4/12/24 - The Port of authority in NYC wants the NY Marathon organizers to pay a fee for crossing the bridge, OJ Simpson dies after his battle with cancer, an elderly woman shows what "stand your ground" is about when she fatally shoots a home invasion suspect, and Disney argues the firing of “The Mandalorian's" Gina Carano is fair use of its 1st Amendment Rights. For the 7th installment of the Runners Who Read Podcast, Olivia sat down with Deena Kastor, the NY Times bestselling author of Let Your Mind Run. Deena is an Olympic distance runner, coach, commentator, and author. Throughout her illustrious pro racing career, she has won 24 national championships and represented the United States on 19 national teams, including 3 Olympic teams. At the 2004 Games in Athens, she won a bronze medal in the marathon and then went on to win the 2005 Chicago and 2006 London major marathons. She has held American records in every distance from 5k to marathon and currently holds the master's American record in the marathon having run 2:27.47 in 2015. As an author, alongside co-writer Michelle Hamilton, her memoir, Let Your Mind Run won the American Society of Journalists and Authors' award for Outstanding Memoir/Autobiography book in 2019. She is currently still racing, coaching for Mammoth Track Club and, commentating as she did just last weekend at the NY Marathon. In this live recorded book club discussion, we talk about both the mental and physical benefits of cultivating positivity in your life, bouncing back from disappointment like she did after the 2008 Olympic Games, and whether she will consider competing at the 2024 Olympic trials among other topics from her book and audience questions.
A one-on-one abbreviated pod today. Our guest had some technical issues, so we had to pivot to a small but mighty episode where we talk about dog walking in the rain, Chris went to see The 1975 live at Madison Square Garden, where Matty, the singer, eats raw meat on stage, $25 plastic cup cocktails, the LA elite are loving Rick Caruso, Katy Perry Votey, we've given up on politics, but we haven't given up on cinema, Chris made sure to create his Mastadon account just in case, why are spectators crying at the NY Marathon, and how are content creators taking advantage of this epic foot race. twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/howlonggone/support

Rick comes in a close second. Nayte is SO in his feels that he bites a piece of his lip off just to try not to cry. NY Marathon Tips & What's in a Name?

He's back and better than ever at Badwater 135. Two years ago, Purple Patch athlete, Timothy Deer, completed his first Badwater 135 Ultra in just over 36 hours. This year, at age 56 and in some of the hottest historical race conditions, Deer finished again...faster, stronger, and healthier than ever. In fact, he was 11th overall, the first athlete 50+, and four hours faster than in 2019. The Badwater 135 is billed as the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet because it takes athletes from Badwater Basin, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in North America at 280' below sea level, all the way to the Whitney Portal at 8,300', the highest point in the contiguous United States. Tim chats with his coach, Matt Dixon, about his goals for this year, his purpose, and his non-traditional race preparation for this arduous event. This episode is a masterclass on how to approach training with purpose in a time-starved life. Tim: Outlines a typical training week and, trust us, the schedule will surprise you Describes strategies and tactics he uses to avoid injury and burnout Stresses the importance of habit formation and organizational skills Emphasizes how strength training became his secret weapon and when it paid dividends during the course of the race Breaks down his race mile-by-mile including his pacing, nutrition, and shoe change strategy from start to finish Shares advice for older athletes and those who are afraid to set big, hairy, audacious goals Ultimately, says Tim, "Get a schedule every day of your life that you can have fun, do things at work that make you proud, get your workouts in, and still get some rest. When you do, it becomes a habit." Next up for Tim? The Leadville Trail 100 Run in August, IRONMAN World Championships in October, and the NY Marathon in November! Dare we say that he's just getting started? Cheers to living with purpose and passion! We heard Neil say” This whole process scares the crap out of me” but he is starting to build new habits. The next collaboration takes listeners behind the scenes with Kurt Stockbridge, lead product developer for Skechers Performance, and superstar runner, Meb Keflezighi as they reveal the process it took to create a pair of shoes in less than eight weeks that Meb would wear for the NY Marathon. It’s a powerful example of how a product developer and elite athlete work together to create a special shoe and then how this effort translates to shoes that later become available to the general running public. We then sat down with Ken Sung, co-owner of Gazelle Sports in Central Michigan. Ken discussed how Gazelle used this time during the pandemic to take a step back and look closely at its business and then make the needed changes to get ready for the next three to five years. Ken then went on to talk about his entrepreneurial efforts that include both a farm to table full-service restaurant and a brand-new Gourmet Bagel Shop. Neil is still waiting for the dozen bagels Ken promised him.We closed the show with the Run to the Finish Segment as Amanda as Mark Sullivan debunk the common myths associated with running.
My sister joins me as we debate whether Mamma Mia 1 or Mamma Mia 2 is a better film and then we're joined by Elana Lantry who from San Diego, to the cold winters of Michigan, and then to New York City where she lives in an amazing Brooklyn townhouse now, she has circulated all over the US to pursue her love of theatre administration. Currently in Development in the New York office of a prominent London theatre company, she’s still working during COVID to find funding for the arts. Last year she ran the NY Marathon, her first marathon in record time and she loves all things Mamma Mia, National Treasure, The Bachelor, and pug related.
You've seen the photo of Kathrine Switzer being accosted at the Boston Marathon course because "women were not allowed." Listen to this running pioneer discuss everything from winning the first women's NY Marathon to starting 261 Fearless, the global network that encourages women to get out there and run. Learn more about 261 Fearless, click here. Fundy and Nicholas loved the conversation and we are sure you will too. Share with all your friends. The more we all get out there and put in the miles, the better off the world is going to be.
Photo AP Running The New York Marathon The New York City Marathon (branded TCS New York City Marathon and formerly branded ING New York City Marathon for sponsorshipreasons) is an annual marathon (42.195 km or 26.219 miles) that courses through the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the world, with 50,304 finishers in 2013. Along with the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon, it is among the pre-eminent long-distance annual running events in the United States and is one of the World Marathon Majors. The race is organized by New York Road Runners Club and has been run every year since 1970, with the exception of 2012, due to landfall of Hurricane Sandy. In past years, it has been sponsored by the financial group ING. In 2014, Tata Consultancy Services, a multinationalinformation technology (IT) service, consulting, and business solutions company headquartered in India, began an eight-year term as the title sponsor. It is held on the first Sunday of November and attracts professional competitors and amateurs from all over the world. Because of the popularity of the race, participation is chosen largely by a lottery system. Runners who are members of NYRR can gain entry by meeting the qualifications for guaranteed entry or via nomination from an official running club. Olivier ran the NY Marathon with his running mate Pierre - listen to him speak to Susan about his experiences in Running The New York Marathon. For more on the NYC Marathon have a look here.

EP - 38 In this episode, you’ll learn about a few the hosts favorite podcasts of 2019 and the value they can bring to you as an insurance agent. FAVORITE PODCASTS BUSINESS AND INSPIRATION BRIAN BUFFINI - I’ve been a fan of Buffini for a long time. It’s the one podcast I look forward to every week...It plays every Tuesday morning. His methodology is so simple. His podcast is usually very inspiring and he has some great guests. While his message is primarily focused on the real estate industry, his ideas will also work in the insurance industry. Brian does throw in a little bit about is coaching business, and that turns some people off. I ignore that part and love the ideas he shares. For those of you that work in personal lines and do a lot around homeowners ….his podcast will provide some insight into the real estate business which can help you with your conversations with your referral partners.Occassionally he talks about the state of the real estate market which I think is helpful for those in our industry. MARKETING BUILD A BETTER AGENCY - Hosted by Drew McLellan and mentioned in episode 37. While this podcast is focused on marketing agencies, so many of the concepts discussed work for business owners. He’s talking about real issues that business owners need to think about. You’ll get some ideas herer for your business with some marketing ideas mixed in! DUCT TAPE MARKETING - John Jantsch - something you might not know about me is for the last 10 years, I was a part of Duct Tape Marketing. I found out about the organization when he released his book The Referral Engine. Since I was in the referral training business, I thought I’d get some good systems for teaching people about referrals. When I joined in 2009, the internet was exploding. Creating content was essential. So instead of absorbing referral strategies, I started building websites, creating email campaigns, doing social media posts. After a few years, I started to realize that I didn’t like doing any of that. I went on a speaking spree for a year before my caregiving role kicked in. I’m no longer part of the network, but I’m a big fan of John and Duct Tape Marketing. One of the things he would talk about from the beginning was creating a podcast. It seemed overwhelming to me at the time considering I was learning so many other things. In retrospect, I wish I’d focused on the podcast and stayed away from websites and the other marketing tactics I was offering. I think podcasting is the best sales tool out there. It’s a great platform ...hence I have 4! This podcast is one of the older ones and many people model their podcast off of Duct Tape Marketing! SPONSORED BY PODCAST, INC WHEN: May 1, 2020 WHERE: Washington, DC. If you have a larger company, let’s say more than 50 employees, how are you communicating with staff. As the company grows, it’s easy to loose the small business feel where everyone knows the owner of the company and gets to talk to them. This conference is about creating podcasts for internal communication. Getting the CEO, the HR department, the Marketing department and other department heads to talk to the rest of the employees. Often times these conversations happen at annual meetings or quarterly roundtables, but everyone is vying for time, and can’t always deliver the deep messages they want. We are bringing together companies that want to create podcasts for internal communication and talking about best practices. We are talking about creating a podcast that only your employees will hear…..not the outside world This is a conference where someone from HR, Marketing and specifically communications and IT need to attend! If you have an agency with multiple locations, are part of an insurance company or a vendor in this space, we’d love to see you there if it makes sense for your company. Go to podcastinc.com to get additional details. This isn’t just for the insurance industry, there will be other industries in attendance such as banks, non profits and government agencies. We will have limited seating, so if you think this will make sense for you, don’t wait too long to register. PODCASTS ABOUT PODCASTING If you are into podcasting or want to learn more about podcasting, I have 3 podcasts to recommend. I’ll keep this brief since many of you might not be interested in podcasting. But I am and listen to a lot of podcasts on the subject. NEW MEDIA SHOW - Todd Cochrane and Rob Greenlee - Both of these two are icons in the podcasting space. They’ve had this show for almost 10 years. If you are interested in the industry, it’s the one to pay attention to. SCHOOL OF PODCASTING - Dave Jackson - Dave has also been podcasting for a long time. He’s teaching people how to podcast. He’s in it every week. If you think you want to start a podcast, check out his show and his program. He’s good! Podcasting is his gig. THE FEED - this podcast is co-hosted with Rob Walch and Elsie Escobar, both podcast hall of famers. It’s the marketing arm for Libsyn which is a podcast hosting company. I have three of my podcasts on this platform and one of them on Blubrry which is Todd Cochranes company. They talk about issues around podcasting and around LIbsyn. Always good stuff. CRIME When I was training for the NY Marathon in 2018 year, I listened to a lot of crime podcasts. I’m a slow runner so I spent a lot of time training and listened to a lot podcasts. My major in college was law enforcement, so I’m often intrigued by crime stories, but I don’t listen to them too consistently. One of my favorites is Up and Vanished, the first season but the second season didn’t keep my attention. This is a true story and they found the criminal as a result of the podcast, so don’t google this one…..just start from episode 1 season one. I also listen to Crime Junkie and will pop on Small Town Dicks every once in awhile. INSURANCE I have my share of insurance podcasts that I listen to but some of them just turn my stomach…..so macho, old boy network that I struggle with them. The content is usually good, but I can’t handle the locker room ego crap….so I’ll let you find the insurance podcasts you like! If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m about diversity, inclusion and I feel very strongly about supporting and promoting women. Insurance is a male dominated profession for some reason and someone needs to stand up for women in this industry. When I look at conferences being planned, the first thing I look for is how many women speakers there are….and their titles. If there aren’t any women or diversity on the speaker list, I call out the conference planner. I’m doing my small part and I hope some of my younger peers will do the same in promoting women. To those of you in the insurance space creating podcasts and promoting women in the industry, I salute you! I listen to them, I pay attention. Don’t make them the token episodes, make sure you have a balance of women and diversity on your episodes. If you didn’t know this, I have a few other podcasts that I produce. One of them is Divorce Exposed. Insights for staying married, inspiration for surviving divorce. It’s a passion project for me and if you listen to episode one of this podcast, you’ll get a good idea of my background. Another podcast is Business In Real Life. This one started out promoting my clients. It’s been like pulling teeth to get my clients to agree to a podcast interview, so it’s evolved into ideas about running a business. I now use it as a tool to promote my business groups. Its the first podcast I started and it will probably be benched the first as I focus on this one, and the other two. My most recent podcast is Seniors We Love. Since I’m back in the insurance business, focusing on medicare insurance options, I’m using it as a tool to market my new agency. I want to talk about seniors who deserved to be remembered. Eventually I want to turn some of the episodes into a book that can be handed down families so their loved ones aren’t forgotten in the event that digital goes away! If you listened to episode 37 where I talked about year end planning, my own planning is focused on these podcasts and growing my new agency. Let’s see how I practice what I preach! I’d love to know your favorite episodes. Go to the Business of insurance FB page and leave a note about the podcasts you enjoy! Let me know what you like about it as well! Until next time, keep creating opportunities. YOUR HOST: Debbie DeChambeau, CIC, AAI, CPIA - an entrepreneurer, business advisor, insurance professional and content creator. With the Bank of America Chicago Marathon since 1990, Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski has been a key player in building the marathon's dynamic relationships with the city of Chicago, the corporate community and local neighborhoods along the marathon course. In 2006, Pinkowski also became one of the original architects of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a series set to recognize and challenge the world's top adventurous marathon runners. He also shares a bit about the changing culture of marathons and the culture of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, and where he sees it headed in the future. The Marine Corps Marathon Deputy Director Angela Anderson has been with MCM since 1994. She oversees the various branches within the MCM organization and develops new projects to enhance the event experience. After receiving a lot of criticism and little to no support when launching her bakery, Elizabeth Ellison identified a gap when it came to supporting entrepreneurs in the community. In a world where technology and high growth ventures tend to dominate the conversation, Elizabeth wanted to create a better environment for traditionally overlooked entrepreneurs - food entrepreneurs. Through her Family’s Foundation, she’s created several programs to support all types of entrepreneurs in Tulsa. Most recently she celebrated the launch of Mother Road Market, Tulsa’s first food hall where she houses 21 food entrepreneurs. But for someone who’s ran the NY Marathon, climbed the Colorado 14er, hiked the Inca Trail and completed the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon for fun, just helping entrepreneurs is not enough. Following her passion for criminal justice and leveraging her vast network in San Francisco, she helped manufacture a strategic partnership between The Last Mile, the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation, other philanthropists and government agencies to create a better pathway for incarcerated women in Oklahoma by teaching them how to code. Elizabeth describes herself as a mom to two boys (three if you count her husband Chris), Personal Assistant to two dogs, a runner and a terrible tennis player. Join us as she shares her passion for entrepreneurs, the struggles she’s had to overcome, and how she makes commuting between San Francisco and Tulsa work.
When asked how he trained by running 135–150 miles per week, two-times NY Marathon winner Tom Fleming said, “Most days I didn’t feel like running until I started running.”
Brian Finkelstein discusses what goes on inside his "How to Hate Yourself" voice. Even though he ran the NY Marathon, has 2 Emmy noms and seems to win every Moth Slam, it somehow persists. INCLUDED is a clip from a recent LIVE "How to Hate Yourself" show at the Hollywood Improv where he explains why he hates LA. He's very wise and I go so far as to compare his tweets to Pema Chodron quotes, to mixed results. Enjoy! You'll never feel sad again.

Annya Santana, who grew up in the Bronx and was born in the Dominican Republic, bought a one way ticket to Paris 4 years ago after heartbreak and started her clean beauty line Menos Mas (which means Less is More). Before finding herself in Paris, we talk about her experience growing up in NY and working in the early days of streetwear after finding herself in fashion PR. She explains that Paris is surprisingly afro-centric and we discuss the benefits of letting the day unfold — the Parisian way. We get into the moment the Bronx seems to be having (from Cardi B, to the Bodega Boys) and how people of color are now taking ownership for their contributions to culture.Annya is majorly into health and fitness — an awakening that happened over time. She tells me about how she changed her entire approach to eating (first to clear her skin) but then realized how much better she felt after eating clean. In addition to fixing her skin issues, her cleanse eased the pain of menstrual cramps. We also get into: running the NY Marathon, wellness for free, creating her dual-gender, all-natural skincare, her Mom’s DIY remedies inspiring her, making hand cream for her Dad, acne scarring, changing your face via FaceTune, stretch marks, moisturizing as meditation, hormones, acupuncture, Dominican salons and embracing her natural hair texture, the body pos movement and its implications & much more!Products/Things Mentioned:Annya’s amazing line Menos Mas: https://www.menos-mas.com/The China Project — the book that opened Annya’s eyes to the dangers of processed foods:https://nutritionstudies.org/the-china-study/Superfood Probiotic Powders - she put a scoop of this in her water every day & treated her acne in a monthhttps://www.orgain.com/protein/organic-nutrition-powder/Organic-Superfoods-Powder.htmlVitamin E oil - also used to naturally heal her acnePink Cream from Dr. Jart Annya uses as Essencehttps://www.sephora.com/brand/dr-jartMy essence from Tatcha - I actually really like this producthttps://www.sephora.com/product/the-essence-plumping-skin-softener-P415771?icid2=products%20grid:p415771:productRoyal Jelly Menos Mas for scarringhttps://www.menos-mas.com/shop/honey-royal-jelly-miracle-body-butterLearn more about microblading:https://www.elle.com/uk/beauty/a31566/microblading-eyebrows/Where I got my Miicroblading done in NY (highly recommend):http://nylasheyeland.com/Bantu Knot Out how I sleep with my natural hairhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulqtwgglHc8Pineapple Method how Annya sleeps with her natural hairhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS_qO6zMgu8Ashley Graham Weight Loss Backlash
Jared Ward is a Dad, a Husband, Olympian, runner, and coach. In that order. Our interview is wide ranging from running form and which shoes can best support your body’s preferred running style, injuries he has worked to overcome, and how to prepare for and run well in the heat, from both a physical and mental perspective. The real gems in this interview are all the mental preparation tips we cover. If you want to learn some tips for focusing on the mental skills you need to succeed, this interview provides you tools you can implement into your running and racing strategy no matter what your overall pace might be. Today’s Guest Jared Ward is a runner, Coach, and a dad, husband and Mormon. He was born in Utah and went to Brigham Young University where he got a degree in Statistics. He is a 6x NCAA All-American, and a 2016 Olympic Marathoner, finishing 6th overall and running his personal best time at 2:11:30. He teaches Statistics at Brigham Young University. What you will learn about: How Jared has explored biomechanics from the standpoint of the statistical side of the research How you can work and perform though injury but doing so can set you back longer than being proactive and dealing with it up front with physical therapy and rest. You can’t fake it through a marathon. Whether Jared felt the Boston conditions might have been the type of day when he could have performed well (in hindsight of course) In warm weather marathons it pays to be a bit cautious at the start of a long race to ensure you have energy at the end, taking extra water early on, slowing slightly can go a long way to helping you finish strong. Performance starts to suffer when you lose 2-4% of your body weight in fluids, which is increasingly an issue if you are a middle of the pack runner and are out there longer. Hot weather tips: wearing a hat and sunglasses, carrying ice in your hands, or pour water over your head. Studies have shown that increasing your blood plasma by training for at least 10 days can help your body increase the plasma (and fluid storage) capability in your body. How you focus during a race is important. You should have a broad focus at the start on how you feel and what is going on around you. But as you get to the end of a marathon you want to be focused narrowly on your strategy, how your competitors are faring, vs how you are feeling, because you are not going to feel good so need to take your focus elsewhere. We need to have a list of positive things that can help keep us focused. As part of his academic research he learned that Boston Qualifiers were running the start of the race more conservatively and closer to their average pace overall than those who didn’t qualify, and were also better at reading and taking advantage of the terrain of the course. Keeping a training log of how your training has gone gives you the data you need to determine about what pace you are ready for so that you don’t overshoot your pace because taper has made you feel so well rested. Start with a can do mindset rather than a “have to” mindset, it will help reduce your anxiety. It will help you to run the pace you are prepared to run. You can only run the best race and the best effort you have. If you do that it is liberating. How Jared manages the balance of family and career with his running. Setting your priorities for the day and then focusing your energy and schedule on those things lets you get done what is most important. If you remove the things that just pass the time and focus on what is truly important it is amazing what you can accomplish. Jared’s focus next is on the NY Marathon in the fall and is excited for preparing for that race and some half marathons in Europe as tune up races. Inspirational Quotes: If you can harness the power of your mind, it is amazing what your body can do. Your mind has a focus limit as well, saving some of the mental gas tank is critical. You have to trust your training and the system you have followed. Then run your best and let the rest happen. Allie Kieffer stormed back onto the running scene by coming in as the second US woman, and fifth overall, in the 2017 NY Marathon with a 15 minute personal best. She became a runner for Oiselle early this year and selected them because of the focus on women and community. Allie ran in college for Wake Forest, made the 2012 10k Olympic Trials but retired in 2013 after injury. Because of her love of running she self-coached her way back, which is amazing it its own right. Allie and I cover a wide range of subjects: how she focused on what effort she felt she could sustain in order to smash 15 minutes off her personal best to take everyone by surprise in that 2017 marathon, her advocacy for positive body image and setting a goal of good healthy living and balance in her life and what she is currently doing to heal a stress fracture in her foot. Allie and I cover whether you should strive for a race weight and what that could mean for your performance overall and your ability to give your body what it needs to perform at it. What you will learn about How Allie took 15 min off her PR in the 2017 NYC Marathon, finishing in 5th place and the second American woman How your race should be about the effort you can sustain, how you are feeling, and not any end result How weight training and having more muscle has made her a better runnerHow Allie ran a 2016 marathon on a 200 meter indoor track (211 laps) as the only woman and set a new world record To be healthy, eat mostly vegetables, whole foods, and don’t eat too much. Be sure to get regular exercise. Don’t have to say no to anything. If you are under-eating to get to a “race weight” it is likely not healthy for you. How would you know what an ideal race weight might be anyway? Some runners are being told they are too small, some too big. You have to figure out what your body needs and listen to it. How she came to be an advocate/spokesperson for positive body image and taking ownership of yourself and doing what is right and healthy for you How she is dealing with a stress fracture in the second metatarsal of her foot causing her to have to drop out of the NYC Half and London Marathon. How she has been using cross training on an elliptical (and ElliptiGO) and pool running to stay in condition. Inspirational Quotes: Don’t box yourself in by putting limits on what you think you are capable of. Set yourself up for success, not failure. If you can’t eat out at a restaurant or have anxiety about it, you are not being healthy. Outside of writing for "The Simpsons", he's also the author of the best-selling book "How to Lose a Marathon" — a hilarious retelling of Joel's training for and running the NY Marathon. In this episode, we discuss: 2013 NYC Marathon…the documentation Getting off the couch (an idiots guide) Post-Marathon contemplation…what just happened? How to keep going? Inspirations Self Reflection, what did I learn about this process? How to prepare for the marathon. What is the next challenge? Time travel and sculling and coxswains (pronounced cock son!) Mary Wittenberg & Virgin Sport - Social Movement As CEO of the New York Road Runners from 2005 to 2015, and having been involved with them since 1998, Mary Wittenberg helped the NY Marathon grow to include 400,000 participants, including 120,000 school children across multiple events and helped found the World Marathon Majors which connected the marathons in Boston, Berlin, London, Chicago and New York. Since stepping down from NYRR, Mary is now Global CEO of Virgin Sport and together with Richard Branson, she is re-inventing group athleticism to encourage as many people as possible to experience social running. Virgin Sport has four weekend multi-events on the calendar with more to follow. And you know if Richard Branson is involved, these fitness festivals will truly be special. In this episode Mary tells us about the philosophy behind Virgin Sport and how they are engaging athletes of all levels. She also goes into detail about the events currently on the calendar as well as what the future of Virgin Sport looks like. She shares her experiences of running, both as an athlete and as a race organizer and group leader. Her passion for running and fitness shine through in this conversation. She is an inspiration and we are all very lucky to have her join us on Run To The Top. Here are some of the topics we’ll discuss today: How Mary’s rowing team led to her becoming a runner What Mary did as CEO of NYRR and how the youth program grew under her leadership What it was like to run the NYM after being the CEO. Why she believes running is for just about everyone, especially kids The current and future vision of Virgin Sport Questions Mary is asked: 3:14 What is your background as a runner? 4:40 How much has competitive running changed since you were a more serious athlete? 6:13 Had it been an available option would you have continued post-collegiate running? 6:57 Do you still run now? 8:22 What was it like to run the New York Marathon after having been the director for so long? 11:53 What did being the CEO of New York Road Runners entail? 15:33 Why did you feel it was so important to build it at a youth level vs. focusing on adults? 17:20 Of the 50+ NYRR events, which is your favorite? 18:10 What about being the first female marathon race director? 19:29 Why do you think it’s important to have other events outside of traditional marathons for people to choose from and do you think other cities will adopt these, too 21:31 What about your current job as CEO of Virgin Sport? 23:33 What can you tell us about these initial four festivals you have scheduled? 26:08 Can people pick and choose which events they want to do, can they do all of them? 27:18 How do potential future events look for Virgin Sport beyond these first four cities? 28:43 How could someone get involved in these events? 30:03 What is it about running that makes you want to share it with as many people as possible? 31:56 Where you would like Virgin Sport to be in 10 years? 33:07 What can more recreational runners do in their own world to inspire others? 34:57 What do you think about Park Run? 38:09 The Final Kick Round Quotes by Mary: I think there’s many more opportunities today for young runners and athletes in other sports that switch to running to find a post-collegiate running group and run pretty seriously. You realize as time goes on that there are still roadblocks to women in leadership. If you fit running and some high intensity running into your life, it may be the best way for you to get healthy and fit. It’s not just about the marathon. I have always had this burning desire to take the model of community based running and fitness on the road. We’re in the experience business. Our Proposition is based on bringing people together. For us, the challenger in the industry is not other people putting on events, because from a mission of purpose that’s awesome they’re doing that. Our challenge is the things that stop people; the comfortable bed, the super-busy workday. Just by getting out the door every day, you inspire people. When people see people running, other people realize: ‘Oh. maybe I can do that, too.’ Mentioned in this podcast: Virgin Sport Homepage NY Road Runners The New York City Marathon Park Run Book: A Race Like No Other; Liz Robbins Book: Once a Runner; John L.
