Today on the Basketball Manitoba podcast, we have Jeff Laping.A graduate of St. Paul's High School, he has been involved with the school's basketball program since 1995 and has coached the varsity boys since 2000.He has led the Crusaders to five conference championships, 12 final four appearances, and four provincial championships. Under his leadership, St. Paul's has produced 25 Canadian college or USports level players.He has served as an assistant coach with the University of Manitoba Bisons and has coached multiple provincial teams and with Canada Basketball's Centre for Performance. He is the former president of the Manitoba Basketball Coaches Association and has received numerous accolades, including AAAA Boys Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2014, and the Peter Dyck Award for Coaching Excellence in 2010.

He is a graduate of Kildonan East Collegiate and then went on to play basketball at the University of Manitoba for 3 years. He coached the Manitoba Provincial Team as an assistant coach 6 times and a head coach once.He's been an assistant coach with the University of Manitoba Bisons Men's and Women's teams for 6 seasons and was an assistant at Red River College for 6 years. He was on the coaching staff with the Winnipeg Cyclone for 1 year. Currently, he is an Assistant Coach with Scott Martin at Canadian Mennonite University, a role he's held for 6 years. He was also a Basketball Manitoba board member for 2 years.

She graduated from Nelson High School in Burlington, Ontario, where she was named athlete of the year.She played basketball and volleyball and competed in track and field, where she held an Ontario record for the high jump for 10 years. She went on to graduate from the University of Manitoba. She was a U SPORTS / CIS official for over 22 years and officiated the U SPORTS Nationals four times. She officiated at the Canada Basketball National Championships five times and was a Referee Coach at nationals 8 times. She is currently the Manitoba Provincial Supervisor and Board Member for the Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials (MABO). She is currently one of MABO's lead clinicians and evaluators and represented the Canadian Basketball Officials Commission on the Jr. NBA Canadian Leadership Council.

He's a Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame member, Class of 2005 Beyond his playing days, he has dedicated over 30 years to officiating basketball at various levels, including local, provincial, and U SPORTS national competitions, 3 times, and has been an official of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.Most recently, he has been a member of the Pathway to Excellence committee, whose mission is to develop up-and-coming officials to become U SPORTS and International officials.

He transferred to play his last two years with the University of Manitoba Bisons and helped the program return to excellence, earning their first trip to nationals in 30 years after securing a silver medal in the Canada West playoffs in 2018He then played internationally in Norway, Australia, Sweden, Ukraine, Spain, and the United Kingdom for six seasons.In 2024, he retired from playing and was named the Head Coach of the Brandon University Women's Basketball Team.
Today, on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Sara Gillis. Sara has been a cornerstone of basketball in Manitoba for over 40 years, contributing as a player, coach, official, and advocate for the game. Her basketball journey began in Brandon, where she played for Earl Oxford Junior High and Crocus Plains High School. She also played for the Manitoba Provincial Team for three years and earned a silver medal at the 1985 Canada Games. She then went on to play at Brandon University with the Bobcats for five seasons. During her time there, she was named Brandon University's Female Athlete of the Year in 1984-85. After playing, she transitioned to coaching at first at Garden Valley in Winkler and then going on to and build a powerhouse program at R.D. Parker Collegiate in Thompson, leading the Varsity Girls to four consecutive AAA provincial finals, including back-to-back championships in 2015 and 2016. Her impact in northern Manitoba extended beyond the court as she organized clinics, camps, and leagues to grow the game at the grassroots level. She has also served as an assistant coach for Manitoba's under-17 female team, worked with Basketball Manitoba's Targeted Athlete Program, and continues to advocate for rural basketball initiatives and increasing women in coaching through her role as the President of Basketball Manitoba. She has received the Mike Spack Lifetime Achievement Award and has been inducted into the Brandon University Dick and Verda McDonald Sports Wall of Fame.
Today, on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Murray Brown. He is one of the most accomplished coaches in Manitoba's history, coaching for over 34 years and more than 1,100 games as a head coach with the Oak Park Varsity girl's basketball team. During that time, he won seven provincial titles in 1998, 1999, 2004, and 2013, with a “three-peat” from 2017-2019. He has been named MBCA basketball coach of the year 7 times and MHSAA coach in 2013. He retired from coaching at Oak Park in 2022 and is currently an assistant with the Winnipeg Wesmen Women's basketball team.

In the summer of 2022, we were fortunate to sit down with Chad for over an hour as a guest on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast. In the episode, he details his journey through basketball and where it has taken him from Winnipeg to around the world. We remember him for his infectious attitude towards life and for being an amazing ambassador for Manitoba and Canada. _______________________________________________ Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Chad Posthumus. Chad is a professional basketball player who is a graduate of River East Collegiate, where he was recognized as an All-Manitoban and as one of the top five high school players in Canada. He represented the Manitoba Provincial Team 3 times. After high school, he was recruited to play at the University of British Columbia. He transferred to Howard Community College (Columbia, Maryland) and finally to Morehead State in Kentucky. He was 4th in the NCAA in rebounds and was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Third Team. He started his professional career with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Summer League. Since then, he has played in Japan, Argentina, China, the United States in the G-League, and Canada in the NBL and the CEBL. He has represented the Canadian National Team most recently at the FIBA AmeriCup 2022 in Brazil.
Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Robyn Boulanger. She was the 15U Female Manitoba Provincial Team Head Coach this past summer at Nationals in St John's, Newfoundland. She played basketball in high school at the University of Winnipeg Collegiate with the Anishinabe Pride Basketball Club, which her family started. She then played for the Centre for Permanence, Manitoba Provincial Team and represented her province at the North American Indigenous Games. After high school, she continued her basketball career at the University of Winnipeg with the Wesmen team. She was part of their 2021/2022 playoff run, where they won Silver Medals in both Canada West and U-Sports Nationals. Now, she uses her experience as an assistant coach for the Wesmen to help young players improve. She started Zaagi'idiwin Sport Performance, which helps athletes get better on and off the court by combining Indigenous knowledge with sports and movement.

Today, on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Lenin Mangaron. He graduated from Oak Park High School, where he was named an All-Manitoban and played for the Manitoba Provincial Team for four years. He then went on to play at the University of Manitoba, where he was named a GPAC Conference All-Star. He later transferred to the Brandon Bobcats basketball program for one year. The teams that he participated in were some of the first to break into the NABA and FBA national scene out of Winnipeg. After college, he played semi-professional basketball in the Philippines. After playing, he transitioned to coaching, a role he's been doing for over 23 years. He started with JV basketball at Elmwood and has coached at various levels, from junior High to Club basketball. He's been a leading figure in the program at Sargent Park School, where they have won many Provincial Championships over the years. There, he was awarded Co-Coach of the Year by Basketball Manitoba. He's coached at the Manitoba Provincial Team level as an assistant coach and as a head coach, and he is currently the 15U male head coach for 2024.

He graduated from Fort Richmond Collegiate and played college basketball at St. Joseph's University before transferring to the University of Colorado. He then went on a 12-year journey through the professional ranks, playing in Europe, Asia, and Australia and back home in Canada with the Winnipeg Thunder and Winnipeg Cyclone pro teams. He also had the opportunity to try out for the NBA with the Indiana Pacers and Denver Nuggets. He also represented Canada on the National stage at the World University Games and Jones Cups in Taipei, where he notably won a Silver Medal facing the United States. After playing, he stepped back into the Manitoba basketball community as a coach, spending time at the University, Provincial Team, high school, and club levels. He is currently the Technical Director at Basketball Manitoba, a position he's held for 13 years. Other notable achievements include… Big Eight Conference Select Team member in 1988. He graduated from Churchill High School and played at the University of Manitoba, where he was an All-Canadian and Captain of the team in 1972. His excellence on the court led to his selection for the Canadian National Team in 1972. Over the following five years, he represented Canada on the international stage, participating in prestigious events like the Pan Am Games in Mexico City, the World University Games in Moscow, and the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He also played for the St. Andrews Super Saints, where he achieved two national championships and was recognized as a Tournament All-Star four times. In 1996, he was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and in 2009, the Manitoba High School Sport Hall of Fame. She attended Vincent Massey Collegiate in Winnipeg before transferring to the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) in Ontario. Niyah represented the Manitoba Provincial Team, claiming two Bronze Medals for the province. She played college basketball at the University of Utah in the PAC 12 for 3 years and then played her senior season (times 2 due to Covid) at Wake Forest University in the ACC. She's represented the Canadian National Team at various stages since the age of 16. Darcy Coss has been a part of the basketball community for over twenty years. He was a top-ranked high school player who represented Glenlawn Collegiate and Team Manitoba at the 2001 Canada Games. He then played at the University of Manitoba for four years. After graduating, he continued giving back to the game by coaching and organizing club programs and provincial teams. He went on to become the Executive Director of the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association for six years. Most recently, he represented Winnipeg on the FIBA 3x3 World Tour as a player. He then went on to work for FIBA 3x3. After playing for just two years, he started coaching and refereeing, finding himself more drawn to that side of the game. For 11 years, he coached and refereed at the pre-national level before moving to Canada in May 2018. That summer, he took over the Men's Basketball program at Providence University Under his leadership, the Pilots clinched their first MCAC championship in 19 years and repeated as Champions this year with an undefeated season in the MCAC. Pierre has led multiple basketball camps in both Canada and France and has mentored several coaches to develop the game of basketball in his community. He then went on to play at Providence University College for three seasons. During his playing career, he received numerous awards, including the MCAC All-Conference Award and was NCCAA All-Conference Honorable Mention. His passion for basketball didn't stop After he finished playing, he went on to become the assistant coach of the Providence Women's Basketball Team for one year. From there, he took over as head coach, a role he's held now for 12 years. Under his leadership, the team has achieved numerous milestones, including winning the NIAC Championship in 2019, and he was named NIAC coach of the year. Additionally, he was named the MCAC Coach of the Year in 2023. He is a Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute graduate in Winnipeg, where he won a provincial championship and was ranked the number 1 player in the province. He played for the Manitoba Provincial Team program for 2 summers. He went on to play at the University of Winnipeg Wesmen. There he was Second Team All-Canadian two times Canada West Conference Rookie of the Year Canada West Conference First Team All-Star three times Canada West Conference Second Team All-Star once He finished his career with all-time records with the Wesmen. 1st in points 3rd in rebounds 1st in field goals 1st in assists 1st in steals He played on the Canadian U18 National Team and the University National Team. He then went on to play professionally in Iran for ten years. During that time, he represented the Iranian national team for two summers. He is now a Personal Trainer & Nutrition Coach, Attack Basketball Program Coordinator and head coach. Rashawn played college basketball at New Mexico State University and then transferred to the California University of Pennsylvania for one season before returning to Canada. He played his final three years at the University of Manitoba. During his final season in Manitoba, he led them to the most wins in school history (at the time) while playing in the Canada West Conference. While with the Bisons, he was named… Second Team All-Canadian Canada West First and Third Team All-Star University of Manitoba Male Athlete of the Year in 2019-20 Men's Basketball Team MVP After ending his university career, Browne was selected eighth overall in the 2020 Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) draft by the Saskatchewan Rattlers. As a rookie playing the CEBL Summer Series, he averaged 8.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds and was the runner-up for USPORTS Player of the Year. Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Xavier Smith. Xavier is a graduate of Sisler High School and played basketball at Lakeland College before transferring to Brandon University and finally to the University of Manitoba. He played for the Manitoba Provincial Team for three summers from 2002 to 2004. He returned to his alma mater Manitoba Bisons, to be an assistant coach from 2019 to 2021. Upon ending his college career with the Bisons in 2013, he played internationally at the 3x3 level. Since 2012, he has volunteered his time offering skill camps with community centres around the city and has been the SWISH Basketball program coordinator. Today on the Basketball Manitoba podcast, we have a very special guest, Todd MacCulloch. Todd is a Manitoba basketball legend. He attended Shaftsbury High School, where he helped lead the team to consecutive championships in 1993 and 1994. He was also a member of the Manitoba Provincial Team program for four summers, including at the 1993 Canada Summer Games, where he helped lead Manitoba to a victory over a Steve Nash-led Team British Columbia. He was heavily recruited from high school and decided to play at the University of Washington. He was named an All-Pac 10 First Team All-Star and led all NCAA Division 1 players in field goal percentage in his last three seasons. In 1999, he made Manitoba history by being selected 47th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA draft. He played in the NBA Finals two years in a row (2001 and 2002). However, after four seasons in the NBA, he was forced to retire prematurely because of a neuromuscular disorder that affected his feet. Internationally, he represented Canada 93 times. He won bronze at the 1995 Universiade Games In 1999, He won Silver at the FIBA Americas championship and qualified for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. In Sydney, Canada won its group defeating Yugoslavia but lost to eventual Silver Medalist France in the quarterfinals and finished seventh. This is the last time the Men's program has been at the Olympic Games. He rounded out his international career with a Bronze at the 2001 FIBA Americas in Argentina. He has been a great supporter of inner-city basketball programs in Winnipeg for over 20 years, with a program that has seen over 10,000 children participate that still bears his name to this day, the Todd MacCulloch Hoops School. He is a graduate of Providence College in Otterburne, Manitoba, where he lead his team to two MCAC Championships and two ACCA National Championships. During his time there, he was recognized as 2nd team All-Conference two times, as well as an academic All-American. He played professional 3x3 Basketball in 2014, qualifying for the FIBA 3x3 World Tour twice. Additionally, he played professionally in Japan for one season. He is a member of Canada's Deaf National Basketball Team. He's played in the USADB National Tournament, where he was named MVP, and his team won the Division 2 National Championship. Most recently, he participated in the Deaf Pan American Basketball Championships in Argentina. He is the current head coach and teaches at Richer School in South East Manitoba, a position he's held for 14 years. He was the head coach of the Providence College women's program, assisted with the men's program, and was a regular instructor at their summer camps. Additionally, he's coached for one year with the Manitoba Provincial Team program. Most people know him from his dominance in Sr Men's, winning many championships over the years. She graduated from Glenlawn Collegiate in Winnipeg, where she won a provincial title and was ranked as the number 1 player in the province. She's played for the Manitoba Provincial Team for three years. She then went on to play at the University of Utah, where she graduated from the program as the first player in school history to record more than 1500 points, 1000 rebounds and 200 blocks in their career. Additionally, She was ranked in the Top-5 in PAC-12 history in shots blocked and top-15 in total rebounds. She was named to the PAC-12 All-Conference team in her Sophomore, Junior and Senior seasons. The league was founded in 2001 with just seven teams and now features more than 114 teams with 14 divisions from youth to senior. He was elected Commissioner of the Filipino Basketball Association of North America from 2014-18. Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Randy Kusano. Randy has been coaching for over 45 years and is considered one of the most successful high school coaches in Manitoba. Randy is a graduate of Glenlawn Collegiate, where he went on to play at the University of Manitoba. He was part of the 1976 University of Manitoba men's basketball team that won the Canadian National Championship. After graduating, he went on to coach at Oak Park High School for 34 years, where his teams made 15 final fours, won 3 Provincial Championships, and amassed over 800 wins. He was an assistant coach with the men's program and an assistant and co-coach with the women's programs at the University of Manitoba. He's coached the boys and girls Manitoba Provincial teams, winning two bronze medals at the Canada games and Canada Basketball Nationals. After retiring from Oak Park, he joined the Basketball Manitoba staff as a high-performance coach and development coach, a role he currently holds. He is a winner of the Basketball Manitoba Mike Spack Lifetime Achievement Award. He's been Manitoba High School Athletic Association coach of the year. A legend in the Basketball Manitoba Community, Bill started his basketball journey at St. John's High School as a player and then went on to play at the University of Manitoba. After graduating, he became the head coach of the St. John's High School varsity boys program from 1968 to 1984, where his teams won the Provincial AAAA Championship in 1978. He went on to coach for 16 years at the University of Winnipeg and spent nine years as the Athletic Director. After retiring from the University of Winnipeg, he went on to be the Executive Director of the Manitoba College's Athletic Conference, a position he held for 12 years. He was an assistant coach with the Canadian Men's National team for one year with legendary coach Jack Donohue. He was named the CIS Men's National Coach of the Year, was the President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches of Canada and was the co-founder of the Winnipeg Invitational Basketball Tournament. He was also an author, writing three books on basketball coaching and was a broadcaster, providing colour commentary on CJOB radio and Global TV and hosting his own basketball show on Shaw TV. Chad is a professional basketball player who is a graduate of River East Collegiate, where he was recognized as an All-Manitoban and as one of the top five high school players in Canada. He represented the Manitoba Provincial Team 3 times. After high school, he was recruited to play at the University of British Columbia. He then transferred to Howard Community College (Columbia, Maryland), and finally to Morehead State in Kentucky. There he was 4th in the NCAA in rebounds and was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Third Team. He started his professional career in the NBA summer league with the Chicago Bulls. Since then, he has played in Japan, Argentina, China, the United States in the G-League, and Canada in both the NBL and the CEBL. Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast we have Keylyn Filewich. She is currently playing her first year as a professional basketball player in Germany for the Astroladies Basketball Club. She graduated from Vincent Massey Collegiate in Winnipeg, won a provincial AAAA Championship, was a 2-time all Manitoban and was recognized as MHSAA Athlete of the Year. She played on the Manitoba provincial team for five years, winning a Gold medal in 2014. After high school, she was recruited to play at the University of British Columbia, where she was named to the Canada West All-Rookie team, Canada West First Team All-Star 2 times, Canada West Player of the Year, USPORT 1st Team All-Star and was named the UBC Female Athlete of the Year. She transferred back to her hometown for her last year, suiting up for the Winnipeg Wesmen, where they went all the way to the national final in 2022. Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast we have Daniel Sackey. He is currently a Senior at the University of New Orleans, which competes in the NCAA Division 1 Southland Conference. He attended Kelvin High School and transferred from Thornlea Secondary School (Markham, Ontario), where he was a First-Team All-Star in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA). He was ranked No. 16 in his class by North Pole Hoops and was selected for the 2018 BioSteel All-Canadian Game, where he won the slam dunk contest. He went on to play at Valparaiso University (Missouri Valley Conference) for 3 years, where he appeared in 92 games, 65 as a starter. He then transferred to the University of New Orleans, where last year he Averaged 6.6 points per game and 2.8 assists per game in 27.6 minutes played per game. Today on the Basketball Manitoba podcast, we have Amarjit (AJ) Basi. He is a professional basketball player who recently played professional basketball in the British Basketball League. He graduated from Sturgeon Heights Colligate in Winnipeg, where he was ranked 3rd in the province and was selected to the All-Manitoba team. After high school, he played for the University of Manitoba, where he helped the program reach the Nation Championship Tournament in 2017, the first appearance for the program in 32 years. He ended his career with the Bisons 4th all-time in scoring, 3rd in field goals made, 1st in 3-point field goals, 6th in steals, 6th in games played, and 2nd in free throw percentage and was the captain of the team in his last two years. After college, he played in England, suiting up for New Castle Eagles of the British Basketball League. He also played in Italy and Germany. He is currently recovering from Achilles surgery and looking forward to returning to playing when he's healthy. Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast we have Mike Ruta. He is considered the “Father of the WMBA,” as he led the formation of the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association in 1997 and became the league's first President. His vision was to provide a structured basketball league for Winnipeg area youth outside the school system and open for all to participate. The league kicked off its first season in 1997 with 40 teams out of 12 community centers. The Spring League of 2008 saw a record high of 310 teams. Adding to this legacy, the WMBA Foundation has built six outdoor basketball courts, awarded scholarships to graduating players yearly, and provided subsidies for players and community clubs in need. Mike was named the Sport Manitoba Volunteer of the Year in 1997 and inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in the Builder category in 2011. Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Emmanuel Akot. Emmanuel first attended Valley Gardens Middle School, then Kildonan East Collegiate up until the 10th grade. He played with both the Winnipeg Mayhem and Winnipeg Wolves Basketball Clubs, then received an offer to attend Wasatch Academy Prep Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah. As a senior at Wasatch Academy, he averaged 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists per game. He was a member of the Canadian National Team program in the summer of 2016, representing the country at the U17 FIBA World Championships in Spain. He was selected to the Bio-Steel All-Canadian Game and the NBA All-Star Game's Basketball Without Borders Camp in 2017. He was a Four-Star recruit by ESPN and was recruited to play at the University of Arizona, where he played for two seasons. He then transferred to Boise State, where he helped lead the Broncos to the school's first-ever Mountain West Conference title, earning a berth into the NCAA March Madness tournament. This fall, he will be suiting up for coach Penny Hardaway with the Memphis Tigers in the AAC. Jarred graduated from Garden City Collegiate, where he led the team to back-to-back AAAA Manitoba Provincial Championship titles. He was voted the number one player in the province in grades 11 and 12. He is a former Basketball Manitoba Provincial Team member playing for four summers with the program. He went on to play at the University of Calgary, where he played for the Dinos for five years. He was a Second-Team All-Canadian, and a Canada West All-Star two times. He finished his career top 10 in Calgary Dino's history in rebounds, field goals, free throws made, three-pointers made, assists, games played, games started, minutes played, free throw percentage, and assist to turnover ratio, and is 3rd in all-time in points and 1st in steals. After college, he went to play pro, has played in Denmark, Finland, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands, and is currently playing in France. He has been recognized as Guard of the Year in Portugal and Guard of the Year, and Import Player of the Year in the Netherlands. He played professionally in Canada with the Winnipeg Thunder, in Germany, and in Japan. He played for the five years with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, where he was named a Great Plains (GPAC) First Team All-Star two times and an All-Canadian Honorable mention. As a coach in Japan, he coached Middle School and High School basketball for seven years, winning four league championships. As a professional coach, He's won a B-League 2nd Division Championship and been to the 1st Division finals three times. He has had 11 players play on the Japanese National Team, 4 of which won the Silver medal at the 2020 Olympics. One of his players has moved on to the WMBA (Washington Mystics).
