On this show I chat with Adam Baldy. Adam holds an MA in East Asian Studies and is a PhD student at the University of Arizona. As a Senior IT Systems Analyst at Pima Community College, he blends his in-person and online teaching experience with ed tech management.Highlights·      Starting a doctoral program is a big decision (perhaps the biggest decision you will ever make). If at any time you feel pressured to start a program, question the motives of that organization.·      Do your research! Speak with current students, graduates, and faculty. Ask for  time-to-completion statistics and graduation rates. Complete the exercises in Ch. 1 of The Happy Doc Student Handbook. See episodes below.·      There are unique challenges for first-generation college students and navigating the unfamiliar territory of graduate school can add to an already stressful environment. ·      Graduate school will happen in the context of your LIFE; there are no easy answers when it comes to deciding how to manage your own mental health, supporting others, building a career, etc.·      Knowing your core values is key; you will have to let some things go; be honest in terms of your priorities during this season.·      Embracing a part-time program may allow you to balance work, academia, and family life.·      Like stepping into a doctoral program, stepping out of one is also a big decision. Be cautious of “reacting."  Instead, responded thoughtfully to these feelings (see the I-Think-I-Want-To-Stop activity in The Happy Doc Student Handbook). ·      If you do decide to step out (whether forever or for a season), refrain from feelings of guilt/failure and listen to the Good Goodbye episode:  https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/8016142 Connect with Adamhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/adam-baldry-ab6501117/Relevant episodes for when you are researching programs:#2 The Doc Journey: Things You Need to Know (that they probably won't tell you)#21 Should I Pursue a Doctoral Degree? with Dr. Chris Cappannelli#31 Reality Check: Is a Doc Program for You? with Jamie Hillman#53 Are We Teaching Students To Be Unhappy? with Dr. Leonard Cassuto#69 Career Diversity & The Doctorate with Dr. Leonard CassutRelevant episodes for when you want to STOP:#7 When You Want to Quit with Dr. Jodie Hemerda#10 ABD, Limiting Beliefs and Giants with Dr. Scott BurrusSupport the showSupport this free content: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/supporters/new Get The Happy Doc Student Handbook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578333732Other resources at: http://Expandyourhappy.com Treat me to a green tea: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/expandyourhappyWant to make my day? Our Great Coach on this episode is American women's basketball coach Brenda Frese While injured as a player at the University of Arizona, Brenda volunteered as an assistant coach at Pima Community College. After graduation in 1994 she started as an assistant coach at Kent State. In 1999 she was appointed into her first Head Coach role at Ball state and then in 2002 to the University of Maryland. Her success with Maryland places her in the elite levels of women's basketball, the highlights of which are: · 2006 NCAA Championship · the 2009 and 2012 ACC Championships · Big Ten champions in 2015 · 4x Big Ten Coach of the Year (2002, 2015, 2019, 2021); National Coach of the year awards in 2021, 2013 and 2002 · And a winning % of 78 at the end of the 2021 season. Brenda is the type of calm, spirited leader who can see a clear path forward when the anxiety within the team is at its apex. She is able to regulate her emotions, and response in such a way that it matches the moment and helps to build self-belief in others. She demands a lot from her athlete and support team, but you have the impression that she also gives more than she gets. There were many key parts of this interview but some of the key points that stayed with me afterwards were: Her view that great coaches are able to connect with people in a way that makes the person feel like they are worth a million dollars. Her view that women in leadership positions need to move beyond being grateful and lead the change they want to see. Her focus on positivity and bringing confident energy into practices and game day; as she this enables you to produce the best performance that you are capable of. This was a wonderful conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at thegreatcoachespodcast@gmail.com

Born: Panama Canal Zone 1956 Hometown: Sierra Vista, AZ Occupation: Career Musician, Organ/keyboards, Entertainer, Composer, Recording Artist, Studio Engineer Experience: 40 years Self Taught Lamont Arthur has been playing, composing and teaching jazz in Tucson for the last three decades. Born in Panama, the son of an army soldier, Lamont found himself growing up at Ft. Huachuca in Southern Arizona. At the age of 12 he became aware of his passion for music. He learned to play the Glockenspiel from his 6th grade music teacher Mrs. Smith. He turned his musical attention to the Hammond B-3 organ and played in mixed-ethnic rock and country groups at places like the Blue Room and Carr Canyon Corral in Sierra Vista. By the late seventies he had moved to Tucson and began playing with groups like Street Pajama, Rapid Transit, Bloolyte, Bondavi and legendary blues-man Sam Taylor to name just a few. He began playing gigs at many of the clubs in Tucson; the Pirates Den, Fun Factory, Bobby McGee's, The Doubletree, Nino's, Gentle Ben's and Merlin's. The scene was very open and loose at that time and his ability to play the Hammond B-3 allowed him to crossover as well and play blues, reggae, latin and gospel. His love for jazz music prompted him to take the jazz improvisation class at Pima Community College under the tutelage of sax man Mike Kuhn and he was asked to assist him with some of the more novice musicians. This, was the turning point for what would become his passion to be a mentor and a better jazz musician. Not only as a keyboardist but as a jazz scat vocalist as well.. For a 7 year stint ('93-2000) he played in a keyboard/guitar duo with Phil Davis named L.A.P.D. at Sakura Japanese Restaurant. They reached a cult status with their penchant for playing standards and uptempo barn-burners then turning things right around to play cumbias or R&B dance tunes. Legions of Tucson-ans flocked to Sakura for their performances. During his career Lamont has tried to give back to the community through his gift of music. He has performed for the Tucson Jazz Society, the Oro Valley Jazz Festival, the Jazz Guild of Tucson, and the Rising Star Baptist Church.. He has collaborated with Tucson Jazz fixtures such as pianist Dan "Sly" Slipetsky, trumpeter Tony Frank, trombonist Rob Boone, bassist Elliot "Kirk" Kuykendal and drummer Gil Rodriguez. He has also been involved in many recording endeavors and has a gospel/Christian CD of all original songs on itunes entitled: "It's Time For Knowing". Over the last several years he has been mentoring a stable of young musicians. One is currently enrolled at the Arizona Jazz Academy. Often he will get a student who is classically trained and Lamont puts it on himself to get them to "get off the sheet" and use their hearts and ears to bring out the music that dwells within them. He has also mentored many musicians within the church. Having not been mentored himself as a young music- ian he feels that being a mentor is a great way to give the younger musicians a head start and leave a continuing musical legacy especially for the future "serious jazz musicians". Lamont had to move back to Sierra Vista to be closer to his mother. He has been an unsung hero in the Tucson Jazz Community and the JJA for 2012 would be a fitting way to acknowledge his humble persona and love of music. Beyond the Music; Jake

Abdi Abdirahman is a 5-time Olympian in the 10,000m and marathon. Born in Somalia, he fled the country along with his parents and 4 siblings in the midst of a civil war at just 13 years old. It wasn't until his freshman year at Pima Community College that he would set foot on his first track but it was immediately clear that he was very talented. As a junior, he transferred to the University of Arizona where he would begin to train under Coach Dave Murray (who is still his coach to this day) and kick off a running career that has seen Abdi consistently compete at the elite level and represent the United States on the world stage for the last quarter of a century through present day.   In this episode, we discuss how he got his infamous "Black Cactus" nickname, the ways he continues to find fun in the sport after all this time, and the secret to his longevity in this sport at the elite level among other things.   Show notes: Runners Who Read Book Club: www.atlantatrackclub.org/runners-who-read   Follow Abdi: Twitter: @Abdi_runs Instagram: @abdiruns   Follow Olivia Twitter: @obaker64 Instagram: @obaker64

The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

This was a wonderful conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did. In part two of a short series of podcast episodes, we speak with Penny Turrentine, Ph. D., Adjunct Faculty and Program Coordinator at Pima Community College, about another foundational pillar on which to build a successful Learning Center at your college or university. Inspired by her most recent publication, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Learning Centers (and then some…), we delve into essentials for learning center directors, including soliciting and gaining the support of faculty and administrators. During her twenty-seven years in the field, Dr. Turrentine has specialized in working with student-athletes and published, Champions in the Classroom, a professional reference guide for student-athletes, learning support staff, coaches, advisors, parents, and school administrators. She earned her BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Arizona, selecting studies in sociology, psychology, and exercise and sport sciences as preparation for her goal of working with student-athletes in the academic area. She went on to earn her Master's degree from the University of Arizona College of Education with a minor in exercise and sport sciences before moving on to earn her doctorate. She recently "retired" as the director of the West Campus Learning Center at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. Though, Dr. Turrentine continues to teach and coordinate the Aztec Academics program for the Athletic Department at Pima College - designing and implementing a series of student success workshops that draw parallels between athletic skills and academic skills. She also developed a mentoring program for student-athletes and facilitates tutor-led study halls for the athletes. She designed and developed the Student-Athlete Center for Academic Excellence and continues to be a consultant to the Athletic Department in all facets of academic support. In the field of learning assistance, Dr. Turrentine has earned Level 4 certification from the National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA). She has served both as the Arizona/Nevada director and as the SIG leader for the Learning Assistance Center Management SIG. She has been a Master level reviewer for the International Tutor Training Program Certification Program for 13 years and has coordinated the ITTPC. I am delighted to share this conversation with Mays Imad.   Mays serves as a Professor of Genetics, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Pima Community College and is the founding coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Center.  Her current research focuses on stress, self-awareness, advocacy, and classroom community.   Through her teaching and research, Mays seeks to provide students with transformative opportunities which are grounded in the aesthetics of learning, truth-seeking, and self-realization.   In this interview Mays talks about her own journey from a humanities undergraduate to a STEM postgraduate and how her research developed through her deep love of teaching.   She talks about the difference between ‘good' and ‘bad' stress and how, when it is overwhelmed, the brain can become hijacked by emotions which hinder the capacity to process information as the focus is on survival.   She identifies how the experience of the pandemic has caused many people to slow down cognitively and how it is important to attend to activating our natural ‘reward network' in order to calm the nervous system and allow information to pass to the cortex.    Mays references John O Donohue's discussion of cultivating a landscape of interiority.  You can access a recording with him here: https://onbeing.org/programs/john-odonohue-the-inner-landscape-of-beauty-aug2017/   Mays closes with an invitation to cultivate a sense of wonder through engaging with creativity and beauty.
