Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 11, 2025 is: darling DAHR-ling noun Darling can refer to a dearly loved person or to someone who is liked very much by a person or group. It can also mean “a kind and helpful person” as in, “Be a darling and carry this inside for me, would you?” // Our baby grandchild is just the sweetest little darling. // The actor has become a darling of the entertainment industry in both film and music. See the entry > Examples: “Rocking a BAPE hoodie and a slight nervousness, Jorjiana performed a freestyle and her most popular song, ‘ILBB2.' And then boom: There's no such thing as an overnight success, but it did seem as if Jorjiana was a social media darling by the next day.” — Damien Scott, Billboard, 20 Feb. 2025 Did you know? The opening lines of the rock band Wilco's song “My Darling,” sung from the perspective of a parent calming their sleepless child, demonstrate a very common use of the word darling: “Go back to sleep now, my darling / And I'll keep all the bad dreams away.” Darling is an ancient word, traceable all the way back to the Old English noun dēorling, which was formed by attaching the suffix -ling to the adjective dēore, the ancestor of dear, which describes that which is regarded very affectionately or fondly, is highly valued or esteemed, or is beloved. Darling, as in “my darling,” is often used as a term of endearment, whether for a child or a sweetheart, but it can also be used as a synonym of the noun favorite, as in “the word darling has proven itself a darling of songwriters for many centuries.”

This week Tee is thrilled to welcome Andrea Dahr for a chat about the life-changing power of switching to clean products. Andrea is a clean living advocate and founder of Switch Natural a revolutionary app that helps women & men live cleaner lives by altering daily product purchases and quickly and easily identifying any potentially harmful ingredients or toxic chemicals while providing relevant research and product information. When Andrea found herself in a high-risk pregnancy with twins in 2014, she was determined to eliminate additional health risks by switching to non-toxic cosmetics, cleaning products, and kids products. Upon learning that these products are largely unregulated, Andrea started educating herself on ingredients and avoiding those associated with adverse health effects. Tee and Andrea's chat highlights the misleading nature of ‘clean' labels, the cumulative exposure to toxins, and the hidden dangers of ingredients listed as 'fragrance.' Andrea also offers practical tips for reducing indoor pollutants, choosing non-toxic household and personal care items, and understanding ingredient lists. The episode also contrasts U.S. and European chemical regulations and emphasizes the need for incremental changes and community support to reduce toxic loads and make healthier, informed choices. Al-Insan ("Human") (alternative names: al-Dahr, "Endless time", Hal Ata, "Has There Not come") is the 76th chapter of the Quran, with 31 verses Recitation by Muhammad A hadith narrated by Abu Hurayra said that Muhammad used to recite Al-Insan together with As-Sajdah (chapter 32 of the Quran) for the early morning prayer (fajr) every Friday This report also appears in Tafsir Ibn Kathir The Noble Quran 1 Has there not been over man a period of time, when he was nothing to be mentioned? 2 Verily, We have created man from Nutfah drops of mixed semen (discharge of man and woman), in order to try him, so We made him hearer, seer 3 Verily, We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful 4 Verily, We have prepared for the disbelievers iron chains, iron collars, and a blazing Fire 5 Verily, the Abrar (pious, who fear Allah and avoid evil), shall drink a cup (of wine) mixed with water from a spring in Paradise called Kafur 6 A spring wherefrom the slaves of Allah will drink, causing it to gush forth abundantly 7 They (are those who) fulfill (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil will be wide-spreading 8. And they give food, inspite of their love for it (or for the love of Him), to Miskin (poor), the orphan, and the captive, 9 (Saying): “We feed you seeking Allah's Countenance only. We wish for no reward, nor thanks from you 10 “Verily, We fear from our Lord a Day, hard and distressful, that will make the faces look horrible (from extreme dislikeness to it)” 11 So Allah saved them from the evil of that Day, and gave them Nadratan (a light of beauty) and joy 12 And their recompense shall be Paradise, and silken garments, because they were patient 13 Reclining therein on raised thrones, they will see there neither the excessive heat of the sun, nor the excessive bitter cold, (as in Paradise there is no sun and no moon) 14 And the shade thereof is close upon them, and the bunches of fruit thereof will hang low within their reach 15 And amongst them will be passed round vessels of silver and cups of crystal, 16 Crystal-clear, made of silver. They will determine the measure thereof according to their wishes 17 And they will be given to drink there a cup (of wine) mixed with Zanjabil (ginger, etc), 18 A spring there, called Salsabil 19 And round about them will (serve) boys of everlasting youth. If you see them, you would think them scattered pearls 20 And when you look there (in Paradise), you will see a delight (that cannot be imagined), and a great dominion 21 Their garments will be of fine green silk, and gold embroidery. They will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a pure drink 22 (And it will be said to them): “Verily, this is a reward for you, and your endeavour has been accepted” 23 Verily! It is We Who have sent down the Qur'an to you (O Muhammad ) by stages 24 Therefore be patient (O Muhammad ) and submit to the Command of your Lord (Allah, by doing your duty to Him and by conveying His Message to mankind), and obey neither a sinner nor a disbeliever among them 25 And remember the Name of your Lord every morning and afternoon [i.e. offering of the Morning (Fajr), Zuhr, and ‘Asr prayers] 26 And during night, prostrate yourself to Him (i.e. the offering of Maghrib and ‘Isha' prayers), and glorify Him a long night through (i.e. Tahajjud prayer) 27 Verily! These (disbelievers) love the present life of this world, and put behind them a heavy Day (that will be hard) 28 It is We Who created them, and We have made them of strong built. And when We will, We can replace them with others like them with a complete replacement 29 Verily! This (Verses of the Qur'an) is an admonition, so whosoever wills, let him take a Path to his Lord (Allah) 30 But you cannot will, unless Allah wills. Verily, Allah is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise 31 He will admit to His Mercy whom He will and as for the Zalimun, (polytheists, wrong-doers, etc) He has prepared a painful torment

“How long do we keep pretending that capitalism works? How long are we going to keep pretending that there is such a thing as objectivity? How long are we going to keep pretending that we're not in a runaway climate crisis? Systems are literally collapsing – the UK is in massive crisis, the United States is in massive crisis. These countries are seen as the leaders of the western world in a lot of ways and the reality is neither country is even a democracy anymore. We're a corporatocracy at best.“What happens in countries where there's not legitimate journalism in the mainstream is you end up with a society that's overwhelmed with information. In the United States, huge swaths of the country can't even tell truth from fiction, which is something that Hannah Arendt in Origins of Totalitarianism warned: the best subject for totalitarian rule is not someone with a certain political bias, but someone who literally just can't tell truth from fiction anymore.”Dahr Jamail is an award-winning journalist and author, who was one of the few independent journalists to report extensively from the ground during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Dahr later became a climate reporter, tracking climate disruption around the world and collating his knowledge in the wonderful book, The End of Ice.Dahr joined me to discuss what's going wrong with journalism and how to create a journalism which can respond to the climate crisis. We discuss information pollution in the mainstream media, the fallacy of objectivity, the corruption of profit-maximising goals, self-selecting biases, and how the abject failures of the mainstream media have disempowered, disengaged and confused populaces around the world—making them ripe for manipulation by populists.Planet: Critical investigates why the world is in crisis—and what to do about it.© Rachel Donald Get full access to Planet: Critical at www.planetcritical.com/subscribe

Al-Insan ("Man") (alternative names: al-Dahr, "Endless time", Hal Ata, "Has There Not come") is the 76th chapter (surah) of the Quran with 31 verses (ayat). According to most scholars of the Islamic tradition, the chapter is a Medinan surah, i.e. it was revealed during the Medinan phase of Muhammad's prophethood. Some commentators say that verse 24 was an exception and was revealed in Mecca, and others say that verses 23–31 were revealed in Mecca. Yet others, a minority, say that the entire chapter was revealed in Mecca, thus classifying it as a Meccan surah.[1] Most Shia sources and some Sunni ones linked the revelation of the verses 5–22—which discuss "the pious" (al-abrar) and the rewards that await them[2]—to an experience of the family of Ali (Muhammad's son-in-law) and his wife Fatimah. According to this account, the family fasted for three days to fulfill a vow they had made. In each evening, when the family was about to break their fast, a needy person knocked on their door asking for food. The family gave food to each of them. The family had so little food that this charity meant that they had no food left and had only water for the evening. On the fourth day, Muhammad met with the family and saw them in dire hunger. According to the account, at this point Gabriel revealed the verses and congratulated Muhammad for having such a family. This account appears in several Quranic exegesis (tafsir), including Al-Qurtubi's Tafsir, Shaykh Tabarsi's Majma' al-Bayan and Mahmud al-Alusi's Ruh al-Ma'ani.[3] --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rozi-irfan-rosyadhi/support

In this episode we speak with Dahr Jamail. In late 2003, weary of the overall failure of the US media to accurately report on the realities of the war in Iraq for the Iraqi people, Dahr Jamail went to the Middle East to report on the war himself, where he has spent more than one year in Iraq as one of only a few independent US journalists in the country. Dahr has also reported from Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. He has also reported extensively on veterans' resistance against US foreign policy, and is now focusing on anthropogenic climate disruption and the environment. Dahr's stories have been published with Truthout, Inter Press Service, Tom Dispatch, The Sunday Herald in Scotland, The Guardian, Foreign Policy in Focus, Le Monde, Le Monde Diplomatique, The Huffington Post, The Nation, The Independent, and Al Jazeera, among others. Dahr is currently and has been a feature writer for Truthout.org for five years, and his climate feature page there is titled ‘Climate Disruption Dispatches‘. His writing has been translated into French, Polish, German, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic and Turkish. On radio as well as television, Dahr has reported for Democracy Now! and Al-Jazeera, and has appeared on the BBC, NPR, and numerous other stations around the globe. Dahr's reporting has earned him numerous awards, including the 2008 Martha Gellhorn Award for Journalism, The Lannan Foundation Writing Residency Fellowship, the James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism, the Joe A. Callaway Award for Civic Courage, and five Project Censored awards. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Izzy Award, in 2018 the Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM) at Ithaca College awarded Dahr an Izzy for his “path-breaking and in-depth reporting in 2017” exposing “environmental hazards and militarism.” The Izzy Award, presented for outstanding achievement in independent media, is named in memory of I.F. “Izzy” Stone, the dissident journalist who launched I.F. Stone's Weekly in 1953 and challenged McCarthyism, racism, war and government deceit. The End of Ice is one of Smithsonian Magazine's 10 Best Science Books of 2019, and was a finalist for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award in 2020.https://www.dahrjamail.net/ Track: Fusion — KV [Audio Library Release] Music provided by Audio Library Plus Watch: https://youtu.be/gp613GReEo4 Free Download / Stream: https://alplus.io/fusion
[Intro: 8:47] In this episode, I speak with dear friend, healer, and counselor Barbara Cecil. This is a griefful time. We are witnessing systems fail and a deep fracturing of our collective shared experience of reality, particularly for those embedded within the dominant culture of North America, to which many of us are tied to. More and more, time seems to be quickening and grinding to a stuttering halt, all at once. Barbara and I deepen our exploration into the terrain of our current predicament, continuing with the themes journalist Dahr Jamail and I discussed in our recent interview released a few weeks ago. We discuss what it means to really be present in this time of trouble, and how vital it is to know how to ground oneself and (re)connect with our intuition. It is from this place that we may then proceed, as this wisdom and skill will prove to be increasingly needed as we meet our time of many endings. Barbara Cecil is the author of ‘Coming Into Your Own: A Woman's Guide Through Life Transitions.’ Barbara Cecil’s Master’s degree in speech communication and human relations has supported her in her calling to assist individuals, groups, teams, and organizations toward the full manifestation of their creative potential. This is a segment of episode #257 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Today Is Better Than Tomorrow: A Time Of Endings; Shades Of Denial w/ Dahr Jamail.” Listen to the full episode: https://bit.ly/LBWjamail3 Learn more about Dahr Jamail and Stan Rushworth’s new book project ‘The Changing Earth’: https://www.thechangingearth.net I can imagine most of you listening to this will recognize what Dahr and I both feel and know in this time we are in. Many of us are beginning to come to terms with the reality we have been dealt — a global predicament that includes a pandemic that won’t soon leave us, economic crisis and social unrest that will only worsen as the months pass on, and nonlinear climate disruption that continues to rear its ugly head, portending horrors that are only beginning to make themselves a reality. And we know, from these trends, this breakdown will only accelerate as the months and years pass. As Dahr states, citing his time in Iraq, “today is better than tomorrow.” Dahr Jamail is an award-winning journalist who (formerly) reported on climate disruption and environmental issues for the online publication Truthout. He is the author of multiple books, including ‘The End Of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption.’ Currently, Dahr is collaborating with elder and teacher Stan Rushworth on a new book project, titled ‘The Changing Earth: Indigenous Voices from Turtle Island’, which is "an innovative work of research and reportage that will present, via powerful and intimate encounters, the perspective of Indigenous peoples of the United States and Canada on the Earth's climate and interrelated Covid-19 emergencies."
