Today we're celebrating all the cool stuff people are good at, in our own version of “Canada's Got Talent.” When Rick Ammazzini sees a locked safe without a key, he doesn't see an impenetrable door, he sees an opportunity to test his skills as an amateur safe cracker. For Rick, it's not about discovering potential riches inside, it's about unlocking a portal to a specific time in history. The newest member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is also their youngest. 17-year-old Julin Cheung shares his thoughts on being labelled a prodigy, and what it really takes to be talented. Tanya Ryan is a talented singer-songwriter from Alberta who's won country music ‘Rising Star' awards and performed at Calgary Stampede. But after 12 years of trying to make it in the music industry, Tanya is hanging up her guitar for good. She tells us about coming to terms with the fact that talent isn't always enough.Don Vickers of Sydney Mines, NS says he has a horrible memory, but he still managed to break a world record in the competitive world of memory sports. And Paul Anthony's "Talent Time!" is a long-running live show in Vancouver with a very broad definition of what it means to be talented. A seniors' vaudeville troupe, a kids' Kung Fu class, a rabbit agility club – all have a stage here. Paul tells Ify why he doesn't want to put the notion of ‘talent,' or his show, in a box.

Steven sings some amazing songs and talks about The BareNakedLadies, Trans-Canada Highwaymen, the creative process, blowing up your life, breaking up with your partners, repairing your life, finding freedom working for yourself, being a self starter, zoom shows, Brian Wilson, Yoko Ono, band camp, and getting pelted with mac & cheese. Bio: Over the last thirty-five years, Steven Page has established himself as one of the most recognizable and enduring voices in music. The release of his latest album, Excelsior, shows that he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Since its release, Steven has toured Canada, The US and the UK with The Steven Page Trio, and has performances planned well into 2024. As a co-founder, vocalist and songwriter for Barenaked Ladies, Steven sang and wrote classics like “Brian Wilson,” “If I Had A Million Dollars,” “What A Good Boy,” “It's All Been Done” and many more. With the band, he sold over 15 Million albums and scored multiple Junos, Billboard Music Awards, SOCAN awards, Gemini Awards and two Grammy nominations. After leaving the band in 2009, Steven embarked on a solo career that has produced five solo albums, including 2022's Excelsior, and has seen him tour worldwide, from folk festivals to cabarets and theatres, all the way to packed arenas on his recent string of dates opening for rock legends The Who.  Steven performs in many configurations, from solo to full band with horn section, but, since 2016, he has been playing most often with his pals in The Steven Page Trio, Craig Northey of Vancouver legends Odds on guitar, and Kevin Fox on cello. The trio configuration provides the right amount of portability, intimacy and power to fill just about any venue imaginable. Steven has performed arrangements of some of his best-loved songs from his long career with orchestras including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony, Symphony New Brunswick and has more symphony shows on the horizon in the next two years. A passionate mental health advocate, Steven has been in demand as a public speaker since 2011, sharing his own story with audiences across North America. In 2018, Steven was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame with his former bandmates in Barenaked Ladies, at the Juno Awards Ceremonies in Vancouver. In 2020, when work on the musical he wrote with playwright Daniel MacIvor for Canada's Stratford Festival, Here's What It Takes, was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Steven began performing weekly livestream concerts over Zoom, Steven Page Live From Home. These Live From Home shows, sometimes selling 1000 tickets at a time, cultivated a tightly-knit community of music fans from all over the world, and kept them feeling connected when it was most needed. Steven continues to perform Live From Home shows on Saturdays when he's not on the road, with the 100th episode planned for early in 2023.  The Governor-General's Performing Arts Awards approached Steven in 2021 about writing a song as a surprise tribute to his friend, Ryan Reynolds, and the result was “Canada Loves You Back,” a song as poignant, humourous and Canadian as the actor it honours. Steven is a frequent collaborator with Toronto's Art of Time Ensemble, made up of some of Canada's best classical, jazz and pop musicians. With them, he released an album of covers, A Singer Must Die, in 2009, and also appears on their Sgt. Pepper and Songs of Leonard Cohen albums. Along with Chris Murphy (Sloan), Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness), and Craig Northey (Odds), Steven makes up a quarter of The Trans-Canada Highwaymen, four lead singers of classic Canadian bands, whose first album of Canadian covers is set to be released in the fall of 2023.

Better than ever: Lovefest 2023

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Lovefest will be returning to Cortes Island on August 12.  “Lovefest just has its own momentum. It exists because the community wants it. There's nothing political about it. We get to enjoy some good music, have fun together and just be with each other as a community,” explained Rex Weyler, one of the key organizers.
Today's program consists of an interview with Rex, interspersed with songs from three of the acts coming to this year's Lovefest.
We'll start the music off with Adonis Peuentes, the first band that Rex mentioned in our interview.
RW: “We have five years of experience, so we're getting a little better at it. We've got a great team. Soma Feldmar, Amy Robertson, Rick Bockner, myself and others are involved every year in putting it on. We have 50 volunteers, so all of that collected experience. Lonnie Taylor's been helping from day one and Dancing Wolf does the decoration. He's great at that.”
“We have the Community Action Bus, which we had last year for the first time ever and the Community Action Bus comes from Victoria.  It'll circle Cortes all day long, picking people up, bringing them and taking them home from the event. That really cuts down on the necessity for cars.”
“That's what I love about Lovefest. It's evolving in a really nice direction because people are having a good time and want to contribute. I think we do a better job every year.”  “What's really special to me about this year is that we just have some great bands that have not been to Cortes yet.The Adonis Puentes Cuban band is going to be a killer.  A not new band that's not been here before is also the Unfaithful Servants from Victoria.”
“Pierre Schreyer and Adam Dobray were here last year and they were just such a hit fiddle player and guitar player. They're just so good  and played great fiddle dance music. People loved them, wanted them back, so they're coming back.”

RW: Our friends from Quadra Island, Willow, are a wonderful singing group. They were here in 2019. I love them, they're just fantastic.
Then a lot of our local favourites: Josephine Simpson grew up here; Michael Keith; Jemma Hicken,  Wiley Ferguson will bring his band. Wiley, by the way, had one of his compositions accepted by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.  Wiley's a great musician, great guitar player; Brenda Hanson is going to play. A new singer songwriter we've never had before. Marianne Grittani will be here. Many of the people on Cortes know Jesse Roy; Heather Wolfe and her band.

Greg Osoba/ CKTZ News - BC composer Wylie Ferguson showcased a new composition with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) this spring. Ferguson's nearly six minute piece is titled "Broken Earth" and the VSO played his composition on May 30. The 30-year-old composer is very pleased with how it turned out; he describes the composition as "monster music, like something out of a Godzilla movie." He adds that most of his works lean towards the "dark side." Ferguson, who is based in Nanaimo and whose parents live on Cortes Island, applied last September to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's composition mentorship program. He was accepted and began the seven month program last October. Ferguson studied and taught at the Squamish Academy of Music and studied composition at Capilano University in North Vancouver. Ferguson says he's influenced by a number of contemporary composers in both the jazz and classical fields, most notably Frank Zappa. With his VSO mentorship now complete, Ferguson hopes word will get out about his compositions and he will be sought out for commissions. In the meantime he continues composing and teaching as well as playing in a number of musical ensembles.

But coming up, you're going to find us on the red carpet because I have another fabulously exciting guest here with me today. It is Kyle Fostner, executive director of the Vancouver International Film Festival. All you film buffs will want to know this man because he knows everything there is to know about the upcoming festival. Kyle, welcome to our show.  KYLE: Thank you. Great to be here. CAT: Now, you've probably had a really hectic few weeks here. As the new Executive Director, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF). KYLE: Sure, thank you. It's true that my background is in music. I have always known that I wanted to be in the arts. I spent my 20s on the art side of things, making video art but also as an aspiring musician. I lived and worked in Montreal and released records, toured and did that whole business. Then I found myself working in music venues and worked my way up from the very bottom as a handyman to the general manager. I did this for about six to eight years before my partner and I moved out here to be closer to her family. When we arrived, I didn't want to work in music any longer. So I dabbled in film production, and that opened the doors wider. I started as a venue manager for VIFF and quite literally worked my way back up again. This is the first full-tilt role at the festival since taking over, so I'm both excited and terrified.  CAT: Well congratulations on everything. It takes a lot to get a festival like this off the ground, and there are so many people behind the scenes. And that's something I really love about the Vancouver International Film Festival. There isn't just an emphasis on the red carpets and the actors and stars - there's a lot of focus on writers, directors, musicians and more. It is about the fundamentals. It's about all the people who work in the industry.   KYLE: The days of festivals being about ‘just going to the movies' are over, to be honest. I think that we all spent the past few years getting through periods of isolation through streaming films, and we were able to do it on our terms. We've all got subscriptions to the many streaming services out there. So, you know, binge-watching is an option that's available to everyone in their lives all the time. What VIFF offers is a deeper experience. The world is full of film festivals of all shapes and sizes, so it's really important as a festival planner to define yourselves by your strengths.  From the written word to the visual image to the sound behind it, film is a creative decision. We are not concerned with celebrity and are not concerned with the endless red carpets and the sponsors. We're an audience-first festival. We're here for the community. CAT: And there's so much inclusiveness here at the Vancouver festival. There's diversity and variety and so much to take in. There are talks, speakers, and even a night with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performing live. Tell us a little bit more about these features. KYLE: So the ‘Talks' series is one that I'm really proud of. It's the bridge between industry and the general public. It's for people who want to explore film culture beyond just the simple cinematic experience. The series is a way to find our favourite creators from around the world and then connect them with Vancouver audiences. We had a free online talk called ‘With Dean Fleischer Camp', who's the director and leader of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, a 2021 comedy. It started as a viral video, and it just went wild. It's an adorable heart-wrenching animation of this little tiny shell with a single eye and these tiny shoes and the adventures it goes on.  And then we have the industry conversations.

From bucket lists to building community, Bea and her partner Dana Harvey envisioned a place to share and sit in circle, sharing their psychedelic journeys with like-minded women. Fast forward one year to the inaugural Sisters in Psychedelics Summit, we're sitting in circle with Bea to get the tea on their psychedelic journey! From preparation, to the journey itself to the lifelong integration of learning, we talk coaches, trip sitters, the history of MDMA, Ketamine Clinics and so mush(room) more. Whether you are for, against or in between on the psychedelic conversation, this one's about exploring the grey space that drug and psychedelic culture live in. About Our Guest: Bea ("Bee") Chan is a female BIPOC founder, community builder and mental health advocate. After leaving her corporate career, she found herself rediscovering her ancestral roots in Asia, where she stumbled on marketing, entrepreneurship and plant medicine. SIP is a grassroots community and platform that empowers people to elevate the divine feminine and other underrepresented voices in the evolution of the psychedelic ecosystem. Organically growing from 15 strangers to over 450 sisters around the world, they're just about ready to debut their gender-inclusive, inaugural SIP Summit on Sept 10 and invite all to join! About the Conference: Sponsored by Numinus, Conscious Mind Clinic and several others, the inaugural SIP Summit is happening on Sept 10 at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra with an epic full moon after party at a private residence! DescriptionOccasionally, I am going to release a bonus interview episode for your listening pleasure. For this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Bekah Simms who is the outgoing General Manager for the Canadian League of Composers. She is also a truly innovative composer in her own right. We chatted all about the League as well as Bekah's compositional process and what she's currently working on. Enjoy!Bekah on SoundCloud | Ghost Songs By Bekah Simms on BandcampAbout Bekah SimmsThe varied output of JUNO and Gaudeamus Award-nominated composer Bekah Simms has been heralded as “cacophonous, jarring, oppressive — and totally engrossing!” (CBC Music), “tough, even gutsy...with a sure sense of original and vibrant colours” (Vancouver Sun), and lauded for its "sheer range of ingenious material, expressive range and sonic complexity" (The Journal of Music.) Propelled equally by fascination and terror toward the universe, her work is often filtered through the personal lens of her anxiety, resulting in nervous, messy, and frequently heavy musical landscapes. Foremost among her current compositional interests is quotation and the friction between recognizability and complete obfuscation.Bekah hails from St. John's, Newfoundland and is currently Toronto-based. Her music has been widely performed across Canada, in over a dozen American states, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Austria, Lithuania, the UK, and Russia. Commissioning ensembles include some of the top interpreters of contemporary music in both Canada and internationally, such as Crash Ensemble, Eighth Blackbird, l'Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Thin Edge New Music Collective, Esprit Orchestra, Continuum Contemporary Music, Ensemble Télémaque, Ensemble Paramirabo, and Duo Concertante. Upcoming commissions include new works for Crash, But What About?, New Music Concerts, and more.About Steven (TCMM Host)Steven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. He creates a range of works, with an emphasis on the short-form genre—his muse being to offer the listener both the darker and more satiric shades of human existence. For this week's interview, we talk with Mr. Brian Wendel, principal trombone of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia. He is one of the newest voices on the classical music scene, but has wasted no time in demonstrating that he's a force to be reckoned with. Due to his pedagogical maturity and outstanding command over the instrument, Brian is an inspirational figure for many young trombonists hoping to launch an orchestral career. His enthusiasm for teaching motivated students and an active presence on social media have proven to be invaluable assets in passing on his knowledge, and we enjoyed hearing his unique perspectives on facilitating personal growth and beginning a career in music. In this talk, we hear about Brian's time studying with Norman Bolter and Joe Alessi in his early years, his experience taking auditions and what it felt like to finally achieve his dream of winning an orchestra position, and detailed specifics on how students should be approaching their practice. -- Transition music: Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64: VI. Episode 18. Kryshan Randel and Ryan Alexander McDonald – Farewell, Treehouse Manor My guests today are Kryshan Randel and Ryan McDonald. Ryan and Kryshan are roommates at a home that has become legendary amongst a certain cohort of Vancouver creative minds and party-goers. It's a secretive Mecha of the creative arts that has been shrouded in mystery and strange rumours that only get wilder with each retelling. Few people have heard the name of this home, and even fewer know the full extent of the finely-tuned chaos that has existed within it's walls. But today, we will hear the amazing story of Treehouse Manor from two of it's inhabitants, who are sadly in the process of a renoviction. Yes, Treehouse Manor will soon be torn down to rubble to make way for more boring townhouses where nothing this cool will ever happen again... Kryshan Randel lives and breathes film. He has been passionate about film-making since he was a baby. Kryshan is a film director and instructor, who has directed dozens of short films, with some of these touring the festival circuit worldwide. His short films have appeared at Sitges, Fantastic Fest, and Fantasia, and have screened on Amazon Instant Video, Movieola, and the Sundance Channel. Kryshan was at the helm for four episodes of the web series, Libelle, the Directors Guild of Canada's Just Watch Us, campaign, and commercials for the smartphone app, Shotlister. Kryshan also does freelance shooting and editing for clients such as BBC America, Netflix, Legendary Pictures, Universal Studios, and Disney. Ryan McDonald is an actor, director, producer, writer, cinematographer, photographer, editor, projection designer, sometimes fight choreographer, occasional slow-motion animator, and life long party thrower. He is like a Swiss Army Knife of film and media skills, a MacGyver when it comes to problem solving, and his leadership has been likened to that of Jean Luc Picard. As a member of the Art Left Creative Group, Ryan has created content for clients such as: Telus, Bard on the Beach, Studio 58, The Vancouver International Film Festival, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.   LINKS: Treehouse Manor on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/treehousemanor Treehouse Manor on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/treehousemanor/ Kryshan Randel: https://kryshanrandel.com/ Ryan McDonald: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3692641/ Art Left Creative: https://www.artleftcreative.com/ Art Left Creative on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/artleftcreative/   ----more---- For more information or to join the conversation, visit thisamazingstory.com Or send mail to host, Malcolm McMillan. Richard Bell and Face2Face host David Peck talk his new film Brotherhood, dignity and self sacrifice, putting others before ourselves, rites of passage, real boys and toxic masculinity. Trailer The film be will be available on the Super Channel in March 2020.Synopsis: Based on the harrowing true story that made newspaper headlines across North America in the 1920s, Brotherhood is a taut survival drama that feels timely and modern in this era of the very real Boy Crisis. A bristling piece of Canadian history, that is a clarion call for a return to Nature, as wonderful and lethal as it may be. A band of teenaged boys arrive at Long Point Camp on sprawling Balsam Lake for the ultimate Canadian experience: two weeks of games, kite-making, lacrosse, sing-a-longs, marshmallow roasts, canoeing, swimming and adventure. Great War veterans, Arthur and Robert have their own approach to educating and nurturing these boys who are pugnacious with raw personalities. Arthur and Robert set off across the lake in a thirty-foot Indian war canoe with the unofficial band of brother’s leader Waller and ten of his companions. When they encounter a freak summer storm and are capsized in the middle of the churning lake, the brotherhood's holiday descends into a soul-shuddering fight for survival. Only four will survive.About the Director: Richard wrote and directed Eighteen, shot in twenty days and made with only $800, 000, it co-starred acting titans Ian McKellen and Alan Cumming, and featured a score by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. It hopscotched the world at film festivals and was broadcast on City TV and Movie Central and the Movie Network. Bell was nominated for a Genie Award for co-writing the song “In a Heartbeat”, with composer Bramwell Tovey. Bell adapted the teen novel Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet by Joanne Proulx and penned a television pilot for Brightlight Pictures, a ‘prairie noir’ based on the fleet of Russell Quant detective novels by Anthony Bidulka. Bell got his start in the industry by writing and directing the micro-budgeted indie Two Brothers. It was shot for $545.00 and went on to gross $150,000 on DVD. Richard is a graduate of Studio 58, the only conservatory-style theatre training program in Western Canada. He is an alumnus of the TIFF Talent Lab, the Praxis Centre for Screenwriters’ Screenwriting Lab, and the CFC’s Writers’ Workshop at the Whistler Film Festival. Richard recently co-executive produced Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet for producer Kim Roberts. In this episode, I discuss with solo violinist Arnaud Sussmann.  He elaborates on the mindsets and strategies to adopt when working on sound quality, the importance of having a strong concept of phrasing and of bow distribution in musicality, the importance of creating fluency in his playing and how he achieves it, the importance of purpose in our practice, warming up during busy periods, the value of recording ourselves when we practice, and why he believes it's important to work hard. MORE ABOUT ARNAUD SUSSMAN: Website: http://arnaudsussmann.com/ YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/violinice Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/arnaudsussmannviolin/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/arnaudsussmann/ Boris Garlitsky: http://www.talentmusicmasters.it/boris-garlitsky   Winner of a 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Arnaud Sussmann has distinguished himself with his unique sound, bravura and profound musicianship. Minnesota's Pioneer Press writes, “Sussmann has an old-school sound reminiscent of what you'll hear on vintage recordings by Jascha Heifetz or Fritz Kreisler, a rare combination of sweet and smooth that can hypnotize a listener. His clear tone [is] a thing of awe-inspiring beauty, his phrasing spellbinding.” A thrilling young musician capturing the attention of classical critics and audiences around the world, Arnaud Sussmann has appeared with the American Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, New World Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Paris Chamber Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Further solo appearances have included a tour of Israel and concerts at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Dresden Music Festival in Germany and at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. More at https://www.philosophytalk.org/shows/praise-love-platos-symposium-meets-bernsteins-serenade. Plato’s Symposium is arguably the most memorable philosophical work ever written on the subject of love. It is also the inspiration for Leonard Bernstein’s gorgeous violin concerto, the Serenade. What would Plato think of Bernstein’s Serenade, especially given his criticism of art and poetry? Is Bernstein more interested in what one of Plato’s drunken characters calls “vulgar love”? Or is he inspired by Platonic love – the highest form of love? How does Bernstein explore these themes through his music? In this special episode featuring violin virtuoso Anne Akiko Meyers and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, John and Ken talk to Brandi Parisi from All Classical Portland radio about love – its nature, its origin and its purpose – and music.

Since 1998 Krausas has directed, composed for, and produced multi-media events in Los Angeles that incorporate her works with dance, acrobatics and video. Since March 2008, The Local Grain Revolution series has been following the evolution of Canada's first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project for grain. A total of 180 members and one business from the communities of Nelson and Creston, British Columbia, are blazing a trail towards a local grain economy. Kootenay Harvest Revival II On this Part V of the series, we explore the second in a three-part series of recordings from the Kootenay Harvest Revival - an event hosted by Deconstructing Dinner, the Nelson-Creston Grain CSA and All Seasons Café. The two-day event was held to celebrate the CSA's monumental harvest of grain and to use the success of the project as a "catalyst for a local food revolution." Day 1 of the event heard from a series of speakers who shared the history of food production in the Kootenay regions of British Columbia. By exploring what was once possible to grow and produce in the area, it was hoped that the event would inspire visions of what the soil is currently able to provide both now and into the future. Certainly the Grain CSA is one of those projects unearthing the potential of the region. On this Part II of the Revival recordings, we hear from author and farmer Luanne Armstrong who spoke on finding one's sense of self through place. "In this day in age, we need to think about where we live, not only where we live and how we connect to it but how we look after it so it can look after us," says Luanne. She also described what the word "farmer" means to her. Also on this broadcast; CSA farmer Keith Huscroft, actor/writer/historian Richard Rowberry and the music of Bessie Wapp. Voices Luanne Armstrong, Author, Blue Valley: An Ecological Memoir (Boswell, BC) - Luanne Armstrong is a novelist, freelance writer, editor, and publisher. She is deeply interested in writing about place and nature. Her recent book, Blue Valley, An Ecological Memoir, is about growing up in the Kootenay region of B.C. and was published in 2007 by Maa Press. Luanne has taught Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Langara College, and in venues across Canada. She holds a Masters in Creative Writing from UBC and a Ph.D in Education from UBC. She presently lives on her organic heritage farm on the east shore of Kootenay Lake. Keith Huscroft, Farmer, Huscroft Farm (Lister, BC) - Keith is a fourth-generation farmer. His great-grandparents were the first white settlers in the Creston Valley and his farm has been in operation for about 100 years. Keith takes all measures to ensure no inputs are required on his farm. He uses mixed farming practices and fertilizes using only animal and green manures. He is one of a shrinking number of farmers farming with horses instead of fossil-fuel dependent technologies. Richard Rowberry, Actor, The Nelson Theatre Company (TNT) (Nelson, BC) - Richard Rowberry is the Artistic Director of The Nelson Theatre Company (TNT). He trained "eons" ago at The National Theatre School of Canada and has worked as an arts administrator, actor, writer, and director throughout his life. He has written five plays based on local history, including Frank And The Elephants, which won the Sybil Cooke Award (Play for Young Audiences) at the 2004 Canadian One Act Play Competition. Russell Precious, Board of Directors, West Kootenay EcoSociety (Sunshine Bay, BC) - After graduating with a BA in Asian History at UBC and UC Berkeley, Russell studied organic farming with pioneer organic farmer and teacher, John Harrison. Subsequently he co-founded the Naam vegetarian restaurant in Vancouver (still running after 35 years); an organic fruit stand & wholesale fruit operation; Quadra Foods Market on Quadra Island and Capers natural foods stores in Vancouver. In 1993 he was finalist for both the regional Entrepreneur of the Year and Van Citys Ethics in Action awards. In 1999 he was one of three first recipients of the B.C. Organic Pioneers Award. He most recently joined the Board of Directors at the Kootenay Country Store Co-operative. Music Bessie Wapp, Musician/Performer (Nelson, BC) - Since 1995, Bessie Wapp has been busy performing and recording with Eastern European music ensemble Zeellia. Bessie Wapp is a two-time Jessie nominated musician, actor, designer, and stilt dancer who studied visual art and music before becoming a Co-Director of stilt-dance theatre company Mortal Coil in 1993. Bessie Wapp has worked with The Electric Company, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Caravan Theatre, and the Vancouver Moving Theatre among others.

Since March 2008, The Local Grain Revolution series has been following the evolution of Canada's first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project for grain. A total of 180 members and one business from the communities of Nelson and Creston, British Columbia, are blazing a trail towards a local grain economy. Kootenay Harvest Revival I On this Part IV of the series, we explore the first in a two-part series of recordings from the Kootenay Harvest Revival - an event hosted by Deconstructing Dinner, the Nelson-Creston Grain CSA and All Seasons Café. On this Part I of the Revival recordings, we pay respect to the original inhabitants of the region - the Sinixt people, who, while not agriculturalists, understood the bounty of the land more than any other human population who has inhabited the area. Also to explore are one of the first groups of white settlers to inhabit the region; the Doukhobors - a spiritual Christian sect who also holds a rich history of living off the land. The event acts as an exciting model for other communities wishing to inspire a more localized food system. GE-Free Zones IV Acting as a pinnacle to our GE-Free Zones series, on November 3, 2008, the City of Nelson, B.C., officially became Canada's third GE-Free zone. In a unanimous decision by the City Council, a resolution was adopted that expresses opposition to the "cultivation of GE plants and trees". Deconstructing Dinner was on hand to record the monumental decision. Voices Eileen Delehanty-Pearkes, Author, The Geography of Memory (Nelson, BC) - A fifth-generation Californian, Eileen Delehanty Pearkes has been a resident of Canada since 1985. She has lived in Nelson, B.C., since 1994. She has published numerous essays and articles exploring the connection between nature and the human imagination, as well as The Geography of Memory, her first book. JJ Verigin, Executive Director, Union of Spritual Communities of Christ (Doukhobors) (Grand Forks, BC) - The Doukhobor movement emerged in 18th century Russia as a Christian peasant reaction to the excessive opulence and ritualistic authority of the Orthodox Church. In the early 20th century, a large number of them arrived in the interior of British Columbia where a large population still reside. Russell Precious, Board of Directors, West Kootenay EcoSociety (Sunshine Bay, BC) - After graduating with a BA in Asian History at UBC and UC Berkeley, Russell studied organic farming with pioneer organic farmer and teacher, John Harrison. He most recently joined the Board of Directors at the Kootenay Country Store Co-operative. Kim Charlesworth, Steering Committee, GE-Free Kootenays (Nelson, BC) - Kim is a founding member of GE-Free Kootenays. She sits on the Board of Directors for the West Kootenay EcoSociety and is currently running for Nelson City Council in the 2008 municipal elections. Gord McAdams, Municipal Councillor, City of Nelson (Nelson, BC) Gord has worked as an Ecologist for BC's Ministry of Water, Air and Land Protection. In 2005, he was fired for bringing confidential government documents to the BC Supreme Court in support of a court action brought by the West Kootenay EcoSociety. On December 11, the Campaign for Open Government and the BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association presented Gord with the Whistleblower Award for 2007. Gord is running for Mayor of Nelson in the 2008 municipal elections. Music Bessie Wapp, Musician/Performer (Nelson, BC) - Since 1995, Bessie Wapp has been busy performing and recording with Eastern European music ensemble Zeellia.
