From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast    Today is Tuesday, September 3rd and Happy Birthday to Charlie Sheen   I'm Peyton Spurlock and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Woodstock Mayor Shares Parking Deck Update. What We Know Superintendent: Cherokee School Board to Unveil Core Beliefs and Goals Cherokee County Approves Highway 20 East Overlay Standards Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath to discussing Kombucha   We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    Commercial: CU of GA   STORY 1:   Woodstock Mayor Shares Parking Deck Update. What We Know Downtown Woodstock's new parking deck is set to open in early 2025, according to Mayor Michael Caldwell. The six-level deck, which will provide 633 free parking spaces, is expected to be topped off by September 16 and completed by the end of December. It is part of the larger Woodstock City Center project, which will feature office spaces, retail, restaurants, and a boutique hotel. Caldwell emphasized that the parking will be free, addressing community concerns about costs. Winter Construction is handling the public infrastructure, including the parking deck. STORY 2:  Superintendent: Cherokee School Board to Unveil Core Beliefs and Goals Cherokee County Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis announced that the school board will unveil core beliefs and new reading and English language arts goals at the Sept. 12 meeting. These goals are part of a broader plan to elevate the district's performance, aiming to become the highest-performing district in Georgia. Davis highlighted a recent achievement where 70.3% of third graders were reading at or above grade level, though she noted room for improvement compared to other districts. The new Cherokee High School campus construction is on track and under budget. Additionally, the district has implemented a stricter cell phone policy to foster personal interaction among students. STORY 3:  Cherokee County Approves Highway 20 East Overlay Standards Cherokee County officials have introduced the Highway 20 East Overlay District to set design and architectural standards for new development along Highway 20 from Canton Marketplace to the Forsyth County line. This overlay aims to ensure that as the highway expands, development remains aesthetically pleasing and avoids a cluttered commercial appearance. The district, which covers a mix of residential and commercial land, includes requirements for landscaping, open space, pedestrian access, and architectural features. The goal is to preserve community character while accommodating growth. The overlay will apply to new developments and major changes in the area, with standards for building materials, height, and design.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    Back in a moment  Break:  DRAKE   STORY 4:  Habitat for Humanity Holds ‘First Nail Ceremony' for Canton Home Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia recently celebrated the start of a new home build in Canton with a “first nail ceremony.” The project, known as a Habitat Women Build, is funded largely by women volunteers and supported by corporate sponsor EIS, which contributed $80,000 and volunteers. Homebuyer Jada Parks, who learned about Habitat from a cousin, expressed her gratitude and hopes to give back to her community. This build is part of a larger initiative to construct three new homes in Canton. Volunteers wrote messages of encouragement on the home's walls, symbolizing community support and hope. STORY 5:   Cherokee Follows Record-Breaking Performance with Lambert Cherokee's Week 4 opponent, Lambert, presents a tough challenge despite their 0-2 record. The Longhorns have faced top teams Mill Creek and Walton, with Walton being a recent Class 7A runner-up and Mill Creek the 2022 state champion. Cherokee coach Adam Holley warns that Lambert's record is misleading and the game will be a tough test. The Warriors, coming off a record-setting 65-42 win over Pope, are led by quarterback Tanner Savasir, who's had a standout season. With high offensive production and a strong core of experienced players, Cherokee is poised for a competitive game against Lambert before starting their region play. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Feb 23rd Publish Date:  Feb 22nd   From the Drake Realty Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.   Today is Friday, February 23rd, and Happy 81st Birthday to NFL HOF Fred Biletnikoff. ***02.23.24 – BIRTHDAY – FRED BILETNIKOFF*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. S. Supreme Court Rules Cobb Man Cannot Be Retried for 2012 Killing Uncertainty Surrounds Cobb Commission's District Map: An Update on the Situation Initial Hearing to Begin in City of Mableton Lawsuit Challenge   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: CUofGA STORY 1: U.S. Supreme Court Rules Cobb Man Cannot Be Retried for 2012 Killing In a landmark ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned a Georgia Supreme Court opinion, ruling that Damian McElrath, who was tried for the 2012 stabbing death of his mother, cannot be retried for malice murder. McElrath, diagnosed with schizophrenia, stabbed his mother over 50 times in their west Cobb home, believing she was trying to poison him. He was found guilty, but mentally ill, of felony murder and not guilty by reason of insanity of malice murder. However, in 2020, the Georgia Supreme Court dismissed both verdicts. The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling asserts that the jury's verdict constituted an acquittal for malice murder, thus protecting McElrath from retrial under double jeopardy standards. This decision emphasizes that "an acquittal is an acquittal" regardless of its consistency with other verdicts. This ruling marks a significant moment for McElrath's defense team, who expressed their honor in representing "the forgotten mentally ill who get into serious trouble." STORY 2: Uncertainty Surrounds Cobb Commission's District Map: An Update on the Situation The future of the Cobb Board of Commissioners District 2 seat, currently occupied by Jerica Richardson, hangs in the balance due to an ongoing legal dispute surrounding redistricting. The validity of the county's self-drawn district map is under scrutiny, with a decision from the Georgia Supreme Court eagerly anticipated. If the court confirms the General Assembly's alternate map, which doesn't include Richardson's residence in District 2, her position could be jeopardized. The situation is further complicated by contradictory legislation regarding her seat and Richardson's refusal to step down. This may necessitate a special election, causing further disruption to the commission's operations and leaving residents uncertain about their representation. Amidst this uncertainty, Richardson has announced her run for the U.S. House of Representatives, attracting several candidates for her potentially vacant commission seat. STORY 3: Initial Hearings to Begin in City of Mableton Lawsuit Challenge The city of Mableton, Georgia, is facing a legal challenge that questions the constitutionality of its creation. The lawsuit, brought forward by five residents, will have its first hearing in Cobb Superior Court on March 6. The plaintiffs argue that House Bill 839, which allowed for Mableton's establishment and was passed by the Georgia General Assembly in 2022, is unconstitutional. They claim the bill violates the state constitution's single subject rule by creating both the city and community improvement districts in a single act. The suit seeks a declaratory judgment ruling that HB 839, and thus, the city, is void. Despite the ongoing legal battle, Mableton's Mayor, Michael Owens, stated that the city would continue with its operations and work on establishing commissions, authorities, and boards to assist in city development. Standout player Abbey Bensman led the Greyhounds to victory with an impressive 18 points and seven rebounds. "Abbey is a special player," praised Pope coach Bill Blythe. "She does just about everything out on that court." The game saw Pope leading 32-29 in the third quarter. However, a successful 7-0 run gave them a comfortable lead going into the final quarter. Despite Etowah's best efforts, Pope managed to maintain control and secure the win. Sarah Gentry also made significant contributions, scoring nine points and six rebounds, including a crucial 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter, which put the Greyhounds ahead. The win propels the Greyhounds into Round 2 where they will host South Paulding on Saturday. STORY 5: Over $22K Donation for Literacy Made at Marietta Town Hall Meeting A significant donation of over $22K was recently made to promote literacy at a town hall meeting in Marietta. The meeting, hosted by Ward 5 Marietta City Councilman M. Carlyle Kent, saw Cobb Collaborative Executive Director Irene Barton receive a check for $22,100. This contribution will be utilized for two early literacy projects. $20,000 will assist Zion Academy in constructing a playground designed around an early literacy theme. The remaining $2,100 will fund 25 ‘Marietta Reads' packets per month for a year, intended to benefit pre-K age children throughout Councilman Kent's ward. We'll be back in a moment.   Break: DRAKE STORY 6: McEachern reaches century mark in win over Westlake McEachern High School's basketball team achieved a stunning victory over Westlake, ending with an impressive 105-72 score in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs. Ace Bailey led the charge, scoring a game-high 32 points, with 24 of those earned in the first half alone. This win marks the first time McEachern has reached the century mark since the 2019-20 season. The team now looks ahead to their next challenge against Newton on Saturday. Despite the victory, Coach Tremayne Anchrum insists there's still room for improvement as they progress in the playoffs.  Break: INGLES 4 Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. The lineup includes bands such as 293 Band, The GlowBand- an Ealges tribute, Run Katie Run, Brotherhood-a Doobie Brothers tribute, and Emerald Empire Band. Two high school basketball teams from Cobb County finished in the top 25 of the final national polls. Wheeler, the Class 7A state champion, ranked 24th in ESPN's final top 25. Kell, the Class 5A state champion, ranked 20th in USA Today's poll. Wheeler went 27-7 and defeated opponents by an average of 14 points. Kell went 28-2 and won their games by an average of 34 points in the final 15 games of the season. Both teams played a national schedule and won their state championships, while featuring rosters full of future college stars. Kennesaw State has found their new basketball coach, and he's coming from an SEC power.   The five newest graduates of the Cobb County Drug Treatment Court were recently celebrated by judges, elected officials, community members, court staff, attorneys, family members, and friends. The program, which lasts 18-24 months, provides an alternative to incarceration for individuals with substance use disorders. The program combines close supervision, evidence-based treatment, and recovery support to teach offenders to be productive members of the community. The graduates shared their success stories and expressed hope and excitement for their future. The program is presided over by Superior Court Judge Kimberly A. Childs, and attended by other elected officials, including the District Attorney, Commissioner, and Clerk of Superior Court. The Harrison girls' soccer team won their eighth straight game with a 4-0 victory over South Gwinnett in the Class AAAAAAAA state playoffs. Caroline Shaw had a goal and an assist, and Addie Watt, Courtney Cangialosi, and Sydney Snow all scored. In other Cobb County action, Walton won 3-0 against West Forsyth, Kennesaw Mountain lost 3-0 to Denmark, and Brookwood beat Hillgrove 1-0. Harrison (13-3-1) will face the winner of Camden County and East Coweta in Round 2 on Monday, and Walton will host the winner of Meadowcreek and Buford on Monday. A Duluth High School student is facing criminal charges after they used a knife to cut a classmate during a fight shortly before classes began last Thursday, according to the school's principal. Duluth Principal Eric Davidson told parents in a letter on social media that the students got into a fight outside the cafeteria shortly before first period. One of the students pulled out a knife during the fight and inflicted what Davidson called a "superficial wound" on the other student. Duluth's school resource officers and several administrators were nearby when the incident occurred and quickly worked to the break the fight up, according to the principal. Both students are expected to face disciplinary consequences for fighting, but the student who was carrying the knife is also expected to face criminal charges since they were carrying a weapon on campus. In a follow up message to parents, Davidson said, all students involved in the incident, even those students who were only marginally involved, were suspended. The fight is the latest incident involving a weapon at a Gwinnett County school year, however. In October, a Grayson High School student was cut with a box cutter during a fight in a school bathroom, days after a Norcross High School student died after he was shot near campus during school hours. Around the same time, a Shiloh High School was arrested after he fire a gun on campus shortly after classes dismissed for the day. Critics of a new discipline policy that was put in place for Gwinnett County Public Schools last summer have pointed to the incidents, as well as others including increased numbers of fights, saying they are evidence that the district's new discipline approach is not working. In November, Gwinnett County Public Schools officials said the number of incidents involving guns between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31 had more than doubled compared to the same time period during the 2021 2022 school year, going from two incidents to five incidents. The number of incidents involving a blade or a razor had also increased, going from seven between August and October 2021 to 11 incidents between August and October of 2022. Collins Hill legend Maya Moore officially retired from the WNBA on Monday, making the announcement on "Good Morning America." Moore hasn't played in the WNBA since 2018, when she announced plans to commit time to criminal justice reform. Moore entered the WNBA in 2011 as the No. 1 pick of the Minnesota Lynx on the heels of leading UConn to the national title. She captured the Rookie of the Year award and the first of four WNBA titles (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017). Minnesota appeared in the playoffs eight consecutive seasons with Moore on the roster. An All-WNBA pick five consecutive seasons, Moore was league MVP in 2014 and a six-time All-Star with three All-Star MVP awards. At the high school level, Moore led Collins Hill to state championships her final three seasons and a national championship as a senior. As part of her commitment to criminal justice reform, Moore lobbied for the release of Jonathan Irons from the Jefferson City correctional center in Missouri. After 23 1/2 years behind bars, Irons was vindicated of a conviction for murder and burglary that happened when he was 16 years old. A judge set Irons free, citing a fingerprint report that would've proved Irons' innocence but was not turned over to his defense team. Moore and Irons are now married with a child, and have co-authored a book "Love and Justice." When Gwinnettians lined up to either participate in, or watch, the county's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Lawrenceville on Monday, it was the first time they've been able to do so since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The parade, which is staged by the United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County, had the theme of “Why We Can't Wait.” The parade was not held in 2021 because of the pandemic. Meanwhile, last year's parade was cancelled partially because of a surge in COVID cases, but also because King's family had asked communities to use the day to focus on getting voting rights legislation passed by Congress instead of holding parades. The parade and celebration were not be the only way Gwinnettians honored King's legacy on Monday, however. Multiple local groups held service projects, such as Volunteer Gwinnett and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Kahmare Holmes had 19 points and five rebounds Monday in the Archer boys basketball team's 50-48 win over Buckhorn Alabama in the MLK National Showcase. The Tigers, seventh in Class 7A, also got contributions from Darrian Joseph (five points, three rebounds, two assists), Elijah Davis (five points), Bryce Kennedy (three points, two rebounds), Dominick Wright (three points, six rebounds, three steals) and Courtland Walker (six points, three rebounds, three assists). Class 7A Number 1 Norcross held Thompson Alabama to 17 second-half points in a 66-51 victory Monday in the MLK National Showcase. Lamariyon Jordan scored 23 for the Blue Devils, and Samarion Bond scored 16. And Greater Atlanta Christian fell 65-49 to Drew Charter, Number 8 in Double A, in Monday's Dream Challenge. Jonathan Waters led the Spartans with 15 points and six rebounds, while Kaosi Chijioke added nine points, six rebounds and two assists. GAC's other contributors included Nick Teague (five points, nine rebounds), Amare Williams (seven points, five assists, three rebounds) and Noah Harry (seven points, four rebounds). A man was shot by a Snellville police officer early Monday morning at a local gas station after police said the department "received multiple calls of a man brandishing a firearm." Police said an officer located the suspected vehicle shortly after 4 a.m. at the Speedway gas station located at Stone Mountain Highway and Highpoint Road. Snellville police said said the suspect was taken to a local hospital and was being treated. His condition was not immediately known. The department also said the officer "sustained a minor injury during the event" and was also treated at a hospital. According to police, a gun was located at the scene. Snellville police said the GBI has been called to investigate the incident, which is standard procedure in police involved shootings. One of them leads the company that has the naming rights to the Gas South District and has been involved in the county because of that. Raphael Warnock wins heated runoff against Herschel Walker

Incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock narrowly defeated Republican Herschel Walker Tuesday in a closely fought race for Georgia's U.S. Senate seat, giving Democrats a slim two-seat majority in the upper house in Washington. Warnock was leading Walker 51.1% to 48.8% as of 11:50 p.m. Tuesday night, with 98% of precincts reporting. The Warnock victory in the final contest of the 2022 election cycle gave Democrats 51 seats in the Senate to 49 for Republicans. As of midnight, Warnock had won 59% of the vote in Cobb County, according to unofficial results, with Republican challenger Herschel Walker receiving 41%. Though Warnock won around 38,000 more votes than Walker in the November general election, neither candidate earned more than 50% of the vote required by Georgia law to prevent a runoff, pushing the nationally watched race to a December rematch. The lengthy campaign that finally concluded Tuesday night was the most expensive race of the 2022 cycle, with outside groups and the candidates' campaigns spending more than $401 million in the race, according to campaign-finance tracking group OpenSecrets   For a few seconds, the Allatoona flag football team thought it was on its way to the Class 7A state championship game at Center Parc Stadium. If not for a few extra steps, the Buccaneers would have been. With Monday's state semifinal tied 13-all with 5 seconds left to play, Allatoona quarterback Maci Strickland scrambled left, pulled up and threw deep down the middle. Receiver Aoife Flynn came down with the ball between two defenders and sprinted away for what looked to be the game-winning 65-yard touchdown. However, the celebration was short-lived as Strickland was called for being past the line of scrimmage when she let the pass go. The penalty sent the game to overtime, where the potential celebration turned to disappointment. In the second overtime, Milton found a way to finally get past Allatoona 19-13 at IBM Performance Field inside the Atlanta Falcons' training facility. Milton will face Blessed Trinity, which beat Marietta in the other semifinal, for the state championship Thursday at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta. For much of the season, Marietta's flag football team would often start slowly, rely on its defense and then pull away from opponents in the second half. It was a trend that concerned coach Nick Houstoulakis as the Blue Devils got deeper in the playoffs, and on Monday, his concerns were justified. Blessed Trinity scored two first-half touchdowns and added a third in the final minutes of the game to post a 19-0 victory over Marietta in the semifinals of the Class 7A state playoffs, also at the Falcons' IBM Performance Field. Marietta was stopped one game short of reaching back-to-back state championship games. For Blessed Trinity, it was a game of payback for the 26-0 loss the Blue Devils handed them in the same round a year ago. The City Council voted 4-2 to allocate an additional $500,000 for the building of a downtown park slated to open in spring 2023. Village Green Park will be located just south of the StillFire Brewing brewery being built in downtown Smyrna. The brewery and adjacent park are sandwiched between Atlanta Road and the Smyrna Community Center. In January, the council agreed to sell an acre of city-owned land to StillFire, which will build a two-story, 15,000-square-foot brewery there. The proceeds from that sale — $600,000 — were to fund Village Green Park. In April, the council allocated an additional $400,000 for the park from the city's federal COVID-19 relief funds, bringing the total cost to $1 million. The latest funding allocation was sourced from the city's general fund. With Monday night's vote, the cost for the park is now $1.5 million, an increase Mayor Derek Norton told the MDJ was necessary to overcome issues with grading on the property and to match finishes in other parks the city is upgrading. Council members Charles “Corkey” Welch and Susan Wilkinson voted against the measure. The two members also voted against the deal that saw the city sell land to StillFire Brewing, as well as the first set of additional funding for the park project. Welch's reason for opposing the newest infusion of funds held steady from his previous vote in April against additional funding, which is his belief the current park serves the community more as is than a brewery would.   The Battery Atlanta invites guests to welcome 2023 in style at its annual New Year's Eve Bash, presented by Xfinity, on December 31. A suspect in a deadly August shooting at a Vinings apartment complex has been taken into custody. Ambakisye Mizell, charged with the murder of Demetrius Dow, was booked into the Cobb County jail Sunday, where he is being held without bond, according to booking records. At around 4 a.m. on August 28, Cobb police responded to a call at the District at Vinings apartment complex at 2800 Paces Ferry Road reporting that someone had been shot, police said at the time. First responders treated the 40-year-old Dow for gunshot wounds, but he died at the scene. A warrant for Mizell's arrest was issued November 9. In the warrant, police allege Mizell shot Dow multiple times in the legs while robbing him. Mizell is from Albany, Georgia, according to booking records, and was transferred to Cobb from the Crisp County jail. The Cobb County Board of Education is set to review five district rule modifications at its work session Thursday afternoon. Two changes are to existing rules, concerning staff access to the district's new emergency system badges and employee transfers within the district. Three new policies deal with animals in schools, counseling programs and the Parents' Bill of Rights. The codification of the Parents' Bill of Rights in the district's administrative rules comes after Governor. Brian Kemp signed into law the bill known by the same name in April. Board Member Randy Scamihorn told the MDJ that the district is already in compliance with the state law, and will formalize it with the new policy. The rule allows parents to access their child's education records and learn more about instructional materials. It also gives parents the right to object to content “which the parent/legal guardian feels is divisive or harmful to minors” based on the district's Divisive Concepts Complaint Resolution Process, part of rules the district passed in June to fall in line with another law on divisive concepts signed by Kemp. The new rule also allows parents the right to withdraw their children from sex education courses and prohibit the district from taking photographs and making video or voice recordings of their children, so long as parents provide written notices. Revisions to the rule governing employee transfer could cause the most stir, according to Cobb County Association of Educators President Jeff Hubbard, who said the changes could make it harder for teachers to move around within the district. Hubbard noted that employees will now be required to be at their present location of employment for a two-year minimum at the time of a transfer. Other sections of the rule address “emotional support/comfort animals,” which “are not trained to perform a disability-specific task and are not Service Animals as defined by law or this rule,” and “classroom pets,” which the district says may be fish, parrots, reptiles, amphibians, hamsters and guinea pigs. The Cobb school board will meet for its work session Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at 514 Glover St. in Marietta, and its voting meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the same location.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ike Reighard, senior pastor of Piedmont Church and CEO of MUST Ministries, was named the Marietta Citizen of the Year Thursday by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Reighard was surprised with the honor at the chamber's Marietta council luncheon following Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin's State of the City address.    For the Marietta flag football team, it follows a simple premise. If the other team doesn't score, it can't win.  That was the case again Thursday night when the Blue Devils defeated North Gwinnett 13-0 in the quarterfinals of the Class 7A state playoffs. With the win, Marietta moves on to play Blessed Trinity in a rematch of last year's state semifinals, a game the Blue Devils won 26-0.  Plans for a controversial west Cobb development have been scrapped again after heated debate over the project for most of this year. Developer Pulte Homes withdrew its rezoning request for 61 homes on Midway Road near Lost Mountain Park, according to Cobb Commissioner Keli Gambrill, who represents the area. Because the proposal was taken off the agenda at least a week before the next Cobb Planning Commission hearing on Dec. 6, it is considered withdrawn without prejudice. That means Pulte can return to the county's zoning division with a new plan at any time.   A Smyrna man was arrested Saturday evening, accused by police of causing a crash at South Cobb Parkway and Spinks Drive that left another man seriously injured. Selvin De Jesus Herrera-Lopez, 31, is charged with seven misdemeanors, including DUI, open container and reckless driving, according to jail records. Marietta police say his 2021 Toyota Tacoma struck the rear of 62-year-old Christopher Okabah's Toyota Camry around 6:50 p.m. Saturday.   #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com                    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As Tumlin announced Reighard as the Citizen of the Year, the pastor shook his head in disbelief. Tumlin cited the famous New Testament verse, Matthew 25:35 — “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,” — to describe Reighard's service to the community. Reighard joined MUST Ministries in 2011. The organization provides assistance to families and individuals in need, from food drives and fundraisers to the Hope House Emergency Shelter, which sleeps 136 residents. After receiving a standing ovation, Reighard made his way to the front of the room and accepted the award from Tumlin and Andy Gaines, the 2022 Marietta Area Council director. Two former Amazon employees who worked at an Amazon warehouse in Smyrna pleaded guilty after being accused of stealing nearly $10 million from the company, federal prosecutors announced Thursday. The defendants stole the funds while employed at the company in managerial and loss prevention roles, prosecutors said, and spent it on real estate, sports cars and jewelry. Ryan K. Buchanan, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said that Kayricka Wortham of Atlanta and Demetrius Hines of Smyrna used their positions at the e-commerce and tech giant to submit more than $10 million in fictitious invoices for fake vendors, leading the company to pay approximately $9.4 million to Wortham, Hines and co-conspirators. As part of their sentencing, Wortham and Hines will forfeit cash and assets purchased with the stolen funds, prosecutors said. For Wortham, that includes more than $2.7 million, a Smyrna residence (purchased for more than $900,000), a 2019 Lamborghini Urus, a 2021 Dodge Durango, a 2022 Tesla Model X, a 2018 Porsche Panamera and a Kawasaki ZX636 motorcycle. Hines will forfeit more than $600,000, along with a 2022 Suzuki GSX1300 Motorcycle, a 2013 Ford Shelby Mustang, a 2021 Ford F-150 Black Widow, a Rolex Day-Date watch, a diamond bracelet and a diamond necklace. Wortham, 31, also known as Kayricka Dupree or Kayricka Young, was the leader of the scheme and worked as an operations manager at Amazon from August 2020 to March 2022 at the Smyrna warehouse, according to prosecutors. A Marietta man was sentenced to life in prison for aggravated sodomy, the Cobb County District Attorney's office announced Wednesday. Travis Leonard Hudson, 50, was sentenced by Cobb Superior Court Judge Mary Staley Clark Monday after he was found guilty by a jury on November 18, according to a news release from the DA's office. Prosecutors said Hudson's trial began Nov. 14, and that he was tried for sexually assaulting a female acquaintance on the night of March 12, 2021. The woman was reportedly visiting Hudson at his apartment and woke up to him assaulting her. Following an investigation by the Cobb County Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Unit, Hudson was arrested in June of last year. During the trial, Assistant District Attorney Sarah Hilleren presented the testimony of law enforcement, the victim, medical professionals and other evidence, the release said.   An Acworth woman and alleged gang member previously convicted for her involvement in the murder of a 17-year-old in Bartow County has been sentenced to more than a decade in federal prison, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday. Jennifer Foutz, 30, received 12 years in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, after she pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting murder in aid of racketeering, and aiding and abetting the use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in death, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia said. Gary Terrell Davis was sentenced this week for his role in the murder, the last of eight alleged members or associates of northwest Georgia's 135 Pirus gang accused in the murder. The lead defendant in the case, Maurice Antonio Kent, 32, of Cartersville, was found guilty of four felonies in May. On Aug. 24, Kent was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison to be followed by three years of supervised release. Others convicted in the case included Christopher Nwanjoku, 30, of Lawrenceville, Jamel Dupree Hughes, 27, of Atlanta, Cedric Sams, 29, of Cartersville, Michael Kent, 32, of Atlanta and DaSean Dorey, 29, of Decatur. Foutz, also known as “Rose,” had previously been arrested in connection to an unrelated shooting at an Acworth gas station in June 2017. Authorities said at the time she and Hughes encountered a member of another gang at the gas station. Hughes allegedly shot the member of the other gang multiple times before undercover police at the gas station working an unrelated case saw the shooting, and proceeded to pursue Foutz and Hughes, who attempted to flee in their car. For the Blue Devils, it was their eighth shutout of the season and third straight to open the playoffs. The defense was so dominant it allowed only two first downs over the first 39 minutes of the 40 minute game, and only two plays of more than five yards during that stretch. With 3:53 left to play, North Gwinnett had one last chance to try to work its way downfield to try and tie the game, instead it went backwards. A run on first down lost three yards, a botched pitch on a reverse lost seven yards and two incomplete passes gave the ball back to Marietta at the Bulldogs' 5-yard line. It took only one play for Hennessey to find Gabi O'Neill with a short touchdown pass to put the game away.  Monday's semifinal matchup will be played at the Atlanta Falcons training facility in Flowery Branch. It is the first time the final four will be played there.   The Marietta Police Department and its retiree association honored women who have worked on the force in a ceremony at City Hall on Thursday. Jack Shields, a retired sergeant who worked for the MPD for 33 years and now organizes the department's retiree club, had the idea for the ceremony when he heard Susan Fuder would be in town for the regular MPD retiree lunch. Fuder, now in her 70s, became Marietta's first woman police officer in 1972. She was an officer for 10 years, during which she worked on patrol and in crime prevention. Shields said he figured it would be a good opportunity to recognize all women police officers. He and Marietta Chief Marty Ferrell presented Fuder with a plaque for her service. Fuder said when she applied to be an officer, the police chief at the time asked if she was sure she didn't want to be a secretary. She was sure — and had wanted to be a police officer since childhood. When Fuder became an officer she said her first uniform was a skirt, despite her request for pants. That changed after she had to retrieve a stolen bicycle tossed in some brambles. Frank Fuder, her husband who coached football at Osborne and Campbell high schools, said at the time he was concerned about her safety, but knew she would do a first rate job.

Three years ago, BJ Ojulari walked toward Mercedes-Benz Stadium with an LSU hat and his mother instructed him not to wear it. They were there to support his older brother, Azeez, a rising star at outside linebacker for Georgia. On top of that, she reminded him, the school provided their tickets. BJ begrudgingly stuffed the hat in his pocket until they reached their seats. He put it back on once they got there, making him the only person in a section filled with red and black who rooted for the Tigers at the 2019 Southeastern Conference championship game. His mother told him to go to the LSU side, to which BJ responded that he was LSU to the core. BJ had committed to LSU two months earlier to make a name for himself in college football. He wanted Azeez to play well that day, but he cheered for the team he would one day lead back to the conference title game. With the situation flipped, BJ expects Azeez to approach the SEC championship Saturday afternoon in Atlanta the same way he once did. He is the leader of LSU's defense, but his brother has other allegiances. They've bantered ever since No. 14 LSU and No. 1 Georgia clinched their spots about three weeks ago. BJ knows Azeez wants him to succeed on Saturday, but he will be rooting for the Dawgs. An Atlanta-area native with his brother already there, BJ was pursued by the Bulldogs. He called them "a big factor" in his recruitment. Azeez tried to sway him as well, and BJ thought about following him. But he felt embraced by then-LSU coach Ed Orgeron and his staff, which offered a younger brother the chance to establish himself. In three years, BJ has done that. He blossomed into a star while LSU struggled to an 11-12 record the last two seasons. Then new defensive coordinator Matt House moved him from defensive end to standup outside linebacker, which helped him take another step.BJ is showing talent and versatility that may make him an early round pick in the NFL Draft.   In the wake of the 2020 census, the Marietta City Council is preparing to redistrict the city's seven wards, which serve as districts for both the council and Marietta Board of Education. After the census is taken every ten years, the city must redraw its ward lines, if the wards' populations are not roughly equal in size, as required by federal law. Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin told the MDJ Monday he expects each ward to have about 8,600 people. Marietta has about 61,500 people, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The council's Judicial Legislative Committee began the process Tuesday by appointing its three members — Chairman Andy Morris, Cheryl Richardson and Andre Sims — to the city's ad hoc Redistricting Ward Map Study Committee. The three council members on the committee will have voting privileges. A Marietta school board member will also sit on the committee but have no vote on the maps. The Marietta school board follows the same ward maps as the council. Tumlin said the committee will hold public meetings to determine new ward maps, which will be drawn with the help of computer software. That software, he said, takes the census results into account to create new boundaries. At Tuesday's meeting, city Attorney Doug Haynie said the city is no longer required to gain pre-clearance, or approval from the U.S. Department of Justice, for its redistricted ward maps. Before the landmark 2013 U.S. Supreme Court decision Shelby County v. Holder, all redistricting plans in the state required pre-clearance from the Justice Department to ensure maps were fairly drawn and did not discriminate against any group of voters.   Santa Claus visited the Jonquil City on Wednesday night, where he lit downtown Smyrna's giant Christmas tree with a shower of magic dust. Residents flooded downtown Smyrna around City Hall for the city's annual “Coming Home for the Holidays” event. Richard Garland, the city's parks and recreation director, estimated more than 5,000 people attended. “It was wall to wall from the colonnade at the entrance all the way down to city hall,” Garland said. Choirs from Osborne and Campbell high schools and nine elementary schools sang carols throughout the evening. Despite warmer weather, people walked around the festive downtown sipping free hot chocolate. When the time came, Santa was led into the festival by the Campbell High marching band, then lifted into the air in the basket of a fire truck as the crowd chanted his name. A reported delay in absentee ballot mailings for the Dec. 6 U.S. Senate runoff election was due to office closures for the Thanksgiving holiday, Cobb's elections chief said Wednesday. Elections Director Janine Eveler said more than 3,400 ballots were affected by the delay, but have since been mailed to voters. “Everything is out the door,” she said. Those ballots were originally marked as issued on November 23, the day before Thanksgiving. Multiple state lawmakers told the MDJ they'd heard from constituents that their ballots — marked as issued in the state's ballot tracker — had still not been received as of earlier this week. In the case of the 3,442 ballots marked issued on the 23rd, Eveler said they were mailed out Monday because her office was closed on Thanksgiving Day and the day after. The reported delays sparked concerns the ballots were not mailed at all, as happened with more than 1,000 ballots in the weeks prior to the Nov. 6 general election. In that instance, Eveler initially said there was no evidence a significant number of ballots were missing, but days later announced the ballots had never been mailed. State Rep. David Wilkerson, D-Powder Springs, said he'd been tracking the ballot requests in the secretary of state's system, but it's too early to tell if there have been any errors. When the issue was made public before the general election, it was weeks after the ballots had supposedly been mailed. All absentee ballots must be returned by the time the polls close at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6. Voters can check the status of their absentee ballot at mvp.sos.ga.gov.   The McEachern girls outscored Kell 12-1 in overtime to win 66-55 in a battle of top-10 teams at Lovinggood Arena on Tuesday. The Indians ranked Number 8 in Class 7A, got 18 points from Jada Bates and 17 from Kalise Hill to offset 35 points from the Longhorns' Crystal Henderson. Bates connected on back-to-back 3-pointers — the second coming with 3:49 to play in the third quarter — to give McEachern its biggest lead in regulation at 37-30. Henderson then scored 18 of Kell's final 21 points in regulation, including making two 3-pointers and going 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Two free throws from Haleigh Cephus and one from Williams gave the Indians a 57-54 lead, and moments later, Taylor Collins hit a 3 to push the lead to six. With just seconds left in the game and the shot clock running down, Collins made her second 3 in overtime — a 30-footer — to cap the scoring. Collins and Williams each finished the night with nine points.    Cobb EMC's Holiday Light Tour will feature light displays at the Cobb EMC Solar Flower Garden along with nine other homes serviced by the electric cooperative. “Many of our members told us how much they enjoyed the Holiday Light Tour last year and we can't wait to brighten the holiday season once again,” said Kris Delaney, Vice President of Marketing at Cobb EMC. “It's a chance for families and the community to experience some amazing light displays from Cobb EMC members that are participating for a great cause.” Cobb EMC's Holiday Light Tour kicks off with the grand lighting drive-through event on Dec. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Solar Flower Garden at Cobb EMC off Highway 41 in Marietta.   A 23-year-old died from injuries sustained in a Sunday car wreck in west Cobb, police announced. Amarjeet S. Ranhotra of Acworth was killed in the crash, which occurred on Due West Road near its intersection with Lanesborough Drive, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Ranhotra was driving eastbound in a 2002 silver Honda Odyssey, police said. At around 7:30 a.m., while negotiating a left curve, Ranhotra lost control and crossed into the westbound lane. The right side of the Honda collided with the front of a brown 2012 Ford F-250. Ranhotra was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the Ford was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening. Saturday. Marietta police said Herrera-Lopez was speeding, traveling south on Cobb Parkway, when he failed to yield for Okabah. After being struck by Herrera-Lopez, Okabah's vehicle struck the rear of a stopped 2020 Jeep Gladiator driven a 41-year-old man from Florida. According to police, Herrera-Lopez's truck rolled over once before landing back on its wheels and coming to rest on the side of the road. Okabah sustained serious injuries and was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment, police said. Herrera-Lopez and the Florida man sustained minor injuries. Hat tricks are usually kept for soccer or hockey. It's not often you find one on the football field, but that is exactly what happened over a 7 minute period in McEachern's 26-0 victory over Alpharetta in the second round of the Class 7A flag football playoffs on Tuesday. Senior Kye Giddens intercepted three passes on three consecutive Alpharetta drives. She set up two short touchdown drives on the first two, but on the third, she returned it 25 yards for a touchdown with 40.3 seconds left in the first half. The effort helped the Indians remain undefeated at 18-0, and they will host Milton, which they beat 7-6 in the season opener, in the state quarterfinals on Thursday.  Giddens, who is mainly a wide receiver on offense, made one of her few times on defense count against Alpharetta. Crunch time came with 7:39 to play in the first half. Amber Kirkpatrick had just thrown her first touchdown pass of the game to give the Indians a 7-0 lead. On the first play of the ensuing Alpharetta drive, Giddens grabbed her first interception to set the offense up with a short field.  Two plays later, Kirkpatrick connected with De'Aysia Williams for a touchdown with 3:48 to play for a 13-0 lead. The win was the 12th shutout of the season, and now the Indians will try to do something they haven't done before. All three years they have advanced to the state quarterfinals, but they have yet to advance to the semifinals.  Of the eight teams remaining in the Class 7A playoffs, McEachern is one of four Cobb County teams still alive.  Marietta advanced to quarterfinals by beating Wheeler 26-0 in opener, then defeated Archer 6-0. Allatoona downed Westlake and Centennial by identical 26-7 scores, and Pope (beat Osborne 27-7 in Round 1 and followed by rolling past Grayson 32-12.  The Blue Devils will host North Gwinnett, the Buccaneers will host Roswell and the Greyhounds will travel to Blessed Trinity on Thursday. The winners will advance to the semifinals December 5 at the Atlanta Falcons training facility in Flowery Branch A new bike station in Cobb's commercial hub was unveiled Tuesday, now the eighth of the network. The station is next to the Battery's Silver Deck on Circle 75 Parkway, steps from Truist Park. Riders will have direct access to the Cobb Galleria across the pedestrian bridge over I-285, along with dozens of miles of trails around the area. With the launch of the station by the Cumberland Community Improvement District (CID), it brings the program's total fleet up to about 40 bikes. As with the rest of Cumberland's fleet, the bikes are unlocked using a QR code printed on their body. The first hour of a ride is free, followed by a fee of $3 per hour. Ali Nuckles of Georgia Commute Options, a group that aims to reduce pollution by encouraging alternative transportation modes, said the bike share program would help reduce emissions and traffic. Other stations are located near the Galleria, Cumberland Mall, the Rottenwood Creek trailhead, and on the far side of the Battery. The CID hopes to soon open a ninth station along Akers Mill Road, between Cumberland Boulevard and Powers Ferry Road. That expansion will bring the fleet up to 45 bikes. Interested residents can look up the full trail network along with bike station locations at cumberlandtrails.org. On Giving Tuesday, the day of charitable giving that follows the commercial holidays of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, a Cobb County YMCA distributed food to local families at Smyrna's Brumby Elementary. The Northeast Cobb Family YMCA distributes food every week. This Tuesday, each family could receive fresh onions, apples, cabbage, cucumbers and bread, along with canned goods. Gayle Battersby, the director of operations at the Northeast Cobb Family YMCA in east Cobb, said they partner with the Atlanta Community Food Bank to provide the produce. YMCAs across the country scaled up their food distribution programs in March of 2020. Battersby said when the pandemic hit, the number of families requiring help shot up. At one point, the Northeast Cobb YMCA was providing food to about 475 Cobb families weekly. That number declined as the pandemic receded, but she said it recently spiked again to around 270 as the cost of rent and gas has increased. The food is distributed almost entirely by a team of volunteers, and the funds for the program are raised entirely by the Northeast Cobb YMCA. According to volunteer Joan Cotter, the crowd of people receiving food on Tuesday was small compared to the usual turnout. She said last week, before Thanksgiving, the volunteers had to organize the cars into five separate lines. On Giving Tuesday, the Journal counted 15 cars in line 30 minutes after the event began.   Troop 353 held an Eagle Scout ceremony on November 19 at Burnt hickory Baptist Church. The scouts were: Tyler Clement, a senior at Hillgrove High School, whose project was a Tranquility Garden at Cobb Hospital. Jacob Fisher, a senior at Allatoona High School, whose project was building a Gaga Ball pit at Due West United Methodist Church. Luke White, a senior at Living Science Academy, whose project was a playground fence at Cobb Vineyard Church in Kennesaw. Sean Cauffiel, a senior at Harrison High School, whose project was a Butterfly Garden at Ford Elementary. Daniel Hurley, a senior at Harrison High School, whose project was an outdoor clasroom at Ford Elementary. All of these scouts started together as Cub Scouts, rose through the ranks and crossed over to Troop 353. They all stayed in their own patrol and made Eagle together.

This week on Inside the Headset, we are featuring the 2021 AFCA Regional Power of Influence award winners. These coaches include Lou Marinelli from New Canaan High School (Conn.), Gary Rankin from Boyd Buchanan High School (Tenn.), Jake Gilbert from Westfield High School (Ind.), Bill Blankenship from Owasso High School (Okla.) and Tim Brennan from Bishop Kelly High School (Idaho). Lou Marinelli has been the head coach for the New Canaan Rams for 40 seasons and has a record of 349-103-6. If you include his other stops at Mamaroneck (N.Y.) High School and Yorktown (N.Y.) High School, his overall record stands at 368-110-7. After lettering in football at Springfield College, Marinelli began his coaching career at Mamaroneck in 1976. He moved to Boston College as an assistant coach for two years before returning to the high school ranks in 1979 at Yorktown. After two seasons, Marinelli began his New Canaan run in 1981. After going 4-5 in his first season, he brought the Rams the first of 12 state titles in 1982. New Canaan's other state titles came in 1993, 2001-02, 2006-09, and 2013-16. The winningest head coach in Connecticut high school football history, Marinelli's trophy case is full of awards that he has won over the years, including the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) Coach of the Year several times, National Football Foundation Coach of the Year, Walter Camp Football Foundation's Connecticut Coach of the Year, Connecticut High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year, the Legendary Coach Award by MSG Network, and National Football League Coach of the Year in 2008, to name a few. Marinelli has been inducted into the Connecticut High School Hall of Fame, FCIAC Hall of Fame, Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame, and the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame. Gary Rankin recently completed his 16th and final season as the head coach at Alcoa High School where he led the Tornadoes to 13 state titles. Coach Rankin was named the head coach of Boyd Buchanan High school in February 2022. Rankin began his coaching career at Warren County (Tenn.) High School as an assistant coach. Rankin also has 16 state championships, which is a Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) record. Since Rankin has coached at Alcoa, the team has been to the state championship game all but two years. He has added a long list of accolades, including Knox News Lifetime Achievement Award, coached 13 Tennessee Mr. Football Award winners, one Gatorade Player of the Year, East Tennessee CAREacter Star Coach of the Year award, 2009 Tennessee Titans Coach of the Week, and countless other Coach of the Year awards. Rankin was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2011. Jake Gilbert, who earned his second straight AFCA Power of Influence Regional honor, completed his 11th season as head coach at Westfield High School by leading the Rocks to a 12-2 record and a second straight appearance in the Indiana High School 6A state championship game. That was Westfield's fourth appearance in the state championship game under Gilbert. In 2016, he guided Westfield to the school's first ever state championship. Gilbert has won several Coach of the Year honors including Indiana Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2016 and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Indiana Coach of the Year in 2017. On this episode, Zach interviews Malik Willis, the starting QB for the Liberty Flames football team. He was born May 25th in Atlanta, Georgia to parents Shastca Grier and Harold Willis, Malik Willis has had a bumpy path to the NFL. The high school star split his time at Westlake High School and Roswell High School. Willis was a four-year letter winner in football who led his team to the Class 7A state title game as a senior. He has also been named 7A AJC offensive player of the year and first-team all-state. Willis also lettered in baseball and was an honor roll student. 247Sports Composite Rankings listed the Georgia native as a 3-star recruit, the 368th recruit in the nation, the 21st athlete recruit in the nation and the 35th-best recruit in the state of Georgia. Willis committed to and enrolled at Auburn. During his 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Tigers, the athletic passer played in 15 games. The former three-star recruit admitted to becoming complacent with the Tigers after expecting to be a starter and claims the experience humbled him. Auburn coaches praised Willis for being a great teammate. After his second year at Auburn, Willis transferred to Liberty and sat out the 2019 season due to NCAA transfer rules before starting for the Flames in 2020. The star quarterback thrived in his new environment, recording 2250 passing yards and 20 passing touchdowns (to just six interceptions). He also put up 944 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. Willis led the Flames to a ten-win season and a final Top 25 ranking in the AP Poll and the Coaches' Poll. The athletic passer was Liberty's first-ever Dudley Award winner, given annually to the top college football player in Virginia. Willis's teammates at Liberty praise his work ethic and ability as a mentor. The accomplished quarterback is a religious person off the field. Willis is a marketing major. He has an NFL bloodline, as his uncle played in the league for 11 years. Willis played through a left-elbow injury for most of the 2020 season. Also, on our "House Call" segment of the show, Dr. Tim Clinton will answer a question from one of you. Tim Clinton, Ed.D, LPC, LMFT, is the President of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), the largest and most diverse Christian counseling association in the world.
