There's an art to bringing history into modern creativity as more than a reference.  Sibella Court is adept at it. The creative director, author and interior and product designer has made a career out of creating with her love of history at the forefront. When you learn she grew up with two incredibly creative parents — a builder father skilled in transforming spaces and a mother who specialised in Central Asian textiles — her multifaceted creative career comes as no surprise.  After studying history at university in Sydney, and getting a start at Australian Vogue, she spent a decade shooting editorial in New York. Since returning to Australia in 2006, she's written and published six books, hosted a TV series, and designed the interiors for some of Sydney's best-known restaurants and bars, including Mr Wong's and Palmer & Co.  Listen in as Vince and Sibella Court discuss her lifelong love of history, working at Australian Vogue in the early 90s and the seismic impact the death of a parent can have.  https://thesocietyinc.com.au/  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on The Quiet Life Michael speaks with Rachel Hunter - Mother, Yoga + Meditation Teacher, Supermodel, and Author. She talks about where she came from and who she was as a young woman, the challenges she's faced throughout her life as well as the joy's, and how she found her way to where she is today through quiet practices. She shares what it was like to face judgements throughout her life in the public eye, why she loves feeling resistance within, and the moment she realized she was running from being fully herself. Rachel was born in New Zealand and left home at 17 to become a supermodel on the other side of the world in New York City. Her career took off, landing her with FORD Models and on the pages of Italian Vogue, Australian Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Revlon Covergirl, and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She found herself married by 21, further thrust into the public eye, and soon after her daughter and then son were born. After years on and off the road traveling, she started to ask herself existential questions - who am I? Where am I going? She left her high profile marriage and became immersed in motherhood, exploration, and work. She rode the waves of life until her mother's diagnosis and ultimate demise to cancer. In her mother's final days, Rachel asked her what she regret - her mother's reply changed everything. She said “I regret not being + doing me! Being fully who I wanted to be!” Rachel stepped off a plane in India in 2017 to process her grief, never intending to teach. She has since spent many hours studying yoga and meditation in the foothills of the Himalayas, and has found her place as both a student and a teacher of these ancient wisdoms and philosophies. You can find out more about Rachel on her website https://www.rachelhunter.com/ where you can join her online yoga membership, Rituals. As many of you know, The Grace Tales, the company I’ve spent the last seven years building was recently acquired by AllBright, the career network for women. After an incredibly challenging 2020, I couldn’t be more excited about my next chapter. I launched The Grace Tales when my firstborn was a newborn, and at the time, I was also the deputy editor at Australian Vogue. The Grace Tales was almost like therapy for me, it gave me so much insight into the world of motherhood. I spent many years attending fashion shows all over the world, but I’d swap those shows any day for a Grace Tales shoot where I’d meet and connect with so many women. Connection is at the heart of what AllBright stands for. And today, I am so excited for you to meet Debbie Wosskow OBE, who along with Anna Jones, founded AllBright and I have the extreme pleasure of now working for. Debbie is, by her own admission, a serial entrepreneur. And an incredibly successful one at that. She sold her last business - subscription-based home exchange business Love Home Swap to Wyndham for $53 million. Aside from being a fierce supporter of women, she is a Member of the Mayor of London's Business Advisory Board and sits on the Board of the Women’s Prize for Fiction. In 2016 Debbie was awarded an OBE for her services to business. She won the Evening Standard’s Business Award for ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ 2018 and was shortlisted for City AM’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2017. In this conversation we talk about the three ‘g’s’ which every entrepreneur needs, the ‘why’ of AllBright and how 80% of success is about turning up. AllBright Australia has now launched (make sure you check it out at allbrightcollective.com) and I can’t wait for you to get involved in this incredible platform – let’s meet Debbie Wosskow. Death by alcohol is a real thing. And a brush with this fact of life completely turned things around for our featured guest in this episode. She asserts, “The worst thing that ever happened to me was drinking alcohol.” In this 7th installment of our podcast, One Year No Beer Co-Founder Ruari Fairbairns talks to Lucy Rocca. Lucy is the founder of the phenomenon that is the Soberistas, a movement which has built an incredibly supportive, non-judgemental community helping many people conquer long-term alcohol dependencies. She has written five best-selling books and regularly inspires people to take up alcohol free living. The ‘magic potion’ Listen as Lucy recounts how she started drinking at the young age of 13. She had thought, accordingly, that alcohol was like a magic potion that made her feel attractive, made her ‘fit in’, and made things seem so much more fun. She was so seduced she embraced a hedonistic lifestyle basking in alcohol throughout her twenties. She confesses, “I wasn’t ever drinking for the taste, or to get a little bit tipsy. I was drinking to get drunk.” Lucy was divorced and a single parent in her late twenties. Alcohol became a ‘self-medication’ for her. And she relates, in this episode, how she carried on with the routine of frequenting bars, muddling through the week and living for the weekend, until she was 35. Wake up call It was that fateful night in April 2011 when Lucy’s life was changed forever. She remembers how she was drinking alone, being very depressed, and downing 3 bottles of wine and a litter of strong cider. She eventually collapsed on a pavement outside of her house, and woke up in a hospital. She thought she could’ve died, and she never drank alcohol again after that. Soberistas Drawing from her own experiences as a heavy drinker (for twenty years) who did not find any support in quitting drinking, Lucy created Soberistas. She discusses in this podcast how she saw the need for an ‘online space where people could be completely anonymous and honest about their drinking.’ The movement started with a blog. And it was such a sensation it initially attracted at least 20,000 people to sign up. It has been featured in Australian Vogue, Canadian Elle, Red Magazine, and several popular TV programs. Beautiful redemption Lucy muses, in retrospect, how she became fitter, healthier, more productive and creative, a better mom, a nicer friend, and how she now has more money, being alcohol free: “I feel the best I ever felt (and I’m nearly 41) and I look the best I ever looked . . . The single act of stopping drinking has completely changed my life.” LINKS & RESOURCES OYNB Website: https://www.oneyearnobeer.com/ OYNB Faceboook Page: https://www.facebook.com/Oneyearnobeer/ OYNB Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/199505820380513/ OYNB Twitter: https://twitter.com/oynbuk/ OYNB Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oneyearnobeer/   LUCY ROCCA’S LINKS Lucy Rocca’s Books Soberistas Website: http://soberistas.com/ Soberistas Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/Soberistas/ SoberistasTwitter: https://twitter.com/soberistas/ Soberistas Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/soberistas/ Soberistas Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/soberistas/ Soberistas Futures Twitter: https://twitter.com/SoberFuturesCIO/

Today's guest is a lady that I heard on a show, and loved the passion for life, and the leap of faith that she took so dramatically. Several years ago, she was diagnosed with clinical depression and suffering from drug addictions, eating disorders and corporate burnout, she hit rock bottom. And in that position of rock bottom, in that darkness she found the light. She realized she had the power to bring herself to happiness…and that is exactly what she did. Yep leap of faith time came beckoning, and she left her high-powered job in advertising to follow her heart and engage in the work she does today. Now this isn't a story, when as soon as she landed from the leap she hit the ground running and had it all planned out. She started her journey, and began documenting her odyssey on the website she had built "playwiththeworld.com." And now her dream to be a writer, happy, inspired and and of course an inspiration to many across the world has come true, and she is the bestselling author of Find Your Happy, an Inspirational Guide to Loving Life to Its Fullest, and a six-time contributing author to Chicken Soup for The Soul. Her work has been recognized in media outlets across the world such as Good Morning America, Good Day New York, Inside Edition, HuffPost Live, Health Magazine and Australian Vogue and she is an online columnist for Huffington Post, MindBodyGreen, Healing Lifestyles & Spas and The Daily Love. Wow, everything she does is to help us connect with our true self and without apology to live your authentic purpose. She teaches people how to courageously follow their heart. So can she remember the night before she went into her advertising job and told them all.."I'm off to follow my heart"? And does she see now the world with different, knowing eyes, and cant quite understand why the rest are struggling to see things the same way? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Shannon Kaiser
