On this episode of "Come Pray with Me" I interview Professor Susan Maneck from Jackson State University. She will be sharing her journey as a Baha'i, as well as explaining how the faith has evolved over the years. Baha'i is a unique and historically recent monotheistic religion. They believe all faiths are connected and build on each other. We will be learning about the lives of Baha'i prophets, such as Ali Muhammad (also known as The Bab) and Baha'u'llah. If you would like to learn more about Baha'i, Professor Maneck has a podcast called Baha'i Perspective that can be found here http://www.bahaipodcast.com/archives.asp?pYrID=2009. I also found the video "What is the Baha'i Faith?: An Introduction by Rainn Wilson" to be very helpful and informative while working on this episode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLSaDVG4yBE

Al-Insan ("Man") (alternative names: al-Dahr, "Endless time", Hal Ata, "Has There Not come") is the 76th chapter (surah) of the Quran with 31 verses (ayat). According to most scholars of the Islamic tradition, the chapter is a Medinan surah, i.e. it was revealed during the Medinan phase of Muhammad's prophethood. Some commentators say that verse 24 was an exception and was revealed in Mecca, and others say that verses 23–31 were revealed in Mecca. Yet others, a minority, say that the entire chapter was revealed in Mecca, thus classifying it as a Meccan surah.[1] Most Shia sources and some Sunni ones linked the revelation of the verses 5–22—which discuss "the pious" (al-abrar) and the rewards that await them[2]—to an experience of the family of Ali (Muhammad's son-in-law) and his wife Fatimah. According to this account, the family fasted for three days to fulfill a vow they had made. In each evening, when the family was about to break their fast, a needy person knocked on their door asking for food. The family gave food to each of them. The family had so little food that this charity meant that they had no food left and had only water for the evening. On the fourth day, Muhammad met with the family and saw them in dire hunger. According to the account, at this point Gabriel revealed the verses and congratulated Muhammad for having such a family. This account appears in several Quranic exegesis (tafsir), including Al-Qurtubi's Tafsir, Shaykh Tabarsi's Majma' al-Bayan and Mahmud al-Alusi's Ruh al-Ma'ani.[3] --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rozi-irfan-rosyadhi/support

Good People. I should tell you first that this interview contains explicit language. So if you have little ones around, tell them to come listen when they're 18. This interview with Ali Muhammad was the most relaxed interview I've done - and by relaxed I mean, we ordered some chicken (which he ate), got some other food and drink - it was literally a recording of a conversation over a meal. Ali Muhammad is the Co-Host of In the Conversation Podcast so he's no stranger to the audio platform. He calls himself a professional storyteller and drops so many wise comments in our conversation. He believes being in any religion of any kind - no matter if you're Christian, Islam or Buddhist, it requires discipline. This conversation has laughs, wisdom and of course...swearing. Ali Muhammad isn't special. In fact, if you look at his history, he should be like any one of the other kids from the West End of Louisville, selling drugs or committing crimes to get by in life, because that was the example that was set for them in life. And for a period, that would have been exactly what Ali Muhammad's path was looking like. But then, he decided to make a change. A change that anybody has the power to make, but are often held back by what others may think of them. And he followed through with that decision by taking action. And it was a process, a sometimes slow process, but he kept moving forward. And this podcast is a little bit about his story. Ali is the founder of StoryWood Bowties, a company which makes luxury bowties out of historical wood, but who's mission is to help make the world better. Learn more about him in this podcast and check out his website at StorywoodBowties.com.

Our quote for today is from Albert Einstein. He said, "My religiosity consists in a humble admiration of the infinitely superior spirit that reveals itself in the little that we, with our weak and transitory understanding, can comprehend of reality. Morality is of the highest importance — but for us, not for God." In this podcast, we are making our way through Garry R. Morgan's book, "Understanding World Religions in 15 Minutes a Day." Our Understanding World Religions topic for today is, "Baha'i." The newest of what are generally considered world religions is Baha'i, which only began in the mid-nineteenth century. Although small, with about six million followers, in less than one hundred fifty years it has become a global and growing religion with adherents in almost every country. Baha'i began in what is now Iran and was first seen as a sect of Shi'ite Islam. Shi'ites believe that one of the great imams of the past (some Shi'ites believe there were seven imams, others twelve) is still alive, in hiding, and one day will reveal himself as the Mahdi, who will bring worldwide peace and justice. In 1844, Ali Muhammad declared himself to be the twelfth imam and took the name Bab-ud-Din, meaning “Gate of Faith." Great excitement and rejoicing turned to anger and persecution when Bab-ud-Din's teachings turned out to be inconsistent with the Qur'an. He was executed in 1850, along with many of his followers, but predicted before his death that another man would come after him who would establish a new religion. Those followers who were not killed were exiled to Baghdad, where in 1863, one of them, Hu-sayn Ali, proclaimed he was the foretold one and took the name Bahaullah, meaning “glory of God." Those who believed him took the name Baha'i. This group was forcibly moved around the Middle East for years until eventually arriving in Acre, near present-day Haifa, Israel. Bahaullah was imprisoned the rest of his life, but wrote a number of books and letters and sent out missionaries to spread his message. When he died in 1892, he was succeeded by his son Abbas Effendi, who took the name Abdul Baha, meaning “Servant of Baha." He continued his father's work of writing, was released from prison in 1908, and began to travel widely in Europe and North America, proclaiming the Baha'i message and organizing local assemblies of followers. Baha'i leadership passed to his grandson Shoghi Effendi in 1921, who continued this work until his death in 1957. Thereafter, leadership ceased to be hereditary and was handed over to an elected body chosen from the now global Baha'i community. ...
