Back in July of 2020, Malaysian comic, Nigel Ng, introduced all of us to the brand-new character, Uncle Roger. In that video, Nigel, dressed as “Uncle Roger” with his trademarked tucked-in Orange-polo, watches as a BBC rep brutalizes an egg-fried rice recipe, much to his own horror. This comedic reaction video would strike a chord with Asian people all over the world, not to mention take an aspiring comedian and flip his whole world upside down near overnight. You see, prior to the creation of that character, Nigel had been moonlighting as a stand-up comic while working as a data analyst during the day. And now -- he's got a viral video that's been viewed more than 20 Million times over on YouTube. Nigel Ng is a Malaysian stand up comedian and content creator. He started his career in the Chicago comedy clubs and is now based in London. In 2020, he went viral from his portrayal of Uncle Roger, a middle-aged Asian man reviewing an egg fried rice video. In 10 months, he has amassed 170 million views on his YouTube channel and a combined following of over 5 million across his social media platforms. As a standup, Nigel has been nominated for the Best Newcomer Award for his sold-out show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019, and sold out multiple runs throughout the UK and Europe. His TV credits include Comedy Central's Stand Up Central and Roast Battle, BBC Two's Mock The Week and ITV's Jonathan Ross Comedy Club. I sat down with Malaysian Sensation Nigel Ng, the winner of the Amused Moose 2016 Laugh Off, to talk about coming from Asia to the UK. Malaysia is a Commonwealth country but do they still have the Queen on everything and drive on the left? We talk about having 2 jobs, Crazy Rich Asians, how if he wants to be poor he'd be poor at home, being the only person studying Engineering and Philosophy at university and why instead of donating to charity you should just buy fake Nikes.
