US Army veteran Jonathan Fisher spent his military career in aviation maintenance. When he decided to retire, he also made the decision to start his next career in the IT industry. Using SkillBridge as a launching pad to land his first role with start-up company, ByteChek, Jonathan worked as an Auditor and GRC Engineer. With financial trouble looming due to economic uncertainty, Jonathan and his coworkers unfortunately lost their jobs. However, using the power of LinkedIn and relying on his network, Jonathan was hired into a new role within a week. Jonathan is no stranger to the Lessons Learned for Vets podcast. In fact, this is his third appearance. On this episode, he brings fresh perspectives on the military transition and a realization that it continues long after retirement. Jonathan started networking and connecting with people years before he retired from the military. He reached out to organizations like Veterans2Industry, Hire Our Heroes, FourBlock and Veterati and took ownership of his transition. After making the decision to dive into the IT field, Jonathan practiced the basics through CompTIA A+ and Security+ to gain a foundational knowledge of the industry. It was only after talking with mentors that he realized his military skills gave him an edge that could help him bypass an entry-level position. His previous career in aviation maintenance had given him significant experience with risk assessment, documentation management, quality assurance auditing and problem solving – skills that lined up with Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) roles in IT. Accepting his first role with start-up, ByteChek, Jonathan reflects on the experiences that allowed him to grow professionally. Being the 7th hire for the company, Jonathan influenced the work culture and had the opportunity to influence future hires as a member of the interview panel. He enjoyed the diversity in his new workplace and learned how to become more inclusive. Jonathan played a pivotal role in the standardization and building of processes at the organization. When he lost his job due to company financial problems, Jonathan leaned into his network on LinkedIn. Within 6 days of posting his availability for a new position on LinkedIn, Jonathan interviewed and was hired into a new role. While at ByteChek, Jonathan continued to build his network with people in the IT industry. Keep your connections fresh on LinkedIn and start to build your network beyond the veteran community, even when you are happily employed. To end this episode, Jonathan urges servicemembers to make time for their families. Start building good relationships with family members and don't be afraid to reach out and seek professional help on how to be a better spouse and parent. After taking a more active role in the lives of his children, Jonathan has seen improvement in these relationships. Remember, the military transition is much more than finding a job, and it involves the whole family.Subscribe to our YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22.You can connect with Jonathan on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonfisher11/To learn more about how to navigate the military transition with your family, click here for Season 1 , Episode 8 with Ben Killoy.SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A FIVE-STAR REVIEW and share this to other veterans who might need help as they transition from the military!

You can learn a lot from the military. Today we talk to Ben Killoy, the host of the Military Veteran Dad Podcast. I was curious about what he learned from the military that could be transferred to being a successful dad. We have some great exchanges, and Ben provides a ton of wisdom. Here's a sample: A Dad's Path: What did you learn from the military that you can point to and say, this impacts how I am as a Dad? Military Dad: The most common thing when it comes to the military is learning what doesn't work as a dad. In the military, people follow orders, but your kids don't follow orders at home, or you come home, and you bark orders, or often you hold your kids to the same standard as you would at work. ---------------------------------------------------------- Find more Dad Podcasts from A Dad's Path, a website for dads!!

In this episode of The Neutral Ground Podcast, I speak with veteran Ben Killoy, host of two incredibly important podcasts: The Military Veteran Dad podcast, and The Business of Fatherhood podcast. Ben and I talk about the end of the Afghanistan War; we discuss veteran mental health and the problems with finding purpose out of the military; and, we discuss the importance of fatherhood. We even throw in a bit about Plato's allegory of the cave--and you know how much I love talking about Plato, or anything for that matter. Ben tells us his story of moving from existential crisis to podcast host and now to professional speaker. Ben helps fathers rediscover their purpose in the home and offers some valuable insights into how we can get there. This month, The Neutral Ground Podcast is going to take on a very serious topic of discussion--a pressing one: veterans and mental health. Often times, this subject can seem overwhelmingly large, especially when we take a look at the current rates of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and suicides. However, what I hope to show in my series is that there is hope. There are practical ways that we can help veterans start down a pathway of healing--and it doesn't involve politics, and it doesn't involve budgets. It just involves your time and an open ear. In the conversations to come on the podcast, we're going to speak with people like Amanda Huffman of the Women of the Military podcast and Ben Killoy of the Military Veteran Dad podcast. They will bring their own unique views on how we can help veterans make a smoother transition back to civilian life. You need not have served to find value in these coming episodes. What we're going to discuss applies to all, because, at the end of the day, these are human problems. Join us on this journey. Men in Chaos – Podcast Interview with Ben Killoy Calming the Chaos welcomes Ben Killoy, US Marine Corps Veteran, husband, father and host of two podcasts: “The Military Veteran Dad” and “The Business of Fatherhood.” He is also the author of a book called “The Five Steps to Achieving an Authentic Life.”   In this podcast, Ben talks about how men can learn to remain calm in the face of chaos. He challenges men to view Fatherhood in a whole new way by “Bringing every Dad Home.” This challenge moves beyond the deployment of soldiers back to their physical homes and families. Rather, Ben encourages all men to find a home inside themselves. By accessing a calm place within their own hearts so that they can help themselves, men can then help their families and their communities move through experiences of chaos.   The goal: To share Ben's story of chaos being a man, a father, a husband and a Marine. Ben also shares how he was able to develop tools and strategies to help himself and many other men access a calm place within their own hearts so that they can help themselves, their families and their communities move through experiences of chaos.   Introduction to Ben   Who are you now? Share your story of how you got to where you are now An overview of Chaos: “A state of disorganization, confusion, resulting from anything in our environment that throws us off balance, overwhelms or confuses us. Stereotypes (males, Dads, husbands, Military, leaders) What do men do when chaos comes? How to calm the storms? Do men get scared? (Internalizing fear) Other issues of chaos (“chaos of the heart, wired from a man”) Issues of chaos specific to men Understand and know where you are at (vs. finding the goal) Tools and strategies for men to access when in chaos GPS analogy: “We know where we are going, but without knowing where we are at, how can we start?” Part of calming the chaos is knowing where to start The legacy and the destination Ben's podcast https://www.militaryveterandad.com/podcast/ https://www.benkilloy.com/listen Ben's Website link: https://www.militaryveterandad.com/ and Benkilloy.com Listen shortcuts https://www.militaryveterandad.com/listen Book link: https://www.amazon.com/Five-Steps-Achieving-Authentic-Life-ebook/dp/B07FL9KF1T

Ordinary Sherpa is designed to inspire families to connect through adventure.  Connection being paramount as many working families are pulled in a million different directions.  And while many of us are striving for the American Dream, it's easy to lose sight of the simple everyday things that make family memories.  My guest today recognized this as he was doing all the things to align with the American Dream, but in 2014  he left college after transitioning out of the military, and reconnected with a love of leadership and a desire to become a better husband and dad.  He launched the Military Veteran Dad in 2019 and is now a stay-at-home dad and coaching spending quality time with his family while still working hard and helping others.  Ben and I met through a mastermind community and immediately connected over the demands on parents in 2020.  Ben Killoy is a Marine Veteran, speaker, coach with a focus on dads allowing them to step into their best life.  To connect with Ben Killoy          Website: benkilloy.com; freedadcourse.com Podcast: Military Veteran Dad and The Business of Fatherhood Facebook: fb.me/Benjamin.killoy              Instagram: @ben_killoy Twitter: @benkilloy Key Takeaways Stop playing chicken.  Sometimes you need to make the first move and simply say Hi.  As we emerge from the pandemic and interact with others, don't overthink a simple hello.  Be willing to take the first step into an uncomfortable adventure of connecting with others at the park.   How you lead your own life will set the bar for your child's expectations in life. You can create a lot of freedom and growth that prepares both you and your child for a stronger life. Bedtime talk is a way to do small things like tell jokes and tell stories with your kids. “I'm practicing being there for the small things so that later in life she'll bring me the big things.” Anchor memories create common experiences for kids to reflect back “What would dad do?” Most of these experiences come from doing and being, it doesn't come from a lot of work.   Adventure hack: Find an ice cream shop an hour away and point the car in that direction.  Maybe empty the garage into the car and be ready for whatever else shows up along the way.  Or find a paved path and start your scooter adventures.   Ben thought he was the worst ski instructor, but remembered kids are looking to be led by their parents, whether it be adventure or a lesson. Perfection is usually what messes up that moment. Your kids don't want or even know what perfect is, they just know and want you.    Create an opportunity for kids to be led by someone.  You want to change the world, be an example in your neighborhood. Embrace the inner-child.  Do a spontaneous adventure and think, what would a 4yo like?   For more information on the 60-day Everyday Adventure Challenge or to connect: To Register:  http://ordinarysherpa.com/challenge Follow/DM on Instagram: @ordinarysherpaJoin the Ordinary Sherpa Facebook Group to interact with other listeners.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/ordinarysherpa Subscribe to the email to be the first to know about future offers and discounts:  https://ordinarysherpa.com/subscribe/

As a father you often have to wonder, or may find yourself questioning, am I on the right path, am I doing what's right for my family, am I leaving the legacy a good father should? These questions are often a lot harder to answer for our military veterans for any number of reasons.  This week's guest,  Ben Killoy is a US Marine Corps veteran on a mission,  a mission to master leadership principles and use his passion for leadership to help dads understand who they are, develop their skills to overcome adversity, and to own their life choices to enable them to truly come home to their families.  This is done through his weekly Military Veteran Dad podcast and his daily The Business of Fatherhood podcast.Who is Ben Killoy? Ben Killoy is a U.S. Marine Veteran turned blogger, life coach, speaker, and podcaster whose mission is to bring Military Veteran Dads home to their families. He resides in Janesville, WI, with his wife and three beautiful kids. Ben went through what most transitioning veterans go through, the feeling of needing to redefine their identity outside of the structure of the military and rediscovering your passion and purpose for life. A seminar changed it all for him and allowed him to discover his passion for leadership and helping other veterans and Dads be the best parents they can. Since that seminar he has been on a mission to master leadership principles and use his passion for leadership to help dads understand who they are, develop their skills to overcome adversity, and to own their life choices to enable them to truly come home to their families. Ben’s podcast combines his own insights into his unique experiences with the military and fatherhood, along with interviews and discussions with other thought-leaders from around the world. The fact that Ben’s insights are based on his personal experiences, and the experiences of the other veterans he interviews gives credibility to his understandings. Sharing both his successes and failures brings a more heart centered approach to his podcast, enabling a deeper connection to his audience. Ben is available for speaking engagements, both online and in person, and is more than happy to share his insights on other veteran’s podcasts. Notable quote from Ben Killoy in this DTH episode:What you do on this earth is important, what you leave behind is 10 times more important. No amount of success outside the home can make up for a failure inside the home.As I do every week, I ask you, “what have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place?” The world is a better place if we are better people, and that begins with each of us leading a better life. Episode: 140 Ben Killoy - Join your hosts, David Pere and Alex Felice, with their guest Ben Killoy, as they speak about where opportunities lie in life, the essence of creating relationships, and the struggle of men to find significance at work and at home. 'A machine of ideas,' is what Alex calls Ben in this whole talk. For one, to gain clarity, Ben believes that it is crucial to heed curiosity, for they're the breadcrumbs to where one's desire intends to be in life.     As someone who helps family men find back the joy and life in being a part of the household and family after service, Ben breaks down the factors that make it hard for men to do so. He explains how the media, the culture within the military, and the taboo-like treatment of talking about struggles in the military contribute to the stigma of life after service that the majority of military men experience. To supplement the subject, he also gives tips on how men can position themselves back in the family, after service, in a way that takes everyone's pace into account.   In this episode, Ben also talks about fatherhood, marriage, and children. When it comes to parenting, he believes it's more about the parents than about the kind of kids and children involved - a thesis he finds in common on the topic of marriage. Marriage depends so much on each individual's level of maturity in life, he explains. From experience, Ben saw that most of the problems in these areas in union lie in the person's inability to grow up and calm down.   About Ben Killoy:   Ben helps high-performing men with thriving business lives, and out of balance family lives get excited about pulling into their driveaway at home again.   Outline of the episode:   [02:13] Different actions for different results. [07:58] On preference – people or things? [13:26] The elements that go against men coming home from deployment. [18:00] Where are you headed? [22:48] The resources to rewire you on parenting and marriage. [26:57] A mind's game that has been going on for ages; One hand up and one hand down. [35:24] Most people don't have a broad enough view of the American Dream. [38:07] On showing up as the friend you [41:23] "When you want new ideas, go read something old." [55:04] What people think about you doesn't have to be true. [59:10] On the misconception and misconnection with money. [1:06:15] An analogy that smacks right in the face of real estate. It was also in a super loud expo hall during PodFest Karaoke night so I had to look him up afterwards to see what he was up to. The value of a veteran dad was a very foreign (and somewhat intimidating) concept to me. I don't have kids. I've never served. How could I possibly relate to that? The journey to love yourself is a long one and this is an issue we all face. But it’s one that seems rarely talked about in the male community. We talk a lot about ego, confidence, arrogance, but self-love is often forgotten. Why might this be? To be honest, I’m not at all sure. But I do know this: Ben makes about 5/6 quotes about love (of himself and of others) that listening back blew me away. I think this is such a powerful conversation about how men can learn to love themselves DEEPLY. Not just “oh yeah I love myself” (something I myself struggle with) and I think it’s a great listen. Other topics include fatherhood, masculine and feminine energies, and the influence that Tony Robbins had on Ben's life. Working from home helped him to give himself permission to create the version of his life he wanted to be living. So here's the hard question: How can you balance working from home while still being present as a part of your family and as a parent? Ben's advice is to start with yourself. Look five years into your past and think about the resource that you wish you would have had five years ago.

Sharing both his successes and failures brings a more heart centred approach to his podcast, enabling a deeper connection to his audience. Ben is available for speaking engagements, both online and in person, and is more than happy to share his insights on other veteran’s podcasts. One thing that I find really fascinating is how much Ben talks about how important Fatherhood is. He takes an active role in influencing his children’s lives and has had so much change through starting the podcast. At one point in his life he believed no one cared about who he was and he wanted to change that. He started by making friends by saying hello to other dads at the park. And through those friendships he has created a podcast and talks about leaving a legacy for his family. We also talked a lot about how we need to allow our kids to feel emotions and not brush them aside. If we ignore our kids problems when they are little problems they won’t come to us with big problems. They will expect the same reaction as they get older because little problems to kids are just as real as big problems to us. Mentioned in this episode (affiliate links):Strong Father’s Strong Daughters by Meg MeekerWay of the Warrior Kid by Jacko WillinkMilitary Veteran Dad PodcastConnect with Ben:Instagram @Ben_KilloyInstagram @MilitaryVeteranDadTwitter @benkilloyFacebook Page @MilitaryVeteranDadThank you to my Patreon Sponsor Col Level and aboveKevin Barba

Ben Killoy is a Husband, Father, and Marine Veteran living in Milton, WI with my beautiful wife and kids.   He was an 1142 Electrical Equipment Repair Specialist in the Marine Corp (aka Generator Mechanic), served from 2003-2007, mostly in Okinawa. While there, he traveled to South Korea four times and stared down the North Korean in the DMZ. He also visited Australia, and wrapped up my time in the Corps with a trip to historical Iwo Jima. Ben was employed shortly after leaving the service, but was still not connected to his inner passion: leadership. He wandered without a clear path to follow.  It was only after he went to a seminar that changed everything and reignited his passion for Leadership.  Since then, Ben has been on a 4-year journey to master leadership principles and to understand his true capabilities to own his life and the choices he was making. When he left the Marines, he felt that he was not going to reach his full potential while serving and that it was going to hold him back. "That sounds funny saying it out loud as it not a reason most people give, but that was where my mindset was," says Ben. Currently, Ben uses his passion for leadership to help Military Veteran Dads understand who they are, develop the skills to overcome adversity and own their life and choices. He helps dads come home to their families and make the strongest legacy any of us can have, our families. Ben loves leadership because it allows him "to reach down and pull people up when others might have pushed them down."

“I can save an entire family from losing their father.” Ben Killoy is the host of Military Veteran Dad podcast. He helps Military Veteran Dads to be more connected to their families as well as their kids. He has over 65 episodes in his podcast. Did you ever experience saving someone? Saving someone from a life and death situation, from getting a failing grade, being kicked out of the company, or saving someone who’s about to suicide. Ben has entirely focused his podcast with helping military veteran dads to be intact with their families. You might probably think how Ben was able to save an entire family from losing a father when he only does podcasting.  “Be a voice, not an echo,” says Albert Einstein. A voice can entirely change someone’s life in an instant. By way of listening to others’ experiences, we learn, and by communicating, we turn our perspectives. Ben has talked continuously to military veteran dads to share not just to other military veteran dads but to all dads around the world about fatherhood. “That voice is something the world needs to hear, and if you’re holding on to a story that is super powerful, maybe even super vulnerable, you need to share it.” Our voice is so powerful that it can even hurt people if used negatively. However, it is a powerful tool to empower and inspire others. Never let yourself get eaten by your fears. Ben continuously helps people through his voice that creates changes that can be accessed by millions of people across the globe. “The world is waiting for you to go first. So that way, someone else has permission to go second. And if you go first, you can inspire someone to go second, and that is so powerful because they’ll take a step in their life that they currently are too afraid of.” “If you find a conversation worth sharing — find it, share it. Because that conversation needs to happen. It will slowly be how we start to bring the world back together.” Sharing stories, conversations, and knowledge through podcasts is such a great idea to create another idea for others. It is a tool on how we understand concepts deeper, inspire ourselves to do better, and build advocacy. Using our voice to share conversation and stories are more valuable than sitting and just listening to others. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Ben only started using his passion to help dads and now he has grown an audience and now has a clearer vision to reach out to more dads like him and hopefully journey with them to a changed life. Today we are focusing on military fathers. Before we get into the show, we thank you for serving our country and providing a safe place for us to raise our families. This episode is for you. Ben Killoy is a veteran and the host of the Military Veteran Dad Podcast and his mission is to bring every dad home. We're not just talking about being physically home. We're talking about the special challenges of being a military veteran dad. Servicemen are gone for long periods of time. The normal world continues while they're deployed, and their families learn to live without them. Once military dads return home, they lose their uniform and go from being Superman to Clark Kent overnight. It's a huge adjustment that can leave a soldier lost as to who he is and wondering how to become part of his family, workplace, and community again. Ben Killoy talks about how military fathers can readjust to family life, become great leaders in their circle of influence, and leave a lasting legacy for their kids.
