Joining me on the last episode of series 10 of The English Wine Diaries is wine expert and presenter, Tom Surgey. Tom was just 14 when his career in hospitality started, peeling carrots and potatoes in a Sussex pub after school. At the tender age of 20, he found himself working at The Ivy in London, where a hero called Sancho taught him the basics of wine and his passion for the drink really grew. He took his WSET qualifications and, hooked on wine, left the restaurant side of the industry in 2014 to join Ridgeview, where he spent six years working alongside renowned pioneers of high-quality English wine-making, the Roberts family. During his time at Ridgeview, Tom was invited to join the official line-up of Three Wine Men – joining Oz Clarke, Olly Smith and Tim Atkin with his unique style of wine presentation. As a freelance wine communicator and consultant, he works with a broad range of premium wine businesses, is a regular on BBC Sussex & Surrey Radio and often shares his expert drinks tips with star guests on ITV's Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh. Set for release later this summer, Tom's debut book, How to Drink Wine, promises to be a charismatic guide to teach you everything you need to know to enjoy this tremendous tipple. During this episode, which is brought to you in partnership with Plumpton College Wine Division, we talk about those early days at The Club at The Ivy, how he joined the Three Wine Men line-up and - having grown up and still living in Sussex – his true thoughts on the Sussex PDO. Follow Tom @tomsurgey on instagram and pre-order his book, How to Drink Wine, published on August 29, at geni.us/howtodrinkwine. For many of us, everyday tasks such as entering our PIN numbers, not exceeding the speed limit, food shopping or telling the time we take for granted. However, for individuals living with dyscalculia, these seemingly simple numerical activities can pose significant, and often debilitating, challenges. Dyscalculia affects 6-10% of the population (around 4 million people), the same proportion as dyslexia, but unlike dyslexia, most people haven't heard of it. Dyscalculia is a little-known, much misunderstood and under-researched learning difficulty. Today, Peter Cherry joins us to give us an insight into what it's like ‘Living with Dyscalculia' along with Cat Eadle, co-founder of the Dyscalculia Network. Peter and Cat give us a great overview of dyscalculia and cover topics including: What is dyscalculia? The daily challenges faced when living with dyscalculia Plans to extend Maths education to 18 March 2022 was the first time it has been discussed in parliament The difficulties finding employment without a Maths GCSE Lack of awareness, support and understanding in schools and the workplace Practical tips and strategies Listen to this insightful discussion to learn about dyscalculia and help to ensure that those impacted by this learning difficulty receive the support, adjustments and respect they deserve. New episodes will still be going live over the Summer holiday so hopefully you'll have some time to sit back and relax in the sunshine listening to more fantastic guests! Have a great Summer break! About Peter Cherry Peter Cherry is a passionate volunteer for the Dyscalculia Network, where he serves as Chair of the Adults with Dyscalculia Advisory Board. His drive to raise awareness and advocate for dyscalculia has led him to write about his experiences in letters to the Guardian, in an article for Frame Magazine, and to be interviewed for pieces on dyscalculia in BBC News, BBC Sussex and the i Paper. He has ambitions to write a book on dyscalculia. Peter works as Assistant Director at the British Institute at Ankara, is author of an academic book published by Bloomsbury and holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from University of Edinburgh. About Cat Eadle Cat Eadle is the co-founder of The Dyscalculia Network C.I.C and co-author, along with Prof. Steve Chinn, of the innovative 'Succeed with Dyscalculia' series of books. With a career spanning 29 years in education, Cat's unwavering dedication for supporting individuals with dyscalculia and maths difficulties underscores her extensive experience. Holding a Bachelor of Education from Oxford University, Cat then became a certified specialist in mathematics learning difficulties in 2003. She initially applied her expertise in school settings but in 2017, she established 'The Little Maths Room,' where she offers tutoring services to learners of all ages with dyscalculia and other Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs). Cat is passionately committed to helping learners to build solid mathematical foundations and has a unique ability to nurture confidence and competence in mathematics ensuring learning is both accessible and enjoyable. Cat now spends much of her time co-running and co-developing the Dyscalculia Network including planning Dyscalculia Day and co-organising the Dyscalculia Show at the NEC, Birmingham. Cat provides training sessions for educators and also provides CPD for workplaces and community organisations. She often consults with the Dyscalculia Network's Adults with Dyscalculia Advisory Board to ensure that the voices and experiences of those with dyscalculia are heard. There are some names in the radio industry that need no introduction. Shaun Tilley could be one of them, but I'm duty-bound to do one anyway. You know Shaun, of course you do. He's been on the radio in Wales, Scotland and England. And although he's already racked up four decades on the wireless, you wouldn't bet against him appearing on the Northern Irish airwaves before long! In this chat with Foxy, he talks about his time at Radio Luxembourg, Capital, Radio City, Radio Clyde and more. There's some industry legends names dropped (spoiler alert: Kenny Everett). And there's a story about a nightclub in Glasgow called Bonkers. Contains some fruity language and one or two tales not suitable for younger ears. It's not just on the pitch Albion have made an impressive start to the season, as records are tumbling for the club's commercial, retail and catering teams. BBC Sussex's Johnny Cantor chats to Albion chief-executive & deputy chairman Paul Barber about the club's progress off the pitch.
This was the question that I was asked on BBC Sussex last week and it sparked a whole load of messages from people who were curious to understand more. It's a big question and one that I explore a little deeper here with you - I wonder if it will prompt any thoughts with you? I answer the first question: Why is it taking a global pandemic for people to think about changing their lives? Then go on to discuss: Isn't it just best to wait? And finally, why it's hard to take that first step Amie xx Join the Even Better Community and get thought prompts during the week to support your even better life.https://facebook.com/groups/evenbettercommunity --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/amiecrewscoach/message

Being single, childless, navigating online dating, face yoga, threesomes, fear of another recession, losing parents and dealing with grief alone – we go everywhere and believe it or not, manage to laugh our way through a chunk of it! So This episode comes off the back of one of your suggestions earlier in the year about living an alternative life, not getting married or having children – so I invited an old friend and colleague of mine, journalist Bibi Lynch on as she regularly writes about this in magazines and newspapers …. We actually cover a huge amount of ground, she talks about how the recession in 2008 wrecked her life, the early loss of parents, how she’s not had the chance to have children, she's had abusive neighbours, a real 10 year slog …and then the pandemic hits and how you deal with all these things when you’re on your own – we talk a lot about being single and how society still doesn’t make space for the 25% of women who will never have children, we talk about online dating, face yoga, we talk about the concerns of what life is going to look on the other side of all this and we somehow find ourselves talking about sex and threesomes too … Journalist Bibi Lynch has been called one of the funniest women on twitter, she’s often controversial and never fails to make you think. We first met when working together at BBC London Radio just over 10 years ago, she currently hosts 2 radio shows, one for Soho Radio and the other for BBC Sussex, she also hosts a podcast called Good Sex Bad Sex, she writes for the likes of The Telegraph, The Guardian and Stella, over the years has been columnist to various magazines such as Marie Claire and Elle, she’s co-wrote various TV shows, hosts monthly panels at The Groucho Club – she’s unstoppable! The importance of being kind to each other isn’t just a notion, it’s a necessity – we don’t know what is going on in each other’s lives, we don’t know what wounds are being carried or battles are being played out I think we’ve seen with the “black lives matter” movement, even with “me too” a couple of years ago, that it’s easy to turn and look the other way when we feel uncomfortable or that we don’t understand but I really hope that we are learning that when we do that, we increase the pain being suffered and if we can be brave enough to allow one another’s pain to come into the light, it might just get the chance to heal so that they can move on One of the things that I really hope for our new normal, is that we begin to make way for each other more, where we become better at listening, where we become more open to hear and slower to judge. "Running a cathedral is a very expensive business" according to Guildford Cathedral. The Association of English Cathedrals is celebrating 2020 as the "Year of Cathedrals" with many events across the country. The Church of England says 42 of its Cathedrals reported nearly ten million visitors in 2018, an increase of over 10 per cent on the previous year. But all cathedrals have to find funds for the daily upkeep of the buildings. In Guildford the Cathedral is trying to sell off some of its land for development. Roger Stamp made this report for the BBC Sussex & Surrey Sunday Breakfast Show.

Danny Mills might not look like he is enjoying himself most of the time, but he is. He certainly enjoys being a football pundit, and not sitting on the fence! He certainly doesn't in our interview as he talks massive egos, a boss he wasn't fond of, and travelling with difficult people. Also, Crook tells us his anxiety about holding on to a huge exclusive in order to release at just the right moment, Sam updates us on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Michelle is pretty concerned about parking at Brentford!
