In this conversation we will examine the concept of flash teams with Ben Watts. We will focus on why they can pose such a challenge in highly stressful situations. We examine the concepts and issues of ego, lack of team ethos, lack of shared understanding/clear plan, poor communications, name use, active listening issues, poor followship, anchoring and much more. We also examine when things are working well and some of the core fundamental components of this including collaboration, use of checklists, feedback mechanisms, closed loop communication, affirmation, shared mental models and overt followship and leadership. We also look at one of the key fundamental tenets of flash teams, that of consistently calm cadence of communication.   To do this I have Ben Watts with me, Ben is no stranger to the podcast and has spoken with me on a number of episodes, most recently around the bleeding patient. Ben is a critical care retrieval practitioner working with the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) in Scotland and also works as a World Extreme Medicine (WEM) faculty member. In the conversation we examine:   ·      The concept of flash teams  ·      When it goes right – what this looks like from a flow of communication ·      When it goes wrong and how can we correct it ·      The importance of effective communication  ·      Feedback mechanisms to course correct for future performance ·      Error detection – Ben's approach to error trapping  ·      Distraction and environmental factors - signal versus noise  ·      Decision making paralysis and the concept of ‘overwhelm'. ·      Correcting poor teams when they are going wrong. ·      Training and education around flash teams  My thanks to Ben for an engaging and interesting conversation

In this session we are speaking with Ben Watts and Jamie Pattison, both World Extreme Medicine faculty and retrieval/specialist paramedics. We wanted to both address and highlight the dangers of sudden cold-water immersion and do a deep dive into some of the pathophysiological pathways that occur. This is both in-light of recent events but also prospectively to promote discussion around the very real danger of cold-water immersion. Both Ben and Jamie have worked and indeed do work in the highlands of Scotland where temperatures frequently fall below zero. We know that upon water entry a series of physiological responses are evoked via cooling of the skin, superficial nerves and muscles in the limbs, and finally deep body tissue, all of which can result in hazardous outcomes. In this episode, we welcome back Critical Care Paramedic Ben Watts to delve a little deeper into some of the ideas and concepts around continuous improvement.  Alongside WEM Trauma Lead Eoin Walker, Ben considers the significance of marginal gains and the 'power of the 1%' in developing performance, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.  The pair discuss the toolkit available to medics - both technical and non-technical, that can help us all become better clinicians - from the essentials of non-verbal communication, to the power of vulnerability loops in creating more honest debriefing, as well as the importance of humility as we strive to hit peak performance each day. They also consider our relationship with failure and how our perceptions of it should be adjusted - from a source of disappointment to a chance to learn more about how you can improve as both an individual and a team.

Welcome to the second "On-Week" episode of our show! New To You Show is getting rolling, we have a twitter @newtoyoushow where we'll let you know new episodes are up, and pass along any news related to our show.  Segment 1: The Stars My Destination (book) - or Tiger, Tiger John Holt (@lordjoho) recommends the 1950's science fiction novel from New York wrtier Alfred Bester. One of the two great novels by Bester from this time period. No movie adaptions as of yet, the audiobook is findable but not in print, but they've made a grapic novel (which is sadly now out of print!) You can find this book on Amazon in Kindle and Trade Paperback format. Segment 2: Central Reservation (album) Mary Varn (npccomic.com) recommends a turn of the century album from a contemporary "folktronic" female singer-songwriter. Beth Orton's Central Reserveration was released in 1999.  A British musician, she collaborated with one of the Chemical Brothers on earlier albums, and with Ben Harper and Ben Watts on this album. You can find this album on Amazon, iTunes, Rdio, and Spotify, among others.  Segment 3: The Gods Must Be Crazy (film) Keith Vincent (earthlingkeith.tumblr.com) recommends a South African comedic film that saw surprising success worldwide upon its release in the 80's. Written, Directed, and Produced by James Uys, mathmetician teacher turned Justice of the Peace turned film maker, this is a refreshing take on filmmaking coming out of a period of gritty realism.  The Movie is available from on DVD and through iTunes.
