Ahmad and David join me this week and discuss their podcast, The Authentic Dating Series. They started their podcast about dating because of their observations and seeing that much of dating advice that exists today is tactical-meaning "do this" and "say this" and you can expect "that." These gentleman started their podcast to assist men with communicating with their emotions and open and honesty. They discuss that as a man, the value is about who you are and NOT about how much money you make or the things you purchase and provide. They've been cranking out weekly podcasts for about the last 18 months and use Libsyn to host their show. We discuss some of the perks of each of our hosting platforms and our success and tribulations using social media to promote our shows. Today's episode Features Dr. Stanley Ward. He is the founder and principal of Influence Coaching, LLC and is an esteemed leadership coach. We discuss burnout and learning to manage the drive that helps you be a great leader while not doing damage to yourself and those around you. View yourself and others as "engines." Some of us are diesel engines(heavy loads at low rpm), others are gasoline (same loads, higher RPM) but cannot go as far. Dr. Ward also mentions a book by Thomas Kilman and talks about how we can think of all conflicts as concern for self or a concern for others. In identifying these, try using the phrase, "Here's what I need from you, what do you need from me?" If work is not getting done and if good people are in place, assume it is processes. Burnout can come from being micromanaged. Also being withdrawn from people and being cynical. Today's guest is Susan Sloan, the author of A Seat at the Table: Women, Diplomacy, and Lessons for the World. She's not only an author, but also a world travel-having been to all seven continents. Susan discusses how bringing people of different backgrounds, races and genders can give us strength in numbers. The thought that the people making the decisions to affect others should roughly reflect the demographics of the people they represent. In leadership, strength in numbers can be positive or negative. They can be used to make positive change or enable groupthink. Susan also speaks of gender equality and going into detail of some gender attributes and how utilizing them together in the workplace is the "secret sauce." Gender attributes are not all-encompassing, but being aware of them in addition to finding your team's strengths and weaknesses can take your team to the next level. Through Susan's studies, she's discovered the ideal percentage breakdown between genders in the workplace. I'm not going to give it away, listen to the episode! To be successful in leadership, you need to have GRIT. What is grit? Well according to the article mentioned/linked below, GRIT is having the passion and perseverance for long-term and meaningful goals. You can be smart and talented but without grit, all of your natural talents could quickly turn into wasted potential. You can become grittier by recognizing that things are difficult and make the conscious decision to keep pushing yourself. Persevere through the struggle knowing that you will come out on the other end, in the long term, better for it. https://www.newharbinger.com/blog/what-grit-and-why-it-important (The article mentioned in the episode.) Justin Nguyen (pronounced "Winn") is the host of The Declassified College Podcast, which is focuses on the niche of traditional college students and giving them the cheat codes to success in their higher education. His inspiration comes from his experience in college. He crushed his grades and had several internships, working his rear end off. Many of his friends gave him a hard time for his success and joked that it came to him through luck. In reality, he was getting home from an internship and then studying past midnight for class the next morning. He used the phrase "get cho grind up" as a battle cry to tell others that success is often followed by behind-the-scenes hard work and dedication. This episode revolves around an episode of the Order of Man Podcast that I listened to. There's a lot of great stuff in the episode, and I encourage you to check it out-link below. The Privilege Mindset. Sure, some people are born with unique opportunities that others do not have at birth. Is the expectation that I NOT capitalize/leverage those gifts that I was given so that I can make others feel better? Absolutely not. If you have gifts or advantages (even if they are "unfair") USE THEM. Just because people have something, does not always mean that you cannot have something. You are not fat, just because someone else it ripped. You are not poor, because someone else is rich. It's a great way to think about life in general. If you show me someone who is ripped (in shape) I will show you someone who does more stuff than you. This doesn't just apply to working out. Think about it in general. For this example, people are in great shape still have the same feelings everyone else does. There's days they don't feel like working out because they are tired, sore, busy, etc. But the difference between that person and others is that they suck it up and still do it. They make the decision to execute and get to work when it is much easier to do nothing. Be obsessed with visions. Picture your goals and dreams coming to fruition. Visualize what will occur and how it looks and feels when you achieve that goal. Also, look at your goals and think about the type of person who is already there. The example is owning a $26 million home. Sure, it's easy to do the math of what it takes to get there (NOT easy to earn the money to get there) but imagine what the person who is already there does. How does he live his life? What does he do when he wakes up? How does he treat his spouse? How does he treat his kids? How does he run his business? How does he lead in his community? Why do people get triggered? It's because someone else has something, and the person who is triggered because he is not willing to do the work to get it. Plain and simple. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-power-of-uncomfortable-truths-sean-whalen/id979752171?i=1000475290504 (The Order of Man: The Power of Uncomfortable Truths | SEAN WHALEN) https://www.orderofman.com/ https://player.captivate.fm/episode/553a8cd2-0128-4b83-a541-b67ab60a9296 (The Three Rules to Success) If you find this content valuable and would like access to some cool perks, become a patron, here https://www.patreon.com/talkingllamamedia. I don't like movements or people that tell you to settle where you are. You should never settle for mediocrity and should ALWAYS (yes, an absolute) try to be better. If you are paying for a coach and he is telling you that "you are enough," what are you paying that person for? Coaches should be pushing you and putting you in uncomfortable situations so that you grow and become better. Growth and long-term success does not come from being constantly comfortable. We do not have control over other peoples' opinions. We should not change ourselves with the intent of changing someone's opinion. Other peoples' opinions are outside of our control. So that means we could change ourselves (internal decision within our control) and we still may not change the opinion of another person (external decision, outside of our control). Don't waste your time and energy trying to change for others. If you want to change, be deliberate about it and do it for YOU! Being mediocre is addicting. The "you are enough" movement encourages that addiction to mediocrity. Be more than mediocre, be great! People who talk the most trash, are often doing the least. Agree? https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-power-of-uncomfortable-truths-sean-whalen/id979752171?i=1000475290504 (The Order of Man: The Power of Uncomfortable Truths | SEAN WHALEN) https://www.orderofman.com/ Talkingllama.com If you find this content valuable and would like access to some cool perks, become a patron, here https://www.patreon.com/talkingllamamedia. Many of you know Jordan Syatt as the fitness coach who is crushing it on Instagram (over 600K followers!) and Youtube with his brutally honest and advice on fitnesses and nutrition. Not only does he know what he's talking about in the gym, but he has shifted a large portion of his business from one on one client coaching sessions to his Inner Circle. This allows him to serve more people at once and gives people the opportunity to be coached by him who maybe could not afford his one on one rates. Awesome stuff here for those of us who are looking to build an online community. Joey Held is a fellow podcaster who hosts two podcasts Good People, Cool Things and Parks and Wrecked and is a pro on storytelling. Joey discusses storytelling and ways to effectively communicate to your listeners. Some easy ways are simply putting yourself in the shoes (or shoe) of your audience in order to build relatability and credibility. Think of a comedian who makes a living telling jokes about fatherhood and other adult related topics. That comedian then decides to take his act to college campuses. The story (or jokes, in this case) are not relatable to the audience, therefore there were not seen as "funny." In this example, the comedian was able to figure out the disparity and then tweaked his message to speak to his audience. If all you are trying to do is promote yourself, it will not turn out well! Learn about your audience and make the story about them! If you find this content valuable and would like access to some cool perks, become a patron, here https://www.patreon.com/talkingllamamedia. Bring full presence to a situation, think about leading someone, biggest thing is having a clear idea of where you are leading them, front or behind. Be intentional about it because you have that responsibility on your shoulders and need to have an aim and outcome in mind. Without a clear intention, how do you get others to buy in and come together as a team? Communicate how actions now get to larger picture Restate person's statement, “what I heard you say was…” shared intention, active listening, start with questions Get on call and have a meeting, at end, come back and ask, “do you feel like we covered everything?” Gives them buy in and makes them feel validated. Make a shared experience, not feeling hijacked, ASK QUESTIONS to ge clarity, repeat things back Can't lead someone who is disengaged, no sense of cohesiveness or trust- MUST get their buy in Conflict and leadership Show people how what they're doing moves the needle for everyone. Conflict, no definition of success, how can people figure out what is expected of them? Lack of communication or leaving vacuum of unknowns does not work. When someone's back is against the wall-the immediate response is to be defensive and to blame. Part of intention is being a student of those around you-emotional intelligence Have to care, be socially aware of what makes them tick, plays to their strengths SHARED INTENTION is an art Words have meaning and become more persuasive when there's empathy behind them. Sean is a podcast host of, you guessed it, The Sean Lowery Show! He talks about business & Entertainment. With the goal of being the voice on important, fun, and crucial conversations in business & society. Some have called him a cross between Gary Vee & Joe Rogan. Sean has been recording his show for over 40 weeks, releasing weekly. He also has his own business of 15 people, https://www.united-monograms.com (United Monograms) designing monogrammed shirts. His products are beautiful and my wife and I are actually proud customers. His episode lengths range from 5 minutes to 2 hour episodes and come in both solo and interview formats. Actually, his first 15 episodes were solo episodes. When it comes to structure, Sean has a rough structure to his episodes, but likes to have no strict rules on his podcast and take the episode wherever he or the guest wishes to go. Some of his advice to growing your own podcast is to put some thought into your audio, video and episode thumbnails-people are more apt to click on and listen to things that look good! He's also had success making a one minute highlight reel so that listeners can hear a teaser of the entire episode before they totally invest their time into it. Sean is passionate about making your guests look good. If you are interviewing someone, you should make them look like and sound like the star of the show. This episode features https://www.linkedin.com/in/nelsonetoriano/ (Nelson Toriano), the founder/CEO of Coach Nelly Toriano LLC. He has also written a book, the link at at the bottom of this page. Nelson has a passion for the fitness industry but noticed a trend. The trend was that many personal trainers and gym owners did not know basic business practices. Nelson noticed this trend and in addition to coaching people in fitness, began coaching personal trainers in entrepreneurship, sales, marketing and basic accounting practices. Part of his business includes frequent speaking engagements to organizations and college students. Nelson discusses some of the ways he prepares for these speaking engagements and things that he does during his speech to maximize audience engagement and receive quality feedback from his listeners. Unrelated to the theme of this podcast, the end of the episode features a few exercises to get shredded abs. I don't like it, but the first suggested exercise is the plank. This week's episode features https://www.linkedin.com/in/divyaparekh/ (Divya Parekh), who is an author and business and leadership coach explains to us how we can provide feedback to our teams (even negative feedback) professionally and with empathy. As leaders, we must set ground rules, or expectations for our team members. During this time, we inform of our team of what we need/want them to do and what occurs if they do not live up to these expectations. Setting these guidelines up-front communicates a clear message of what will happen in the future if an employee does or does not do something. Much of the anxiety in the workplace results in coming from unknowns, so the clearer and more transparent that we can be in telling our team what they can expect to happen, we reduce that feeling of the unknown. Divya also discusses mindfulness and the importance of being present in the moment. It's so easy to want to always be thinking of the future or what we will say next. How can we be active listeners and mindful of what others are saying if we are brainstorming what we will say next? I had a lot of fun recording this and Divya dropped some major knowledge bombs and opened my eyes to new ways of seeing some important leadership topics. Check out Divya's book, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TDN3BYX/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8andtag=highhopesinit-20andcreative=9325andlinkCode=as2andcreativeASIN=B07TDN3BYXandlinkId=14b2051a369f24b0dff35a00c0d8ae3f (Expert to Influencer: How To Position Yourself for Meaningful Impact. ) If you find this content valuable and would like access to some cool perks, become a patron, here https://www.patreon.com/talkingllamamedia. This week marks a very first for the Get Heard Podcast. https://www.linkedin.com/in/dina-brenci-97ab02172/ (Dina Brenci) is a dating coach. How does a dating coach relate to leadership or communication? I'm so glad you asked! Leadership is similar to dating in that to be successful, we must first believe in ourselves. Self limiting beliefs are detrimental to our success in both of these fields. To overcome this, we need to understand that we are unique individuals and not try to be someone else. Be present in the moment! How much of life has passed you by because you were too engaged in social media or not aware of what was going on around you? Dina mentions that when we are communicating with others through text messages, it's so easy to forget that there's a person at the other end who has real, human feelings. How many times do you find yourself communicating with the phone instead of the person on the other end? We also discuss Dating with Scrum. What is it? I won't spoil the surprise, listen to this episode! If you find this content valuable and would like access to some cool perks, become a patron, here https://www.patreon.com/talkingllamamedia. I hope this episode finds you well! It seems we are nearing the tail end of this crisis and will hopefully be returning to some sort of normal life soon. We all have dealt and are dealing with the effects of this event in many ways. There is no "right" way to deal with it. Don't let those people who are constantly preaching the rhetoric along the lines of "you need to come out of this isolation with your own business/learn a new language/ insert nonsense here." Maybe you are able to do this. Maybe not. Both are okay. Don't compare yourself to others and what they are or are not doing. Compare yourself to the person you were yesterday. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinmbarba/ (Kevin Barba) is the founder of The Unwavering, a company who specializes in providing various services and educating active duty service members, their spouses and veterans in transitioning to civilian life. Kevin mentions that when applying for a job, it is often times less about what is written on your resume and more about you being a fit to the company's culture. He also states the importance of being proud of your military background (for those of us veterans out there) but understanding that post transition, you are now part of a different culture with different rules. Kevin strongly believes that he would not be where he is today without mentors. He discusses several instances of people believing in him and investing their time into developing him throughout his career. This week's episode with https://www.linkedin.com/in/meiphing/ (Mei Phing) covers a ton of topics! Mei discusses emotional intelligence (EQ) and how mastering it enables us to better understand our emotions and how they affect others. We also discuss the importance of active listening and the difference between confidence and arrogance. We then go into detail about some of the challenges related to being a young leader in charge of a team with people who are older or more senior to you. One of the ways to overcome this as a young leader is to know your job and be open to feedback. While you may not yet have the most experience, you should know the ins and outs of your job from a technical level so that you can clearly understand what your employees are doing. Asking for feedback is not a sign of weakness! It shows that you are self-aware and approachable. I hope you enjoy this episode and would love if you could leave this podcast a review! Three things I was absolutely AFRAID to do when I started my podcast were to: Cut out irrelevant interview dialogue Ask the people that I already knew to help promote my show Ask people to be on my show Be proud and take ownership of your podcast. It is YOUR podcast, it doesn't belong to your guest and no one will help get the word out there unless you ask! Transcription provided by Transcriptions Central: Welcome to the Talking Llama Podcast, a podcast for podcasters. Thanks for stopping by, as we discuss all things podcasting, like gear, and creative processes, even marketing and promoting your brand. If you're looking to grow, monetize or even just start your podcast, you're in the right place. Talking Llama podcast is here to help you tell your story to the world with confidence. Here's your host, Ian Roth. Hey, what's going on out there, fellow Llamas? Ian with the Talking Llama Podcast, Talking Llama Media. So today is an extra bonus episode. So thank you so much for listening. We're going to keep it short. Put out three things that I wish I would have known when I started my podcast and I still strive to practice every day even though it's a little challenging, but three things that I wish I would have known when I started and if you're out there thinking of starting a podcast, I think could be very beneficial to you also. The first thing that I wish I would have known when I was early on in my podcast is in regard to editing. Thing number one being; don't be afraid to edit stuff out of your episodes. So I know especially starting out getting guests on the show is kind of scary at first. You have another person volunteering his or her time to come on your show, and you want to make sure that you capture everything that person says in your episode and then put it out to everybody. But sometimes people will go off on tangents. Sometimes they will say things you don't agree with or that aren't in line with your show and you're the host, this is your show, your damn show. You are the gatekeeper of what gets published on it. So if your guest says something stupid or something that doesn't fit, cut it out of your episode. You are at no obligation to keep that stuff in your show, so cut the stuff out and make the episode be 100% what you want it to be. Not going to hurt anybody's feelings. You're not going to offend anybody and if your guest is a podcaster and has a show, more than likely he or she will understand that you have to do some editing. Maybe the interview went over the allotted time and you're very stringent on how long your podcast episodes are and need to cut some stuff out even if it's good, worthwhile stuff. Think of maybe doing an extra bonus episode after or another turning into a video some other kind of media to keep your podcast where you want it to be. So, bonus content is a great way to leverage this. We'll call it thing number one: Your show, your editing. Don't forget that. Thing number two when starting your podcast is leverage your network. More than likely you're on some sort of social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. For me it is LinkedIn and that is really my home on social media. So, when you're looking for guests and people to be on your podcast, there are people within your social network that you can ask to be on your podcast. It is really that easy. You don't need to go out and try to get Gary Vee on for your second episode of your podcast or some huge... Support this podcast

So, doing another podcasting 101 episode today and this one is going to be 10 facts about podcasting. So the goal of this series again is to get you know, the person may be sitting there thinking of starting a podcast to give you some information, arm you with some knowledge and facts so that you can take that big step and start your journey down the road to podcasting. It is one of the craziest, yet most rewarding things I've ever done. It is so fun. It allows me to release this creativity that I have inside me, and is so awesome. Not only that I've connected to all these other great people across the country, across the world, that I never would have otherwise spoken with. So, podcasting 101, we're doing 10 facts about podcasting today. Fact number one, 197 million Americans have heard of podcasts. So to put it another way, that is 70% of Americans are aware that podcasts exist. So compare that to 2006 where only 22% of US adults said they are familiar with podcasting, in 2020 70% or 197 million Americans have heard of podcast. So again, if you're thinking of starting a podcast, there are a lot of people out there that are listening to podcasts. Another good reason why you should start. I think instead of 10 facts about podcasting, this should really be 10 reasons why you should start your podcast. Fact number two, 51% of Americans, again, the majority of Americans over the age of 12 have listened to podcasts. So that is 144 million podcast listeners. Podcasts are blowing up the sound waves and the media world. So again, over half of Americans have listened to podcasts. Do it now, start a podcast. Going to fact and reason number three, 32% of Americans have listened to podcasts in the last month or once a month. So, 32%, almost a third of Americans listen to podcast once a month. That is a hell of a lot of people. I mean, if you have a business, if you have a brand or if you just have some stuff you want to say, there are people out there who want to listen to you, and if you're a business, you need to leverage this media to communicate with your audience. It's just so powerful. People can take their podcasts everywhere, you know it's on their phone, have those kind of high-speed Bluetooth, no wire, earbuds in their ears walking around, like they're the cool guy on the block. They can listen to your podcast and so many people do, so 32% of Americans are doing this once a month, I think it's time for you to start your podcast. Moving on to number four, 67% of podcasts audiences are Support this podcast
