Hereford Inlet Lighthouse (courtesy photo) Hereford Inlet, a break in the barrier islands along the east side of Cape May, New Jersey, was used by whalers as far back as the 17th century. Shifting sands and a strong current made the inlet dangerous for mariners. As coastal shipping and the use of the inlet increased, funds for a lighthouse were appropriated in 1872. A wood frame combined keeper's house and lighthouse began service in 1874. The beautiful Victorian design was the work of the Lighthouse Board's chief draftsman, architect Paul J. Pelz. W, Scott Jett and USCG Lt. PA Felipe DeFreitas, guest speaker at a National Lighthouse Day event in 2019. After automation, the building was neglected and boarded up for nearly 20 years. Then, in 1982, the lighthouse property was leased to the City of North Wildwood, and it was restored in the years that followed. Today the lighthouse is managed by the City of North Wildwood's Historical Commission. Our guest today, W. Scott Jett, is the city historian and the city clerk for the city of North Wildwood, and he's the chairman of the Historical Commission.

As I wrote last week, I was a member of the Historical Commission for the Cause of Canonization of Servant of God Joseph Dutton who, as you know, worked for 44 years on Molokai with Saints Damien and Marianne caring for the victims of leprosy. When such a commission closes its work, a meeting must be held in the diocese of the cause for canonization with all members present. This is required by the dicastery for the causes of saints to which we our individual reports are sent. Thus, two other members of that commission, Pat Boland of Honolulu and Fr. John Paul Kimes, Canon law professor at the university of Notre Dame, and I met in Honolulu this past December to present our findings and work with Msgr. Robert Sarno, an advisor on the cause. One copy of the findings remain in the diocese of Honolulu and two are sent to Rome for further work by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. Though now retired, when he was on the staff of the dicastery (then the Congregation for Saints) in Rome, Msgr. Sarno also helped with the causes of St. Damien (canonized in 2009) and St. Marianne Cope (canonized in 2012). The diocesan phase of the Joseph Dutton cause will close in Honolulu on January 21st, after which the Roman phase of his causes goes to work. Part I of my conversation with Fr. John Paul aired last weekend. This week, in Part II, he is back with more riveting stories about the life and times of Servant of God Joseph Dutton, a man we both hope and pray will one day join Damien and Marianne at the honors of the altar.

My elementary school teacher told my parents: "He will study history" - and she was right! I studied Modern and Medieval history, Italian and German literature at the Heinrich Heine Universität Duesseldorf and the Universita degli Studi di Napoli. I wrote my PhD thesis on the Prussian Minister of War and German Chief of Staff, General Erich v. Falkenhayn (1861-1922), one of Imperial Germany's key protagonists during the First World War. The PhD was funded by the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation and my thesis was supervised by Wolfgang J. Mommsen.  After finishing my PhD and after a year as councellor in the German parliament (Deutscher Bundestag) I got funding for a major research project on international relations before 1914. The project run in close cooperation with Wolfgang Mommsen and was granted by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Cologne. The outcome was a large monograph entitled "The Triple Alliance and European Great Power Politics, 1881-1915" and several articles. I finished the project as a Feodor-Lynen scholar (a two years grant by the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation) in Vienna, cooperating with Prof. Helmut Rumpler. I was awarded my "Habilitation" at the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Duesseldorf in 1999 and got there in 2003 a honorary professorship.I taught from 1999 to 2002 at the University of Duesseldorf. At the same time I won another major research grant by the Fritz-Thyssen-Foundation for research on Wilhelm II as Supreme Warlord during the First World War. The result - a 1100 pages edition of new sources - was published in 2005 by the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Science. I was offered in August 2002 a DAAD Professorship of Modern German History at Emory University in Atlanta which I gladly accepted. Among other things I organised a large international conference in 2004 on the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 which was opened by President Jimmy Carter.I left Atlanta in summer 2006 after accepting my current position at the University of Leeds. I organized several conferences in Leeds and created and am responsible for our Master program in "War and Strategy" which is running since 2016.  Get full access to Dispatches from the War Room at dispatchesfromthewarroom.substack.com/subscribe

As you may already know, the Vatican websites have been up and down for several days, and are down, in fact, as I write this column. vaticannews.va is down but vatican.va is up, although the English language site has not been updated since November 30. A Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, said Wednesday that the Holy See had taken down its main vatican.va website amid an apparent attempt to hack the site. Without expanding on what caused the problem, he said, “Technical investigations are ongoing due to abnormal attempts to access the site.” Numerous users online, in fact, noted that the site was unavailable as of Tuesday morning. The sites have been up and down since Wednesday afternoon, with many attempts producing “404” error messages. The link you see below has nothing to do with what I normally bring you daily in this column but the World Cup is on, and it's hard to ignore stories related to this global event that, every four years, mesmerizes most of the world's population for a month! I saw a story today that I found to be very interesting – all about the traditional Arab headgear that is taking the games by storm. It quotes one Swiss fan as saying he has “been surprised by how indulgent Qataris — and others from across North Africa and the Middle East — have been when it comes to foreigners adopting and appropriating local customs and clothing, something that is generally seen as disrespectful in Europe and North America.” Being an American who lives in Europe, it was that soccer fan's statement that drew my attention. I think you'll enjoy this piece and perhaps even learn something new. It's the World Cup's Hot Accessory. But Should Fans Wear It? – The New York Times (nytimes.com) VATICAN INSIDER: SERVANT OF GOD JOSEPH DUTTON: HAWAII'S THIRD SAINT? This week, in what is normally the interview segment, I've prepared a Special Report on Joseph Dutton. The past two weeks, you heard Fr. John Paul Kimes of Notre Dame University, which has a large archive on Dutton, speak about this Servant of God, and I take another look at Dutton's life this weekend. This layman, born in Stowe, Vermont, came to the island of Molokai at the age of 44 and then for 44 years worked alongside Sts. Damien and Marianne Cope caring for the victims of leprosy who had been exiled to live here by the King of Hawaii. As you know I am an official member of the Historical Commission for Dutton's cause for canonization and have been doing research here in Rome in the archives of the SSCC Fathers, priests of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the Order to which St. Damien and all his successor on Kalaupapa have belonged. The Dutton Guild ordered holy cards with a third class relic to be made in Rome. As you can see, if you ask for and receive a favor or miracle through the intercession of Servant of God Joseph Dutton, please write to The Joseph Dutton Guild, P.O. Box 3344, Honolulu, Hawaii 96801 (USA) Formerly known as the Sandwich Islands, the name was changed to Hawaiian Islands in 1840. It was a kingdom under Hawaiian rulers for just over 80 years, starting in 1810. Hawaii became a U.S. State in 1959. Hawaii now has two saints. Will she soon have a third in Joseph Dutton?

The summer I turned thirteen my family moved to Berlin from Canada. Although we were an essentially secular Jewish family, I had a basic Jewish education and quite a developed awareness of the history of World War II and the Holocaust. Like many young readers, I had been captivated by “The Diary of Anne Frank”. I'd also been to museums and seen plays, movies, and read many stories about the period and the plight of Europe's Jews under the Nazis. So although I was well aware of Germany's brutal history, I wasn't prepared for its omnipresence in everyday life in Berlin. Subtle, almost banal traces of the Nazi past were everywhere: in discreet memorial plaques on buildings, in the names of subway stops, or even on the ground beneath one's feet, where the names of deported Nazi victims were engraved on special brass cobblestones in the sidewalks in front of the victims' former homes. But for Harvard anatomist Sabine Hildebrandt, growing up in postwar Germany meant being surrounded by a lack of evidence of her country's dark past. Absent Jewish neighbors, abandoned synagogues, and uncomfortable silences: that was her experience. From the silence a curiosity emerged, a need to know that was the impetus for her ongoing quest to excavate the past, to understand it and to memorialize it. And that's what she does in her book, “The Anatomy of Murder: Ethical Transgressions and Anatomical Science during the Third Reich”, the first systematic study of anatomy under National Socialism. Sabine Hildebrandt is an associate professor of pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital, and a lecturer on Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She also teaches anatomy and history of anatomy at Harvard. I knew I wanted to speak to Sabine when I saw her name mentioned in not one, but two stories in the New York Times related to German anatomy's Nazi past; one about the notorious Pernkopf anatomical atlas,  and the other related to her work as a member of the Historical Commission on the University of Strasbourg, which was taken over by the Nazis during the war and was the site of some harrowing abuses. I've linked to both articles below.Speaking to Sabine was interesting on many levels. The history she has systematically laid out in her work is horrific, but unquestionably fascinating and valuable in its own right. But what is so special about her work, I think, is the way it prompts us to reflect on medicine's relationship to power, and the discipline's intrinsic potential not only for good, but also for evil.On that note, a brief warning. My conversation with Sabine includes the discussion and description of medical violence and outright crimes in a context of tremendous brutality and disregard for human life. So please listen with caution and care. ***Links:Sabine's bioNew York Times article on Pernkopf AtlasNew York Times article on Strasbourg University***Recorded October 12, 2022Music: Mr Smith  Art: Jeff Landman

Join me this weekend on Vatican Insider for Part II of my off-the-cuff interview with Fr. John Paul Kimes, Canon law professor at the university of Notre Dame and member of the Historical Commission for the cause of canonization of Servant of God Joseph Dutton. Dutton, a layman was companion, caregiver and friend for 44 years, alongside Sts. Damien and Marianne Cope, to the victims of leprosy on Kalaupapa, a peninsula of the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Father John Paul and I spoke after a recent event in Honolulu for this cause of canonization, a gala, fund-raising luncheon that brought together just under 500 people from several Hawaiian islands. He gave an over-the-top keynote address at that event! This took place during a week in Hawaii in which I was also sworn in as an official member of the Historical Commission, a huge honor! Father Kimes, a riveting storyteller, tells us about the link between Notre Dame University and Joseph Dutton and explains what he has learned of Dutton by researching the university archives on this Servant of God. You'll love every minute of our conversation! Fr. John Paul had arrived in Honolulu the night before the luncheon and had to get to the airport almost immediately afterwards for his return flight so finding time – and a place! – to have this conversation was a real blessing, almost a miracle. The only available space, in fact, was in a small hallway off the main hallway not far from the room where our luncheon was. A table and two unoccupied chairs seemed to be waiting just for us. Not an acoustically perfect setting, however, so you'll hear some faint background conversation as people walk by in the main hall but Father John Paul is such a great storyteller that you may not even note it!
