Farmers are too afraid to use a government system that was set-up to improve their relationship with the supermarkets, according to a new investigation by BBC One's Countryfile. All week we've been looking at the egg industry. Yesterday we heard about pullets, the young female chicks that grow into laying hens. But for every egg that hatches a female chick, there's another that hatches male, and cockerels can't lay eggs, which obviously renders them useless for egg producers. In the UK these chicks are gassed at one day old, but in Europe techniques are being used to sex the chicks before they're hatched, whilst still in the egg.St Agnes is the most southerly of the Isles of Scilly. It's home to the Hicks family and their very small herd of dairy cows. The herd provides milk for the island's residents, around 80 people, and summer ice cream for the tourists. For this Sunday's edition of our sister programme On Your Farm Sarah Swadling went to meet them.Presented by Anna Jones and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

#204: Organic grain farmer Anna Jones-Crabtree shares an emotional glimpse into the real and challenging issues she and her husband Doug face as they try to align their nature-first stewardship practices with the reality of operating in an economic system that favors extractive agriculture. Anna spoke this past September at our Churchtown Dairy event in Hudson, New York,  Real Organic: A World Movement. Anna Jones-Crabtree and her husband Doug own and operate Vilicus Farms in northern Montana where they manage thousands of acres of mixed grains and lentils alongside beneficial plantings for pollinators and other wildlife. She holds a masters degree in engineering and served as the Lead of Sustainable Operations for the National Forest Service. https://vilicusfarms.com/To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://realorganicproject.org/anna-jones-crabtree-at-churchtown-2024-farming-with-natureThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

What do you want it to do for them, this goes much deeper than the features and the benefits of the products.  In this week's episode of Start Scale Succeed I chat with Anna about how you can be more visible in your brand and some of the areas to understand before you do that.  Some of the topics we chat about are  Building brand recognition  Prioritizing direct customer interactions Effective use of social media and email marketing for improved visibility and engagement. Creating a strategic marketing plan  Developing a mission and vision that truly reflect your "why" and value proposition. Simon's recent love affair with miso continues…. This time with a really simple but super delicious Miso, lime and sweet potato bake. It's super easy - there's only about a half dozen ingredients that you need and a few that are just a little out of the ordinary (lemongrass, Thai basil, limes) but really, nothing hard to find at all. The flavours though are absolutely spot on – it's a ‘gratin with attitude' as Anna Jones puts it and it is absolutely fantastic with beautiful bbq chicken or Yumi's INFAMOUS vegetarian converter chicken wings. Start by making a saucePut a 400 ml tin of coconut milk in a blender with 100g cherry tomatoes and roughly chopped - 1 green chilli, a large thumb-sized piece of ginger, 3 garlic cloves, 2 lemongrass stalks and 2 tablespoons white miso paste. Blitz on high until you have a smooth, fragrant sauce. Prep your Sweet Potatoes and BAKEPreheat the oven to 180C. Slice 750g sweet potatoes (4 small/2 large) about ½ cm thick - by hand or MANDOLINE (!). Season with sea salt and layer into a 28cm oiled baking dish (about A4-sized). Layer them in overlapping rows. Pour over the sauce, cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes until the top is browned and the potatoes are cooked through. Take off the foil and bake for another 15 mins. Final finishGrate over the zest of 1 unwaxed lime. Scatter over the leaves of a small bunch of basil (Thai best but normal fine) and bake for a final 5 mins. Serve with 2 limes for squeezing over. She has fostered a national sustainable operations effort for the US Forest Service serving as the first Regional Sustainable Operations Coordinator and as the National Sustainable Operations Director. She lives and farms in Havre, MT at Vilicus Farms with her husband, Doug. Dave Chapman owns and operates Long Wind Farm in East Thetford, VT, which concentrates on soil-grown glasshouse tomatoes that are produced year round. Dave and ellow Vermont tomato farmer Davey Miskell noticed the suspicious appearance of  hydroponic tomatoes from other countries being sold with the USDA organic sticker several years ago. Their research led to a web of injustices affecting real organic farmers, including berry growers, dairy producers,  grain farmers and more. The Real Organic Project was founded in 2017 and has evolved into an add-on food label. It is a100% farmer-led organization. To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://realorganicproject.org/anna-jones-crabtree-dave-chapman-al-gore-episode-one-hundred-sixty-oneThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/The Real Organic Project Certification deadline for 2024 is 04/15/2024. Anna Jones paddleboards the rocky coastline of Pembrokeshire, listening to the mysterious growling sounds of the sea caves. As the tide rises, water sloshes into holes in the rock and squeezes out puffs of air - or could it, maybe, be a dragon? Paddling in and out of the caves and coves, Anna and local instructor Libby Chivers allow their imaginations to run wild, picturing dragons and sea monsters deep in the darkness. It's easy to get carried away - literally - on an inflatable paddleboard, so Libby shares her top tips for staying safe on the sea. With Stand-Up Paddleboarding becoming ever more popular with water sports amateurs like Anna, rescues are on the rise. Libby shares her story of pulling a panic-stricken girl from the water and explains how lifeguards helped thirty paddleboarders back to the shore in a single day on one Welsh beach. Swept up by the atmosphere of the sea caves, Anna dries off and heads into Fishguard to learn more about the town's legends and folklore. Amid mysterious tales of pirates, smugglers and mermaids, there's the real-life story of the last invasion of Britain - when French soldiers landed at Fishguard in 1797. Local historian Edward Perkins shares the amazing story of Welsh heroine Jemima Nicholas, who fended them off armed only with a pitchfork. Presented and produced by Anna Jones

An 18-year-old student was killed after a 47-year-old college professor allegedly shot into a parked car. The Carrollton Police Department reported that on Saturday, July 30, at 12:27 a.m., officers were called to Tanner Medical Center because a female was suffering from a gunshot wound. Anna Jones, 18, died from her injuries, according to police. According to detectives, Richard Sigman was in Adamson Square when he got into a verbal altercation with another man. Sigman allegedly threatened the man with a gun. After noticing Sigman had a gun, the guard told him to leave. Sigman allegedly shot at a parked car in which Jones was sitting as he walked towards the parking deck. It is reported that Jones' friends drove her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Sigman is charged with murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and three counts of possession of a firearm during commission or attempt to commit certain felonies, according to Carroll County Jail records.
