In today's episode, I shared the story of my apple tree. Earlier today, Dan told me he mowed my apple tree by mistake. He told me while we were outside doing some cleaning up from his yard work. He nervously said, "don't be mad at me..." Before he could finish the sentence, I looked across the yard and noticed that the little apple tree I had planted was gone. A rush of sadness hit me so hard and fast. I could not believe the wave of emotions. The little apple tree I planted in the spring had overcome the odds. Being a city with a history of killing plants in the past was the first obstacle. The second obstacle was not being planted right away and beginning to dry out. Before its untimely demise, my little tree was thriving and showed such great promise. For days, I watered the little stick in the hope that it would come back... and come back it did. During our intro, Dan and I discuss the parallels between the tree and our life. I used this incident as a teaching moment on emotions, tiny habits, consistency, and resiliency. Like my little "Appy" (the name I had given my tree), Oleg Lougheed has overcome many odds and challenges in his life.He relinquished his parents' rights at nine years old and entered the Russian orphanage. At 12 years old, he decided to be adopted into a new family, in a new country, halfway across the world, to start a new life. At 24 years old, he began his journey of helping others live the life they have always dreamed of, despite their hardships and misfortunes, by allowing them to recognize the uniqueness and worth within their own story.Uncertainty guided him during a time of tragedy and pain. Rejection affirmed his thoughts and feelings about the change that needed to take place. Fear gave Oleg the confidence to create the much-needed adoptee/foster care space. A girl desperately wants to be a professional soccer player when she grows up. Even at a young age, she puts in hours and hours of practice in her backyard. She is the first to start practice and the last to leave. Nothing will prevent her from achieving her goals. As she grows, she joins more prestigious teams and plays a game almost every weekend. She continues to train hard and maintain her other obligations, as she finishes high school. Unfortunately, she experiences an injury that puts her in the hospital. She can't play soccer anymore. However, that is not an option. She goes to physical therapy and continues to heal. She will play again. Years down the line, she is playing for a national team. Her dream came true. She hopes to inspire other little girls who have the same dream. The fact that she had the internal determination was the first step of achieving her goals. However, what were the external factors that got her to where she wanted to be? Her parents would wake up a half hour earlier than her in order to get her ready for early morning practices. They helped pay for the medical bills when she was injured. They dealt with whatever obstacle their daughter may not have seen in order to give her the best chance at success. When reviewing your personal story of growth and success, what were the factors that helped you achieve your goals? Were you as equally determined as a young girl with a dream? Are you aware of the external influences that impact your story? Tune in as Casey Berman, LaChelle Adkins, Caleb Pearson and Oleg Lougheed explore ways to identify external influences that impact your story other related topics. *** Join Casey Berman, Steve Gamlin, Nancy John, Scott Mason and many others at, “Survive to Thrive: Face Your Fears”, 3-day life changing event in Austin, TX, September 23 - 25, where you will take a deep dive into your fears and origins. https://www.overcomingodds.today/survive-to-thrive-live-face-your-fears
Fight or flight. This is the core of the sympathetic nervous system. It is so ingrained in human physiology and psychology that it can be traced to ancient humans. If a saber tooth tiger was stalking an early man, they had to know how to use their fear to either sprint as fast as they could or overcome the threat with the tools they had at their disposal. Most humans now do not have the same stresses that our ancestors had. However, the same response to threats and fears is still very much a part of our being. The challenge is that this response activates when threats are equally as minor or major. It takes the wisdom and intellect of an individual to understand what is happening in their body when a perceived threat is presented. The question then becomes, do you know when you need to face a fear or avoid it? The dilemma: Run away from fear or run to it? Join Nancy John, Casey Berman and Oleg Lougheed as they express how to successfully navigate #fear and #uncertainty.
In this episode of the Success Fundamentals podcast, Oleg Lougheed joins Brian and Kris in an honest and unfiltered conversation about race, and whether or not it affects your opportunities for success. Oleg, who hosts the Overcoming Odds podcast shares his perspective on the topic as someone who has lived in the United States and now working in Ghana, South Africa. Together, the trio reflect on the topics of racism, equality, opportunity, and different strategies on fighting racial discrimination.HIGHLIGHTSRacism can look different in other parts of the worldThe media plays a big role in instituting stereotypes Racism today often comes in hushed tones behind closed doorsVery few people want to be made accountable for their ignoranceWill the playing field ever be equal for people of color? How and when do we learn racist concepts?Collaboration is better than throwing spearsQUOTESKris: "If you see an image enough, you subconsciously start to believe it. It becomes your truth. And sometimes, you're acting in ways that you don't even think is offensive but because you've seen it so much, like if somebody walks down the street and clutches a purse because I'm walking down the street. They may not realize they're doing that, but that's the image. Who owns the images? It's these media companies owned by white men."Oleg: "In my opinion, very few people are actually willing to take responsibility for the fact that, hey, I might have been ignorant once upon a time. I might have been racist. I might have said certain things to people that offended them. People don't want to be wrong." Brian: "Race is pointless. It's like saying, you know, judging somebody by looking at how big their index finger is. It's like saying, I don't know if you'd be a good accountant. I mean, after all, look at his index finger, it's like, what does that have to literally do with anything?"Kris: "If we're trying to get to a point where everybody is equal, whatever that thought is, Collaboration would be better as opposed to throwing spears, is what I'm saying. You can get a lot more done addressing the issue, talking through the issue and moving forward, as opposed to being belligerent about it."Learn more about Oleg and his work in the links below: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/oleg-lougheed-6aa2a1b5/Podcast: https://www.overcomingodds.today/podcast-1Website: https://www.overcomingodds.today/Follow Success Fundamentals on the following links below: Website: https://www.successfundamentals.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4XCvuwxnFi5_7C6Ncm12xQLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/success-fundamentals™Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/successfundamentalspodcastInstagram: https://instagram.com/successfundamentalspodcast
We all get caught up in comparing our journeys with another's; we determine our self-worth on that comparison. It is a deadly trap to fall into. That is unless we are willing to respond to a different narrative, a different perspective, a human consciousness, but without diminishing our own unique hero's journey. Listen in as my friend Oleg Lougheed and I catch up and share his shifts in perspectives after his recent travels in Ghana.

An artist looks out on an orange pink sunset and is inspired to paint. An activist looks out on poor work conditions for daily workers and is inspired to create positive change in their lives. A man is upset with his current health and is inspired by the story of another man who changed his habits when he thought it was impossible to do so. #Inspiration can present itself in many forms. Sometimes people are inspired by others. Sometimes people inspire themselves. Sometimes they are inspired by natural events around them. Regardless of where and when inspiration may strike, it is an interesting thought to think about the core of inspiration. Where does inspiration truly originate? Simply put, where does inspiration come from? If you read a book, odds are it follows a familiar structure. It has a beginning, middle and end. It has a plot. It has characters that act as protagonists, antagonists, and foils. Maybe there is a twist. Maybe there is a low point that helps the main character grow and surpass their limitations. Either way, the story you read will only be as compelling based on the author's skill. Without the author there can be no story. If every person has a story to tell, then each person is their own author. They can tell their story however they'd like. The structure may be unique or familiar. Regardless, no story is exactly the same. When reflecting on your story, what do you focus on? Do you believe more in the plot being straightforward? Do you cast the characters intentionally? What are the elements of your story? Join Casey Berman, Caleb Pearson and Oleg Lougheed on November 19th, as they explore elements of their stories, the role they play in them, and other related topics.
What is hope? Do we all define the term similarly or do we see it differently? What are the benefits of having a hopeful attitude toward life? Tune in, as Steve Gamlin and Oleg Lougheed explore whether or not hope is simply positive thinking, the power of hopeful living and other related topics.
You are born to a middle class family. By the time you are three you have started piano lessons. By the time you are six you are instructed in swimming. As you age into high school, you are expected to have straight A's and be a member of five extracurricular activities. After high school, it is a given that you will go to a good college so that you can get a good job so that you can have high enough wages to have a house and family. Then, you retire and live out the rest of your days reminiscing about your #successful life. This is a pretty common story for those who wish to live the American Dream. This story has a pretty clear cut beginning, middle, and end with very little to no deviation from the #script. Parents may be the directors for the first part of your life, but eventually the director switches hand to a larger group: #society. Society demands that you toe the line. That you play your part perfectly so as not to disturb the status quo. However, not every individual wishes to remain on set. Some want to be directors of their own lives. These people believe they are the writer, actor, and director. Yet, is this self directed life even possible if you live in any society? Does the bubble you grow up in ultimately direct the course of your life? Is your story based on societal #expectations? Please join us, Casey Berman, Oleg Lougheed, Caleb Pearson, on October 15th at 10:45 AM CST, as we discuss this idea of societal expectations. In the meantime, feel free to share your views in the comments below.
Can you “see” #love? Can you “feel” #trust? Can you “hear” #faith? The physical world is one in which our five senses can piece together reality. You can see the table in front of you. You can feel the cup in your hand. You can hear the sound of a voice calling your name. The physical tools we have to interpret our world are a great start in true understanding. However, they fall short when they are tasked to explain the intangible. The metaphysical. The ideas floating around in our heads. Given that our senses cannot physically feel ideas such as love, trust, and faith, do they truly even exist? Do you believe in things that are not tangible? Join us this week at 11:45 AM CST, as Casey Berman and Oleg Lougheed explore the metaphysical and the ideas of #belief and #emotion.
#Legacy. Great men and women have attempted to immortalize themselves by becoming a part of #history. Some have actively sought this lofty endeavor while others were hoisted up to it by the happenstance of their circumstances. Julius Caesar is a name known to many if not all due to his ability to control the Roman Empire. Harriet Tubman is known for her heroic feat of transporting slaves through the underground railroad. Both are individuals with vastly different life experiences, but the one thing they have in common is that their names will reverberate throughout history. Where does that leave everyone else? Why are there only a select few of the billions that have walked this earth remembered and engraved in stone? More importantly why does there seem to be this need to be remembered? To have our voices carry on? Why can't one simply be content with the here and now? There are those that love you after you cease to be. The memory goes on, but eventually fades when there is no one left to carry it. Is this an eventuality to be feared? Do we need to leave something behind more withstanding? Join us on October 1st, 11:45 AM EST, as we (Scott Mason, Oleg Lougheed, Caleb Pearson and Casey Berman), explore why some desire to be remembered, what is a person's legacy, and other related topics.
Many of us have endured similar hardships throughout our lives. You never know if someone is going through something you went through. And is probably in need of help and guidance to get through something you have experienced. Do you think it is necessary to help others overcome hardships similar to your own? Are you sharing the lessons you learned through your personal life experiences with others? Tune in, September 17th, 10:45 AM CST, as Casey Berman and Oleg Lougheed, explore the purpose of lessons learned, ways to share lessons learned, and other related topics.
"I can choose to let it define me, confine me, refine me, outshine me, or I can choose to move on and leave it behind me” - John C. Maxwell. All the events in life can mean something. What do you think the events in your life represent? Do your life events define who you are today? Which events in your life do you choose to give #meaning to? Tune in, September 10th, 10:45 AM CST, as S. Scott Mason, Casey Berman and Oleg Lougheed, explore the meaning events have in our lives, ways to determine which events have meaning and not, and other related topic.
Change within ourselves is often necessary to overcome life's obstacles. Some could argue that learning from hardships is key to a successful transition. How do you respond to adverse circumstances? Do you change things about yourself while accepting things you can't change? How do you work through difficult circumstances in your life? Tune in, September 3rd, 10:45 AM CST, as Scott Mason, Steve Gamlin and Oleg Lougheed, explore ways to transition beyond one's circumstances, the challenges of transitioning between different chapters in life, and other related topic.
“You live and you learn.” But, what does that truly mean? Is learning the same as living? Is living the same as learning? What is the connection between the two? Do all of us have the capacity to learn from life circumstances? Or is learning a skill that's available only to a few of us? How do you know if you have learned something? Does everything in life have a lesson behind it? Join us August 27th, 11:45 AM EST, as we, Scott Mason, Casey Berman, Dorothy Oger and Oleg Lougheed, explore ways to learn from life circumstances, the importance of beginners mindset, and other related topics. Share what you have learned from your story so far!
Choose the type of life you want to live or someone else will choose it for you. You might have heard a statement like this many times … you might have even come across people who are either living one or the other. But, have you ever taken the time to answer such question yourself? Did you choose the life you are living or was it chosen for you? How do you know if you're living life on your own terms or in the image of what others think you should be? Do believe you have the power to choose the type of life you want to live today? What makes living life on one's own terms possible for some and not others? What choices are you making today to create your own story? Join us August 20th, 10:45 AM CST, as we, Scott Mason and Oleg Lougheed, explore ways to live life to the fullest, how choices affect the future, and other related topics.
We all go through challenges in life and business. Some resist adversity and struggle while others embrace it and then re-frame into opportunity. Oleg Lougheed shares from personal experience in this episode how to overcome their own odds and find inner-power to move forward in a positive way. Come learn to feel empowered and share your story regardless of being judged by others to find peace from within your life
It has been said that a word, uttered with a voice, created the world ... and that a voice will end it, too. True or not: that is the power of a #voice. Everyday, millions of people use their voice to communicate their needs, beliefs, and deepest desires: they even use it to change the future. Yet, how many truly understand the power of such an awesome resource? The type of resource that can create or destroy at the same exact time. The type of resource that turn war into peace … illegal into legal … agree to disagree … life into death … the list goes on and on. How do you choose to use your voice? Does your voice amplify, invite or limit someone else's voice? Let your voice be heard by joining us on August 13th at 10:45 AM CST, as we (Casey Berman, Scott Mason and Oleg Lougheed) explore the different ways voice can be used, the impact of our voice on others, the difference between having a voice and being heard, and other related topics.
“Everybody should be afraid of something.” MYTH or TRUTH? (Share your thoughts below) Thousands if not MILLIONS of conversations take place everyday about day-to-day #fears. Just as many if not more focus on ways one SHOULD NOT be afraid of those fears. ⭐️ Fear of heights

A wise person once said, “Your life is a #story of transitions. You are always leaving one chapter behind while moving on to the next.” #Transition: a concept experienced by many if not all individuals walking the face the Earth. Yet, each and every single individual may have a completely different interpretation of their meaning. To some, transitions may include getting married or starting a new relationship. To others, transitions may include changing jobs. What have been the major transitions in your life? Join us, July 23rd, 10:45 AM CST, as Scott Mason, Casey Berman, and Oleg Lougheed, explore the major transitions in their lives, what they have learned from such transitions, the difficulties certain transitions present and not others, and other related topics. The three of us may transition quickly from one major life event to another, but the one thing we will never do quickly is examine the insights you bring to this discussion.
What is the ultimate power of a single #story? Can it truly #change a life? Millions who have walked the face of the Earth have tried to crack the code … to find the perfect formula. Yet, decades later, many are still searching for it. What ultimately contributes toward creating that story or personal #narrative? Can such narrative be a blessing and a curse at the same time? Can it be so powerful that it works against you: holds you back from who you want to be? How does one know when to break away from it? Join us, July 16, 10:45 AM CST, as Scott Mason, Casey Berman, and Oleg Lougheed, discuss the role personal narrative has in the unfolding of one's life, ways to let go of stories that no longer serve you, and other related topics. The trend may continue, we may become a part of millions of others who haven't found the perfect formula for such story. But, we are willing to try, with your help, of course :)
