Today, on Karl and Crew Mornings, we concluded our weekly theme, "Marriage and Family", and we discussed family reunions as God's child. We are all loved by God and all made in his image...however, not everyone is a child of God. What does that mean and why? The scripture references were John 1:12-13, John 8:42-44, and Ephesians 2:1-3. Our special guest was Dr. Gary Chapman, well-known marriage counselor, speaker, and award-winning author (The 5 Love Languages). His latest book is called "5 Traits of a Healthy Family". He shared his marriage testimony and offered practical advice and encouragement. We also talked with Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield. She is a licensed professional counselor, speaker, and author. She unpacked her latest book, "Let's Talk: Conversation Starters for Dads and Daughters". Hear the highlights of the program on today's Karl and Crew Showcast. Today, on Karl and Crew Mornings, we continued our theme, "Arise", and we discussed biblical lessons learned from movies that motivate us. The bible is filled with aspiring, faithful stories like in Joshua 1. Are you looking for a relationship and waiting for "the one" to come your way? Have you ever wondered if what you're hearing is God's voice? Then you'll want to hear Dr. Michelle's story. Hear how God "downloaded" what He wanted her to know, including a ministry project He was calling her to. Dr. Michelle shares how she was missing something in her life--a relationship with her Abba Father. She began hearing from God, the Father, and it transformed her life. Coming from a background of abuse by the father figures she trusted, this life-changing encounter with her heavenly Father redeemed the brokenness and set her on the path to her Fierce Calling. Once her relationship with her heavenly Father was restored, He then sent "the one" her way. Powerful and sweet, you won't want to miss this episode! In the second part of this conversation, Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield leans into the practical actions fathers can take to connect with their daughters. She analyzes how to make 1-on-1s more effective and breaks down three of the most important skills you can implement starting today. Full SHOW NOTES for today's conversation Key Takeaways If your daughter is pushing you away or is estranged, put your love in writing. Soften your tone by starting questions with the words, “I'm wondering…”. Fight for your daughter by proactively putting positive, handwritten messages on her mirror. Your anger has more destructive power than you'll ever know. Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield has dedicated the last 13 years to empowering fathers to turn their hearts toward their daughters. In addition to writing two books for dads of daughters, she is the founder of The Abba Project and has hosted The Dad Whisperer Podcast since 2016. Key Quotes 07:12 - "The power of your written word on her mirror, on the sticky note, or even just writing her little card. Your handwritten messages, in this time of technology, are things that that will... last the test of time." 21:38 - "Drop your anger. I know that's easier said than done, but, Dad, your anger will do more to shut down the core of who she is, to mar her spirit, to defeat her confidence, tear her down. Your anger has more destructive power than you'll ever know." Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield recognizes that dads need to turn their hearts—not just their heads—towards their daughters. In this episode, she shares several tools you can add to your fatherhood toolbox to engage your daughter's heart. Full SHOW NOTES for today's conversation Key Takeaways When you look into your child's eyes, especially when you're angry, you'll respond differently. Connect with your daughter's heart each night by asking, "How have I been sharp with you today, and will you forgive me?” You will never regret waiting to discipline your child until after you have calmed down. The best antidote to saving your daughter from a dud is engaging her at the heart level. Lead your daughter to laugh, love, look, lament, and listen. Key Quotes 7:44 - "But again, we all give out what we have. So if you are in a place where you don't know how to be gentle with yourself or quiet before the Lord to let Him convict you or speak to you, it's going to be harder to give that out. But it starts with you having times, I would say with God, where you listen and soften your heart. Because don't we love how Proverbs 15 says, a soft answer turns away wrath?" 12:29 - "The best antidote to saving your daughter from the dudes and the duds is you engage at a heart level by asking her questions. How did my response impact you? How did that make you feel? All those heart words." There was no one within my family, at work, at church or within my friend group who understood or could relate to what I was going through."SFN Mentor Fathers share their experiences with younger dads closer to the beginning of their journey raising a child with the same or similar special needs. In a special Father's Day episode, Mike sits down with Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield, author of Let's Talk: Conversation Starters for Dads and Daughters. It can be a daunting task for dads and daughters to talk about the hard stuff, the deep stuff, the vulnerable stuff, and the complex stuff. According to Dr. Canfield, when a daughter opens her mouth, her heart opens. And when a daughter's heart is open, her dad's heart automatically opens. Dr. Canfield's goal with Let's Talk is to help dads close the communication gap with their daughters by showing them how to listen and build trust with insights and scripted questions that equip them to move from fun get-to-know-you chats to deep discussions that dive into their daughters' struggles, hurts, fears, and hopes. About Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield Dr. Canfield holds a PhD in Health Psychology, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor. In 2010, she founded The Abba Project, where she leads dads of daughters ages 13 to 30 to dial in with more intention and consistency to their heart space. Additionally, she serves as co-chair of the Father-Daughter Initiative at the National Center for Fathering. Dr. Canfield has authored two books: Dad, Here's What I Really Need from You: A Guide for Connecting with Your Daughter's Heart, and Let's Talk: Conversation Starters for Dads and Daughters. She also hosts The Dad Whisperer Podcast, where her purpose is to provide practical resources for dads, especially those with daughters.

Raising teens can be a beautiful endeavor and sometimes an incredible challenge. Raising teens in our modern day world is even more difficult. Not only do we deal with their ever-changing personalities, we also have to be aware of the media that floods their world daily, especially as it relates to their technology. Smartphones have taken over the way a teen views the world. And with thee smartphones are also the potential casualties of sexualized media, ones that we are aware of and others that we are not. I was recently a panelist speaking about how to raise teenagers in a highly sexualized, digital world. I wanted to continue that conversation. Let's take a listen as I chat in The New Lounge with Abou Djaouga, Lanre Oyebanjo, Raynold Mensah, and Eric Henderson. All of these men are very well accomplished in their line of work, but they are even more incredible fathers...and fathers of teens. Michelle Watson Canfield, PhD, LPC, is a national speaker, author, professional counselor of 24 years, and founder of The Abba Project, a nine-month group forum for dads whose daughters are in their teens and twenties...and she's straight-up awesome!!! She writes guest articles for various online and print journals and magazines, hosts her own radio show/podcast called The Dad Whisperer, and she and her husband Dr. Ken Canfield are soon going to re-launch the Father-Daughter Summit and a Let's Talk curriculum for dads of daughters. We had such a great time chatting today about blended families and her work with dads of daughters. Recently married for the first time, she just realized that she is part of a blended family tribe of twenty-four (24!!)! Michelle shared with us wisdom from her family and from her work, and she gave us numerous immediately practical strategies for helping build better relationships between dads and daughters. We discussed a variety of books and resources that she recommends (links below!), we shared some laughs, and she even graced us with a song at the end (in addition to everything else, she has a great voice and has been a worship leader for years). Michelle has written two books that are specifically aimed at helping improve communication and connectedness between fathers and daughters, and they're both going on my Christmas list! Below are some of the quotes from the episodes as well as links to her work and to the various resources that were mentioned during the interview. Be sure to connect with her, reach out to her, and go get a copy of her books!
