All human life is here. Dogma, closed minds, modern slavery, net zero and why Peter will never enter the House of Lords - though he will take tea there – and why you'll never find letters after his name. Sarah asks why Labour are pushing for a new deal with China at the risk of human rights violation and why did Margaret Thatcher think you could drive the 5 plus miles from Downing Street to Dulwich – turns out, outriders on motorbikes help. And both wonder when did the honours system become such an ‘inverted pyramid of piffle'? Word for word. In this special episode, contemporary artist Sara Shamma paints experiences of conflict, modern slavery, and hopes for postwar reconstruction, travelling between Syria, Lebanon, and London, in their series, World Civil War Portraits (2015). *Content Warning* Syria has a ‘young' or ‘short' art history, in Western/European terms. The country's first galleries and art schools appeared in the 1960s, offering little contemporary arts education or practice. Working within - and rebelling against - these institutions, Damascus-born artist Sara Shamma taught themselves to paint ‘as an Old/Dutch Master', referencing the likes of Rembrandt and Rubens in their large-scale, expressive, portraits. In their 2023 exhibition, Bold Spirits, Sara's figurative paintings were displayed in conversation with these figures, at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. And now, 25 years after graduating, the artist returns to the National Museum of Damascus with a survey spanning their personal and artistic journeys through Lebanon and the UK in the twelve years since the start of the civil war. ‘I decided to keep one or two paintings from each project, to exhibit them all in Syria when the time was right,' says Sara. ‘Now, it's time for them to come home.' In this conversation from 2023, when Sara was still living in London, the artist describes her decades of migrations between Dulwich and Damascus. Sara first left Syria for work, in 2000, with exhibitions in Britain as part of the the BP Portrait Prize, and a British Council partnership with Coventry, a city she admires as a model for postwar reconstruction. In 2016, she relocated to London on an Exceptional Talent Visa but, during this period, she continued to travel to her homeland frequently, working from her studio in the city, and engaging with wider Arab art communities. Through global exhibitions, Sara is now one of Syria's most internationally recognised artists. We touch on Syria's changing position, as part of the Ottoman Empire and a French Mandate, during the 20th century, and the permeable borders that permitted her refuge in the years of President Bashar al-Assad's violent regime. Sara describes her interest in biology, visiting butchers and mortuaries during her studies, and their ‘surrealist eye' on everyday life. We discuss her research into modern slavery, trafficking, and rape cultures, speaking with women during their time as artist-in-residence with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King's College London (KCL). Sara explains how she translates oral testimonies and traumatic experiences through her artistic practice, and why music is her universal language, travellling from Sufi Asia, to the blues of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. This episode was recorded live as part of PEACE FREQUENCIES, a 24 hour live radio broadcast to mark International Human Rights Day in December 2023, and 75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This week: Wild Wes. Ahead of next week's vote on whether to legalise assisted dying, Health Secretary Wes Streeting is causing trouble for Keir Starmer, writes Katy Balls in the magazine this week. Starmer has been clear that he doesn't want government ministers to be too outspoken on the issue ahead of a free vote in Parliament. But Streeting's opposition is well-known. How much of a headache is this for Starmer? And does this speak to wider ambitions that Wes might have? Katy joins the podcast to discuss, alongside Labour MP Steve Race. Steve explains why he plans to vote in favour of the change in the law next week (00:57). Then: how concerned should we be about medical misinformation? President-elect Donald Trump has announced vaccine sceptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as his pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services in the US. In the magazine this week, Matt Ridley explains that it's not the man himself that's as interesting, as the reasons how he has ended up in such a position: scientific misinformation has fuelled his rise. So how concerned should we be about medical misinformation? Firstly, Matt joined the podcast to explain his thesis and why reactions to the covid pandemic are to blame (16:24). Later, Sander van der Linden, professor of social psychology at the University of Cambridge, also joins the podcast to discuss his concerns and how susceptible we are here in Britain to misinformation (23:46). And finally: did you know that crude graffiti has a storied history? Harry Mount examines the notorious penis gang that has appeared in Dulwich, daubing penises across trees. Whatever you think of such graffiti, scribbling phalluses, and even erotic art, are actually as old as time – from ancient Rome to India. What's the line between graffiti and erotic art? And should Westerners be less prudish when confronted with these images? Harry joins the podcast alongside Indian academic Dr Alka Pande (30:50). Hosted by William Moore and Lara Prendergast. Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

Oi, bellend, if you liked the pod give us a rating, a review, send us some love. The fun and games return with former international rugby referee Nigel Owens replacing Junglist musician General Levy (no one has ever said that before) for the drinking game, Lew loses his shit at the Casualty theme tune via Endel, a dubious world record at Chicago, and a sad end to the Camille Wikipedia story. We give 5 star influencer shoe reviewers a good shoeing, we drown a few in their free ice baths, and the snake oil is thrown in the bin before being thrown in the sea along with Parkrun Tourism posters wondering if we are going to Slovenia and Austria or getting lost in Dulwich, and the Stay Toxic guy fucks up the intro.John invites Felicity Kendall to a Spoons curry night bunk up, Baz's acorn sized bladder gets the better of him, Stefan goes bananas, Strava goes down, and Knees makes a red card choice of celebrities who ran the London Marathon. Now then, now then! And we have a live question from Keith and Kyla who grace our lug holes with Flight of the Valkyries played on the Kazoo.Big up the Chestnut Massive! Gola on Bullseye!

Phoenix represents a group that focused on SDG 5, Gender Equality. Ryan and Candace are representing a group that created a film about SDG 13, Climate Action, with a specific focus on plastic pollution. It was interesting that, as I was recording final thoughts for this episode during postproduction, I mistakenly said that Ryan in Candace's film was focusing on SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production. Rather than edit this out, I chose to leave it because I think it is a great example of how so many of the Global Goals are interconnected and how when we design solutions we can have a broad impact in our local community and, by sharing our stories, hopefully inspire others to do the same across the globe.

"The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Delighted to welcome legendary Event Producer & Creative Director Dan Tsu to 'The Clearing'. Dan was passed the "Golden Baton" to be here in the 'Clearing' by Performance Poet Toby Thompson.Dan is an Event Producer, Live Promoter, International Facilitator & Teacher of Event Management. Co-founder of the infamous Glastonbury Festival venue "Rum Shack", he has being hosting innovative and independent live shows for the last 15 years. Dan holds a reputation for championing and collaborating with young talent, working closely with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Akala & Kate Tempest, to name but some of many many more.Dan is also founder & director of the Live Events & Education company Lyrix Organix: A design consultancy for groundbreaking programmes, working collaboratively with major youth organisations and charities. Lyrix Organix uses rap, poetry, music & and cross-disciplinary approaches to amplify social action. When Dan Tsu describes himself as a ‘Jack of all Trades' he does not begin to do himself justice. As his name may suggest, Dan is mixed heritage: Anglo-Chinese, Singapore British, Hong Kong Chinese. At school Dan began to hone a particular skill in being able to be both an 'outlier' and an 'inlier', able to get the best from relationships around him. He made friends easily, with an ability to be able to move freely between a variety of different ethnic and religious groups, who all tended to sit in different corners of the classroom and not necessarily mix with each other in the playground. Dan was a free spirit, without an obvious ego, therefore able to weave his way into all kinds of diverse and interesting circles. He has always been inspired by words, poetry and by music like hip-hop and rap. His signature venue "Rum Shack" at the Glastonbury Festival is particularly important to him, as is Glastonbury implicitly for its unique authenticity & ‘irreplaceable and indescribable' spirit.Dan created early opportunities for the now superstar singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and the rising star performance-poet, Toby Thompson, as well as scores of others. Dan does not speak Chinese but he is still inspired by the iconic Chinese artist and activist Ai Wei Wei. Dan's personal goal is to ‘change the world in small ways.'As a facilitator, educator, events producer and creative director, Dan Tsu is creating his own dynamic legacy, on a daily basis. He is delighted when people acknowledge the difference he has made to their lives - which people regularly do now, in random encounters, on average now once or twice a week!Dan sees himself as a Londoner. Happy both in the darkest corner of a lively nightclub or in the solitude of ancient woodland in Dulwich. An extraordinary & distinctive story indeed.Enjoy!Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. The Art Newspaper's annual report on museum visitor figures around the world has been published. We talk to Lee Cheshire, who co-edited the report, and to Charles Saumarez Smith, a former director or chief executive of three London museums and galleries—the National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery and Royal Academy of Arts—about how important the figures are to museums and whether they are a valid gauge of institutions' success. The exhibition Manet/Degas opened at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris this week, before travelling later in the year to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Ben Luke visits the show in Paris and speaks to Laurence des Cars, the former director of the Musée d'Orsay and now president-director of the Musée du Louvre, and Stéphane Guégan, the co-curator of the exhibition. And in London, a show of the paintings of Berthe Morisot, the pioneering Impressionist with artistic and familial connections to Manet and Degas, has opened at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. This episode's Work of the Week is Morisot's Woman at Her Toilette (1875-80). Lois Oliver, the curator of the exhibition in Dulwich, tells us about this pivotal picture.Manet/Degas, Musée d'Orsay, Paris, until 23 July; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 24 September-7 January 2024Berthe Morisot: Shaping Impressionism, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, until 10 September, Musée Marmottan Monet later in 2023 (dates to be announced). Oobah Butler is a professional prankster. In 2017, he managed to convince the London restaurant scene that he was the owner of the coolest, most popular place in town. A place that didn't exist. Despite having never served a single customer, this is how The Shed at Dulwich became the No. 1 rated restaurant in London on TripAdvisor. A Somethin' Else & Sony Music Entertainment production. A cold Tuesday night in south London, a late team arrival, a £12 burger and chips but three points and a goal and assist for Coulthirst!
In this special episode, we are delighted to have three students from Dulwich College (Singapore), Rumi Lorenzo Aquino, Jessica Boa and Charlotte Chloe Cretot sharing with us more with their views on sustainability and how it has an effect on the younger generation and future economy. Although a number of students are involved in sustainability in lots of different ways, these three have all been recommended hiring by teachers at the college, which is why they have this opportunity to speak to us all. The students focused on how sustainability begins at the bottom level and how promoting this topic through education could be a good place to start in raising awareness. These students hope to see more sustainable practices in the industry in the near future and to raise awareness one step at a time. In this podcast, we are delighted to have Jacob Martin, Deputy Head of College of Dulwich College Singapore who shares with us more about the Compassionate Systems Framework and how it is implemented in our current education system. The Compassionate Systems Framework's fundamental goal is to cultivate "compassionate integrity" in students and teachers—alignment between how we think, feel, and act as a result of a growing understanding of interconnectedness. So there are a set of wellbeing, mindful tools, which are also used in the classroom, in conjunction with those systems thinking tools that unpack those environmental issues. So it's a combination of those two things, the learning tools we use in the classroom, and then a set of practices around mindfulness, and also compassionate practice which we practice with our students. When they're experiencing these sorts of lessons. And it's, through the framework which has actually changed our culture, more than any other aspect. The Shed at Dulwich. Sounds like a trendy London restaurant, doesn't it? It was. Kind of. Turns out it really was a shed. In Dulwich. But there were other things that made it different from every other restaurant ever.
Founder of the innovative culture platform The Wick, Katy Wickremesinghe, joins us for this week's episode of Young at Art for a dive into her career as an art consultant and leader in business. Katy shares with us the story of why she founded The Wick, as well as her art consultancy company KTW London, which aims to show businesses the importance of art in everyday life. She discusses her role as a trustee of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, and why public art is so important in our everyday lives.Katy gives us a private tour of the art in her home (which she fabulously refers to as the ‘Wicks Fondazione') and explains how the art that she collects shows the close relationships between her and some of her favourite artists. The episode ends reflecting on the events of the last two years – the global pandemic and the war in Ukraine – and Katy tells us why art is so important to her in times of uncertainty.Katy mentions two exhibitions in the episode, firstly Dulwich picture Gallery's exhibition Reframed: The Woman in the Window (tickets can be purchased here) and also London's dedicated public art walk, The Line, (more information can be found here). Harry Stevens is the host of Young at Art and is a 21-year-old art and interiors obsessive passionate about opening up the art world to all. At Young at Art Harry speaks to the tastemakers who are defining a new image of art and design today, with new episodes out weekly. Shadow Education Minister Helen Hayes says it's not about the ministerial code - Conservative MPs need to refer the Prime Minister to the standards committee. The Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood tells Bloomberg's Caroline Hepker and Yuan Potts, Boris Johnson's government is 'utterly vacant'. Plus, how would Europe cope with the sudden termination of Russian gas and what would be the knock-on effect for the U.K.? Caspian Conran from energy consultancy Baringa Partners tells us in the short-term the mutual dependence will probably continue, as the costs would be so prohibitive for both sides. Baroness Floella Benjamin DBE joins Clare for a walk around one of her favourite woodlands in London. Starting in Dulwich College where her mother worked in the laundry and later her son attended, Floella and husband Keith head off into the woods on a rainy March day. Their walk takes them up from the College past the Golf range and into the woods where parakeets dart among the trees shrieking and providing a dash of bright emerald green on a grey day. Along the way Floella talks about her life and all her achievements. She was born in Trinidad and emigrated with her family in the 1960s settling in London. After leaving school she worked in a bank before becoming an actress and then getting her break into children's television in Play School. The education and wellbeing of children is one of her greatest priorities and she is hugely proud of all that she has achieved in this field. The walk takes them along routes she has walked for many years from when her own children were small. She and Keith are great walkers and love to hike in the Lake District but when that's not possible, a walk in these woods is a sanctuary in the middle of the city - a place to relax, think and destress. Producer: Maggie Ayre

This week we remove our legs from the vulgar gaze of public and refuse to have a haircut as we pay tribute to the quite wonderful Michael Bentine's Potty Time! First there was the Goon Show, then The Bumblies, then It's A Square World and then, erm, Rentadick, but after that there was Michael Bentine's Potty Time which enchanted children and adults alike in the 1970s with Potty adaptations of classic works of literature and famous events from history. Guesting on the show this week are Andrew Trowbridge and Lisa Parker, hosts of the ever-popular retro television podcast Round The Archives, who joined Tyler (who's actually seen episodes of The Gnomes of Dulwich on New Zealand TV don't you know) with tales to tell of Potty Time and the semi-Peruvian polymath. Please follow on the Twitters @goonshowpod – Lisa and Andrew can be found @lisacartman and @Roundthearchiv1
Ratings, reviews, stars and points – we all strongly rely on online reviews when we shop online. But can we really trust them? And is there something we can do to make them more reliable? The research of Paolo Turrini, associate professor at the university of Warwick, is focussed on mechanism design of social networks. In this episode, he explains why ratings are so important in online markets, how they are often manipulated, and how clever game theoretic considerations can make them more trustworthy. In the interview, Paolo mentions the spoof restaurant “the shed at Dulwich”, which made to the top of the TripAdvisor list despite being non-existent. You can check out their homepage here: https://www.theshedatdulwich.com/menu You can find more on Paolo' research on his homepage: https://www.dcs.warwick.ac.uk/~pturrini/

In the eighth episode of The Food Coma Podcast my guest is Andy Gerry, co-owner and co-chef of the Highroller Lobster Co. in Portland, Maine. Together we go on a journey of discovery, the most significant of which is our apparent age difference and, by default, the actual shows we've watched religiously. Luckily, we quickly find common ground and can both agree on the fact that Hot Ones is awesome and that Gordon Ramsay couldn't possibly throw up as much as he claims he does on Kitchen Nightmares. Also mentioned is Guy Fieri, The Shed at Dulwich, and the legendary Slap Chop. MANY thanks go to our sponsors: Tourmaline Spring Water Amethyst Elixir Company Living Nutz.
