Send us a textReligious mystics Margery of Kempe and Julian of Norwich lived in close proximity to one another in time and place, yet the lives of these two medieval women couldn't have been more different. One traveled the world in relentless pursuit of spiritual validation, while the other withdrew into a walled cell. One boldly proclaimed her visions of Christ while the other recorded quiet revelations. One authored the first autobiography in English while the other penned the first known book in English by a woman. But here's where it gets truly fascinating: these two women actually met—a fateful encounter depicted in guest Victoria MacKenzie's award-winning debut novel, For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy on My Little Pain. Join us as we discuss these two incredible women whose accounts of divine encounters were destined for rediscovery centuries after being lost to time.Mentioned in this episodeThe British Library's exhibit: Medieval Women: In Their Own WordsHighgate CemeteryFor Thy Great Pain Have Mercy on My Little Pain by Victoria MacKenzieThe Book of Margery KempeRevelations of Divine Love by Julian of NorwichBridget of SwedenLost Ladies of Lit podcast Episode No. 164 on Christine de PizanLost Ladies of Lit podcast Episode No. 34 on Anna KomneneLost Ladies of Lit podcast Episode No. 70 on Julian BernersSupport the showFor episodes and show notes, visit: LostLadiesofLit.comDiscuss episodes on our Facebook Forum. All journeys must pause before they continue. In this season finale Ramjee Chandran brings together the threads of history that led to the founding of Bengaluru. We step into the grandeur of Krishna Deva Raya's court, witness the empire's twilight as the Deccan Sultanates close in, and watch as vassals like the Wadiyars and Kempe Gowda rise to stake their claims in history. Bangalore's story is one of ambition, power, and reinvention—and as we close this chapter, we leave you with the echoes of history, a city waiting to be built, and the promise that there's more to come. SUMMARYFrom medieval itineraries to modern livestreams, Christian pilgrimage is often, if not always experienced through an imaginative transposal from a physical reality to a spiritual truth. In this episode, hosts Lindsay Pereira and Ella Jando-Saul explore the concept of virtual pilgrimage through conversations with two guests: Michael Van Dussen, a professor in the Department of English at McGill University in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal, teaches us about the medieval experience of pilgrimage in the British Isles while Simon Coleman, a professor in the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto teaches us about the modern reconstruction of pilgrimage to Walsingham in Norfolk, England.Simon Coleman's latest book, Powers of Pilgrimage: Religion in a World of Movement, can be found here.*VOICE AND SOUND CREDITSInterviewees:Dr. Michael Van Dussen, Professor of English Literature, McGill University.Dr. Simon Coleman, Professor of Anthropology and Religion, University of Toronto.Theme music:“Ai Tal Domna”: composed by Berenguier de Palou, recorded by Zep Hurme ©2014. Things Discussed: Dusty May's recruiting: A+. Grady should be Wisconsin-level hateable. Oscar Goodman has the most beautiful line in a shooter's scouting report: good not great athlete. These guys will be around 3-4 years Craig: Grady has some Roddy Gayle, can shoot a midrange. Have pole position in the recruitment of impact Trey McKenney, fighting UNLV and BYU for a center who does everything they want. Oakland Exhibition takes: The ball does not stick on this team. Three guys are point guards, and then Danny Wolf also sees the court. It got a little sloppy as they got to know each other. Roddy Gayle's defense stood out. Sam Walters stood out, role this year is going to be a JAS. Question: do they wear out their centers? If you want to play fast you're going to wear out your bigs, which is fine if you're going to play Wolf at the five for 15 minutes, but now you need a four. Think that will be matchup-based whether they roll with Walters or Tschetter or Jones in those situations. If someone gets in foul trouble they can weather it. Weird to see a guard foul out (Cason) and not be worried. Means they can play more aggressively. Defense was impressive. They did play drop, but being able to flat hedge is important, and having huge guards is going to feel very different. So many arms! Another takeaway: Wolf's rebounding is very underrated. Toledo preview: they're a five-out team with a 6-7 center so we'll get to see a different configuration against a different challenge than Kempe's big guards. Babalola: Good to see Sherrone Moore's recruiting is what we hoped it would be. Way more athletic than most guys we've had, reminds me of when the early internet sent around a video clip of Jake Long dunking. Illinois review: Offensive line was better, Gentry had a couple of pressures given up (PFF missed one) but he moved people and it's hard to understand why he wasn't playing over Link. Crippen it's more clear why they were trying Giudice because Crip tends to get bulled back. Wasn't terrible. Tuttle was—some of his mistakes weren't on him but he fumbled, had two HORRIBLE interceptions, can tell he hasn't practiced much this year. They found a major: split zone. Then they went away from it. When they play-action they get the reaction they want, but can't complete the pass. Game over. Who's QB: doesn't matter. Illinois had a good gameplan, but defense was good. Game was lost on offense, which is 94% the quarterback, so it's hard for us to break this down. Everybody can see this. Special teams is the other issue: Doman's punts are giving up 30 yards on the exchange. Everybody knew Illinois was going to fake near the 50 except this team. Defense: Got a better Wink. Starting to build blitzes around his players, and they're more effective. Michigan State: Michigan has better players, MSU has better coaching. They got Chiles to not turn the ball over against Iowa and suddenly they look good. Fancystat numbers are based on horrible interceptions; down to down they're a decent offense. Marsh is a dangerous WR, wish we had a healthy Will Johnson. MSU's OL is not good, especially on the right side.

Episode 138:Over the course of speaking about English Renaissance Plays and Shakespeare I have had cause to mention the play ‘A Knack to Know a Knave' several times. Most latterly because it is thought to include references to ‘The Taming of the Shrew' and ‘Titus Andronicus' and prior to that, in the season on the Early Renaissance Theatre it had a mention as one of the plays performed at the Rose Playhouse as recorded in Henslowe's Diary. Having been reminded of it while writing about the early Shakespeare plays I thought that it deserved a little time in the spotlight on it's own as it gives us a little snapshot of the plays, and particularly comedies other than Shakespeare and Jonson, that was circulating at the time of the earliest of Shakespeare's plays. So, here is a little interlude of an episode all about ‘A Knack to Know a Knave'.A quick word on ‘Shakespeare's Borrowed Feathers' by Darren Feebury-Jones, which is published in October 2024 and on Henry Porter and his possible involvement with ‘Dr Faustus'.The performances of ‘A Knack to Know a Knave' as reported in Henslowe's DiaryThe mystery of the low takings for repeated performances in a second run of the playThe printed quarto edition of the playA summary of the plotThe (possibly) missing parts of the play, including Kempe's extemporisingHow the fools of Gotham folk tale is worked into the playThe allusions to other plays in the textThe final lines of the playIf you would like to read the text of A Knack to Know a Knave, you can find it on google books here Support the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp Hosted on Acast.
