A snapshot of how employers are managing and responding to cases of workplace sexual harassment in Singapore, Indonesia, France, Spain, Germany, the UK, Australia, and Eastern Europe. Employers across the world are stepping up their efforts to prevent, manage and respond to cases of workplace sexual harassment. While the problem is widely acknowledged, individual nations are tackling this in different ways. Employers need a clear understanding of their reporting obligations so, in this episode, legal experts based in eight countries explain the common and contrasting ways that governments, legislators and regulators are responding. And importantly, the panel explains how employers can take robust action to prevent, manage and respond to cases of sexual harassment. The discussion demonstrates that it is not enough for organisations to only set up policies, procedures, and training. Employers also need to proactively manage risks and should consider measures such as appointing internal ‘champions' to share information with employees. And when allegations do arise – thorough and proper investigations should be carried out. Workplace sexual harassment is just as detrimental for employers, as it is for employees. A new study has found about a third of the New Zealand workforce have experienced it, with around 36 percent of females and 30 percent of males targeted. It shows employees may be more likely to suffer burnout, stress, or act counterproductively at work and call in sick. Massey University Professor Jarrod Haar says they're also more likely to quit, which is just as bad for employers. "They take the knowledge and the insights from the organisation with them and leave- they're less likely, if they haven't quit, to stay there and not perform as well as they used to." Michigan State suspended Spartans football coach Mel Tucker for an inappropriate phone sex call with rape victim and sexual assault victims advocate Brenda Tracy. She says the call was not consensual. He said it was. Tracy had been hired to speak to the Spartans football team about sexual violence. It appears the university knew about the accusations but only suspended Tucker after the story came to light when USA Today broke the news to the public. It is likely Tucker has coached his last game for the Spartans after signing a 10-year 95-million dollar deal in 2021. A high performance athletics coach has been banned from working in Aotearoa for a decade after admitting harassing and mistreating athletes, including minors. Jeremy McColl who previously coached star pole vaulters Eliza McCartney and Olivia McTaggart has resigned from his job after accepting his conduct amounted to serious misconduct. Athletics NZ says a number of complaints were made about him in May this year. An independent investigation subsequently found McColl had mistreated athletes..including failing to adequately manage injuries. It also found evidence of harassment, inappropriate communicaton through social media and text, including inapproprate sexual references, aggravated by the fact a number of the sports people were minors. The behaviour was over a number of years. Athletics NZ says it is also aware of reports that Jeremy McColl is being investigated by the police. It also applauded the courage of those who spoke-up and apologised to the athletes for the harm they have suffered. Matt Crawford speaks with author Winnie M. Li about her book, Complicit: A Novel. While lecturing at an obscure college, Hollywood has-been, Sarah Lai is visited by a journalist asking about her past work with celebrated film producer Hugo North. As Sarah recounts the dark and sordid details of her past life and the industry, she gave her all to, she realizes that she also has some sins to atone for. A prescient novel that makes us all contemplate how we would react in certain situations; Li and I dive into that and so much more. How do the actions of these individuals' mar hundreds of people's work and livelihood? How do we measure the acceptable social punishment these people received based on their actions. This book will stir emotions and thoughts and I highly recommend it.

Dom welcomes in Representative Abby Major onto the Dom Giordano Program just minutes after Representative Mike Zabel sent a letter to House Leader Joanna McClinton telling that he will resign from his post following a press conference by Major in which she pointed to advances made by the Democratic politician. Major tells that as a woman, she wanted to stand against a continued trend in Harrisburg of this type of casual sexual harassment to prevent others from having to suffer what she and other women have had to go through. Major explains that this was just one instance of many that she's heard about Representative Zabel, and regularly these things are overlooked, which isn't fair to our female lawmakers. Right to Be's Co-Founder and Executive Director Emily May + Deputy Director Jorge Arteaga join Zerlina and Jess on the show to talk about their new book I've Got Your Back: The Indispensable Guide to Stopping Harassment When You See It, available on May 10th! Every day, we see spike after spike in incidents of harassment. Whether it's harassment against women, black lives, the LGBTQ+ community, or the rise in anti-Asian-American harassment since COVID-19 hit the US in 2020, we're all feeling a bit more anxious and maybe a little helpless. But, what can we do about it without sacrificing our safety?I've Got Your Back: The Indispensable Guide to Stopping Harassment When You See It (on sale May 10) by Jorge Arteaga and Emily May of Right to Be, a globally-recognized non-profit working to eradicate harassment and discrimination in all its forms, teaches readers the ins and outs of bystander intervention using their methodology: the 5D's of bystander intervention—distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct. Each chapter of I've Got Your Back dives deeply into what these D's can look like in practice, whether incidents of harassment take place in public, online, or at work. There's even a quiz to determine what kind of bystander intervention feels the most comfortable for you, based on the type of harassment you're witnessing. We live in a world where harassment may still happen. But when it happens, we hope there will be someone who stands up against it. We have to be the change. Maybe that person will be you.
