Editors - Franky Guttman and Ali Greer ACE While BARRY editors Franky Guttman and Ali Greer ACE worked independently on their own episodes of the series (the finale being the lone exception), the pair worked closely with one another and Bill Hader to review and refine each episode.  This was a process the two not only enjoyed, but credit for helping the show to maintain its high quality throughout. BARRY follows Barry Berkman, a U.S. Marine and Afghanistan veteran from Cleveland, who works as a hitman and wrestles with loneliness, depression, and guilt caused by his lifestyle as well as his actions during his service. He travels to Los Angeles to kill a target and finds a new sense of purpose when he follows his target into an acting class. After joining the class and making plans to become an actor, using his newfound passion as an outlet for his anxiety, he struggles to distance himself from his old life and keep his past a secret from new friends and colleagues. FRANKY GUTTMAN Having joined the series in Season One as an assistant editor, working closely with editor Jeff Buchanan, Guttman laid his cards on the table with showrunners Alec Berg and Bill Hader after Season Two, declaring his desire to take on lead editorial duties for the show.  The gambit not only worked, but resulted in an ACE Eddie and HPA award nomination for his work on that season's sixth episode (710N).  In addition to his work on BARRY, Franky is also known for Swarm (2023) and Kidding (2018). ALI GREER ACE Aside from her Emmy® win in 2021 for her work on BARRY in Season Three, Ali was twice nominated for an ACE Eddie award for her work on the series, Portlandia.  Ali also received an Eddie nom for the same episode of BARRY which brought her the Emmy®.  In fact, Ali's editorial career is highlighted by several standout series in the comedy genre.  Ali's time as an assistant editor was punctuated with stints on Kroll Show (2015) as well as the aforementioned Portlandia (2015).  From there she went on to edit such shows as Dream Corp LLC (2018), Black Monday (2020), Schmigadoon! (2021) and Hacks (2021), for which she received her first Emmy® nomination. Editing Barry In our discussion with the BARRY editing team of Franky Guttman and Ali Greer ACE, we talk about: Giving the audience "2+2" instead of giving them "4" Being an editor at night and the "king security guard" by day Bringing an improv mentality into the cutting room The incomparable sweatiness of Fred Armisen How to make sure both editors tell the same story The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Check out the free trial of Media Composer | Ultimate Hear from Ali Greer ACE and the rest of the editing team from Hacks Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Happy Wine Wednesday! We're back with another installment in our Boozy Beginnings series.  Candi joined me this week to talk about the pilot episode of the HBO series Barry. We kick off our discussion by talking about the opening scene in which we meet Barry who looks like he is struggling to feel satisfied in his career as an assassin.  We also talk about how the writers very efficiently acquainted us with him via some well done exposition from Fuches.  Barry is the show's namesake and undoubtedly the main character, but the interesting cast of characters is absolutely part of the charm of this series.  In light of that, I ask Candi a few questions for sh*ts and giggles - including her thoughts about NoHo Hank.  We love him! After a few Barry-inspired questions, we share what worked well in the pilot and whether there was anything that didn't work for us.  If you're new to Barry, we try to further entice you to watch by sharing three words to describe the series.  Have no fear, our discussion is spoiler free - nothing beyond the pilot episode. As always, we end with our thirsty thoughts.  It's a Barry episode, so of course we swoon over Bill Hader.Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time.  Find and follow Candi on Twitter here. Thank you so much for listening!  Support the showFollow the pod on IG and Twitter. A Conversation with Alec Berg

AUSTIN FILM FESTIVAL'S ON STORY PODCAST

This week on On Story, AFF Moderator Harrison Glaser sits down with television writing legend Alec Berg for an in-depth conversation on his triumphant comedy writing career. Nothing short of a comedic genius, Berg's writing credits include some of television's most hilarious series, including his work writing, directing, and producing Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm, Mike Judge's Silicon Valley, and most recently, HBO's Barry, which he co-created with SNL legend Bill Hader. Barry, which was recently renewed for a fourth season, is an Emmy-nominated dark comedy hit that follows down-and-out hitman Barry Berkman, played by Bill Hader. Barry's assignments bring him to Los Angeles, where he finds himself joining a local acting class for wannabe talent taught by Gene Cousineau, played by none other than Henry Winkler. Through this class and a budding relationship with aspiring actress Sally Reed, this not-so-cold-blooded killer finds himself amidst an existential crisis, asking as we all often do, what is it he really wants out of life? Only Berg, a master of situational comedy, would think to put a hitman in a beginner's acting class and to make it lighthearted and funny, but as many of our listeners know, there's nothing lighthearted or easy about breaking into the world of comedy. Berg breaks down for our AFF audience his journey, which started by gaining inspiration from the tapes of prior comedy legends like Steve Martin, to his early work writing for Seinfeld, to expanding his credit from writer to writer-director, to ultimately making a career and name for himself as one of television's leading comedy creators and showrunners. So get ready for a lesson in laughter from comedy legend Alec Berg. Clips of Barry and Silicon Valley courtesy of Home Box Office, Inc. Clips of Seinfeld courtesy of NBC.

We're back for Season Two of BARRY! Barry Berkman thought he'd be on easy street after Detective Janice Moss was out of the picture, but his lack of basic human empathy gave him a blind spot for predicting Gene's grief. Barry saves the acting class from cancellation, but loses another piece of his soul in the process, like a mediocre horcrux. This week we talk Hank's startup decor, mannequin butts, and...taint rot(!?). Remember to ask your doctor if Ronnie Proxin is right for you! Most Evil Guy is a fancast about the show BARRY on HBO, co-created by Bill Hader and Alec Berg. Each episode of the podcast covers one episode of the show. The song, which was also remixed with country star Billy Ray Cyrus, has country themes, vibes, and sounds country, but Billboard booted it off their country charts. Still, Lil Nas X, Cyrus, and a big swath of the country love the song regardless of its genre and can’t stop lip-singing to it on social media. Today, The Nose hops on the “Old Town Road”. After 15 years of trying divorce cases in the courts, Barry Berkman had come to realize that ‘nobody ever won a divorce case.’ Litigation comes with a high price tag in the form of expense and the toxic effect on everyone involved, especially the children. So he started looking for a better way. At a mediation training in California in the mid-1990’s, Barry was inspired by stories of matrimonial lawyers using the collaborative process who hadn’t been to court in years. He returned to New York and started the state’s first collaborative practice. Today, Barry is a founding partner at Berkman Bottger Newman & Rodd, where he continues to specialize in matrimonial law and mediation. Barry teaches mediation at the Center for Mediation in Law, and he has been named among the Best Lawyers in America for eight years running. On this episode of Divorce Dialogues, Barry joins Katherine to explain his role in bringing collaborative divorce to New York. He shares the advantages of collaborative law over mediation as well as the traditional litigation model. Barry speaks to the necessary shift in thinking for couples pursuing the collaborative process, discussing the role the lawyer plays in modeling a spirit of cooperation.
