If you were lost in a mythical forest, or a futuristic city, or even just stumbling aimlessly somewhere along Telegraph or San Pablo Avenue in Oakland - It's not that Spellling would know the way home (though she might.) It's that, without a doubt, she would create a pathway to somewhere, and the journey to that new place would be delightful. It would be enchanting. dear livejournal, i’ve been in this *spring cleaning* sort of mode. obviously cliche, but i’ve been reorganizing my bedroom a bit. the place i’ve spent most of my time the past couple years… you heard of it? mostly i’m moving all the food not bombs stuff into the garage, which is huge and sort of ridiculous that i’ve been storing it in my bedroom this whole time. it’s so much stuff. and i need to make space for this cute ska cat bookshelf i found at an estate sale. i got a new bike seat and i hope it makes my rhoided buttock feel better enough to ride. i got the landlords to do some maintenance that just took a while for me to bug them about (emphasis on the *bug* part because davis cockroach summers are horrifying). we’re feeling good and fresh with all these changes !please enjoy these fresh tunes. i mean, they’re like 3+ years old because i’m listening to music in chronological order and i’m very behind. but these songs are most definitely shelf stable ! enjoy ! and don’t forget to refrigerate after opening *winky face emoticon*DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Qlowski “Taking Control” Pure As Fearanxiety machine “waiting around” probablysun young “friends” tilesHanna Broback “Sharp Houses” Pine BedCassette “Intentions” CassetteBasement Revolver “Johnny” Heavy EyesAustin Leonard Jones “Haunted House Party” CujoDingbat Superminx “Happening” Public LuxurySPELLLING “Hard to Please” Mazy FlyVintage Crop “Guarantees” Company Man EPYves Jarvis “360” The Same But By Different MeansEleanor Murray “Scream” ThunderlingTanger “I’ll Never Remember” Hz DonutMeg Baird and Mary Lattimore “Painter of Tygers” Ghost ForestsOur Girl “I Really Don’t Mind” Bedroom RecordNEO NEOS “Rock Facts” HARD DRIVE EXPERIMENTS VOL. 1nuvolascura “flower offering” nuvolascuraR.Ariel “Full Moon” Where You AreMoths Protect Me “Never Admit” This Can’t Be Happening

Bay Area-based experimental artist Chrystia Cabral started making Gothic-inspired music as SPELLLING, in 2017. The dabbling and experimenting of her first two albums were instructive but have now given way to something more intentional. The bewitching vocals and haunting soundscapes of Pantheon of Me and Mazy Fly are still present but her art has evolved and expanded sonically and thematically on her lush, third record The Turning Wheel. She pulls from Science Fiction authors, fairy tales, Disney and Afro Futurism—building worlds intended for fans of her music to inhabit and seek refuge. Many thanks for making this possible — Tia for taking us through the looking glass and into space. Thank you Sacred Bones Records for use of music. It's the Season Finale of The Witch Wave! Tia Cabral is a Bay Area-based musician who performs under the magical moniker SPELLLING. She released her first moodily mystical full length Pantheon of Me in September 2017 to rave reviews including being Bandcamp's #4 record of that year, and she followed it up in 2018 with her critically acclaimed darkly sparkling album Mazy Fly released on Sacred Bones Records. On both of these albums, she draws from dream imagery and esoteric symbolism to tap into the ethereal realm of emotion and spirit all spiraling from a synthy sonic palette. Her brand new album, The Turning Wheel, marks a symphonic expansion for SPELLLING, with lush orchestral production that utilizes 31 musicians, and celebrates macrocosmic themes of “human unity, the future, divine love and the enigmatic ups and downs of being a part of this carnival called life. ” It feels very much like a Magnum Opus, and heralds a brilliant and bewitching music-maker at the height of her powers. The visuals for the album are maximalist as well with SPELLLING and co. donning elaborate costumes and metamorphic makeup. SPELLLING has toured with Boy Harsher and Amen Dunes and her live performances are regarded as revelations of spell and spectacle. On this episode, Tia discusses her magical music theories, divine influences from Kate Bush to Sun Ra, and how occult practices like tarot and alchemy helped conjure her new album, The Turning Wheel. Pam also talks about the sacred symbolism of the wheel, and answers a listener question about meeting the felines of her dreams. Our sponsors for this episode are Moon Dust Press, Witch Baby Soap, Motherland, BetterHelp, Mithras Candle, and Maude's Paperwing Gallery

SPELLLING - "Boys at School" from the 2021 album The Turning Wheel on Sacred Bones. Bay Area-based artist Chrystia Cabral, who records as SPELLLING, returns with her third full-length, The Turning Wheel, out June 25th via Sacred Bones. In a press release, she details that the album has “themes of human unity, the future, divine love, and the enigmatic ups and downs of being a part of this carnival called life.”  Today's Song of the Day is a dramatic seven-minute-long piano-led ballad, with Cabral reflecting on the early stages of her life. She explains that the track “steps back into my younger self, my teenage self to voice my angst, desires and disillusionments. I knew when I created the main motif on the piano that it was striking something really raw and both delicate and fierce. The notes just immediately transported me to the era of my youth, of this time when you are really beginning to confront the mirror of yourself to the outside world.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SPELLLING - "Secret Thread" from the 2019 album Mazy Fly on Sacred Bones Records. Oakland-based artist Tia Cabral, who records under the name Spellling, found inspiration for today's Song of the Day in both a children's book and her dog. She toldCulture Collide: I remember reading this book called Brown Angels. It’s a little book of poetry, and it has these old photos of black kids just being joyful. There’s a poem in there called "Secret Thread," about the unspoken bond between people and ideas. This thing that tethers you to someone else, that you don’t need words for. So it’s not weightless, it’s the opposite, really. The secret thread is what tethers me. Even though I’m up in the sky, it’s what keeps me tethered to this world. It’s between both- you’re rooted in the earth and looking up into the sky. Today's featured track is also where the title of her latest album originates from. She continued: This was the last song I wrote for the record. It felt like I was collecting a lot of little treasures from other songs. I was inspired by this idea of what the spirit of this record would look like. Mazy Fly was the name I came up with for the music on this record. It’s a creature-like thing, something with wings, something that can transport you to this world. I got the idea from my dog. At the end of writing sessions, we’d go out to this field and she’d run like a maniac. I was inspired by her being in this state of crazy energy. She was running, and it was like she didn’t even know where she was running. It’s like she was flying. And I just loved that moment of the day.
