Ana Maria Archila is a longtime immigrant rights leader and Co-Executive Director of the Center for Popular Democracy, one of the largest community organizing networks in the country, with 54 affiliate organizations in 32 states and Puerto Rico. She is running for Lt. Gov. in the June 28 Democratic primary with NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams who is running for Governor. The Lt. Governor's race was blown wide open last week when now-former Lt. Gov Brian Benjamin resigned following his indictment on federal corruption charges. Under New York election law, there's only a slim chance that Gov. Kathy Hochul can have Benjamin removed from the ballot and replaced with someone more to her liking. This unexpected turn of events has brought a surge of endorsements to Archila in the past week and greatly increased the chances of an unabashedly left candidate winning statewide office in New York for the first time in decades, if ever.

Ana Maria Archila is a resistance icon. She’s known by many as the “lady in the elevator” after her confrontation with Senator Jeff Flake went viral during the confirmation hearings for Justice Kavanaugh. But that wasn’t her first rodeo. Ana Maria has been disrupting, bird-dogging and advocating for human rights and dignity since she emigrated here at the age of 17.She teaches us that disruption is essential to slowing things down and getting people in power to listen. Everyday people speaking truth to power is what this country is all about. The resister. The video. The action. If this episode resonates for you, we’d love for you to take a screenshot and tag us on Instagram stories @ctznwell @anamariaarchila1 and @popdemoc, and click below to tweet:"We are allowing each other to see one another more clearly, we are allowing the country to see itself more clearly." @AnaMariaArchil2 of @popdemoc on #CTZN Podcast with @kkellyyoga. Check it out: ctznwell.org/ctznpodcast @ctznwellMore about this episode:In this episode, Ana Maria shows us how everyday people can speak truth to power and how courage is contagious. We saw it in the wake of #metoo, in the wave of stories that flooded the Hart Building during the Kavanaugh hearings and, most recently, in the avalanche of abortion stories that emerged in response to the war on reproductive freedom. Our stories, each and every one of them, has been necessary for creating a moment of reckoning and making our democracy come alive. This is how the healing happens, she says. ”We are allowing each other to see one another more clearly, we are allowing the country to see itself more clearly,” and we are weaving a fabric of community care and courage that is challenging the status quo and changing the game. That is what real citizenship is all about. Not the kind that requires documents or cares where you were born. But the kind that shows up, speaks out and fights for justice for all. Who were those brave women who cornered Senator Flake in the elevator? Ana Maria Archila and Maria Gallagher became famous overnight for sharing a deep, personal secret on national television. In the days and months that followed, the duo became targets of abusive messages and violent threats, highlighting a culture that is founded on keeping women quiet. For Maria, who is just 23 years old, she had never said the term “sexually assaulted” out loud. For Ana Maria, the moment was about reclaiming her shame; it was an example of how women across the country are bringing democracy alive—in hallways, in coffee shops, in airports, and in elevators. In an emotional and poignant conversation, the pair sit down to discuss why it is so important to listen to survivors, and how the conversation around consent needs an overhaul. This is Dare I Say, the podcast from HarpersBAZAAR.com, where we sit in on unfiltered conversations between the most influential women of our time—those daring to make the difference we deserve Trigger warning: This episode includes conversations about sexual assault.
