Chicago, Illinois artist Mr. Cam Collins is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest earning him a trip to Hollywood for a week-long master-class workshop, an awards event and his winning art will be published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 41. Cam Collins was born in 1999 in the city of Chicago, being raised by his parents whose first actions of fostering his creativity were by having a chalkboard wall in his room. The creative pursuits continued, and Collins knew early on that he'd want to draw for the rest of his life. He was one of the first few members to be selected for the College Arts Access Program (CAAP) of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago through high school, and went on to study Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design. He gained a love for creating books, and realized a key ingredient to bring his illustrations further was to start writing stories in tandem with his illustrations. Collins continues to do commissions for a variety of clients, and has brought his art and storytelling into his own world called "Way of the Canvas". He will be working on this world for as long as he can draw, and has created comics, videos, and even games devoted to it. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book). The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (The Oppenheimer Alternative), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), Hugh Howey (Wool), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. Following the 1982 release of his internationally acclaimed bestselling science fiction novel, Battlefield Earth, written in celebration of 50 years as a professional writer, L. Ron Hubbard created the Writers of the Future (writersofthefuture.com) in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers of speculative fiction to get that much-needed break. Due to the success of the Writers of the Future Contest, the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest was inaugurated five years later. The Writers of the Future Award is the genre's most prestigious award of its kind and has now become the largest, most successful, and demonstrably most influential vehicle for budding creative talent in the world of speculative fiction. Since its inception, the Writers and Illustrators of the Future contests have produced 39 anthology volumes (with this event) and awarded upwards of $1 million in cash prizes and royalties. T.R. Naus emerged from a love of exploration. He grew up traveling across Europe, Asia, and the United States as a military brat and a soldier in the US Army, developing a passion for wandering, adventures, and intriguing stories. His journey led him to experience fascinating cultures and subcultures, where he learned from inspiring people, but with each new encounter, he wondered how evolving technology impacts how we see ourselves and the communities around us. He eventually settled in Virginia with his wife and two daughters and turned to speculative fiction to express those anxieties-and hopes-about our future. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (The Oppenheimer Alternative), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), Hugh Howey

Agency Nation Radio - Insurance Marketing, Sales and Technology
On this episode of Agency nation Radio, Sarah Cooke, director of personal lines at WalkerHughes Insurance in Indianapolis, Indiana, shares how the agency took technology into their own hands to overcome challenges in the hard market. Named as the Outstanding Large Agency in the 2023 Liberty Mutual and Safeco Agent for the Future Awards, WalkerHughes began developing “Violet,” a proprietary software that acts as the agency's personal lines management system, in 2016. “We have so many pressures now, especially with the kind of market that we're in, and we want our employees to be able to function efficiently on a daily basis,” Cooke says. “By building what others won't from a technology perspective, we feel uniquely positioned to best support our growing team in the future.” Agency Nation Radio is where insurance professionals turn on the mic and share unscripted stories about leadership, technology, marketing, success, and failure—stories that helped make them the professionals they are today. From Main Street USA to the pages of Independent Agent magazine—we've got the stories you want to hear. For more, catch Agency Nation Radio on your favorite streaming platform or visit iamagazine.com/podcasts. This episode is sponsored by the Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association (WSIA). Some decisions are too precarious to take on alone. Sometimes you need a partner who can help you create the right solution for your client's risk, while minimizing yours. In fact, it's so cost-effective that a recent analysis by Conning, Inc. concludes that wholesale distribution does not increase the cost to the insured. That's a good decision. Manage risk. AMHERST AUTHOR WINS INTERNATIONAL WRITERS CONTEST Featured in New Release Amherst, Massachusetts author Marianne Xenos is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest and was honored, via remote video, along with eleven other winning writers and twelve winning artists at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 28th. Her story, "Moonlight and Funk," is illustrated by April Solomon of Laguna Beach, California who is herself a winner of the Illustrators of the Future Contest. The story and illustration along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art are published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39 which was officially released on May 16th. Marianne Xenos is a writer and visual artist living in western Massachusetts. She works with mixed-media, photography, and fiction. She's a member of an artist-run gallery and creates artwork with a strong sense of fantasy and narrative. Although she's been writing since she first learned to read, Marianne only began sending out her stories for publication in the past year and a half. Marianne grew up in a blue-collar family outside of Boston. Her childhood was full of immigrants, builders, and working-class heroes-people who inspire the characters in her stories. Her father was a heavy-equipment operator who moved to Key West to look for gold, with only moderate success. He introduced her to treasure hunters, conchs, and deep-sea fishing. Marianne's mother, who never left New England if she could help it, taught her to dance as soon as she could walk--everything from Greek line dances to the cha-cha. In 2021, Marianne published her first short story, and was a finalist for Writers of the Future. The current winning submission which will be published in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39 is her first professional sale and the title and story are not revealed at this point in time since they are in contention for the grand prize, the Golden Pen Award and a $5,000 cash prize. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 40th year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (Quantum Night), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), David Farland (Runelords), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Following the 1982 release of his internationally acclaimed bestselling science fiction novel, Battlefield Earth, written in celebration of 50 years as a professional writer, L. In the 39 years of the Writers of the Future Contest, there have been 547 winners and published finalists. The past winners of the Writing Contest have published 2,000 novels and nearly 6,300 short stories. They have produced 36 New York Times bestsellers, and their works have sold over 60 million copies. In the 34 years of the Illustrators of the Future Contest, there have been 394 winners. The past winners of the Illustrating Contest have produced over 6,800 illustrations, 390 comic books, graced 700 books and albums with their art, and visually contributed to 68 television shows and 40 major movies. Join Rahul and Ben for their discussion with Las Vegas trial lawyer, Ben Cloward (https://www.thefiercefirm.com/). Attorney Cloward shares how his Mormon faith and commitment to service created the foundation for his career as a plaintiff trial lawyer. Ben describes in detail how he used aggressive discovery and big data to develop and try a negligent security case on behalf of the family of a man murdered at a local housing development. Ben talks about how he was able to identify the most compelling facts, come up with the ideal sequencing of the evidence, and rebut factual and legal defense to achieve this extraordinary result. About Ben ClowardIn 2016, at the age of 37, Benjamin P. Cloward became the youngest lawyer in the history of the State of Nevada to be awarded the prestigious “Trial Lawyer of the Year” by the Nevada Justice Association. That same year, he became the youngest member of the Nevada, Las Vegas Chapter of ABOTA (American Board of Trial Advocates), and at the time was also the youngest person in the State of Nevada to be Board Certified as a Personal Injury Specialist. He has received many additional recognitions, including being AV-Rated by Martindale-Hubbell and receiving a perfect 10.0 by Avvo.com. He has been featured in several magazines in Nevada for his accomplishments and hard work. Just recently, in February 2020, Ben obtained a $38 million jury verdict, which is believed to be the largest ever negligent security for wrongful death in the State of Nevada. Other verdicts Ben has obtained include a $15 million jury verdict in 2016 on behalf of a family whose disabled son, Harvey, was allowed to choke to death on a paratransit bus. That verdict was upheld in a unanimous decision after four years of contentious appellate litigation with the final judgment ballooning to over $20.5 million dollars. The defense in that case never formally offered a single penny. After obtaining the verdict, Ben continued working on the safety issue that led to Harvey's death, and with the help of many other people, got “Harvey's Law” passed in Nevada in 2017, which required certain training for all paratransit bus drivers to ensure others were protected. In 2016, Ben also obtained a $12.9 million jury verdict for a family whose life had been altered by a drunk driver who injured the mother and killed the daughter. He also obtained a $10 million settlement for a client who was significantly injured from a fall which resulted in a moderate brain injury. Ben has obtained multiple soft-tissue, low visible property damage jury verdicts including a $2.98 million jury verdict in 2018, a $1,075,000 verdict in 2014, and several 6 figure verdicts. In addition to obtaining significant jury verdicts, Ben has also been involved in settling over thirty cases for values ranging from $1 million to $10 million as noted above. Ben successfully argued the Khoury v. Seastrand, 133 Nev. Adv. Op. 52 (July 28, 2016) case which was a huge victory for all injured Nevadans because it rejected the Howell doctrine, which allows negligent people who caused harm to get a discount when they hit responsible citizens who carried personal health insurance. Ben is a graduate of the famed Gerry Spence Trial Lawyer's College and believes as does Gerry that “It all begins with you . . .” Ben served on the board for a nonprofit company called the Loa Fund, which focuses on providing financial assistance to those who struggle with addiction to receive help through wilderness therapy and other addiction recovery programs. Ben believes that you can never truly understand another human until you have walked a mile in their shoes and that everyone should be given the benefit of the doubt and a chance to prove themselves. Ben was raised in Salem, Utah. As a young boy, Ben earned his Eagle Scout Award and after graduation from high school, he served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Louisiana. Ben attended the University of Utah and graduated in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in finance. He began law school at the University of Tulsa, College of Law. After his first year, Ben transferred to the University of Utah, S.J. Quinney College of Law, where he graduated in 2008. While in law school, Ben received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Teaching Law in the High School, the CALI Excellence for the Future Award for Property, and was on the Dean's List. He also served as the President of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society and as a Judicial Intern for the then-State Court Presiding Judge, Gregory K. Frizzell, who is now a Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma. He also participated as a Note and Comment Editor for the Journal of Land, Resources, and Environment Law, where his Comment, Why has State v. Hutchinson Been Ignored? An Analysis of Why Utah Cities Lack Authority to Exact Water, 28 J. LAND RESOURCES & ENVTL. L. 433, was selected for publication. Ben's interests outside of work include spending time with his wife and two beautiful daughters. He also enjoys mule deer archery hunting, bass-fishing, camping, and watching the Boston Red Sox. He is active in his church and currently serves as a Stake High Councilor. He believes our highest calling in life is to help others come unto Christ.
