In this episode, Heather sits down with Karly, a pet and equine photographer who is in the early but powerful stages of building a profitable photography business. Karly shares what it looks like to invest deeply in your growth before the income catches up, how surrounding yourself with the right people can completely change what you believe is possible, and why visibility—especially when it feels uncomfortable—can be the very thing that accelerates momentum. This conversation is an honest look at belief, confidence, and the internal shifts that happen long before external success shows up. 3 Key Takeaways 1. Growth Often Comes Before the Money Karly shares what it looks like to invest in your growth—education, retreats, and support—before the income shows up. Even though she's still in the red, she has complete belief that the results will come, and that belief is what keeps her moving forward instead of quitting. 2. Proximity Expands Belief and Possibility Being in rooms with successful, supportive photographers changed Karly's vision of what was possible for her business. Seeing others at different stages helped her move from "maybe someday" to "I can do this too." 3. Visibility Is the Catalyst for Momentum As a self-described "world-class hider," Karly joined Elevate because visibility felt uncomfortable—and therefore necessary. She realized that taking action, showing up, and allowing herself to be seen was the missing piece between learning and actually building momentum. Chris Holman welcomes Karley Abramson, Research Associate-Health Policy, Citizens Research Council of Michigan, Livonia, MI, but working out of Lansing. Welcome Karley, remind us about the Citizens Research Council of Michigan and your role at the CRC? Your new report connects social determinants of health directly to Michigan's economic performance. What should business leaders understand about how poor population health affects workforce productivity and long-term competitiveness? Michigan's health outcomes are lagging behind neighboring states and even international peers. From a business perspective, what are the cost implications—such as absenteeism, healthcare spending, and labor force participation—of failing to address these root causes? The research shows a strong link between financial resources and health outcomes. How might Michigan employers play a role in improving these conditions through wages, benefits, or community investment strategies? As the report highlights the interconnectedness of social determinants of health, what partnerships between the private sector and policymakers could most effectively improve health and economic prosperity statewide? If Michigan wants to reverse deteriorating trends, what business-aligned policy changes or corporate practices does your research suggest could move the needle the fastest? » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/ Lack of Financial Resources Central to Michiganders Lagging Health Outcomes New Research: Social Determinants of Health: Pathways to a Healthier Michigan Livonia, MI, Nov. 18, 2025 – Citizens Research Council of Michigan today released exhaustive research that drills down to root causes of why Michiganders suffer from worse health outcomes than our fellow citizens in comparable, neighboring states, across the U.S., and among our international peers. The report, Social Determinants of Health: Pathways to a Healthier Michigan, outlines what Social Determinants of Health are and how they directly affect individual residents, Michigan's economy, and the state's future. Financial Resources as Pathways to Health Outcomes Policies in Michigan, like many other states, focus on the health care industry or individual health issues, but to impact health outcomes, policymakers need to consider a wider range of solutions, which is where Social Determinants of Health come in. The all-encompassing nature of Social Determinants of Health can make it difficult for policymakers to translate them into tangible actions. This report unpacks Social Determinants of Health by focusing on the evidence-based fundamental resources that are necessary for individual health: Financial Resources; Health Care; Food and Nutrition; Safety; and Social Support. “Each of these categories covers a vast number of overlapping issues and their interconnectedness is central to any discussion about health policy,” said Eric Lupher, Citizens Research Council president. “The centrality of financial resources – education, employment, and income – is the story of Michigan's lagging health outcomes.” ### Founded in 1916, the Citizens Research Council of Michigan works to improve government in Michigan. The organization provides factual, unbiased, independent information concerning significant issues of state and local government organization, policy, and finance. By delivery of this information to policymakers and citizens, the Research Council aims to ensure sound and rational public policy formation in Michigan. For more information, visit www.crcmich.org.
Major health organizations, including the CDC and ACOG, recommend universal Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) screening for all pregnant women during each pregnancy and at time of delivery. Ideally, pregnant women should be screened for hepatitis C virus infection at the first prenatal visit of each pregnancy. If the antibody screen result is positive, hepatitis C virus RNA polymerase chain reaction testing is done to confirm the diagnosis. The risk of perinatal transmission of HCV is up to 9%, with at least one-third of transmissions occurring antenatally. While antiviral therapy is recommended for Hepatitis B in pregnancy with a viral load greater than 200,000 international units/mL to decrease the risk of vertical transmission, the same is not the case for Hep C. According to the ACOG CPG #6 from September 2023, there are no standard treatment protocols for Hep C in pregnancy but a new publication from the PINK journal (7 Dec 2025) is calling for a change. That new publication is, “Hepatitis C Treatment During Pregnancy: Time for a Practice Change”. Listen in for details. 1. ACOG CPG #6; Sept 20262. Bhattacharya D, Aronsohn A, Price J, Lo Re V. Karley Cunningham has a diverse background and a unique perspective on the world. At 8, she was being groomed to be one of the top pairs figure skaters in Canada (and the world). After quitting, she went on to compete in equestrian, cross country and golf (all at a high level) before discovering mountain biking. She became an elite mountain biker and raced for many years and now she's come over to the dark side and discovered trail running.Karley grew up in what she describes as a gender-neutral household, playing a lot of sport with boys, and it's given her a unique perspective on the female brain, what she calls “female hesitation” and the way gender (and specifically our conditioning) affects our mindset and our success. We discuss perfectionism, crashing, the worst mistake ever, the importance of keeping your focus on what's right in front of you, why she says she's hardly ever failed and, of course, the Imposter Complex.

Title: The Power of Reinvention: From Laid Off to Lit Up with Karley StewartThis week on The Goode Guide, we're getting real about career curveballs, identity shifts, and what it means to reinvent yourself—not just professionally, but personally.I'm joined by the incredibly insightful and resilient Karley Stewart, a powerhouse leader whose career spans Nordstrom, Louis Vuitton, and Amazon. Carly and I first bonded over our shared corporate roots—rare in LA's sea of creatives—and today's conversation feels like chatting with a future version of myself. We cover it all: layoffs, leadership, letting go of old plans, and learning to love the pivots.Carly opens up about her unexpected layoff just two weeks after relocating to New York, the emotional unraveling that followed, and the clarity she gained from hitting pause and leaning into self-discovery. Her story is an empowering reminder that your job may be what you do, but it's not who you are—and that some of our biggest breakthroughs come wrapped in what first looks like breakdown. From LA to the Corporate Grind [2:24] Shanarra shares what it was like moving to LA and not finding many peers in traditional 9–5 roles—until she met Karley, who mirrored her own corporate path and ambition.Carly's Early Career + Dream of Shoe Entrepreneurship [6:03] Karley reflects on her early days in retail, her original dream of opening a shoe store, and how Nordstrom fast-tracked her leadership journey. The Three P's That Shaped Her Leadership Style [10:35]Karley introduces her “Three P's”—People, Passion, Product—and how they became the north star for her leadership philosophy. From Luxury to Tech: Transitioning to Amazon [15:12] We talk about the culture shock of moving from Louis Vuitton to Amazon and why her first role at Amazon didn't quite fit—but still taught her invaluable lessons.Boomerang Back: Why She Returned to Amazon [20:45] Karley shares what brought her back to Amazon and how working under two powerful women reignited her leadership confidence.Layoff in a New City: When the Plan Falls Apart [27:19] Just weeks after moving to NYC, Karley was laid off. She opens up about the emotional fallout, identity loss, and what it taught her about self-worth beyond titles.Rebuilding Through Reflection [33:31] From journaling to soul-searching, Karley walks us through the internal work she's done to reconnect with what she truly wants.Confidence and Curiosity: What She Wishes She Knew at 25 [39:12] Karley reflects on the advice she'd give her younger self—and why confidence and curiosity are the keys to long-term growth. The Power of Your Network [44:00] We talk about the importance of building strong relationships, especially when you're in transition—and why your network can often open more doors than your résumé.
In this conversation, Nina and Karley explore the complexities of gender roles, ambition, and the unique shame that women often experience. They discuss how societal expectations shape women's self-perception and the pressure they feel from both themselves and other women. The conversation also highlights the importance of supportive relationships and the empowerment that comes from vulnerability and acceptance of needing help. 03:06 The Impact of Shame on Women 06:01 Societal Expectations and Self-Perception 11:51 Empowerment Through Vulnerability 20:48 Stereotypes and Shame Among Women 23:35 Navigating Shame and Self-Perception 27:35 Social Media's Influence on Self-Comparison 29:43 Coping Mechanisms and Acceptance Karley Weinberg is a working mom of two, stepmom of one, and content creator with a background in Sociology, Public Health, and Law. This week, I sit down with Eoin McGrath, an online coach, a recovering addict, and one of the most open and inspiring guests I’ve had on the podcast. Eoin shares his journey through addiction, from being a young boy struggling in school to becoming the class clown to fit in, turning to alcohol for confidence, and eventually spiralling into cocaine use. He speaks so honestly about the realities of addiction, his time in rehab, and the beautiful love story that unfolded there with Karley and the devastating loss he faced when she passed away before they could build a life together. This is a powerful, emotional, and deeply important conversation, one that I believe will help so many people, and one that every family should hear. From legal insights to leadership philosophy, this episode explores what it takes to break into—and rise within—one of the most competitive industries, all while staying rooted in purpose, integrity, and faith.
On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Karley Cunningham, founder of Big Bold Brand and the Surefire Method, about how branding can help a destination, attraction, or business in the tourism industry stand out from the crowd. Karley breaks it down into three key themes: understanding our fundamental beliefs, knowing the markets we serve, and positioning ourselves around benefits and differentiators. Karley clears up all the noise around branding and marketing and shares actionable steps to help you evolve your brand. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How understanding fundamental beliefs and truths strengthens a brand's identity Why you need to distinguish branding from marketing and how this distinction leads to more effective marketing strategies Actionable steps for creating a strong brand promise and how it can impact employee recruitment and retention How the concept of tightening the creative box leads to more innovative solutions and helps a brand differentiate itself in a competitive market Why aligning a brand's internal culture with its external promises impacts a company's overall reputation and employee satisfaction What role target audience understanding plays in brand differentiation Differentiating Branding from Marketing Branding and marketing play distinctly different roles in business success, and Karley shares her philosophy that branding is the backbone that informs and enhances marketing strategies. While marketing focuses on promoting products and services to specific audiences, branding is about creating a compelling narrative that defines what your destination or business stands for. As Karley puts it, “Brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room.” It's about building a reputation through consistent, authentic interactions at every customer touchpoint. Building a strong brand is about taking a good look at who you are as an organization. Start with an inside-out approach—look at your fundamental beliefs and truths. As a destination, you really need to dig into your core purpose, guiding principles, character, and vision. These elements form the DNA of the brand and serve as a blueprint for how a company operates both internally and externally. Understand Your Audience After establishing a strong internal identity, your next step should be taking the time to understand the external market. Travel and tourism businesses must identify their target audiences by exploring what problems they solve for these groups. Knowing what draws visitors to your destination is key, whether it's providing adventure, culinary experiences, or relaxation. Karley uses the example of aligning the customer experience with expectations: “Are people going to come away from our region raving about what we do because we've set them up for success?” Understanding audience expectations allows companies to craft specific value propositions, ensuring that every touchpoint is meaningful and engaging. Positioning, Messaging, and Telling Your Story Effective branding requires clear positioning and messaging strategies. This involves identifying the benefits and differentiators your business offers compared to competitors. What makes you unique and why travelers should choose you over others? Storytelling is a powerful tool because sharing narratives about local culture, history, or the people that make your destination unique can resonate deeply with potential visitors and create a relatable brand image. Integrating the Brand Promise The brand promise needs to include employees as well as customers, and as Karley points out, the internal experience has to mirror the external promise. Ensuring employees feel valued and integral to delivering on your destination's promise boosts morale and improves service quality, which in turn elevates your visitors' experience. By integrating the brand promise throughout the organization, businesses improve customer experience and enhance employee recruitment and retention, which is an essential consideration in the tourism industry right now. Is the fear of failure the driving force that keeps you striving towards your goals? For too many agency owners, the relentless stress of this life corrodes their drive, fueling an unhealthy obsession with avoiding defeat at all costs. Prevent Burnout with a Purposeful Plan: Taking a Sports Approach to Agency Growth Karley, a former pro-level mountain biker and passionate sports enthusiast, attributes the most significant impact of sports in her life to the structure it provides. As a creative thinker prone to distraction, she values the discipline and routine that sports have instilled in her, enabling her to focus and succeed. For her, it's been easier to absorb business lessons by drawing parallels between sports and business, which is how she's gotten to important shifts like taking a rest week every six to seven weeks of the year to catch up, think about the agency's vision, and breathe. Like navigating a challenging trail in the mountains, running an agency requires determination, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose. However, the most important thing you can do to prevent burnout is to have a plan. Many agency owners let the day-to-day consume them until they feel the only way out of the constant stress is to get out of the business altogether and sell the agency. At this point, they need a clear plan detailing the short-term and long-term goals they're aiming for that will provide a direction and strategy. Additionally, Karley's advice to agency owners is to ensure the journey is as fulfilling as the destination. Just like in outdoor adventures where the climb must be worth the descent, agency owners should find joy and fulfillment in the process of growing their business. By integrating elements that excite and motivate them into their plans, agency owners can maintain their passion and drive toward success. In this sense, she recommends agency owners to "plan to thrive, not survive" as a key mindset to adopt in order to achieve success and growth in their businesses. Plan to Thrive: Teamwork and Collaboration for Agency Success Just like preparing for a challenging adventure like hiking the Grand Canyon takes planning ahead and anticipating challenges in order to thrive in the face of adversity. Agency owners should remember that, just like hiking a mountain, doing it all by yourself can prove to be very difficult and even boring. Having a strong team and a supportive network can make all the difference in your journey. By surrounding yourself with a team of smart and capable individuals, you can leverage their strengths, make better decisions, and achieve greater success as a collective unit. For Karley, watching her team thrive is very rewarding and something you can only get through collaboration, teamwork, and shared decision-making in overcoming challenges and celebrating victories together. Ditching the Fear Mindset Operating from a Place of Passion Right now, the next stage for Karley is to prepare to sell her core methodology, which she was able to develop and systemize during the pandemic. As she prepares to turn it into a licensable system, she is admittedly stepping into a scary part of the process, a prospect that both excites and scares her. Despite her apprehension, she is determined not to let fear be the driving force behind her efforts. Due to the many stresses of agency life, owners can end up fueled by the fear of failure, which is a horrible way to live. Karley encourages agency owners to be aware of what the dangers are but avoid running from a place of fear and instead try to hold on to the enjoyment of the process. To get to this place, think about surrounding yourself with people who know how to navigate those dangers and build a team with the skills to get you out of any situation. By doing so, you can operate from a place of passion and trust in their abilities to succeed. And if you do ultimately fail, then it can serve as experience for the next adventure. In the end, there are no lives at stake. The agency may die but you're still here to keep going. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset?
