You keep triggering my relationship with my sisters, when we talked about Barbie dolls and things like that, and now it's Clairol. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: The beauty product. I'm trying to even remember. I should know this, right? I had three sisters and raised four daughters, and Clairol should be firmly entrenched in my vocabulary. I know it's a female beauty product line, hair, skin, makeup, that kind of stuff, all of it. Stephen Semple: So hair's the big one. That's the one we're going to talk about because that's basically the origin of Clairol was dyeing hair. But I was thinking I almost need to pick one of these ones in the future and have your sisters on with you. I think that would be quite a lot of fun. Dave Young: Oh, please, sir. Stephen Semple: I even have the title for the podcast, Dave Young, angsty. Dave Young: Angsty. Stephen Semple: So, Clairol, it's an old company. It was founded in 1931 by Joan and Lawrence Gelb and a business partner of theirs, James Romeo. And what they saw was this hair coloring preparation in France called Clairol. So it was already called Clairol, and it was being done in France. So what they did is they co-founded the Clairol Company to import products from France. Here's how big they got. And I don't know when it changed to them having the international rights and things along that lines. I didn't really go down that rabbit hole, but give you an idea how big they got. In 1957, so you're basically talking 26 years after they founded, they were sold to Bristol-Myers, and then in 2004, they hit 1.6 billion in sales. And today, they're under a company called Coty, which was acquired from P&N for $12.5 billion. So they became a really big company in the space. But the thing that we don't realize is how revolutionary a product Clairol hair dye was, because hair coloring at the time was very looked down upon. It was very frowned upon. And today, it's really common, like half of all American women between 13 and 75 color their hair. Dave Young: Right. Stephen Semple: Oh, and Dave, there's hope for you. It's becoming more popular with men as well. Dave Young: I believe that. And I've known men that do it, that I have a feeling always believed that nobody knew they were doing it. They believed that. Stephen Semple: Well, see, for me, it's not even an option because you have hair. I don't. So... Dave Young: Well, I mean, you've got that white goatee. I've got a white goatee, and yeah, I agree. Honestly, I've always felt better grave and gone. And so I'm thankful for my flowing locks. Stephen Semple: Yeah, there you go. Rub it in, rub it in. So anyway, it is now becoming more popular with men. But as I said, it wasn't always, and a great example of this is in the 1950s, Betty Friedan wrote a book, The Feminine Mystique, and she said there's three things women should not do, should not smoke in public. Now this had an impact in the cigarette business. Remember, we talked about Marlboro? Where originally started off as a woman's cigarette, and women's smoking declined, and they pivoted to it being a men's cigarette.

Anne was previously CEO and Co-founder of consulting firm The FORWARD Group, focused on growth strategies for mid-sized companies and key executives. Anne was also President and COO of Ebony, Jet & Fashion Fair Cosmetics, Johnson Publishing Company. PAT TRACEY: Grew up into a medical family in Trinidad and Tobago, which then migrated to Antigua. After a stint as a flight attendant, Pat burst onto the runway in 1980 as a professional fashion model for Issey Miyake - with whom she worked very closely, along with Kenzo, Gianfranco Ferre, Yves St Laurent, Chanel, Patrick Kelly, Giorgio Armani and others. Her work arena became Europe and Tokyo. She was photographed by the great photographer, Peter Lindbergh, for Italian Bazaar, and graced Essence and other magazines. She enjoyed commercial work with such clients as Avon, Clairol, Revlon, Clairol, Emanuel Ungaro, Harry Winston and Fendi, donning swimwear in the Sahara or bicycling in the Montana glaciers. She has been represented by agents such as Wilhelmina, Ford in New York City and top European agencies with present representation still by Wilhemina. Beside being a world traveler, a natural transition for her was to become a portrait, travel and lifestyle photographer, but she also continued her love for tie-dyeing which has extended into a successful tie-dye clothing line, called Mayaro, named after a beach in Trinidad, she frequented as a child. Still enjoying the constant work in the modeling realm, Pat also enjoys giving back, offering full service career coaching to aspiring models, as well as professional image and etiquette consultation. She helps them build their model portfolios and understand the business, with pageant headshots forming a large percentage of her business. Pat learned from an early age with her grandmother who managed a large orphanage in Trinidad, the importance of giving back to the youth and keeping one's feet firmly planted on the ground, Lessons that have sustained her throughout her life. Hair care has been a passion for Annie Young-Scrivner, CEO of Wella Company, since she was 13 years old when she started a side business cutting and perming hair. So when the executive was recruited from Godiva where she served as CEO for three years to join the 140-year-old hair-care and nail company, she jumped at the opportunity. Private equity firm KKR named Young-Scrivner as the CEO of Wella Company in Oct. 2020 following the announcement of its acquisition of 60% of the company from Coty. Wella distributes hair-care brands such as Wella Professionals, Clairol, Nioxin, GHD and nail polish brand OPI. In Dec. 2021, the company celebrated its first anniversary as an independent company. KKR and Wella Company have noted the ambitions to IPO in approximately four years. “We have a tremendous opportunity to be an incredible company. The first thing we're focused on is making sure we have the right [products] to meet the needs of the consumer,” said Young-Scrivner on the Glossy Beauty podcast. “The second thing is making sure we're growing in the right way. There's going to be lots of [exit] options for us.” When it comes to building a product and brand portfolio that stands the test of time, Wella is focusing on storytelling across all of its brands. This includes Wella Professional. Its Shinefinity long-lasting color glaze speaks to the health of hair, with the tagline “Shine you can feel." Wella has over 1,000 patented products and technologies it can use to position itself as a superior beauty company offering innovative products, Young-Scrivner said. OPI has also looked to unique opportunities to capture new customers and communities by partnering with Xbox in January. So far these efforts are paying off, as Wella's professional sales channel has experienced a double-digit sales growth compared to the fiscal year 2019, and both its e-commerce and retail channels are growing substantially, said Young-Scrivner.

She became an actor and performer as a very good ventriloquist in her youth. Later she gained her Fine Arts and Teaching Degree for grades K-12, fell back to her entertaining roots taking Opera classes, and performing theatrically Off-Broadway when she auditioned for the role of “Rizzo” in ‘Grease' on Broadway. After being discovered at a casting for Italian Vogue, Tracey "Africa" Norman's modeling career skyrocketed. In 1975, she memorably appeared as the face on a box of Clairol hair dye sold in drugstores across the U.S. In the middle of this formidable rise, Tracey was outed while on a shoot for Essence magazine. "And that's the day my career ended," she says. "Because the next day I called my agency and there was nothing." Tracey joins us to look back on her legendary modeling career, talk about how being outed affected her relationship with both the Black and LGBTQ+ communities, and says the fashion world has still not fully embraced women of color. "I'm not seeing anyone of color do the things that I have done and sign contracts. It's only been my white counterpart who are working, who are doing the shows, who are on the covers of major magazines."  This is part of our new LGBTQ+ Elders Project. Jackie Lyle, Executive Director of Performing Arts Serving Acadiana, known as "PASA," joins Discover Lafayette to discuss the organization's mission to provide local access to great performing arts. Jackie has worked tirelessly over the past three decades to bring unique arts programming to Acadiana. She is a passionate spokesperson for the many ways art impacts our economy, from hiring people in transportation, printing, recording, and sound, live musicians, costumers, etc. "It's vital that this industry recovers. We have got to be in venues and selling tickets" to thrive and survive. A native of Oberlin, Louisiana, Jackie moved to Lafayette at seven years of age and followed the stereotypical path of a young girl in the 70s. She had always loved dancing, playing the piano, and being a band member; while she loved the arts, Jackie says she never had the confidence to pursue a career as a professional performer so she graduated in Psychology from LSU. She never intended to work, but to be a wife and mother. However, upon returning home from college, her dad said, "Jackie, you need a job with health benefits!" Always the dutiful daughter, Jackie followed her dad's advice and became a Clairol account executive, which gave her great sales training, and the opportunity to learn the ropes of business activities. Her next career move landed her in a full-time job as an account executive with the Times of Acadiana, a start-up periodical. She had the opportunity to work with James Edmunds, Steve May, and Richard Baudoin, all well-known names in the publishing business in this region. Jackie credits this position with helping her understand how the government and community forces worked, and the management team constantly challenged her to do new things and spread her wings. By the end of her tenure with the Times of Acadiana, she led a sales team, had her own publication, and wrote a weekly column for the Times. She was ready to fly successfully on her own. At that time, in the early 1980s, Lafayette's art scene was enriched by the productions presented by the Fine Arts Foundation which began in 1975. The non-profit brought in such renowned artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Rudolph Nureyev, and Gregory Hines. But with the oil and gas bust of the late 1980s, the Heymann Center closing for renovations, and the failure of the organization to pay its taxes, the Fine Arts Foundation folded and filed for bankruptcy in the late 1980s. From this aftermath, PASA (originally known as the "Performing Arts Society of Acadiana") emerged under the helm of Jackie Lyle. Jackie looked back with pride on the impact that her work has had over the years, including having PASA hired to help with the opening of the Manship Theatre in Baton Rouge and the Grand Opera House of the South in Crowley. "PASA's goal is to provide local access to great performing arts. That is our #1 goal. Great performing arts you can attend locally is what makes a community great. This does not mean sold-out performances or making "x" amount of money. Our mission is local access. When we are able to return to daytime performances for local students, that will be the most important thing that we can do. So many kids never have the opportunity to step foot in the Heymann. That is a transformative experience as many kids have never seen a grand piano played. We also now have a trailer that will be our local stage to bring performances into neighborhoods. As soon as cold weather ends, we'll be going into three different neighborhoods." PASA has also commissioned new works, which means supporting the creation of original performances of song and dance by providing direction and financing. PASA's first such work involved telling the story of the settlement of the first Acadians in our region. This pivotal work is still actively touring after more than 27 years. In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Jolorie Williams, the General Manager of Revlon. In her role, she proudly oversees the Multicultural Division, which includes Cream of Nature products and Contract Services. Jolorie loves working in haircare and even has some mannequin heads in her home where she tries out the latest products in the pipeline. Her first job was in a non-beauty role at Bristol-Myers Squib. But at the time, they also owned Clairol, and when a position opened in their Professional Beauty Division, she landed it and never looked back. When she started, her job was in "ethnic haircare," and she loves how consumers demand has helped the category evolve. Jolorie also held pivotal roles at L'Oréal, working in Multicultural Haircare and Lancome, overseeing makeup marketing. Then she moved over to the Estee Lauder brand, Origins, which exposed her to how a brand with freestanding retail stores operates. But there is something about haircare that Jolorie loves, so when the opportunity to join Revlon presented itself, she joined their Professional Division before she took on her recent role. In this podcast episode you will hear from our BCEN friend Sorayah (So RAY uh) Bourenane. In 2013, Sorayah began as a Professional Student Nurse Extern in the Emergency Center (EC) at a large academic specialty cancer hospital in Houston, Texas. She graduated from Texas Woman's University (TWU) with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Nursing in May 2014, and started her nursing career as a New Graduate Nurse in the EC. In June 2016, Sorayah was promoted to Clinical Resource Nurse, which served as a bridge position while obtaining a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) certification. In May 2019, she obtained her MSN, CNL, and now serves as the CNL for the EC and Clinical Decision Unit. As a Clinical Nurse Leader, Sorayah provides empirical data to evaluate clinical practice quality, validate intervention efficacy and steer quality improvement initiatives. She brings innovation, data-driven decision-making, technology integration, and evidence-based practice to the bedside to implement strategic practice changes to improve patient care. Sorayah specializes in process and change management, interdisciplinary collaboration, patient advocacy, adult learning, and oncologic emergencies. She is also a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and hopes to establish an Oncology Emergency Nursing certification in the near future. In her pre-nursing life, she worked as an Event Production Manager for various entertainment, live marketing, and industry events such as Coachella, Comicon, E3, CES, and others along the West Coast of the United States. She assisted in event production for clients including Lady Gaga, Bravo TV, Dell, Alienware, Coachella, USA Network and many more. Additionally, Sorayah worked as a runway & print model based in Los Angeles, California for including LA Fashion Week, BCBG, David's Bridal, Clairol, and Zara. Sorayah was also fortunate enough to have performed with the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps (Denver, CO) as 1st Bass Drum in 2007 and 2nd Bass Drum in 2009 in the Summer Music Games hosted by Drum Corps International (DCI). This experience provided opportunities to serve as a specialty music instructor for high schools and independent drumline organizations across the country teaching music and marching. Joining Yuliana today is Nancy Castle Donahue, a model who rose to the top of her field in the 70's and 80's, becoming one of the most successful fashion models of her time. During her reign in the fashion arena, Donahue's face was on the cover of virtually every fashion magazine in the world, and she also led several significant cosmetic campaigns for brands like Helena Rubenstein, Avon and Clairol. She has now devoted herself to fitness with certifications that  include National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and American Council on Exercise (ACE) Certified Personal Trainer, 200 hr. Registered Yoga Teacher through Yogafit, and Standing and Mat Pilates through Physical Mind Institute of New York. She joins our host today to discuss the significant challenges she faced as well as different redirections she has had in her life and how they have shaped her into the success that she is today.   Nancy begins the conversation by talking about the challenging event that impacted her life - dealing with addiction. She goes on to detail this battle with drugs and her entry into rehab, the painful process of talking to family about addiction, and how she battled with eating disorders at an early age in life. Nancy then takes us on a journey through the different careers she has had, as well as raising her son. Dealing with being judged about physical appearance as a model, Nancy tells us that maintaining your self-esteem is crucial, and she offers advice on how you can start a career even late in life by finding what you love and doing it. In episode 87 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on working with Richard Avedon, getting books signed by him, remembering stories about Avedon told to him by photographer Jean Loup Sieff and long-time Avedon assistant Gideon Lewin takes on the UNP Photo Proust Questionnaire in which he speaks about fellow Avedon assistant and photographer Hiro. Gideon Lewin was born in Jerusalem, Israel and graduated from the Art Center College of Design, in Los Angeles, majoring in advertising and photography. He was the studio manager and 'right-hand man' to legendary photographer Richard Avedon for 16 years during which time he collaborated with Avedon on many projects, including exhibitions, books, whilst traveling with him extensively for editorial assignments. Lewin also continued to create his own work during this period and established his own independent studio in 1980 collaborating with American and European designers on advertising, promotions and books, including Bill Blass, Avon, Revlon, Clairol, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Lewin has photographed and produced two books and his editorial work has been published in Harpers Bazaar, Vogue and Elle, and many other magazines. He has photographed personalities including Clint Eastwood, Lauren Bacall, Ariel Sharon, Rupert Murdoch, Donna Karen, and of course Richard Avedon. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the museum of Photography in Mougins, France, and his work has been featured in solo exhibitions in the US and Europe. Gideon Lewin, the Avedon Years, 1964-1980, was published in 2019.
