YDirector Barry Sonnenfeld joins Jason Alexander and Peter Tilden on this episode of the Really? no Really? Podcast with more true stories from his career as both a Hollywood director and cinematographer. Peter discovered a TED Talk that Barry did called How to Get People to Do What You Want, that was fascinating, funny and very informative. Barry also has a new book out called, Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time: True Stories from a Career in Hollywood, that's filled with fascinating stories spanning his whole career in Hollywood. From starting off as a cinematographer for the Coen Brothers to directing blockbuster movies like Men In Black, The Addams Family and Get Shorty. Barry will share some pretty entertaining stories. Some of our favorite stories include a scene from Get Shorty that needed to be cut for budget purposes but was also the head of MGM's favorite scene. Plus, you'll want to hear about his story working with Tommy Lee Jones and Rip Torn on Men In Black. They truly hated he each other. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hollywood loves making movies about itself: on this show alone, we've done Sunset Boulevard, Sullivan's Travels, and Singin' in the Rain. Get Shorty (1995) is Elmore Leonard's contribution to the genre, a film that was “meta” before the term became overused: we are given the illusion of spontaneity and the story–like one of Leonard's novels–seems like it's being made up as it moves along. This perfect 90s movie is a lighthearted and wholly enjoyable dramatization of screenwriter William Goldman's famous description of the industry: “Nobody knows anything.” Incredible bumper music by John Deley. Originally conceived at the end of last season before life and scheduling got in the way, with Lindo's recent Oscar nomination for SINNERS, this winter/spring was the perfect time to discuss one of our favorite scene-stealers of the last 35+ years on Watch With Jen. Referencing everything, including our favorites like HEIST and GET SHORTY, in this episode, we took a closer look at MALCOLM X, THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, THE CORE, and A LIFE LESS ORDINARY to illustrate that he's always one of the most compelling parts of any movie, no matter how it turns out in the end. On episode 317 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson alongside AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Josh Parham to go back 30 years and take a look at the 68th Academy Awards, covering the films of 1995. On this retrospective, the AW team take a trip to 1995, where actor Mel Gibson rode off the with multiple Oscars, winning Best Picture for his war epic, Braveheart. While a hit within its own right, it was a bit of a shocking win considering many believed that Apollo 13 was going to take home Oscar's top prize. It's a massive upset that would have ripple effects over the course of Academy history that would have make up wins not just for Ron Howard, but for other nominees in this Oscar field. 1995 is a stacked, incredible year of cinema that the gang tries to reflect a little better than what the Academy nominated with films like Heat, Showgirls, Get Shorty, Clueless, Seven, Before Sunset, Friday, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and more getting either mentions, nominations, or wins in the big top eight categories.Maybe one of them wins Best Picture, maybe they don't, you'll have to listen and try not to fall down a flight of stairs to find out. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 1995, briefly discuss talk about Braveheart as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to three films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 2h47m. We will be back in next week for another retrospective over the 83rd Academy Awards, covering the films of 2010. Till then, let's get into it. In this week's episode of Born to Watch, the boys dive headfirst into a movie that feels a little too real after the last few years. Our Outbreak 1995 Movie Review isn't just a look back at a blockbuster about a killer virus; it's a full breakdown of a film that somehow became more relevant decades after its release. For Whitey, Gow and Damo, revisiting Wolfgang Petersen's tense, fast-paced viral thriller has stirred up memories of VHS nights, cinema crowds, and that one mate coughing a bit too loudly during COVID. But Outbreak isn't just a virus film. As the boys quickly discover, it's an action romance conspiracy hybrid, depending entirely on which one of them you ask. From the moment Dustin Hoffman strides in as Sam Daniels, the stubborn, brilliant, pigheaded virologist who refuses to let common sense get in the way of his moral compass, the team is hooked. Damo is convinced it's a love story, Gow reckons it's a straight-up action blockbuster, and Whitey is adamant it's a conspiracy movie wrapped in a hazmat suit. One thing they all agree on, though, is that Outbreak pumps along at an absolute clip. Even with the science occasionally held together by duct tape, there's never a dull moment. The boys relive everything from the opening scene in Zaire to the helicopter chase that absolutely no one asked for but everyone secretly loved. The idiocy of certain characters becomes a major talking point. Jimbo, Jim Bob, Hibbo, whoever he is, returns from Africa with a virus, bleeds from multiple orifices, and still wanders around town like he's only got hay fever. His girlfriend passionately kisses him while he looks like he's one hour from the morgue. Then there's the world's worst lab tech, sticking his hand inside a spinning blood machine like he's checking the oil in a 1992 Corolla.Hoffman's performance gets a full deep dive. Gow breaks down his entire career from The Graduate to Rain Man to Wag the Dog. Whitey points out how small Dustin Hoffman really is, particularly when stacked up next to Renee Russo, and how this might be the least believable on-screen couple we've covered since Sharon Stone and anyone. The crew also discuss the real MVP of the movie, the man with the greatest eyebrows in cinema history, Donald Sutherland, delivering pure villainy with the energy of a man who genuinely enjoys ordering towns to be firebombed.Morgan Freeman, as always, earns unanimous praise for bringing gravitas with every line, even when delivering military exposition about viral containment strategies. JT Walsh gets special mention for turning up for one single scene and blowing everyone off the screen with a thundering, no-nonsense speech that still hits hard. From 90s nostalgia to scientific nitpicking, from snorbs reporting chaos to the classic Born to Watch overs-and-unders debate, this episode has everything. The boys even pick their own 1995 sleepers and duds, featuring Clueless, Just Cause, and Get Shorty. And yes, Damo manages to squeeze in a reference to Big Tit Monastery. Of course he does.If you loved Outbreak back in the day, or if watching it post-pandemic makes you question every life decision you've ever made, this is an episode you cannot miss. Dive in for big laughs, big nostalgia, big stupidity, and some of the most questionable hazmat protocols ever put to film.JOIN THE CONVERSATION  Does Outbreak hit different post-COVID? Should a monkey really be the hero of the third act? Was that helicopter chase the most unnecessary scene in '90s cinema?Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or BornToWatch.com.au#Outbreak1995 #BornToWatch #MoviePodcast #90sMovies #FilmReview #DustinHoffman #MorganFreeman #ViralThrillers #WolfgangPetersen #PopCulture

Elmore Leonard ‘did more with less than any crime writer I can think of' J. Robert Lennon wrote in the latest issue of the LRB. Leonard was born in New Orleans in 1925 and by the time he died in 2013 had published over forty novels selling tens of millions of copies, many of which were made into films such as Jackie Brown and Get Shorty. (A few have recently been reissued as Penguin Modern Classics.) He also wrote ten rules for writers that serve as a manifesto for the minimalist, dialogue-heavy style he mastered. In this episode Lennon joins Tom to discuss the usefulness of Leonard's rules and the ways in which great crime writing will always defy the prescriptions of its genre. Read J. The massive success of “Pulp Fiction” created an arms race for talky crime films. Producers flocked to the genre master himself, author Elmore Leonard. After decades of failed adaptations, Hollywood once again raided his bookshelves, and first up was 1995's “Get Shorty,” a film MGM wanted Quentin Tarantino to direct. Too busy adapting another Leonard bestseller (Rum Punch, which would become “Jackie Brown,”) Tarantino passed, but not before convincing John Travolta to star as loan shark turned film producer Chili Palmer. Andrew Fryer joins Dennis to revisit this industry comedy that suggests Hollywood may be tougher to navigate than organized crime. After all, sometimes you do your best work when you've got a gun to your head. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

"The writer has to have patience, the perseverance to just sit there alone and grind it out. And if that's not worth doing," Leonard said, "then he doesn't want to write." Leonard wanted to write from a young age, and write he did, first producing western stories and western novels before moving toward the crime novels that made his reputation. His is the career of a working writer the likes we don't see much of anymore. About COOLER THAN COOL, Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Barry writes that "If you love Elmore Leonard-and who doesn't?-you'll love this fascinating, richly detailed account of how one of our greatest storytellers lived his life and learned his craft."Over the course of his sixty-year career, Elmore Leonard published forty-five novels that had enduring appeal to readers around the world. Revered by other writers such as Martin Amis, Margaret Atwood, Raymond Carver, and Stephen King, his books were innovative in their blending of a Hemingway-inspired noirish minimalism and masterful use of dialogue over exposition-a direct evolution spurred by his years as a screenwriter. When C. M. Kushins was fifteen he worked up his courage and wrote a fan letter to Elmore and included one of his own short stories. Elmore proofread it and wrote an encouraging letter back. Years later, Kushins finally got a short story published and Elmore sent him a congratulatory note. When he first started thinking about writing this book, Kushins went nosing around the University of South Carolina archives-and found his own letters going back to when he was fifteen. Elmore had saved all their correspondence. It was this story that helped him get the Leonard family on board with the book. Indeed, the Leonard family has fully participated, contributing original interviews, additional personal correspondence, exclusive photographs, as well as access to Leonard's unfinished final novel. The biography also includes unpublished, loose memoir excerpts. These are included here for the first time to illuminate key passages of importance throughout Leonard's life in his own words.Leonard's fiction contained many layers, and at the heart of his work were progressive themes, stemming from his years as a student of the Jesuit religious order, his personal beliefs in social justice, and his successful battle over alcoholism. He drew inspiration from greats like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, but the true motivation and brilliance behind his crime writing was the ongoing class struggle to achieve the American Dream-often seen through the eyes of law enforcement officers and the criminals they vowed to apprehend.COOLER THAN COOL is not just a biography for fans of Leonard's fiction. His is work was also the source material for many movies including 3:10 to Yuma, Hombre, Jackie Brown, Get Shorty, Out of Sight-as well as the TV series Justified-and influenced American filmmaking, especially the western and crime genres.Definitive and revealing, COOLER THAN COOL shows Leonard emerging as one of the last writers of the "pulp fiction" era of midcentury America, to ultimately become one of the most successful storytellers of the twentieth century, whose influence continues to have far-reaching effects on both contemporary crime fiction and American filmmaking. One more thing: 2025 also marks Elmore Leonard's centennial. In September, Mariner Books will bring a never-published novella by the author, Picket Line, with an introduction by Kushins, timed to Leonard's October birthday.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Exactly one year after his historic comeback in the seminal Pulp Fiction (which he received an Oscar nomination for), John Travolta followed it up with this slick and crime caper/satire adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name.  Here he plays Chili Palmer, a mob enforcer from Miami who LOVES movies, is visiting Los Angeles for the first time, and finds himself very eager to get into the movie business.  Once there, he meets a schlock producer (Gene Hackman - RIP), a scream queen (Rene Russo), a pretentious movie star (Danny DeVito), and a menacing wanna-be producer (Delroy Lindo)....among several others.  And wouldn't you know it....Chili finds himself getting involved in the movie business. :) Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family, Men In Black), this would go on to be on of the more quotable and fondly remembered crime comedies of the '90's featuring a cast including several other legends including Bette Midler, the late great Dennis Farina, and the late, great James Gandolfini.  Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The unforeseen deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, shocked the world when their bodies were discovered in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26, 2025. Authorities responded to a welfare check requested by a maintenance worker who hadn't heard from the couple in weeks. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Hackman in the mudroom near his cane, as if he had fallen. Arakawa was located in the bathroom near a space heater, with an open prescription bottle and scattered pills on the countertop. One of their dogs was found deceased in a crate close to Arakawa, while two other dogs were found alive in different areas of the house. Friends and neighbors had noticed a decline in Hackman's health in the months leading up to his death. Once known for riding his bike around the neighborhood, he had become increasingly reclusive. At 95, his frailty had become apparent, and Arakawa, a 65-year-old classical pianist, had also retreated from public life. Authorities classified the deaths as "suspicious" due to the circumstances, but foul play was not suspected. Initial autopsy reports revealed no external trauma, and tests ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning. Data from Hackman's pacemaker suggested his heart had stopped on February 17, meaning they had been dead for about nine days before being found. Speculation surrounded the case, with some questioning whether it could have been a "companion suicide," but experts doubted this, given that the couple was found in separate parts of the house. The presence of prescription medication near Arakawa and Hackman's known heart condition led investigators to consider a medical event as the likely cause. The entertainment world responded with an outpouring of grief. John Travolta shared stories of Hackman's humor and brilliance on the set of Get Shorty, while Morgan Freeman honored him at the 2025 Oscars, calling him one of the most generous performers he'd ever worked with. Hackman's career spanned over four decades, earning him two Academy Awards for The French Connection and Unforgiven. His work in Bonnie and Clyde, The Conversation, and The Royal Tenenbaums cemented his status as one of Hollywood's most revered actors. Though he retired from acting in 2004, he remained active in writing and personal pursuits. The investigation into the exact circumstances of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's deaths continues. Their passing leaves behind a legacy of artistic contributions and a community mourning the loss of two lives lived largely outside the Hollywood spotlight. #GeneHackman #BetsyArakawa #HollywoodLegend #UnsolvedMystery Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
