Plus: How can dads effectively communicate with their daughters? I'll talk it over with Michelle Watson Canfield, author of the book, "Let's Talk." That and more on Thursday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY.

This week I have the pleasure of bringing Aaron Rhodes onto the podcast. Aaron is the Strength & Conditioning Coach for the MLB's St Louis Cardinals. The title of this episode comes out almost immediately in the interview. The reason I chose it is because this is some great advice Aaron gives for anyone out there to take away. If you are focusing on pursuing a career in sport of any kind and are told something along the lines of "It's not realistic" or "go find a real job"... Aaron's advice is to focus on doing what you love. If you love playing your sport and are willing to put the work and the time into pursuing it for as long as possible, don't focus on anything else. We also talk about where young athletes can start separating themselves from their competition. Aaron's advice is simple, yet extremely effective. Open up your notebook and start writing down what you think you can do to be better. What can you do outside of your sport to better prepare yourself? One big takeaway is Aaron's take on in-season training. It does not need to be hard. It is just about working through the next issue. Where are you struggling in your game? Your training should be built around where you need to improve in the game. There are so many missed opportunities with kids quitting training in season. To get in touch with Aaron;Instagram @rhodesstrength Thank YOU for tuning in to another episode of The Elite Development Podcast! Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo announced the formation of a Commission on Unalienable Rights in July 2019 and charged the members to meet with a broad group of experts and write a report to advise the Secretary with advice on how to pursue and champion “human rights grounded in our nation’s founding principles and the principles of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” The Commission published its draft report last month and it has received both acclaim and criticism. Please join Commission member Peter Berkowitz and human rights expert Aaron Rhodes to discuss the report and why it elicited such varied reactions. TisaKorean and Judiciary at recordBar, on Thursday, Nov. 21, with TisaKorean, Amira Melanin Wang and Solomon. We'll also hear some of his favorite songs from 2019 and talk about some of his favorite concerts too. Dr. Aaron Rhodes’ book, The Debasement of Human Rights: How Politics Sabotage the Ideal of Freedom, identifies a dangerous trend in the international human rights movement. Increasingly, the natural rights of individuals, like religious freedom and freedom of speech and conscience, are being conflated with manufactured rights that are the social and economic policy priorities of particular groups and governments. Natural rights protect the fairness of the political process by ensuring that individuals are free to think, speak, and act according to their convictions. However, when governments and social groups can transform their economic and social policy goals into “human rights,” this undercuts the moral legitimacy and persuasive power of natural rights.Join us for a discussion on the future of the human rights movement and suggestions as to how the U.S. can best shape human rights policy and strategy. Our panelists will discuss how robust protection of natural rights, such as religious freedom, can ultimately lead to economic and social prosperity and why natural rights are best protected when they are protected for all, not for members of particular identity groups.Support the show (http://www.faithandlaw.org/donate)

Dr. Aaron Rhodes’ new book, The Debasement of Human Rights: How Politics Sabotage the Ideal of Freedom, identifies a dangerous trend in the international human rights movement. Increasingly, the natural rights of individuals, like religious freedom, are being conflated with manufactured rights which are the social and economic policy priorities of particular groups and governments. Natural rights protect the fairness of the political process by ensuring that individuals are free to think, speak, and act according to their convictions, including their religious beliefs. However, when governments and social groups can transform their economic and social policy goals into “human rights,” this undercuts the moral legitimacy and persuasive power of natural rights like religious freedom. Our panelists will discuss how robust protection of religious freedom will ultimately lead to economic prosperity and why natural rights are best protected when they are protected for all, not for members of particular identity groups. Join us for this discussion on the future of international religious freedom and the human rights movement. Light refreshments will be served. The idea of human rights began as a call for individual freedom from tyranny, yet today it is exploited to rationalize oppression and promote collectivism. How did this happen? In The Debasement of Human Rights, Aaron Rhodes reveals how this emancipatory ideal became so adulterated.Rhodes identifies the fundamental flaw in the Universal Declaration of Human of Rights, the basis for many international treaties and institutions. It mixes freedom rights rooted in natural law – authentic human rights – with “economic and social rights,” or claims to material support from governments, which are intrinsically political. As a result, the idea of human rights has lost its essential meaning and moral power. The international community and civil society groups now see human rights as being defined by legislation, not by transcendent principles. Freedoms are traded off for the promise of economic benefits, and the notion of collective rights is used to justify restrictions on basic liberties. Few serious observers would deny that the concept has lost clarity. Rhodes provides a comprehensive analysis of the problem, joining philosophy and history with insights from his own extensive work in the field. Aaron Rhodes is an international human rights advocate. He was Executive Director of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights for fourteen years and is President of the Forum for Religious Freedom–Europe. He received a B.A. from Reed College and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
With a doctorate from the University of Chicago’s Committee on Social Thought and decades of work in the world of international human rights institutions behind him, Aaron Rhodes has written a devastating account of that world’s intellectual confusions and moral corruption. In exquisite detail, and as none before it has, his new book explains how the 20th century’s push to treat economic and social “rights” as human rights has undermined the very idea of human or natural rights. That has led in turn to restrictions on the rights that alone have secured the liberty of countless millions around the world. Please join us for a discussion of the foundations, course, and prospects of the Enlightenment project that has given us the modern world of individual liberty.
