and contribute to other neurological disorders such as dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Military service members are particularly at risk for TBI. Jayme joined the Army following high school, serving as an airborne combat medic and while deployed to Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne in late 2009, he witnessed and treated numerous TBI even becoming a victim of one himself. Those experiences motivated James to go from patient to Ph.D.—becoming the catalyst that led him to the field of neuroscience and the foundation of his education, his research and his volunteer work.Following medical retirement in 2012, Jayme attended Western Michigan University where he received his B.S. in biology and chemistry minor with concentration in neuroscience. As an undergraduate he began his scientific career investigating therapeutic candidates following trauma to the central nervous system, publishing a first-author paper identifying neuronal protection in the adult zebrafish following damage. Jayme is currently a 5th yr Ph.D. candidate at the University of Notre Dame under the guidance of Dr. David Hyde, where he has developed a novel blunt-force TBI model in regenerative zebrafish allowing for the examination of both the injury and the regenerative recovery. His work has been nationally recognized by the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Department of Defense, and Pat Tillman Foundation. He has identified injury-induced activated regeneration, the originating regenerative source, and replacement of lost and damaged brain tissue. He aims to further understand the complex gene regulation providing a potential neuroprotective and regenerative therapeutic to at-risk populations such as service members.Links: IG: delta.and.dopamineLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hentig/YouTube 3 minute Synopsis on my research: https://youtu.be/TrPcVIiMCBQTillman Scholar Profile: https://pattillmanfoundation.org/meet-our-scholars/james-hentig/ Jayme HentigNSF Fellow | Tillman ScholarU.S. Army (Retired)|Ph.D. Candidate|Dr. David R. In September 2000 Notre Dame named (was not named before) their business school the Mendoza College of Business after an endowment from Tom and Kathy Mendoza.
In episode 46, David Epstein, Best Selling Author, joins us. Specifically David will be looking at: What range is Why range is superior Impact of improved range How to practically get more range About David "David Epstein is the author of the #1 New York Times best seller Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World — which Bill Gates featured in his end-of-year recommendations — and of the New York Times best seller The Sports Gene, both of which have been translated in more than 20 languages. (To his surprise, the latter was purchased not only by his sister but also by President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.) He is also the host of Slate's popular “How To!” podcast. He was previously a science and investigative reporter at ProPublica, and prior to that a senior writer at Sports Illustrated, where he co-authored the story that revealed Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez had used steroids. His writing has been honored by an array of organizations, from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, to the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Center on Disability and Journalism, and has been included in the Best American Science and Nature Writing anthology. His story “Following the Trail of Broken Hearts,” on sudden cardiac death in athletes, was chosen as one of the top 100 stories of the last 100 years by Columbia Journalism alumni. David has given talks about performance science and the uses (and misuses) of data on five continents; his TED Talks (here and here) have been viewed more than 10 million times. Three of his stories have been optioned for films: a Sports Illustrated story on the only living Olympian to have survived a concentration camp; an Atlantic/ProPublica piece detailing the DEA's fraught pursuit of Chapo Guzman's rivals; and a 2016 “This American Life” episode he wrote and narrated about a woman with two rare diseases who shares a mutant gene with an Olympic medalist. David has master's degrees in environmental science and journalism, and is reasonably sure he's the only person to have co-authored a paper in the journal of Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research while a writer at Sports Illustrated. (Like many of the characters in Range, he has benefitted from a winding career.) He has worked as an ecology researcher in the Arctic, studied geology and astronomy while residing in the Sonoran Desert, and blithely signed up to work on the D-deck of a seismic research vessel shortly after it had been attacked by pirates. David enjoys volunteering with the Pat Tillman Foundation and Classroom Champions, and, as of recently, with the National COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Project. An avid runner, he was a Columbia University record holder and twice NCAA All-East as an 800-meter runner." Technology/aviation episode: Mike Christman is a product manager at Google and, previously, a CIA intelligence analyst turned Marine AH-1 attack helicopter pilot. With the Marines, he served two tours in Afghanistan and three total. On his first, he flew regular combat missions against the Taliban in the Helmand Valley. On his next, he became a forward air controller, guiding close air support onto targets while embedded with infantry. He was selected as a 2014 Tillman Military Scholar by the Pat Tillman Foundation. I’d encourage you to check out some of his articles linked below. Today, we speak about his nine years with the Marines engaging in faraway firefights, and then his big transition to business school and, ultimately, Google. Today's Wellness Check is with Rory Fanning, who has many extremely interesting stories to tell. Rory and Brad met about a decade ago through Rick Telander, who walked with Rory in the Arizona desert while Rory was trekking across the country to raise money for his fallen Army Ranger comrade and former Arizona Cardinal Pat Tillman. Rory enlisted in the Army after Sept. 11 because he felt it was the patriotic thing to do. After spending time serving in Afghanistan, he grew very unhappy with the United States' war effort and became a war resistor. Most of his leaders and fellow servicemen felt he was a disgrace but Tillman was very supportive. Shortly after Tillman was killed by supposed "friendly fire," Rory was discharged. He tried to take up a "normal life" as an investment banker, but found it unfulfilling and decided to walk across the United States to raise money for the Pat Tillman Foundation and to raise awareness of Rory's war resistance movement. In addition to that amazing accomplishment, Rory spends time talking classrooms and other groups to share experiences from his time in the military. Rory is also a big Cubs fan and talks about how he's able to enjoy the team even though he might not exactly agree with the politics of its ownership. Rory now works and writes for Haymarket Books. Among the many titles they've published are Craig Hodges memoir "Long Shot: The Triumphs and Struggles of an NBA Freedom Fighter" and Scoop Jackson's book "The Game is Not a Game: The Power, Protest and Politics of American Sports." Rory is also a woodworker, so he and Brad talk a bit about that and much more. Follow Rory on Twitter: twitter.com/RTFanning. On November 9, 2010, Zach Stinson, a Marine fighting in Afghanistan, stepped on an IED. The blast took both of his legs, and a few fingers. But, the blast did not take his zeal for life. Listening to him talk about this experience, you would never think that he's faced great challenges and extremely low moments trying to get back to the normalcy of everyday life. He has handled his injuries with the same bravery and stoicism he displayed when taking "point" while searching the village compound that hid the IED that changed his life forever. He's even looked past his injuries and "limits" and started competing in triathlons as a double amputee. Zach Stinson's story is amazing, and one we all can take inspiration from, no matter what our station is in life. Check it out on this latest edition of HAZARD GROUND! When Pasha Palanker was 15, he and his family immigrated to the U.S. from Moldova. Although his family lived in a rough neighborhood on a very low income, Pasha was happy and proud to be living in America, whose opportunities far outnumbered those of his birthplace. In an effort to repay the U.S. government for the assistance provided to him and his family after they arrived from Moldova, Pasha enlisted in the Army, shortly after the war in Iraq kicked off in 2003. Following multiple deployments to Iraq, Pasha had been blown up more than once, and suffered multiple Traumatic Brain Injuries. His experiences left him with the lasting effects of PTSD. In this episode he talks about his journey - how he survived multiple blasts and came face-to-face with a suicide bomber, and how he is now working through the issues caused by his injuries. This is an open and insightful conversation about the indelible wounds of war we can't see that are still plaguing servicemembers long after they come home. www.getheadstrong.org | www.teamrubiconusa.org Do your Amazon shopping with us, and give back to veterans organizations at the same time! Normally, this week's guest would be billed as a "Special Guest" as Joe Galloway was never actually in the military. But if history has anything to say about it, there's no doubt he's earned his stripes, going all the way back to his first overseas assignments in Vietnam. Early on, Galloway was embedded with the 1st Cavalry Division during the Battle of Ia Drang, the first major battle of the Vietnam War. He not only covered the battle, but also fought to save the lives of other American soldiers during fierce ground fighting. He was eventually awarded the Bronze Star with "V" for Valor for rescuing wounded soldiers under fire at Ia Drang, becoming the only civilian to receive a combat medal from the Army during the Vietnam War. Galloway would serve a total of four tours in Vietnam, and then cover every major American conflict up to the Global War on Terror. He's been described as "a soldier’s reporter and a soldier’s friend,” and there's no doubt that sentiment shines through in this latest episode of HAZARD GROUND! Patrick Murphy is the first Iraq War veteran elected to the U.S. Congress, representing Pennsylvania. Following his time in Congress, he was confirmed as the 32nd Under Secretary of the Army, serving until January 2017. Murphy may be a veteran of U.S. politics, but this conversation is anything but a political one. Murphy deployed to Iraq in 2003 with the 82nd Airborne, and also taught at West Point during his tenure as a U.S. Army officer. He’s a special breed of leader who truly understands what it means to be a patriot and look beyond self to serve the greater good for those around him and the people he once directly represented in Congress. He’s made holistic changes for the better in the military, and he continues to lead as a vetrepreneur and soldier-statesman today. While taking a semester off from college, Gene Murphy received what many young men his age feared at the time - a draft notice for Vietnam. Murphy considered it an honor to serve his country, so leaving his small, South Dakota farming community for the Army and Vietnam, was tough, but not a big deal. When he shipped off to Vietnam, he figured as a mortarman he'd probably be stationed at a basecamp somewhere and not spend much time in the jungle. But the situation changed rapidly when he hit the ground, and he quickly went from mortarman to infantryman living in the jungle. Just 30 days before the end of his 12-month tour, Murphy was shot twice during a firefight and left paralyzed below the waste. His attitude throughout it all and to this day has been nothing short of amazing. And he's carried that positivity into leading and serving a key role in the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization in South Dakota for over 40 years. As far back as he can remember, Michael Rutledge wanted to be a Naval Aviator. He lacked the grades to get him there, so he enlisted in the Navy, eventually becoming a Navy SEAL. Unable to ignore his desire to fly in the military, after 8 years as a SEAL, Rutledge started the process to transfer to the Army to fly helicopters. All of this happened not long before 9/11. Despite his love for the Teams and its inherent brotherhood, Rutledge felt a greater calling to make it into the aviator ranks and fly in combat. He would be one of the very few aviators that would go from flight school straight into the Army's elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Rutledge shares with us the high's and low's of his journey, and what it meant to be a part of some of the military's most daring and precise missions, on this latest edition of HAZARD GROUND! Following his childhood dream to serve in the military, Zachary Rhyner joined the Air Force in 2004. He knew he wanted to serve in an elite group, that would no doubt face challenges in combat. Rhyner enlisted with the goal of becoming a combat controller. After a grueling two-and-a-half-year selection and training process, he became a special tactics combat controller. He would soon go on to serve with a Special Operations team, seeing their fare share of combat in Afghanistan. It was on one of those missions that he and his team would face extremely daunting challenges, fighting to their objective up 60-foot cliffs against a very well-defended enemy force. Rhyner's actions during that particular battle would earn him the Air Force Cross - the second highest military award that can be given to a member of the United States Air Force. During his sixth deployment, Rhyner would sustain injuries that ended his military career, but were the catalyst for him to continue a legacy of service with the help of the Pat Tillman Foundation. What an absolutely amazing story! Driven by a keen interest in medicine & a desire to give back to his country, Karl Holt joined the Army to become a Green Beret medic. After several years of assessment, selection, & special forces training, Holt found himself in the heat of combat, putting his SF medic training to use. On one particular mission though, while trying to escape an overwhelming counterattack, the helicopter Holt was riding in crashed & literally fell out of the sky into a 2-story building. There were few survivors. Badly injured, Holt managed to escape the wreckage with the help of his friend & fellow SF teammate. Following recovery & many, many surgeries, he decided to pursue his Medical Degree, so he could continue to serve & help others as a physician. With the help of the Pat Tillman Foundation, through which Holt is a Tillman Scholar, he is on his way to completing medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill. Marie founded Mac & Mia out of her garage in 2014 while on maternity leave from her day job as president of the Pat Tillman Foundation, a non-profit organization named after her first husband that’s awarded more than $14 million in academic scholarships to military veterans and their spouses. In this episode, Marie tells us about why she decided to get into e-commerce, the inspiration behind Mac & Mia, and the parallels she sees in leading a startup venture and the foundation. We recorded this segment on site after taking a tour of Mac & Mia’s headquarters—a warehouse space in downtown Chicago.
Chris Roessner's attitude and work ethic speak for themselves. In a relatively short period of his life, he's gone from surviving a year in Iraq in the Sunni Triangle performing a wartime mission with one of the lowest survival rates, to being awarded a prestigious academic scholarship through the Pat Tillman Foundation, to writing and executive producing his own film, "Sand Castle," which recently debuted as a Netflix Original Movie in April 2017. Part of his reason for joining the military, like so many other young soldiers, was to earn money for college. That decision set Chris on a path to discover his passion for writing and motion pictures, and it's clear he's taken advantage of every opportunity he's earned along the way. It's not too often that your first major screenplay is made into a movie as quickly as "Sand Castle" was. And most importantly, Chris was able to make a film that was as true as possible to the experience he and so many others like him had serving in combat - a feat that's not easily achieved. If you're looking for inspiration, you'll find it in the story of Chris Roessner! @CitizenRoessner | www.pattillmanfoundation.org/scholar/chris-roessner/ | "Sand Castle" (www.netflix.com/title/80118916)
