Camila Jimenez – Protecting Youth and Children from Sexual Exploitation

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2021 60:29

Episode 24 Camila Jimenez – Protecting Youth and Children from Sexual Exploitation   Today we are bringing you a special edition of This Amazing Story, on a very important issue that too often gets ignored or downplayed.   Every year in March, the Province of BC declares Stop the Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth Awareness Week, to raise awareness, and recognize the importance of supporting communities to develop prevention, education, enforcement, and intervention strategies to address the sexual exploitation of children and youth.   Sadly, the Sexual Exploitation of Youth and Children is a growing issue – with incidents of online sexual exploitation in Canada having risen by 88% just since the beginning of the pandemic.   So today we are going to talk about Sexual Exploitation – specifically the sexual exploitation of children and youth – and this is definitely not an easy conversation to have. But my guest today does an amazing job of making the topic more accessible.   Camila Jimenez, is a national leader in the issue of child and youth sexual exploitation, having worked for more than 16 years on preventing children, youth and families from being affected by this crime and supporting them when it does.   She manages Children of the Street, which provides more than 25,000 children and youth each year with the information and tools they need to keep themselves and their peers safe from sexual exploitation.  Complimenting her work on the prevention of this issue, she has dedicated much of her career to running voluntary support services for youth in a variety of communities who are being sexually exploited.   Camila is a sought-after speaker, and has been called on to present at provincial, federal and international conferences, forums and events.  She is a mom of two small children herself, so she understands the concerns of parents, and uses her in-depth knowledge of the issue to teach them how to keep their kids safe, both online and in real life.   I learned a lot during this conversation, and I think you will too. How to recognize some of the warning signs of sexual exploitation, how youth are groomed for exploitation by online predators, How to approach this difficult subject, whether you are a parent, a teacher, caregiver, or friend of someone who is at risk of being exploited – and in this digital age, that “at-risk” group includes pretty much everybody – and what you can do to help or how to find support if you or someone you know is impacted by sexual exploitation.   The critical thing I learned from Camila is how important it is just to have these difficult conversations, even if you might not know where to begin.   For more information, follow the links below:   LINKS:   Keep Kids Safe Online www.keepkidssafeonline.ca   PLEA Community Services: https://www.plea.ca/   Children of the Street https://www.childrenofthestreet.com/   Making Sense with Sam Harris, Episode #213 – The Worst Epidemic https://samharris.org/podcasts/213-worst-epidemic/   "Episode 24 Camila Jimenez – Protecting Youth and Children from Sexual Exploitation” was produced by Malcolm McMillan in association with the Vancouver Community Action Team for This Amazing Story. ©2021. Cameron Baumgartner is a student, a gymnast, a wrestler, a coach, and a top participant in Ninja competitions… From his first foray in the sport only 2 years ago, he has quickly risen to the peak level of competition, and has now taken part in two seasons of NBC's American Ninja Warrior. For those who don't know what that means, being an American Ninja Warrior has nothing to do with shooting blow darts in the dead of night, having kung fu fights on moonlit rooftops, or committing even mild espionage. These Ninjas are incredible athletes who combine the physical strength and explosive power of a hungry lion, with the speed, agility, and grace of a flying squirrel. Their goal is to overcome a set of insane obstacles in their path, and to do it faster than their opponents… Cameron makes these obstacles look too easy. Maybe it's because from a young age, he was trained by fate to overcome obstacles set in his path. Maybe it's the incredible support of his family that helped him get to where he is now, or maybe he was driven by some kind of inner force that propelled him over and above what even he thought he could achieve. I suspect that heaps of intense training and long hours at the gym have something to do with it too. Episode 18. Kryshan Randel and Ryan Alexander McDonald – Farewell, Treehouse Manor My guests today are Kryshan Randel and Ryan McDonald. Ryan and Kryshan are roommates at a home that has become legendary amongst a certain cohort of Vancouver creative minds and party-goers. It's a secretive Mecha of the creative arts that has been shrouded in mystery and strange rumours that only get wilder with each retelling. Few people have heard the name of this home, and even fewer know the full extent of the finely-tuned chaos that has existed within it's walls. But today, we will hear the amazing story of Treehouse Manor from two of it's inhabitants, who are sadly in the process of a renoviction. Yes, Treehouse Manor will soon be torn down to rubble to make way for more boring townhouses where nothing this cool will ever happen again... Kryshan Randel lives and breathes film. He has been passionate about film-making since he was a baby. Kryshan is a film director and instructor, who has directed dozens of short films, with some of these touring the festival circuit worldwide. His short films have appeared at Sitges, Fantastic Fest, and Fantasia, and have screened on Amazon Instant Video, Movieola, and the Sundance Channel. Kryshan was at the helm for four episodes of the web series, Libelle, the Directors Guild of Canada's Just Watch Us, campaign, and commercials for the smartphone app, Shotlister. Kryshan also does freelance shooting and editing for clients such as BBC America, Netflix, Legendary Pictures, Universal Studios, and Disney. Ryan McDonald is an actor, director, producer, writer, cinematographer, photographer, editor, projection designer, sometimes fight choreographer, occasional slow-motion animator, and life long party thrower. He is like a Swiss Army Knife of film and media skills, a MacGyver when it comes to problem solving, and his leadership has been likened to that of Jean Luc Picard. As a member of the Art Left Creative Group, Ryan has created content for clients such as: Telus, Bard on the Beach, Studio 58, The Vancouver International Film Festival, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.   LINKS: Treehouse Manor on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/treehousemanor Treehouse Manor on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/treehousemanor/ Kryshan Randel: https://kryshanrandel.com/ Ryan McDonald: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3692641/ Art Left Creative: https://www.artleftcreative.com/ Art Left Creative on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/artleftcreative/   ----more---- For more information or to join the conversation, visit thisamazingstory.com Or send mail to host, Malcolm McMillan. For almost 20 years, David has been making functional, playable works of art, taking branches or staves of locally harvested wood and turning them into musical horns – some small and lightweight, and some way bigger than a tuba. He performs with these hand-made instruments in his band, The Legion Of Flying Monkeys, and he teaches free wood carving classes out of his studio in MacLean Park, Vancouver BC.  I met David a couple years ago, and we instantly bonded over our matching handlebar moustaches, and our mutual love for the absurd. Andrew is also a teacher at an alternative school – hear about why there is no such thing as a “Bad Kid”, and learn how Andrew helps kids who most people have given up on to achieve the success and happiness that everybody wants in life. Also in this episode, putting on a Storm Trooper costume to help sick kids, why asking for help can be the bravest thing you can do, and how facing his trauma instead of brushing it under the rug has helped Andrew overcome a lifetime of anxiety and negative thought patterns. Josh McInnes is a marine biologist who got his first job studying Killer Whales, or Orcas as some like to call them, at the age of 12, when he became ship's naturalist for a whale watching outfit on the Northern end of Vancouver Island. Since then, his fascination with Killer Whales has led him to study this apex predator from California to Alaska. And with all he has learned about Killer Whales, it seems there are still more questions than answers, which is probably a good thing for Josh, because it means that he'll have many more voyages ahead of him as he continues to try and understand these beautiful and iconic sea mammals. In this episode you'll get to know Josh and his story, learn all about orca behaviour, how they hunt, and where the best places in BC are to spot Orcas. You'll also learn why the name “Orca” isn't really that much more flattering than the name “Killer Whale”, and much more. Episode 10 Cameron Reid – Speaking from a Quiet Place in the Woods This week is the tenth episode, so I thought it would be fun to do a throw back to the very first interview I conducted for this show. Cameron Reid is a really good old friend, and since he and his wife moved to a small town called Black Creek, I don't see him too much. He is a teacher, a sort of jack-of-all-trades, and a natural born philosopher. We recorded this episode way back in February, so I need to put a couple things in context – We recorded this together, in person, at a time when that was still perfectly normal and COVID-19 wasn't really on the cultural radar yet. When Cam briefly mentions protests, he is not referring to the current protests around police brutality and Black Lives Matter, but to the Pipeline protests that were happening all across Canada back at the time of recording. And a quick note to say we are talking very quietly during this episode, because Cam's one-year-old son was napping in the next room over. It gives the interview sort of a close and intimate feel, which I like, but it might sound funny if you didn't know the context. This episode is really more of a conversation than a story, and I'll leave it up to you to decide whether or not it's even all that amazing. Cam is definitely an amazing guy though, and I think that comes across in the interview. Hope you enjoy the show!   SOME RELEVANT LINKS: L.A. Episode 8 – Michelle Kunimoto – Discovering Exoplanets and the Search for Extraterrestrial Life   The question, “Are we alone in the universe?”, has inspired philosophers and scientists since time immemorial. When we look up at the starry sky, one almost can't help but wonder, is there anybody out there?   Michelle Kunimoto isn't just asking that question, she is busy doing her small part in the search for the answer. And she is this week's guest on This Amazing Story.   Michelle Kunimoto discovered 17 exoplanets by scouring over the data from the Kepler Space Telescope as part of her grad project at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Previously, she had found four other exoplanets as an undergrad, an achievement that landed her on the Forbes 30 Under 30 List for Science at the age of only 23.   Inspired at an early age to pursue astronomy when her Dad introduced her to the original Star Trek TV Series, Michelle has now completed her PhD in Astronomy at UBC, and will soon be travelling to MIT in Boston where she will be fulfilling a childhood dream of working with NASA.   In this episode Michelle tells us what it takes to find exoplanets, how she became interested in studying exoplanets in the first place, how you too can become an exoplanet researcher right from the comfort of your own home, what the future might hold for space exploration, and much more.   This episode is a great chance to learn a bit about astronomy, and Michelle does an amazing job of putting some complicated ideas into simple language that anybody can understand.     SOME RELEVANT LINKS   CBC Article on Michelle Kunimoto, March 1, 2020 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/ubc-astronomy-student-finds-17-new-possible-planets-1-may-have-water-1.5481900   Global News Story, Feb 28, 2020 https://globalnews.ca/video/6611938/ubc-graduate-student-michelle-kunimoto-explains-interstellar-exoplanet-discovery   Global News Story, Jan 7, 2017 https://globalnews.ca/video/3167384/ubc-grad-michelle-kunimoto-named-to-forbes-30-under-30-list   Forbes 30 Under 30, 2017 https://www.forbes.com/30-under-30-2017/science/#1160533827fa   Vancouver Sun Article on the first 4 planets discovered by Kunimoto, Jan 15, 2020 https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/ubcs-rising-astronomy-star-michelle-kunimoto-seeks-distant-worlds   Global News Story on the first four exoplanets, May 30, 2016 https://globalnews.ca/news/2731189/ubc-astronomy-student-discovers-4-new-planets-beyond-our-solar-system/   Planet Hunters TESS https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/nora-dot-eisner/planet-hunters-tess/about/research   Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes https://archive.stsci.edu/    UBC Department of Physics and Astronomy https://www.phas.ubc.ca/   Jaymie Matthews at UBC https://www.phas.ubc.ca/users/jaymie-matthews   ----more---- For more information or to join the conversation, visit thisamazingstory.com Or send mail to host, Malcolm McMillan. Episode 7. C.M. Kosemen This week I sat down with a Turkish artist, historian, author, and speculative evolutionary biologist whose imagination will take you into previously uncharted realms of thought. C.M. “Memo” Kosemen is a creative genius who is well known for his paleo-art, depicting dinosaurs and other extinct animals with an eye to revealing a little more of the true nature of these extinct beings from a bygone era. Memo is a huge fan of engaging in speculative thought experiments – He's not afraid to jump down the rabbit hole and see how deep it goes with a free and open mind, while still managing to be grounded in a scientific rationality that informs his art, as much as it seems at odds to it at first glance. He is also a highly esteemed historian and author, who has helped shed light on some of the untold stories of his home country, as well as other parts of the world. I had a really fun time talking with Memo, and we touch on surreal art, strange creatures, evolution, life on other worlds, cryptozoology, dinosaurs, the landscape and culture of Turkey, and what inspires C.M. This week, Sam Miller joined me in the Physically Distant Studio.  Sam Miller is an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, singer, and producer. He has released two full-length studio albums - In One Place at a Time in 2019, and You Need To Hear It in 2014. He has also travelled a lot and been a part of countless musical projects since first calling himself a professional musician over a decade ago. Recently Sam released two new full-length albums, featuring the work of Johann Sebastian Bach (Bach – Human Arpeggiator) and Eric Satie (Phonometographer). These albums give us a glimpse at his musical dexterity, easily jumping from Grunge Americana, to polished synth-filled ballads, to classical music. Sam Miller is a rambling man who is finally finding his place. In this episode, he tells us about his creative process, tells some of his life story, and let's us in on what he is working on now. He has not wasted a minute of his time sheltering in place in Sonoma California, and instead has used all this “down time” to embark on a whole slew of creative projects.     ----more----  Sam Miller on Bandcamp https://sammiller.bandcamp.com/music  Sam Miller on Instagram @sammillermusic Sam Miller on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXKAdgwBUbrLop5X40YDd_g Sam Miller on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/artist/6elA7dYpPdk9p909LASGmb?si=AvQfEuXaTx6bzLEdUGmF7A Sam Miller on YouTube Music https://music.youtube.com/channel/UC02rTpzp1-hmsIRXFImLjvQ Write up in Music Mecca https://www.google.ca/amp/s/musicmecca.org/folk-songwriter-sam-miller-releases-silver-and-gold/%3famp Write up in The Other Side Reviews https://www.theothersidereviews.com/track-of-the-day-sam-miller-blood-moon-honeymoon/ Write up in American Pancake https://www.americanpancake.com/2020/03/blood-moon-honeymoon-by-sam-miller-with.html?m=1 Bootleg Sessions Vol. 2 Sam Miller's fixed gear bike tricks https://youtu.be/QJ-HXBumcLM All songs used with permission by Jenny Invert Records: The Steady Flow of Time, by Grand Canyon 2010 Blood Moon Honeymoon, by Sam Miller 2020 Ava Maria, composed by JS Bach, performed by Sam Miller 2020 Je te Veux, composed by Erik Satie, performed by Sam Miller with Laura Weinbach 2020   ----more---- For more information or to join the conversation, visit thisamazingstory.com Or send mail to host, Malcolm McMillan. E005 Dr. Richard Mathias on COVID-19 and Metabolic Syndrome

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2020 62:08

This week I had a chance to chat with Dr. Richard Mathias, an epidemiologist with 40 years of experience in public health and the management of communicable diseases. Richard has worked for Health Canada as a field epidemiologist in Newfoundland, was the Provincial Epidemiologist for Saskatchewan from 1977-1980, the Provincial Epidemiologist for Communicable Diseases in B.C. from 1980-1983, and was a Professor at UBC's School of Population and Public Health from 1983-2013. During that time his main research was in the area of communicable disease control and the application of public health principles. Although he has now been retired for five years, Richard has been following the research on COVID-19 very closely, and many of the people who are now managing the crisis in B.C. were originally trained by Dr. Mathias and his team at UBC. This episode is more of a question and answer format than the regular emphasis placed on storytelling. Since beginning this podcast I have been struggling with what to do in the face of the global pandemic. Until now, I have been wanting to give people an escape from the regular news media, and even many podcasts that have switched almost 100% to covering the Coronavirus as it progresses day by day. We'll be back to the escapist storytelling next week. But right now, it's time to shine the light on this virus, and Richard very gracefully agreed to answer some of my questions on COVID-19, just 2 days before B.C. moves into Phase Two of restrictions, and some greater economic activity and social gathering will be allowed. We also debunk some of the big Coronavirus myths that have been floating around online, and Richard argues for evidence-based solutions in the face of snake-oil shucksters and conspiracy theorists. In addition, Richard has done a great deal of research on high fat, low carbohydrate diets, and their relation to overcoming metabolic syndrome – which presents as a collection of ailments, including obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and dementia. We talk about Metabolic Syndrome and why those who have it are more likely to have a worse outcome when COVID-19 strikes, or in the face of other health issues. Contrary to what we've been told all or most of our lives, Richard and a growing number of health experts now believe we have been wrong to vilify fat in our diets. Instead, it is sugar that is the cause of so many health problems facing people today. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot too in recording this episode. Hopefully you will find some value in it too.   ----more----  Here are some relevant LINKS: UBC School of Population and Public Health https://www.spph.ubc.ca/ BC's Response to COVID-19 https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/emergency-preparedness-response-recovery/covid-19-provincial-support B.C. His immaculately crafted shots have wowed audiences and won awards since 2010. Most recently he has been working with BBC Earth and an unnamed streaming platform as a camera operator. But you have probably seen some of his own very popular documentaries. In the 2010 film, The Clean Bin Project, Grant and his wife Jen strive to produce zero waste – that's no garbage at all – for a whole year, and they film the process, including arguments and hard bits. The film launched them into the world of conferences and school appearances, and has been screened all over the world. Four years later, the couple was back with Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story, in which they survive by eating only garbage, for 6 months! They not only survived, but thrived with literally tons more food than they knew what to do with available within a short drive from their home.  And the 2018 documentary, This Mountain Life follows a 60 yr old mother and her daughter as they become only the second team ever to complete the entire Coast Mountain Traverse from Squamish, B.C. to Skagway Alaska, interspersed with some really cool stories of other folks who live or work in the rugged mountains of B.C.
