Juan and his family immigrated to the United States when he was a young boy. Growing up in a working class family taught Juan the value of hard work and the importance of a can-do attitude.Juan attended public schools in Tucson, Pima Community College and the University of Arizona. He worked his way through school with maintenance and service jobs until becoming the first in his family to graduate from college. After college, Juan worked for the University of Arizona and the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce before joining Arizona Governor Doug Ducey's administration as Senior Advisor and Vice-Chair of the Arizona-Mexico Commission. We come to the US, learn English, immerse in the culture, become US citizens, I drive a bus most of my life, and now my son is a United States Congressman. Where else in the world? Nowhere else, that's the American Dream.”Juan is determined to fight to keep that dream alive for others. On this show I chat with Adam Baldy. Adam holds an MA in East Asian Studies and is a PhD student at the University of Arizona. As a Senior IT Systems Analyst at Pima Community College, he blends his in-person and online teaching experience with ed tech management.Highlights·      Starting a doctoral program is a big decision (perhaps the biggest decision you will ever make). If at any time you feel pressured to start a program, question the motives of that organization.·      Do your research! Speak with current students, graduates, and faculty. Ask for  time-to-completion statistics and graduation rates. Complete the exercises in Ch. 1 of The Happy Doc Student Handbook. See episodes below.·      There are unique challenges for first-generation college students and navigating the unfamiliar territory of graduate school can add to an already stressful environment. ·      Graduate school will happen in the context of your LIFE; there are no easy answers when it comes to deciding how to manage your own mental health, supporting others, building a career, etc.·      Knowing your core values is key; you will have to let some things go; be honest in terms of your priorities during this season.·      Embracing a part-time program may allow you to balance work, academia, and family life.·      Like stepping into a doctoral program, stepping out of one is also a big decision. Be cautious of “reacting."  Instead, responded thoughtfully to these feelings (see the I-Think-I-Want-To-Stop activity in The Happy Doc Student Handbook). ·      If you do decide to step out (whether forever or for a season), refrain from feelings of guilt/failure and listen to the Good Goodbye episode:  https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/8016142 Connect with Adamhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/adam-baldry-ab6501117/Relevant episodes for when you are researching programs:#2 The Doc Journey: Things You Need to Know (that they probably won't tell you)#21 Should I Pursue a Doctoral Degree? with Dr. Chris Cappannelli#31 Reality Check: Is a Doc Program for You? with Jamie Hillman#53 Are We Teaching Students To Be Unhappy? with Dr. Leonard Cassuto#69 Career Diversity & The Doctorate with Dr. Leonard CassutRelevant episodes for when you want to STOP:#7 When You Want to Quit with Dr. Jodie Hemerda#10 ABD, Limiting Beliefs and Giants with Dr. Scott BurrusSupport the showSupport this free content: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/supporters/new Get The Happy Doc Student Handbook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578333732Other resources at: http://Expandyourhappy.com Treat me to a green tea: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/expandyourhappyWant to make my day? Our Great Coach on this episode is American women's basketball coach Brenda Frese While injured as a player at the University of Arizona, Brenda volunteered as an assistant coach at Pima Community College. After graduation in 1994 she started as an assistant coach at Kent State. In 1999 she was appointed into her first Head Coach role at Ball state and then in 2002 to the University of Maryland. Her success with Maryland places her in the elite levels of women's basketball, the highlights of which are: · 2006 NCAA Championship · the 2009 and 2012 ACC Championships · Big Ten champions in 2015 · 4x Big Ten Coach of the Year (2002, 2015, 2019, 2021); National Coach of the year awards in 2021, 2013 and 2002 · And a winning % of 78 at the end of the 2021 season. Brenda is the type of calm, spirited leader who can see a clear path forward when the anxiety within the team is at its apex. She is able to regulate her emotions, and response in such a way that it matches the moment and helps to build self-belief in others. She demands a lot from her athlete and support team, but you have the impression that she also gives more than she gets. There were many key parts of this interview but some of the key points that stayed with me afterwards were: Her view that great coaches are able to connect with people in a way that makes the person feel like they are worth a million dollars. Her view that women in leadership positions need to move beyond being grateful and lead the change they want to see. Her focus on positivity and bringing confident energy into practices and game day; as she this enables you to produce the best performance that you are capable of. This was a wonderful conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Born: Panama Canal Zone 1956 Hometown: Sierra Vista, AZ Occupation: Career Musician, Organ/keyboards, Entertainer, Composer, Recording Artist, Studio Engineer Experience: 40 years Self Taught Lamont Arthur has been playing, composing and teaching jazz in Tucson for the last three decades. Born in Panama, the son of an army soldier, Lamont found himself growing up at Ft. Huachuca in Southern Arizona. At the age of 12 he became aware of his passion for music. He learned to play the Glockenspiel from his 6th grade music teacher Mrs. Smith. He turned his musical attention to the Hammond B-3 organ and played in mixed-ethnic rock and country groups at places like the Blue Room and Carr Canyon Corral in Sierra Vista. By the late seventies he had moved to Tucson and began playing with groups like Street Pajama, Rapid Transit, Bloolyte, Bondavi and legendary blues-man Sam Taylor to name just a few. He began playing gigs at many of the clubs in Tucson; the Pirates Den, Fun Factory, Bobby McGee's, The Doubletree, Nino's, Gentle Ben's and Merlin's. The scene was very open and loose at that time and his ability to play the Hammond B-3 allowed him to crossover as well and play blues, reggae, latin and gospel. His love for jazz music prompted him to take the jazz improvisation class at Pima Community College under the tutelage of sax man Mike Kuhn and he was asked to assist him with some of the more novice musicians. This, was the turning point for what would become his passion to be a mentor and a better jazz musician. Not only as a keyboardist but as a jazz scat vocalist as well.. For a 7 year stint ('93-2000) he played in a keyboard/guitar duo with Phil Davis named L.A.P.D. at Sakura Japanese Restaurant. They reached a cult status with their penchant for playing standards and uptempo barn-burners then turning things right around to play cumbias or R&B dance tunes. Legions of Tucson-ans flocked to Sakura for their performances. During his career Lamont has tried to give back to the community through his gift of music. He has performed for the Tucson Jazz Society, the Oro Valley Jazz Festival, the Jazz Guild of Tucson, and the Rising Star Baptist Church.. He has collaborated with Tucson Jazz fixtures such as pianist Dan "Sly" Slipetsky, trumpeter Tony Frank, trombonist Rob Boone, bassist Elliot "Kirk" Kuykendal and drummer Gil Rodriguez. He has also been involved in many recording endeavors and has a gospel/Christian CD of all original songs on itunes entitled: "It's Time For Knowing". Over the last several years he has been mentoring a stable of young musicians. One is currently enrolled at the Arizona Jazz Academy. Often he will get a student who is classically trained and Lamont puts it on himself to get them to "get off the sheet" and use their hearts and ears to bring out the music that dwells within them. He has also mentored many musicians within the church. Having not been mentored himself as a young music- ian he feels that being a mentor is a great way to give the younger musicians a head start and leave a continuing musical legacy especially for the future "serious jazz musicians". Lamont had to move back to Sierra Vista to be closer to his mother. He has been an unsung hero in the Tucson Jazz Community and the JJA for 2012 would be a fitting way to acknowledge his humble persona and love of music. Beyond the Music; Jake

Abdi Abdirahman is a 5-time Olympian in the 10,000m and marathon. Born in Somalia, he fled the country along with his parents and 4 siblings in the midst of a civil war at just 13 years old. After spending several years in a refugee camp in Mombasa, Kenya, he immigrated to the United States through a program for Somali refugees. It wasn't until his freshman year at Pima Community College that he would set foot on his first track but it was immediately clear that he was very talented. As a junior, he transferred to the University of Arizona where he would begin to train under Coach Dave Murray (who is still his coach to this day) and kick off a running career that has seen Abdi consistently compete at the elite level and represent the United States on the world stage for the last quarter of a century through present day.   In this episode, we discuss how he got his infamous "Black Cactus" nickname, the ways he continues to find fun in the sport after all this time, and the secret to his longevity in this sport at the elite level among other things.   Show notes: Runners Who Read Book Club: www.atlantatrackclub.org/runners-who-read   Follow Abdi: Twitter: @Abdi_runs Instagram: @abdiruns   Follow Olivia Twitter: @obaker64 Instagram: @obaker64

This episode delves into the world of Assisted Living and its ramifications and a lady that focuses on finding the right facility for her clients within these facilities. Both with excellent reputations they give a comprehensive overview of assisted living in Tucson.About Angelica Valenzuela Owner/Caregiver of Truval Assisted Living Home. A true professional with an extensive career in Public and Nonprofit Management helping vulnerable populations: Homeless, HIV/AIDS, women, and children impacted by HIV/AIDS. For the last eight years, I have focused my mission to serve the elder population through assisted living in Tucson, AZ. I was born in Mexico and educated in the United States. I obtained my bachelor's degree from Florida International University and a master's degree from California State University Northridge University. When I moved to AZ to be closer to my aging parents, I began looking for a new mission and everything pointed to helping elders as my next move to serve others. I began getting educated about the Assisted Living business in Arizona, got certified as a caregiver in the three levels of care (Supervisory, Personal and Directed). I formed Truval Management Services and I started Truval Assisted Living, about eight years ago. Truval Assisted Living is a residential care home in the Catalina Foothills on 4445 North Pontatoc Road. We care for elders that cannot live independently or that their loved ones cannot longer care for them at home due to their need for assistance and care with all their daily activities. Truval is certified by the Arizona Department of Health to care for a maximum of 10 residents at any given time. We care for elders who suffer from any or a combination of aging diseases such as Dementia, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, among many other ailments. Our work is non-stop; we provide loving care for elders 24/7. Depending on their level of care we provide as much care as is needed throughout the day and night. We manage their medications, provide their three meals and snacks, we shower them, do their daily laundry, and engage them in daily activities, among many other things we do. Many individuals in our community do not know that Assisted Living Homes exist. They know of the large Nursing facilities. But, Assisted Living services constitute a large segment of the community and a large number of caring individuals that serve our aging population in Tucson. Our work is the collaboration of many people and entities in the community to serve the elder population with dignity and respect. We partner with the AZ Department of Health to maintain compliance with State regulations and to maintain our certification and license as an assisted living home. We also partner with Placement Agencies such as Southern Arizona Placement Agency (SAPA) for referral of new residents and also by word of mouth from previous relatives of residents we've cared for. We also partner with Home Health agencies for Medical Care at our facility and to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations; and with Hospice agencies, to help us with palliative care at the facility during their last stages, so they can pass with dignity and love. Truval Assisted Living Home 4445 N. Pontotoc Rd. Tucson, AZ 85718 Ph. 520.338.2261 / Fax 520.338.2263 About Tess MewI was raised in Tucson AZ. I attended Pima Community College and attended and graduated from the U of A with a BA in Psychology and sociology. I worked with the at-risk substance use and mentally ill population while raising my two boys while attending college for 8 years. I worked at Codac Behavioral Health with at-risk populations including aging clients with substance abuse and mental health disorders. Codac created a specific position for me to be able to work closely with clients specifically in residential treatment homes and programs in the Tucson community. It was during this time that I became interested in the relationships required to place clients in homes that matched their needs. When I left Codac I assisted a startup company that was interested in doing senior placement referrals. Two years later I decided to start my own company in order to add pieces I felt were missing in this particular industry. Southern Arizona Placement Agency is dedicated to providing seniors and their families with a broad range of options and resources in order to locate quality services for our seniors in southern Arizona. We specialize in identifying the most appropriate and cost-effective level of care. We have close relationships with assisted living communities, assisted living homes, hospice companies, VA benefits, respite care, day programs, in-home care, Arizona long-term care, movers, Medicaid specialists, and many other resources. https://azplacementagency.com linkedin.com/in/tessmew-4146862a (520) 345-0297 siraphim@yahoo.com

The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

This was a wonderful conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did. “Another piece of data that I think is extremely important to collect is student feedback. Students are our reason for being and sometimes you have to remind people of that.” - Dr. Penny Turrentine In the final part of a short series of podcast episodes, we conclude a discussion with Penny Turrentine, Ph. D., Adjunct Faculty and Program Coordinator at Pima Community College, about another foundational pillar upon which to successfully build your college or university Learning Center. Her book, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Learning Centers (and then some…), inspired these discussions and focuses on the fundamentals for learning center directors, including seeking feedback from those you serve. Penny points out that data collection is important for demonstrating to your administrators and others the importance of your mission. During her twenty-seven years in the field, Dr. Turrentine has specialized in working with student-athletes and published, Champions in the Classroom, a professional reference guide for student-athletes, learning support staff, coaches, advisors, parents, and school administrators. She earned her BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Arizona, selecting studies in sociology, psychology, and exercise and sport sciences as preparation for her goal of working with student-athletes in the academic area. She went on to earn her Master's degree from the University of Arizona College of Education with a minor in exercise and sport sciences before moving on to earn her doctorate. She recently "retired" as the director of the West Campus Learning Center at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. Though, Dr. Turrentine continues to teach and coordinate the Aztec Academics program for the Athletic Department at Pima College - designing and implementing a series of student success workshops that draw parallels between athletic skills and academic skills. Her recent publication, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Learning Centers (and then some…), presents fundamentals for learning center directors, such as welcoming each student and going above and beyond to show that you care. Penny gives examples of building rapport through playfulness, attending student games as a team, and training her staff for interactions with students. In this episode, he and podcast host Kiran Kodithala (CEO, N2N Services Inc.) discuss how community colleges can be a disruptive force in the movement to make higher education more accessible and affordable to all.Community colleges play several critical roles in helping students continue their education. They offer associate’s degrees and certificate programs for individuals who are seeking skills and workplace development. They offer more affordable general education options for students who want to transfer to a four-year institution. They also provide an easy avenue back into education for students who have been in the workforce already. As an institutional leader, Lee shares how important it is for him to always look ahead and anticipate trends and changes in the world, so the college can update or create new programs to meet the needs of students and future employers. For example, unbundling of degree programs is a growing trend that will allow students to take more ownership in their learning journeys and focus on the skills they need most.Listen now to hear more from Lee on how institutions like Pima play a special role in their local communities as well as in the world of higher education.  You can also connect with Lee on LinkedIn or Twitter, and learn more about Pima Community College on their website.Don’t forget to subscribe to the show on iTunes, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.See you in the next episode.

I am delighted to share this conversation with Mays Imad.   Mays serves as a Professor of Genetics, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Pima Community College and is the founding coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Center.  Her current research focuses on stress, self-awareness, advocacy, and classroom community.   Through her teaching and research, Mays seeks to provide students with transformative opportunities which are grounded in the aesthetics of learning, truth-seeking, and self-realization.   In this interview Mays talks about her own journey from a humanities undergraduate to a STEM postgraduate and how her research developed through her deep love of teaching.   She talks about the difference between ‘good' and ‘bad' stress and how, when it is overwhelmed, the brain can become hijacked by emotions which hinder the capacity to process information as the focus is on survival.   She identifies how the experience of the pandemic has caused many people to slow down cognitively and how it is important to attend to activating our natural ‘reward network' in order to calm the nervous system and allow information to pass to the cortex.    Mays references John O Donohue's discussion of cultivating a landscape of interiority.  You can access a recording with him here: https://onbeing.org/programs/john-odonohue-the-inner-landscape-of-beauty-aug2017/   Mays closes with an invitation to cultivate a sense of wonder through engaging with creativity and beauty.

This week on the show, Bea joins Megan Strand for a conversation on the challenges of teaching, learning, and leading through COVID and more. “There are two approaches that are core to how I manage,” says Bea. “The first is teaching. If the audience doesn’t understand what I’m talking about, the organization isn’t growing. We’re all educators in that realm. Second, explaining my decisions to my direct reports is important for their development so they can see what the factors are in decisions and how factors are weighted in the final outcome.” Join us this week for a conversation with David Bea as he takes us through his efforts to lead and educate his team and his institution through crisis and change. Listen for his insights in developing future CBO leaders, even in times of great change.

The themes of Odyssey shows are always open to broad interpretation, and Ryan Malco's story from the 2015 Independence show was a unique take on the idea. In explaining his religious views (or more accurately, lack thereof), Ryan tells the tale of what was, for at least a few seconds, his own death, and the freedom he derives from his first-hand knowledge that there is nothing whatsoever beyond the veil. From Ryan's Odyssey bio: Ryan Malco is a stand-up comedian and bartender who hosts a weekly comedy show at O'Malley's called "Pale Blue. Comedy" and coproduces a political comedy show on the last Sunday of every month at Skybar called "Laughing Liberally." Let's face it. Internal audit can be a very stressful job, which is why on this episode we discuss yoga and breathing as tools to help center yourself, reduce your stress, and increase your productivity as an auditor. You may be asking: "how can yoga help me be a better auditor?" Listen in and you will find out the answer, along with practical tips for how you can do little activities during the day (even as little as 5-90 seconds at a time) to help you become more aware, make better decisions, reduce stress and improve your productivity. Mindful activities (like yoga) are one of the often overlooked tools that can make you into a super auditor. In fact, what we discuss is also used by elite military special forces to help them perform better in the field. If it helps them, it can also help you. I'm joined by Kurt Weirich who is Director, Office of the Internal Auditor at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to being a career auditor, he is also a registered yoga teacher, RYT-200 with Yoga Alliance, the largest global yoga organization, and has started local yoga groups at Pima Community College and his local home owners association, so he knows a lot about yoga and helping to create a space for mindful practices in our communities and workplaces. Kurt is also the President Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Tucson Chapter, the Membership Director ISACA Tucson Chapter, and is the designated representative for the College at the Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA), a professional organization comprised of audit, compliance and risk professionals. Kurt also has earned professional auditor certifications and compliance designations including Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Information Security Auditor (CISA), Payment Card Industry Professional (PCIP), and Certified HIPAA Professional (CHP).

A year ago this December, Sergio Calderon bravely took the stage at Odyssey's "Fraught" show to talk about why he was more afraid of going to school than going to Afghanistan. From his Odyssey biography: Sergio Calderon is a Tucson native who is currently attending the University of Arizona. In May, he will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in Journalism. While it all looks like roses and butterflies, Calderon grew up the youngest of five in a tough Amphitheater neighborhood. Upon graduating high school, he had no options other than to join the Marine Corps in 2006. As a reservist in Tucson he was first deployed to Djibouti, Africa in 2008. At the age of 21 he felt like he needed to gain a degree and change the world once more and by 2010 Calderon had enrolled at Pima Community College. After two semesters, he dropped out of college with nowhere to turn leading him to his second deployment to Afghanistan in 2012. Seven near death experiences in combat and one epiphany later he decided to return to college eventually being accepted to the University of Arizona in 2014. While at the university he has become the President of Omega Delta Phi Fraternity where he commits over 80 hours of community service a semester to helping young Hispanic children strive for higher education. He hopes by his hard work more children will go on to get their degrees and change the world as well. Jared Yazzie is Diné and the owner of OXDX Clothing. He also happens to be the brother of previous NextGen Native guest and NASA engineer, Aaron Yazzie. Jared went to the University of Arizona on a full ride scholarship to study engineering. But after a few years, he realized that path was not for him. Jared left the university and enrolled at Pima Community College. He would transition into arts.  During this time he started to sell shirts out of his car trunk. This is where the hustle of what would become OXDX began. After college Jared went to work for a screen print shop. He continued to design and print his own shirts. On the weekends, Jared traveled to the reservation to sell his merchandise. He found that while he was onto something, not everyone was supportive. Jared had to learn how to listen to negative feedback while not internalizing it. Originally, Jared’s company was called Overdose. The name was taken from a lyric in Lupe Fiasco’s “Baba Says Cool for Thought” where a line warns not to “overdose on the cool.” Jared found the lyrics resonated with his experience moving from the rez to a city where there was potential to overdose on everything a city has to offer. Overtime, Overdose evolved into OXDX and the name has stuck ever since. ### Subscribe iTunes Stitcher RSS ### OXDX is building a following. Perhaps the company’s most famous design to date is the “Native Americans Discovered Columbus” tee. Jared designed it but did not understand how big of a hit it would be until  Jessica Metcalf put the shirt on her Beyond Buckskin Boutique. Another design is making a resurgence after Bobby Wilson of the 1491s wore a “Mis-Rep” shirt on The Daily Show during a segment about the R******s. That particular shirt is an homage to the Misfits, one of the Yazzie brothers’ favorite punk bands, combined with a message about misappropriation. Yazzie is working to build his brand into something much bigger than it is currently. He wants it to be more than just a t-shirt company, and he wants it to be recognized beyond just Native communities. He is grinding to get to this point, and he is close to being able to do OXDX full time. But for now he is putting in long hours working both his day job and then doing OXDX afterwards. This was a great conversation that ran the gamut of shifting focus, grinding to build a business, utilizing other Native companies, supporting other Native artists, and remaining true to oneself and their vision.
