In this edition, we had the pleasure of hosting a very special guest, Lachlan Giles. Lachlan is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and coach hailing from Melbourne, Australia, where he competes out of his renowned gym, Absolute MMA, located in St Kilda. Lachlan's impressive resume speaks for itself. He achieved the remarkable feat of securing the ADCC bronze medal at the Submission Grappling World Championships in 2019, showcasing his exceptional skills on the mat. Additionally, he holds the prestigious title of a bronze medalist at the BJJ No-Gi World Championships, cementing his status as a top-tier competitor. During our conversation, we delved into various captivating topics. One highlight was Lachlan's involvement in a groundbreaking initiative where he was entrusted with overseeing a $100,000 donation aimed at supporting aspiring Jiu-Jitsu athletes in Australia. One of the crucial criteria for these grants was to be a drug-free athlete, a subject that has been a hot topic within the sport, especially surrounding figures like Gordon Ryan. Ironically, it was Gordon himself who once accused Lachlan of using steroids, leading to Derek from More Plates, More Dates creating a video based on questionable evidence provided by Gordon. We also explored the nuances of teaching, learning, and coaching styles in Jiu-Jitsu. Lachlan shared his unique approach, incorporating his university-level Jiu-Jitsu education acquired from Submeta, both in the gym with his competitors and for subscribers worldwide. Furthermore, we delved into the importance of strength training and how strength, flexibility, and even being the smaller participant can offer advantages in the world of grappling. Our host, Mikael, played a pivotal role in steering this enlightening conversation. With a long-standing relationship with Lachlan, having received his black belt from him, and his experience training with the esteemed John Danaher, Mikael provided valuable insights throughout the episode. This episode is an absolute treat for combat athletes and Jiu-Jitsu fanatics alike. So sit back, relax, and tune in to gain exclusive knowledge from one of the most accomplished practitioners in the field. Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode two hundred and six of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!Absolute MMA heaven for you this week, but as ever with Distraction Pieces, this is not strictly for the hardcore heads - so don’t skip it if you’re on the fence about it or don’t follow it as religiously as some of us… (Yes I’m talking about Pip…) - there are gems and jewels to be gained from it as always! Anyway - disclaimers aside - please welcome one of the most revered referees in the business, Marc Goddard! A true masterclass in the complex and nuanced art of refereeing, about which Marc expounds on perfectly as he goes over past bouts, the success stories as well as the calls that still haunt him, the old days of UFC when it was all on VHS with only two rules (no biting and no eye gouging), the development of the sport from being a spectacle, his involvement with IMMAF (International Mixed Martial Arts Federation), his introduction into the world of MMA via his next door neighbour, the constant sport-wide evolution, the ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ life of a ref, new rule revisions, and just so much goodness from a wise, friendly figure in the sport. As stated earlier, one for the fans of course but also one for those not so acquainted with the world, and certainly one for those hungry to learn. A side of the sport that we don’t often hear from right here. Indulge.––––– ––––– –––––THIS EPISODE'S LINKS:• MARC on TWITTER!• MARC on INSTAGRAM!• IMMAF!• SCROOBUS PIP on TWITTER!• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM!• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS • DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOK• DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAM• NEW LISTENERS TAKE NOTE!!!
