After Suits became a surprise streaming hit a couple of years back, of course NBCUniversal couldn't resist going back to the well, and that's how we got the spinoff Suits LA. Is it facing contempt charges? Kari Race returns to talk about it. Around The Dial takes us through The Baldwins, Ladies & Gentlemen...50 Years Of SNL Music, Dear Child, America Undercover and A Thousand Blows. Kari makes the case for inducting an episode of Kroll Show into The Canon. Then, after naming the week's Winner and Loser, it's on to a Game Time that could spell doom for some. Jenny Slate has never been a traditional stand-up comic. And after a lengthy hiatus that followed her 2019 Netflix special ‘Stage Fright' and included both a global pandemic and the birth of her daughter, she wasn't sure she'd ever get up in front of an audience again. “I didn't have a system in place for how to get back up on stage. I didn't know how to do that,” she says in this episode. But now, as she puts out her latest hour ‘Seasoned Professional', Slate breaks down how she made her way back in front of the mic and why she decided to get so intimately personal in the special. Slate reflects on how her one unfortunate season as a ‘Saturday Night Live' cast member has informed the rest of her career, from finding the right kind of community on projects like ‘Kroll Show' and ‘Bob's Burgers' to learning how to make her own unlikely success with ‘Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.' And she discusses what it was like to pass the torch of her mixed race character on ‘Big Mouth' to Ayo Edebiri, why she's not sure ‘Obvious Child,' her comedy film about abortion, would hit viewers in the same way 10 years later, and a lot more. This episode was originally published on February 21, 2024.Buy Jenny Slate's new book of essays ‘Lifeform'Follow Jenny Slate on Instagram @jennyslateFollow Matt Wilstein on Threads @mattwilsteinFollow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpod and Threads @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. The episode you've been waiting for is here. Comedy genius and nice dude Nick Kroll blesses the Fartvan! The Jons get down to the REAL RED MEAT of LA: The Sunset Strip. The only Zankou, Guitar Center, and whatever is now where Meltdown Comics once lived. Nick dishes with the Jons on his favorite drive, and then the Jons take him there and they drive the drive! Hell yeah! Frequent Kroll collaborator Jon D vibes with Nick on Kroll Show and skin care, and Frequent Kroll friend Tall Jon navigates an Arby's drive-thru like a Tall Kyle Busch, buying Nick and Jon D Mochocka shakes (sp?) that they sip till nothing's left, which is the sole direction turned on this podcast!

Nick Kroll is a comedian, actor and writer. Nick starred on the FX show The League, created the sketch comedy series Kroll Show. And if you watched VH1 in the early 2000s, you probably saw him making jokes about pop culture on Best Week Ever. But lately, Nick's focused more on the animation world. In 2017, he co-created the show Big Mouth on Netflix. It was an instant hit. And last year, Nick launched a new show in the same universe called Human Resources. The show centers around those same monsters from Big Mouth. But, it takes a look at their workplaces, along with the adult feelings they represent. Its second season just hit Netflix. Nick Kroll joined us to talk about his work on Big Mouth and Human Resources. Plus, why he's traded in his on-screen roles for voice acting gigs and a seat behind the scenes. He also gets into the lessons he's learned since becoming a father.
Editors - Franky Guttman and Ali Greer ACE While BARRY editors Franky Guttman and Ali Greer ACE worked independently on their own episodes of the series (the finale being the lone exception), the pair worked closely with one another and Bill Hader to review and refine each episode. This was a process the two not only enjoyed, but credit for helping the show to maintain its high quality throughout. BARRY follows Barry Berkman, a U.S. Marine and Afghanistan veteran from Cleveland, who works as a hitman and wrestles with loneliness, depression, and guilt caused by his lifestyle as well as his actions during his service. He travels to Los Angeles to kill a target and finds a new sense of purpose when he follows his target into an acting class. After joining the class and making plans to become an actor, using his newfound passion as an outlet for his anxiety, he struggles to distance himself from his old life and keep his past a secret from new friends and colleagues. FRANKY GUTTMAN Having joined the series in Season One as an assistant editor, working closely with editor Jeff Buchanan, Guttman laid his cards on the table with showrunners Alec Berg and Bill Hader after Season Two, declaring his desire to take on lead editorial duties for the show. The gambit not only worked, but resulted in an ACE Eddie and HPA award nomination for his work on that season's sixth episode (710N). In addition to his work on BARRY, Franky is also known for Swarm (2023) and Kidding (2018). ALI GREER ACE Aside from her Emmy® win in 2021 for her work on BARRY in Season Three, Ali was twice nominated for an ACE Eddie award for her work on the series, Portlandia. Ali also received an Eddie nom for the same episode of BARRY which brought her the Emmy®. In fact, Ali's editorial career is highlighted by several standout series in the comedy genre. Ali's time as an assistant editor was punctuated with stints on Kroll Show (2015) as well as the aforementioned Portlandia (2015). From there she went on to edit such shows as Dream Corp LLC (2018), Black Monday (2020), Schmigadoon! (2021) and Hacks (2021), for which she received her first Emmy® nomination. Editing Barry In our discussion with the BARRY editing team of Franky Guttman and Ali Greer ACE, we talk about: Giving the audience "2+2" instead of giving them "4" Being an editor at night and the "king security guard" by day Bringing an improv mentality into the cutting room The incomparable sweatiness of Fred Armisen How to make sure both editors tell the same story The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Check out the free trial of Media Composer | Ultimate Hear from Ali Greer ACE and the rest of the editing team from Hacks Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Gabe Liedman got his start doing stand-up. Because people were familiar with his voice, he started getting writing jobs on shows like Inside Amy Schumer, Kroll Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, PEN15, Broad City, and Big Mouth. In this interview, Gabe talks about branding yourself with sexuality, not being fearful about your comedy, how TV shows misrepresent the writers room, why movements are stretched in network television, and how there's freedom in “hand-crafted projects.” Subscribe for video interviews on YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/CreativePrinciples?sub_confirmation=1 If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? For the first chapter of his career, Nick Kroll's comedy centered around big, outsized characters – the more preposterous the better. He created the sketch comedy series Kroll Show, and he starred on the FX show The League. These days he's behind the camera a lot more. In 2017, he co-created the animated show Big Mouth on Netflix. Now he's got a new show in the same universe: Human Resources. It centers around a group of personified emotion monsters and their workplace, and the feelings they represent. Nick Kroll joins us to talk about developing Big Mouth and Human Resources. Plus, why he's taken fewer on-screen roles lately for voice acting gigs and a seat behind the scenes instead. He'll also talk about the lessons he's learned since he became a father.
