This week on the show, the great Yuka Honda. She's a New York musician. In the 1990s, she emerged from the fertile New York music underground with Cibo Matto alongside groups like the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, and Luscious Jackson. She's collaborated with an extensive roster of musicians, including John Zorn,David Byrne, Yoko Ono, Sean Ono Lennon, and her husband, guitarist Nels Cline. Earlier this year, we taped the conversation you're about to hear. Some of it ran as text in the Across the Horizon zine that was available at Big Ears Music Fest. What is Across the Horizon? Well, it's a collaborative series from Bob Holmes of Suss and Northern Spy Records gathering together like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate in a double LP compilation of stellar sonic explorations on August 13th. Under her Eucademix banner, Yuka has explored experimental electronics via two semi recent Farm Psychedelia EPs and her Across The Horizon contribution “A Long Slow Blink Before The Answer.” In this conversation, we get into food, art, language, and much more. Immersion consists of the husband and wife team of Colin Newman, who you may know from the veteran English rock band Wire, and Malka Spigel from the band Minimal Compact. And Nanocluster is the name of a series of collaborations between the Immersion and various guests (Laetitia Sadier, German post-rock duo Tarwater, electronic musicians Ulrich Schnauss and Scanner, and others.) Vol. 3 of Nanocluster features the NY-based ambient country band called SUSS. The veteran musicians of SUSS - Pat Irwin (the B-52s, Raybeats, 8 Eyed Spy), Bob Holmes (numun, Rubber Rodeo), and Jonathan Gregg (the Combine, the Linemen) - combine pedal steel, mandolin, national steel guitar, and other textures with electronics to create their wide open sonic landscapes, (Swim). Immersion and SUSS play music from their open-minded and atmospheric explorations, in-studio. Set list: 1. Khamsin 2. In The Far Away 3. State of Motion
1067. Think "'til" is a valid alternative to "until"? Think again! We learn about the difference between "till" and "until" and why many style guides frown on "'til." Then, we uncover the hidden power of interjections—words like "um," "huh," and "mm-hmm"—and how they help us negotiate meaning, keep conversations flowing, and even challenge artificial intelligence. The "interjections" segment was written by Bob Holmes, a science writer living in Edmonton, Canada and who until recently, had no idea how often he uses interjections. The piece originally appeared in Knowable Magazine, a digital publication dedicated to making scientific knowledge accessible to all. And they've produced a special standalone episode of their podcast about interjections, so if you want to learn more, check that out too. You can find their podcast and explore new articles at knowablemagazine.org.
Bonus episode: Knowable Magazine Podcast co-host Adam Levy talks with linguists Mark Dingemanse and Martina Wiltschko about the importance of the little “throwaway” utterances we use during conversations — such as Mmhmm, Huh? and more. Long ignored by scholarship, these interjections, as they're termed, are key to keeping conversations flowing. But that realization was recent, because much of early linguistics research was done with written text and not actual, live conversations. You can read more about interjections in the related article authored by Bob Holmes at Knowable Magazine. Find the transcript of this episode, plus other podcast episodes at knowablemagazine.org/podcast.
We continue on with our leisurely-paced examination of Ian Marter's time on Doctor Who by looking at Harry Sullivan's role in Genesis of the Daleks and Revenge of the Cybermen. The character starts out strong with Terry Nation's sidekick / buddy writing for Sullivan in Genesis, but by the time Bob Holmes writes Revenge, Harry is on the chopping block, and we witness a prickly, almost hostile relationship with Sarah and the scapegoat and butt of jokes for the Doctor — a total disintegration of the character due to no fault of Marter. Opening music is from the Genesis of the Daleks soundtrack composed by Dudley Simpson and closing music is "Rockfall" composed by Carey Blyton. We recorded this episode on 4 November 2024.
Welcome to the penultimate episode of our ninth season, featuring Pat Irwin of Suss. You may remember him from last year's Suss talk, with his bandmates Jonathan Gregg and Bob Holmes, but he's back for a solo talk this time, which allowed us to dig into his wild life in music, from his time in the the late ‘70s New York No Wave scene with The Raybeats and 8-Eyed Spy, to his work with Southern freak icons The B-52s, and his long career crafting music for TV and animation, including shows like Rocko's Modern Life and Bored to Death. Things have been very, very busy on the Suss front. This year, Irwin contributed guitars, keyboards, harmonium, and loops to Suss' fifth album, Birds & Beasts. On top of that, Suss' Bob Holmes, who also hosts the must-listen Ambient Country podcast, has launched Across the Horizon, a collaboration with Northern Spy Records that brings on board various like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Transmissions guests like Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate next year in a double LP comp. On their own, Suss members Jonathan Gregg, Bob Holmes, and Pat Irwin have been involved in musical projects, with artists like k.d. Lang, the B-52s, John Cale, David Bowie, Norah Jones, the War on Drugs and Wilco—Irwin even contributed music to Nickelodeon's Rocko's Modern Life. Since 2018, they—along with the their departed bandmate, the late cartoonist and musician Gary Lieb—have created spectral, moody soundscapes they've dubbed “Ambient Country,” which is also the name of a podcast Holmes hosts, where he highlights “the roots of the high and lonesome sound,” weaving together strands of instrumental folk, Americana, ambient, electronic, soundscapes and psychedelia. The group's latest is Suss, a self-titled collection that assembles four EPs—Night Suite, Heat Haze, Winter Was Hard, and Across the Horizon—into a majestic double album, full of slow motion twang, suspended synth drones, and gorgeous swells of pedal steel. The sports world mourns the passing of Brazilian legend Pelé, who passed away at the age of 82. Our pundits remember the illustrious career of football's beloved icon, real name Edson Arantes do Nascimento, especially Bob Holmes who saw Pelé grace the pitch in England many years ago.Elsewhere, the English Premier League returns to action; barely eight days after the conclusion of the World Cup in Qatar. We review all ten matches that resumed since Boxing Day, with Man City's convincing win over Leeds United concluding Matchday 17.Back in the region, we also look ahead to the AFF Championship's crunch match, as Malaysia take on Singapore at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on the 3rd of January. All these and more, only on Just For Kicks!
Qatar is set to be the centre of the planet this weekend making history as the first middle-east country to host the World Cup. However, for over 12 years since FIFA awarded them, the state had to answer to reports of worker abuse, homophobia, sexism & racism which are well documented with exposés in the media. On the money side, Qatar has spent over $300 billion on the event, which is over fifty times more than what Germany allocated in 2006 - money that could've been better used to fix the internal issues in the country. Will these be still remembered after the first ball is kicked and have they successfully sports-washed their global image? The emergence of LIV Golf, a new organising tournament seen as a direct challenge to the established PGA Tour, has been controversial partly due to being funded by a Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund. We speak to Bob Holmes about why this is being seen as an example of sportswashing by some parties, and how the rivalry could play out.Image Credit: EPA-EFE

Over the weekend, 12 European clubs formally launched a new European Super League (ESL). I've been filling my head with jams of all eras, both new and new to me, and EPISODE #85 of Random Old Records is just a small sample of the musical riches that can be found with a little bit of digging.Loveland, Ohio's Colemine Records (and its subsidiary Karma Chief) continue to pump out hits, and this time around you'll hear the recent offerings of the Harlem Gospel Travelers, Monophonics, and Michael Nau. Righteous, romantic soul is the vibe most of the way, then it gets slow and easy for awhile before crashing into a more rockin' finish. Along the way you'll meet The Altons, La La Brooks, Heron, Mortimer, Penetration, the Brothers of Soul, and many more. It's an hour of deep cuts for deep heads, so close your eyes and dig in! Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. Come back next month (or so) for another episode of Random Old Records. The Science of Our Most Neglected Sense karya Bob Holmes. Ada dari kamu yang merasakan hal serupa? Dengerin yuk obrolannya!

When it comes to taste, we all have our favourites. Some prefer the savoury to the sweet, while others love the salty. Some seem to pull out these incredible notes from a wine while others struggle for a description other than good. Even with our kids, some will like anything while others will fight against everything. Why is that? How our taste buds work along with our sense of smell is a fascinating discussion, but so is the idea you can get your kids to like more things if you are willing to keep pushing new foods. And you yourself can become better at describing those tastes and flavours. It's all in this episode with our guests: Bob Holmes: http://bobholmes.org/blog/ Elie Chamoun: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/326709679_The_Relationship_between_Single_Nucleotide_Polymorphisms_in_Taste_Receptor_Genes_Taste_Function_and_Dietary_Intake_in_Preschool-Aged_Children_and_Adults_in_the_Guelph_Family_Health_Study --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/foodbubble/message
After last week's Comic-Con show, things are returning to normal here at Geektown Radio podcast, as we have all the usual tv news and premiere date info, plus an interview with composer Pat Irwin.Pat Irwin has been living in and making music in New York City since the late 1970’s. He was a member of the band The B-52's for over 20 years (You can see him on keyboard in the famous 'Love Shack' video) and he also was the composer of classic, hit cartoon series 'Rocko's Modern Life', 'Nurse Jackie' and 'Feed the Beast' to name a few.More recently, Pat has been Netflix series 'The Good Cop', which stars Tony Danza as Tony Sr. (aka Big Tony), a lovable yet not exactly honourable, former NYPD officer who never followed the rules. He lives with his son, Tony Jr. (TJ), played by Josh Groban, a brilliant, straight-laced NYPD detective who makes a point of always following the rules while solving Brooklyn’s toughest cases. This “odd couple” become unofficial partners as Tony Sr. offers his overly-cautious son blunt, street-wise advice.Additionally, Pat has recently returned to his earlier work, as Nickelodeon brings out the film 'Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling', which sees Rocko return to O-Town after being in space for 20yrs, and having to deal with a more modern life than ever before! If that wasn't enough to keep Pat busy, he is also in two bands - the PI Power Trio featuring Sasha Dobson on drums and vocals and Daria Grace on bass and vocals, and SUSS featuring Bob Holmes, Gary Leib, Jonathan Gregg and William Garrett. Also On This Week's Show:I'm joined by Darryl in the co-host seat this week, so we chat about the tv shows, games, and films. We take a look at all the latest tv & film news, including renewals & cancellations. We give you our recommendations for upcoming TV in the next 7 days.
