Rivka and Frank are joined by Will, a US Army veteran and member of the organization About Face: Veterans Against the War, to discuss the 2016 Star Wars standalone movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The group discusses the film's themes around imperialism, war, revolution, radicalism, and what it means to compromise one's morals for the sake of the “greater good.” They also ask the important question: what the hell was Forest Whitaker thinking? About Face: Veterans Against the War For next week's movie, we'll be watching the 1989 “Weird Al” Yankovic comedy UHF.
Central to Trump's fascist agenda is his pledge to carry out the largest mass deportation effort in the nation's history. Trump has affirmed that efforts will involve a national emergency declaration and the military. To discuss this topic Sam interviews Brittany Ramos DeBarros, an army veteran and Organizer Director of About Face: Veterans Against the War (on Instagram @vetsaboutface). [FIXED AUDIO - this is corrected from the original upload]. A panel of leftist veterans and DSA members(ft. Mitch, Spencer, Marcos, and James) joins us to talk about serving in American imperial war, the Afghanistan withdrawal, the "hero worship" that American culture has pushed for 20 years, and what all this actually does to a person. Good words here for veterans, active duty servicepeople, and civilians. This episode gets emotionally heavy with talk of heavy topics like trauma and suicide, so take care. - If you need this number, the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255) - About Face: Veterans Against the War - https://aboutfaceveterans.org/ The DSA Veterans Working Groups - https://www.dsausa.org/working-groups/veterans-working-group/ Combat Obscura - a documentary assembled from Marine-shot footage in Afghanistan - http://combatobscura.oscilloscope.net/ -- Pod recs: - Eyes Left - https://soundcloud.com/eyesleft @eyesleft What A Hell of a Way to Die - https://soundcloud.com/hellofawaytodie - @hellofawaytodie - Help us make the show! www.patreon.com/givingthemic - Find us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/givingthemic - Questions/comments/suggestions for great local Korean food: givingthemic@gmail.com - facebook.com/givingthemic/ - - Main theme by The Mysterious Breakfast'r Cereal on SoundCloud @chiptheme - - All items trademarked and copyright their respective owners. This episode is dedicated to Coach Jimmy Collins, longtime Marvin Gaye fan and loving father of Bring Receipts co-host Brandi Collins-Dexter. Coach Collins passed away in December 2020. In this episode, Brandi argues that Marvin Gaye's rendition of the national anthem at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game is the only version America deserves. Steven, though a fan of this version, completely disagrees.Joining the podcast to decide who is right is Matt Howard, the current National Organizer for Communications at Right to the City Alliance and previously was the Co-Executive Director at About Face: Veterans Against the War. This episode covers Marvin Gaye's musical career, the history of the Star Spangled Banner (did you know it came from a drinking song?), and revolutionary drum machine the Roland TR-808, and major events from 1982. This episode features the song "The AnacreonticSong" as performed by the University of Michigan's American Music Institute. In this special episode of “Working People,” we talk with three veterans about how the military and the class system (in the U.S. and around the world) go hand in hand. How does the military market itself to the poor and marginalized (and why is that marketing so effective)? How does our broken economy ensure a constant stream of recruits who will be sent to fight endless imperialist wars just so they can pay for college or finally be accepted as a worthy citizen? What happens to these recruits when they're serving and when (or if) they leave? Why is it that so many features of military life and America's self-perpetuating war machine translate to an accepted status quo in which women, LGBTQ folks, and non-white recruits are subjected to vicious harassment, violent assault, or worse? In this important conversation, we're joined by Triste Ordex, Marine Corps vet and national organizer for Vets for the People; Amber Mathwig, a former 10-year Navy Master-at-Arms and organizer with About Face: Veterans Against the War; and Clarke, a Navy veteran, organizer with the Democratic Socialists of America, and commercial diver.

Join us for an enlightening discussion with Brittany DeBarros, Organizing Director of About Face: Veterans Against the War. We talk about her journey from soldier to activist, how to address oppressive patterns in movement building, what happens when we win, and how to hold multiple truths at once. We also touch on the joys of task forces and the musical “Hamilton.” Stick around if you want to hear Emily and Sarah reflect further on the idea of imperial privilege -- unless you’re a fan of Colin Powell, but, in that case, I’m not sure why you’re even listening to this podcast. https://aboutfaceveterans.org/ Featured music is "J.R.O.T.C." by Brittney Chantele, courtesy of the artist. https://www.brittneychantele.com/ Brittany came to About Face: Veterans Against the War with a diverse mix of business, military and non-profit leadership experiences that cemented her deep passion and commitment to intersectional movement building work. She deployed to Afghanistan for a year in 2012 and has worked on economic and racial liberation issues in various capacities since she returned. She is particularly passionate about leveraging her experience as a Psychological Operations Officer to center narrative and behavior change in campaign strategy. She is based in NYC. The United States is in the midst of a mass uprising against police violence, but also a whole list of grievances such as the lack of jobs, health care, education and more. Sustained protests have been going on for two weeks defying curfews and severe repression by police. The national guard has been deployed to 23 states and President Trump threatened to deploy the military against people expressing their First Amendment rights. We speak with Danny Sjursen, a retired Major and spokesperson for About Face: Veterans Against the War, about how members of the military are responding to current events. Veterans have called for members of the national guard and military to refuse illegal orders and they are receiving an unprecedented number of responses. Danny also provides insight into the police community and why they are doubling down on repression. For more information, visit PopularResistance.org.
We were able to speak with Krystal Two Bulls and Matt Howard in Spring 2019 about their work, leadership and movement with About Face: Veterans Against the War. Krystal is an Oglala Lakota and Northern Cheyenne woman who reminds us that what matters is what we fight for, not what we fight against. Krystal is a new member to About Face: Veterans Against the War, having joined in August 2018. She served in the US Army Reserves for 8 years and was deployed to Kuwait in 2009. Krystal is new to the anti-militarism conversation, but has significant knowledge and experience in environmental justice, Indigenous Sovereignty and social justice campaigns. She works to decolonize the approaches and methods that we utilize within movement spaces. Matt has worked with About Face: Veterans Against the War in various capacities since 2011 including as Chapter president in the Bay area, local organizer in Texas with the Operation Recovery campaign, as Communications Director and currently as Co-Director. He served in the Marine Corps as a helicopter mechanic from 2001 to 2006 and deployed twice to Iraq where he became deeply opposed to the occupations and discovered a commitment to social change work.
Amber interviews Krystal TwoBulls, an Army veteran and Northern Cheyenne and Oglala Lakota Indigenous woman. Krystal is one of the co-directors of the #DropTheMIC campaign with About Face: Veterans Against the War. Krystal and Amber discuss Indigenous resistance, militarism, and why we need to center Indigenous Peoples in anti-military industrial complex work. Lyle Jeremy Rubin, a five-year marine veteran of the war in Afghanistan, member of About Face: Veterans Against the War, and PhD candidate in history has developed considerable authority and wisdom to speak on US foreign policy, truth about war veterans, and the role liberal and progressive media celebrities play as “cheerleaders” of the “forever war” the United States seems unwilling to end. Rubin and Scheer talk about the relationship of war-fighting, patriotism and the American people. About Americans' Rubin says, “I think the veteran as this kind of patriotic object really speaks to a much deeper insecurity on the part of the populous, not just about American foreign policy, but about the state of America in general as a kind of decadent empire that's somewhat aimless and self-destructive. That's at least where I would begin the conversation.”
Drones are quickly becoming a crucial part of many US military and government toolboxes in order to deal with specialized situations. This morning, I saw that the FAA granted a special exemption to allow drones to help fight massive forest fires happening in Idaho. Police departments are using drones for building searches and crisis situations at a minimum. And our military uses drones for a wide variety of functions, not the least of which is to be used as an instrument of assassination. Something important to remember here is that not all drones are armed. One surveillance drone, Global Hawk, surveillance drone, has a 150 ft wingspan and is half the size of a 747. It can fly at much higher altitudes and can fly longer than most armed drones. The kinds of intelligence it gathers are certainly magnitudes of order above armed drones or small surveillance drones. Do we believe it’s acceptable to share this kind of intelligence with our foreign partners? Should the info a Global Hawk gets from surveilling Yemen be given to the SA government for us in their proxy war against the Houthti’s? Should surveillance of Syria and Palestine be given to Israel? These are important questions in this discussion. Danny and I bring you our breakdown of drone warfare.
