Was it accident, or murder? On a frosty Christmas morning, the household of Septimus Tonks awakens to a grim discovery: their patriarch lies lifeless beside his wireless set, seemingly electrocuted. Chief Detective-Inspector Alleyn arrives to find more than just a tragic accident; he finds a family simmering with resentment, secrets festering beneath a veneer of festive cheer, and a tangled web of motives lurking within the unforgiving walls of their home. The precision of the crime contrasts with the messiness of the people who surrounded the unhappy patriarch. I invite you to listen as we untangle the threads of this domestic drama and unravel the truth behind "Death on the Air". "Death on the Air" was initially published in 1936. It was subsequently included in the short story collection, Death on the Air and Other Stories, published by HarperCollins Publishers in Great Britain in 1995. The collection also features the Alleyn stories, "I Can Find My Way Out," and "Chapter and Verse: The Little Copplestone Mystery," along with two biographical essays by Marsh, "Roderick Alleyn" and "Portrait of Troy." ⭐ Join my Patreon ⭐ https://patreon.com/barcud Go here for a library of ad-free stories, a monthly members only story and early access to the regular stories I put out. ✨Join us at the 2024 Empowerment Ecosystem Summit! Assessment and identity might not seem like a logical pairing on the surface, but they are a powerhouse combo for learning and professional growth. Everyone has an assessment story that we carry into the school space and those experiences determine what we believe to be true about ourselves, learners, and learning. Today Natalie reconnects with her childhood friend, Karley Alleyn, to explore the shared childhood experience that was fundamental to their assessment identities and what Karley learned about the role of authentic mentorship in its continued development during her Masters research. Show Notes: Natalie and Karley's shared history of competitive rhythmic gymnastics is the foundation of their assessment identity to “please, perform, and perfect” and a focus on external rewards. Assessment identity is our understanding of assessment through our experiences as a student, educator, and as a human being. Karley chose narrative inquiry as the method for her assessment identity research as story is the foundation of our identities. This topic is important for all educators as it is an invitation to courageously look inward and share who you truly are. Authentic mentorship opportunities, not coerced or forced partnerships, are a powerful space for educators to develop their assessment identity as they enter the profession. An important first step in exploring assessment identity is to go inward and ask, “What was my first transformative assessment experience and how has it impacted my teaching practice?”

This time Andy & Martin delve into Ngaio Marsh's Alleyn Mysteries which aired on the BBC in the early Nineties. Having watched the 1990 pilot 'Artists in Crime' and a 1993 episode 'Final Curtain' they are able to compare the performances of Simon Williams and Patrick Malahide in the title role. Belinda Lang is thankfully a constant as his artist 'friend' Agatha Troy, as is the characterful William Simons as Fox. While underwhelmed by the pilot, they are bowled over by the OTT Final Curtain especially due to the presence of Graham Crowden , Eleanor Bron, Michael Sheard and Michael Bilton and many more. Crowden even threatens to out-chew Soldeed here! If you like your murder mysteries, campy, period and full of over-the-top artist or actor-y types this is the drama and podcast episode for you. Their exploration meanders as usual as they also remember Moondial, M*A*S*H, 2 Point 4 Children and Victoria Wood Presents. There's even a guest appearance from Ru Paul. We also have a question to ask you all, inspired by this episode: "Do you design for the theatre?' Enjoy!

On this day in Tudor history, 1st September 1566, Edward Alleyn, a major figure in the Elizabethan theatre, was born in the parish of St Botolph without Bishopsgate, London, and baptised the following day. In today's talk, historian Claire Ridgway shares some facts about Edward Alleyn, including his personal life, the plays he was involved in, his theatre investments, and his desire to be appointed master of the bears, bulls and mastiff dogs! You can see this podcast as a video at the following link:https://youtu.be/dNhFgZoym1w Also on this day in Tudor history, 1st September 1532, in a special ceremony at Windsor Castle, King Henry VIII elevated his sweetheart Anne Boleyn to the peerage by making her Marquess of Pembroke. This was a hugely significant act because Henry VIII made Anne a marquess in her own right, granted the title to her and her heirs male (legitimate or not) and gave her a title associated with his father, Henry VII, and uncle, Jasper Tudor. It also made her a rather wealthy woman, and a fitting consort for their trip to Calais to meet with King Francis I of France. Find out more about what happened on this day in 1532, who was there, and just what Anne Boleyn was given by King Henry VIII, in last year’s video - https://youtu.be/AArtnjF6OlQ

We discuss chapters 24-37 of Money in the Morgue by Stella Duffy and Ngaio Marsh. As the conspiracy behind the crime unravels, two separate mysteries bubble to the surface, taking Alleyn and his allies beneath the hospital into tunnels that would have Father Knox scratching his head. We also talk with Dr. Jamie Bernthall-Hooker about his studies of the golden age, the reworking Stella Duffy did of Alleyn, and the stage implications of Money in the Morgue.
We discuss chapters 12-23 of Money in the Morgue by Stella Duffy and Ngaio Marsh. As Alleyn takes each and every suspect in for questioning, the puzzle only gets more and more unclear. As the personal struggles of the cast start to take Alleyn's mind away from the case, can Flex piece together a solution sane enough to work?

Most of what modern scholars know about the early modern English theatre comes from the study of the Henslowe and Alleyn manuscripts at Dulwich College. This podcast looks at documents from the archive, now digitised at www.henslowe-alleyn.org.uk.
