Writer and tour guide Simon Tancred on the little-known ANZAC story of how a group of POWs made a daring escape on foot to neutral Switzerland.Simon Tancred fell in love with Italy as a young man, and set up a job for himself leading hikes and tours across the country, and into the Alps. So Simon was familiar with the old trails and passes that crisscross the mountains, and which have been used for hundreds of years by shepherds, traders and travellers. But one day, someone approached him with the unknown story of how a group of Australian prisoners of war from the Second World War escaped from Italy to freedom in neutral Switzerland.Four mates from Moree evaded the enemy by using these ancient, winding tracks. They didn't speak Italian, they battled wintry conditions, and never knew if the civilians they encountered along the way would help them or turn them over to the occupying German forces.Simon was so intrigued by this story, he bought some old maps and set out to follow their journey to freedom, by tracing their steps across the Alps. This episode of Conversations explores fascism, politics, war, civil war, prisoners of war, unknown stories of WWII, the Anzacs, Anzac Day 2025, Italy, Italian Alps, modern history, books, writing, walking tours in Italy, travel, Mountaineering, Partisans, Nazis, Nazi Germany, neutral Switzerland, World War Two history, religion, Madonna, Mary, Italian Catholicism, where to hike in Italy.Trails to Freedom is published by Hardie Grant.

Dr. Ursula Betka was one of my favourite lecturers and tutors during my 6 years at Melbourne University studying art history in the 1990's. Her area of specialisation, in which she has a Ph.D, focused on Medieval and Renaissance sacred images. On 3rd December, Ursula's beautiful new book, published by Hardie Grant, is coming out and I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy. Titled “Techniques of Painting and Gilding in Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Italy. Egg Tempera and Gold Leaf on Wood Panel”, this sumptuously illustrated, hard back book is a detailed technical manual on the time-honoured painting tradition of egg tempera, used historically for sacred images of the Madonna and Child. Ursula works in a range of historical materials and methods such as egg tempera painting and gilding on wood, parchment and glass, exploring ways in which these traditions and techniques might convey profound beauty and resonate meaning today. Ursula integrates her practice with the teaching and writing of art history by examining the function and context of sacred art objects and the ways in which artistic creation expresses the yearnings of the soul. The enduring symbolic values associated with pigments and colours, exotic decorative fabrics and various landscape and architectural settings is also explored. Ursula's book-launch coincides with an exhibition of works featured in the book. See the links below for details and where to buy Ursula's book. Hello, and welcome to another episode of the podcast. Very excited to bring you a behind-the-scenes interview today about cookbook public relations and publicity. Before we dive into the show, Traditional publishers get a bad rap in a lot of writing circles. I hear them described as profit-seeking enemies who are out to steal our ideas or, worse yet, our souls. I have loved all of my publishers. They were partners in helping me create beautiful books so that I could share my recipes and stories with the world. And the team of editors, designers, layout experts, printers, photographers, indexers, marketers, and distributors they paid was amazing too. With traditional publishing, we, as cookbook writers, provide the recipes and stories, and publishers work the book magic. We become a cookbook concept machine, writing and cranking out book concepts and manuscripts, and our publishers create the books. If you want to learn more about publishing in this way, where you get published without spending any of your own money to edit, design, print, or distribute the book, head over to www.cookbookwritersacademy.com/free to learn more. Today on the podcast, I'm excited to have an interview with Andrea Burnett. Andrea is the Founder of Andrea Burnett Lifestyle Public Relations. Andrea has been a lifestyle book publicist and publishing professional for over 25 years. She's worked for top-tier publishers, including Penguin Random House, Ten Speed, Chronicle Books, Quarto, Cameron, Abrams, Artisan, Page Street, Hardie Grant, and many others. Andrea specializes in lifestyle non-fiction books focusing on cookbooks, and has been fortunate enough to do PR for some notable award-winning culinary professionals, including many of the authors I have had here on the Cookbook Love Podcast. Food and cooking are a passion of Andrea's, so cookbooks are always a pleasure for her to promote. Today on the podcast, we talk about trends in traditional, self, and hybrid publishing, what it takes to get a book deal, specific things first-time authors can do to help their publicist, as well as the cost of hiring a publicist to help promote you and your book. Things We Mention In This Episode: How to Get Paid to Write a Cookbook training Andrea Burnett Public Relations Milk Street Cookbooks The Essential New York Times Cookbook

Welcome back to the Lecker Book Club. Every month I'll pick a newly released food related book and talk to the author about the process of writing it. I'll also be writing about it on Substack and Patreon. Join me there as well! This month: Ramen Forever by Tim Anderson. Ramen has ended up as a cornerstone of Tim Anderson's life. As he writes in the book, it was originally his love of ramen - as well as Japanese food more broadly - that took him to live in Japan, which steered the course of his future in many ways, including meeting his wife. Avid food TV watchers in the UK may also remember that ramen was at the heart of his Masterchef story; when he won the series in 20211, ramen was his winning main course in the final. He previously ran a ramen restaurant in Brixton, Nanban, which opened in 2015 and closed in 2021. But although he's got five cookbooks already to his name, he's never written a book entirely about ramen….until now. Ramen Forever is out now, published by Hardie Grant. To open the Wheeler Centre's 2023 Spring Fling series, six Australian cultural icons took to the stage at Melbourne Town Hall for an intimate evening of storytelling, reflecting on the moments that shaped them and called upon them to–go above and beyond in their careers, personal lives and creative endeavours. Hosted by Patricia Karvelas, the line-up of special guests included writer and disability activist Hannah Diviney, tennis champion Jelena Dokic, award-winning author Melissa Lucashenko, prominent campaigner for the Voice to Parliament Thomas Mayo, and Zimbabwean-Australian singer, actor and writer Rufaro Zimbudzi, followed by a very special musical performance by celebrated singer-songwriter Emma Donovan. The following reflection on the theme Above and Beyond was shared on Opening Night by proud Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man, Thomas Mayo. Thomas is the National Indigenous Officer of the MUA. He is a signatory of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and has been a leading advocate since its inception in May 2017. He is the Chairperson of the Northern Territory Indigenous Labor Network, advises the Diversity Council of Australia and the From the Heart campaign, and is an executive member of the Northern Territory Trades and Labour Council. In this special episode on The Voice to Parliament, I have the privilege of interviewing Yes campaigner and Director for Australians for Indigenous Constitutional Recognition, Thomas Mayo. Thomas is a Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man. He is the Assistant National Secretary of the MUA. Thomas is a signatory of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and has been a leading advocate since its inception in May 2017. He is the Chairperson of the Northern Territory Indigenous Labor Network and a director on the Australians for Indigenous Constitutional Recognition board. Thomas is the author of six books published by Hardie Grant and has many articles and essays published across the major media providers. His latest book is co-authored with well-respected journalist, Kerry O'Brien: The Voice to Parliament Handbook - All the details you need; published 17 May 2023. In this special episode I ask Thomas to answer the many questions arising from the proposal for the referendum for the Voice to Parliament. Some of these questions are legitimate. Sadly and frustratingly many are borne from a campaign of wilful disinformation. This means there is a lot of misinformation floating around and this episode is a chance to hear directly from one of the leaders of the YES campaign. I hope you find this episode valuable, however you ultimately decide to vote. And I ask you please – if you have found it valuable, please share it with someone else who you think it could be helpful to. I also echo Thomas' ask at the end of our interview; to reach out and speak to people about this important proposal. To listen to them with patience, curiosity and respect and if and when you hear some of this misinformation as part of their consideration process, share the truth. A healthy democracy depends on our citizens being well informed. Sometimes we need to get involved personally to protect our democracy. I believe this is one of those times. Highlights of this episode: Thomas shares his vision of the future if this referendum is successful He shares the lessons learned from the history of struggle of Indigenous people for recognition and justice and how that has shaped the path forward including the proposal for the Voice to Parliament We talk about the deliberate campaign of disinformation He explains the history and the comprehensive process leading up to this proposal today Thomas answers some of the legitimate questions arising from the proposal He also debunks the more mischievous claims and outright disinformation designed to confuse and manipulate Australians He invites Yes supporters to reach out and speak to others respectfully about the Voice proposal He shares his hopes for a future where as a nation we have turned a page and taken the colonial past of their shoulders Connect with Thomas Mayo on Linkedin Yes23 website Other links Uluru Statement from the Heart AEC Disinformation Register RMIT FactLab The Voice To Parliament Handbook by Thomas Mayo and Kerry O'Brien
Brendan Gale became CEO of Richmond in late 2009, and delivered this speech to the whole of the football club in the rooms in the old Punt Road grandstand in early 2010. it was a vision for the future, and it was mocked in the press at the time. Richmond had not won a final for 30 years and had competed in finals twice in the previous fifteen. Gale outlined a plan to win three premierships in ten years. It's an articulate corporate speech in a sporting environment with brave goal setting. I spoke to Brendan Gale as part of interview process for my Allan Jeans biography (Yabby, Hardie Grant, 2024) The transcript and audio reenactment of Gale's speech is on Speakola. Journalist and broadcaster Kerry O'Brien has a history in reporting on and observing the way in which Australia has treated its Indigenous communities. O'Brien is as supporter of enshrining an indigenous Voice to Parliament into Australia's Constitution and he outlines why in this conversation. A new book. The Voice to Parliament Handbook, has been published by Hardie Grant and both O'Brien and Indigenous author, Thomas Mayo, explain why they believe a Voice to Parliament is essential. Katie Caldesi Katie and her Italian husband Giancarlo first came to public attention when they featured in the BBC2 series Return to Tuscany in 2006. The series, which was broadcast worldwide, followed the pair as they set up and launched a residential cookery school in Tuscany. The show climaxed with them getting married in a dreamlike Tuscan wedding. Since then they have both been frequent visitors to our screens appearing as guests on an array of foodie programmes such as BBC1's Masterchef, Saturday Kitchen and Sunday Brunch. As business partners, they own the Caldesi Group of Restaurants and Cookery Schools with restaurants in London's Marylebone and culinary mecca Bray in Berkshire. Their cookery school ‘La Cucina Caldesi' was launched in Marylebone in 2005 and this year they celebrated 15 years of business at Caldesi in Campagna, their restaurant in Bray and 20 years in Caldesi in Marylebone. Katie started researching the low-carb diet when her husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and gluten-intolerance through nutritionist Jenny Phillips. She then became aware of the work of Dr David Unwin (the low-carb GP). Following advice from both Jenny and David, she began to develop low-carb dishes and soon the whole family had cut right back on the carbs. There were immediate benefits to this as the whole family had more energy, they all lost weight, Giorgio's headaches lessened and Flavio's skin improved. Giancarlo lost almost 4 stone in weight which led to his diabetes going into remission. Inspired by this Katie wrote her first of five low-carb cookbooks ‘The Diabetes Weight-Loss Cookbook' which included some of the recipes she had developed for the family, a section on why low-carb works with Jenny Phillips and a foreword by Dr David and Dr Jen Unwin. The book was serialised in the Daily Mail and became an Amazon bestseller which led to Katie writing another four low-carb cookbooks. Her latest cookbook ‘The Low-carb Italian' launches in March 2023. Her e-book ‘The Caldesi Low-carb Christmas' is available as an e-book or paperback and includes festive low-carb, gluten-free recipes that are a treat for all the family and ideal for entertaining too. Katie has also written 12 other cookbooks covering the food of Italy, the art of preserving food as well as a compendium of salad recipes from around the world. Pam's guest today is Dr. Jackie Bailey. Jackie' s new release, The Eulogy, was published last week by Hardie Grant. It's her debut release and it's a category referred to as autofiction, short for autobiographical fiction - fiction based heavily on fact. The protagonist of The Eulogy is Kathy Bradley who is in the process of writing a eulogy for her very much loved sibling, her sister Annie. It's a story about grief, family and loss, and so many other things which Pam and Jackie discuss in this episode. In addition to being an author, Jackie is an independent funeral director, an interfaith minister, and an arts consultant - all things which have informed the writing of The Eulogy. So grab a cup of warm up, keep warm, cause I'm sure that we are now in the midst of winter as you're listening to this and enjoy this chat with Dr. Jackie Bailey. Welcome to the latest Unmade podcast. Today's edition features the penultimate extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. In today's chapter, we reach 2020. It was shaping up to be a typical year for the media, with the Olympics set to boost ad spend, but media bosses complaining they were still having to scrap for every dollar. And then, on Friday 13 March, Covid upended everything. The Melbourne Grand Prix was cancelled and the shutdowns began.Cinema was hit first and hardest. Then out of home advertising. Bauer Media began to feel an extreme case of buyers remorse in its agreement to purchase Pacific Magazines. In television, Ten cut its on air talent while Seven and Nine negotiated their sports rights costs downwards. News Corp axed most of its community newspapers, with a devastating impact on local communities. There had never been a year like itIf you've been enjoying hearing the podcast, please do give it a five star rating on whichever podcasting app you use. Welcome to the latest Unmade podcast. Today's edition features another extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. In today's chapter, I examine the period when the negative impact on democracy of social media platforms becomes impossible to ignore. The Cambridge Analytics scandal demonstrates Facebook's carelessness with user data, while Brexit and the election of Donald Trump prove to be propelled by disinformation shared on the platform.Within the media industry, Facebook's encouragement of publishers to pivot to on-platform video proves to be based on untrue metrics, while the questionable credibility of influencers is brought into focus. Then comes a new low. A mob - driven on by Donald Trump on Twitter, QAnon conspiracy theorists, and a partisan Fox News, launches a coup attempt in Washington, trying to overturn the result of the US election. If you enjoy hearing the podcast, please do give it a five star rating on whichever podcasting app you use. Welcome to the latest Unmade podcast. Today's edition features another extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. In today's chapter, I explore the aftermath of the merger between Nine and Fairfax Media. The biggest loose end to tie up was what to to with the community newspapers division. Some of the country's most celebrated regional newspapers - the likes of The Canberra Times, The Newcastle Herald, Illawarra Mercury and Bendigo Advertiser - were about to get a new owner. It was an opportunity for Antony Catalano and business partner Alex Waislitz to pick up a bargain. And the duo had bigger ambitions for Australian Community Media - they wanted to be in television too. They made a move that scuppered Seven West Media's plans to take control of Prime through a cash-free, share-based merger.Nine had other things on its mind - taking full control of Macquarie Media, owner of Melbourne's 3AW and Sydney's 2GB, the home of controversial breakfast host Alan Jones. For Nine, it was also time to bring Karl Stefanovic home to Today, while CEO Hugh Marks was about to make an imperfect exit.If you enjoy hearing the podcast, please do give it a five star rating on whichever podcasting app you use. Welcome to the latest Unmade podcast. Today's edition features another extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. In today's chapter, I explore the dramatic evolution of News Corp in Australia and around the world during the last decade.I analyse the insights offered by News Corp Australia's executive chairman Michael Miller when I interviewed him on stage in 2018. It came at a point that the company was recognising that in television and in news, it was building subscription products for narrowly targeted, polarised audiences. That included Sky News Australia, which the company took full control of in 2016 and began moving towards opinionated, mostly right-leaning commentary under new boss Paul Whittaker.Globally, sister organisation 21st Century Fox failed in a 2014 bid to take over Time Warner with proprietor Rupert Murdoch later taking the decision to sell most of the company's assets to Disney instead. The aftermath of the 2019 Disney deal saw Lachlan Murdoch become the boss of the new Fox Corporation, parent company of cable giant Fox News in the US, setting him up as the likely successor to his father. That looked even more likely when James Murdoch walked out in 2020.If you enjoy hearing the podcast, please do give it a five star rating on whichever podcasting app you use. Welcome to the latest Unmade podcast. Today's edition features another extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. In today's chapter, I explore the ever worsening relationship cycle between the Coalition government and the ABC, as PM Scott Morrison and communications minister Paul Fletcher pursued regular confrontations, even after their pick of Ita Buttrose stepped up as chair. The chapter also recaps the extraordinary 2019 raid on the ABC by Federal Police in response to The Afghan Files revelations. And relations with the government got worse after Four Corners investigated the conduct of Coalition ministers - focusing on Christian Porter and Alan Tudge - in its “Inside the Canberra Bubble” episode. The pandemic saw politicians become increasingly aggressive in accusing ABC inquisitors of bias including an unedifying attack on News Breakfast presenter Michael Rowland from health minister Greg Hunt. But the ABC was not blameless. Even as Twitter trolls attacked its presenters, some of its staff struggled to remain impartial in their social media output. If you enjoy hearing the podcast, please do give it a five star rating on whichever podcasting app you use. A different style of episode we're calling 'Speakola Reads' On 4th March 2022, Shane Warne, Australia greatest ever bowler, died of a heart attack in Thailand. This episode is Tony reading a tribute he wrote for Shane Warne in 2011. The piece was titled 'The Mile Wide Spin Club' and was included in a coffee table book called 'Australia: Story of a Cricket Country' (Hardie Grant, 2011, ed. Chris Ryan). The book ranked the greatest players in Australia's cricket history, and the top 5 were each captured in a dedicated article. Tony spoke to junior coaches, cricket academy people, and Warne's teammate Damian Fleming to write this. The conclusion was updated to salute Warnie's early and tragic passing. Tony has a new website for the books he has written, including sports books 1989: The Great Grand Final, A Boy Called Bob, The Selwood Boys, and Australia United. Speakola has a Patreon page which you can join If you want to offer regular support for as little as $3/mth. We also welcome credit card donations, which can be monthly or one off. Subscribe to our newsletter if you want a fortnightly email setting out great speeches by theme. Episode supported by the Podcast Reader magazine. Issue #5 out now. She shares: + How agencies love freelancers with a specialist niche, and how it can set you up as the go-to person for that topic (and be lucrative) + Why there's less leeway with content marketing briefs than journalism briefs, and what you need to know about the strategy that's gone on behind the scenes of that brief + How you should never tell a content agency that you can write for digital if you don't have a website of your own + How to approach a content agency - do you simply send a letter of introduction, or pitch as well? + Why your career will die if you don't evolve, keep learning and stay curious, instead of focusing on how the industry is changing in ways you don't necessarily like + Her tips for immersing yourself in the world of content marketing so you're poised to approach agencies as they get new, interesting clients And much more! 'When you don't understand something that important about yourself, [diagnosis is] almost a kind of cheat code to go back and understand things that you've been through.' Each month we celebrate an Australian debut release of fiction or non-fiction in the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club. For August that debut is Late Bloomer: How an Autism Diagnosis Changed My Life by Clem Bastow, out now from Hardie Grant. Clem Bastow grew up feeling like she'd missed a key memo on human behaviour. She found the unspoken rules of social engagement confusing, arbitrary and often stressful. It wasn't until Clem was diagnosed as autistic, at age 36, that things clicked into focus. With wit and warmth, Clem reflects as an Autistic adult on her formative experiences as an undiagnosed young person, deconstructing the misconceptions and celebrating the realities of Autistic experience. First Book Club host Ellen Cregan spoke with Clem about the book and the experience of writing it at a live online event hosted by Yarra Libraries. Our theme song is Broke for Free's ‘Something Elated'. Sound production by Lloyd Pratt. Further reading: Read CB Mako's review of Late Bloomer in our August Books Roundup. Read about Clem's favourite books and reading habits in this month's Shelf Reflection. Clem wrote for KYD in 2015 about women screenwriters and 'the obligation to represent'. Late Bloomer is available now from your local independent bookseller. (more…)

Massimo Bottura once cried while eating Lennox Hastie's food at Firedoor. When the chef behind Osteria Francescana, named world's best restaurant in 2016, tears up while eating your steak, you must be doing something right. Perhaps that's why Lennox was compelled to smuggle his signature dry-aged meat all the way to Italy when he visited Bottura recently. Also on Team Firedoor: Pete Wells, who is probably the most important food critic in the world. The New York Times journalist's write-up of the Surry Hills restaurant was so favourable that Lennox ended up on the front cover of the newspaper. Firedoor is remarkable for its focus on smoke, burn and char. It relies on a fascinating mix of woods to fuel its kitchen – from ironbark to apple and even wine oak barrels. Every aspect of the menu, even the dessert, is touched by fire. Lennox learnt a lot about cooking with raw flames when he was at the grill-focused Asador Etxebarri in rural Spain. He dropped by for a day and ended up staying for five years. He worked with chef Victor Arguinzoniz on many fire-fuelled experiments – they even grilled caviar. Also: there were steaks that came from 21-year-old cows. And even though Etxebarri was a Michelin-starred establishment (and currently rated the sixth best restaurant in the world), Lennox basically lived in a ruin on the site. “Sheep used to walk in the back door to keep warm in the winter.” He also talks about how fire is at the heart of every culture, and can be a tricky medium to master (even the wood literally takes years to be ready to burn; and of course, we totally nerd out about Firedoor's fuel source, especially indigenous ironbark, which burns 400C hotter than the European woods that Lennox dealt with in Spain). Gas has only been around for a few centuries, but we've been cooking with fire since the beginning of time – yet there's still a lot to learn and it's fascinating to hear about Lennox's experiments and insights on trying to tame flames. (The heat also means he's had a few heart attacks when the fire alarm goes off – but on the upside, a recent incident led to a refurbishment of the restaurant, complete with new hearth.) We also chat about how he comes up with vegetarian dishes – given Firedoor is famous for a steak that's aged for around 200 days – and his favourite places to eat and drink in Sydney. PS Firedoor fans should keep an eye out for Lennox's upcoming book, Finding Fire, which is published by Hardie Grant in November.
