Can Falk shut down the villains who are copying his radio show? Is it a warning of horrible events to come or a plot to bring about horrible events? How does it hold up against nitroglycerin? What ends a story more subtly than an explosion? This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. Falk doesn't seem to realize the music used for his show is in public domain. He couldn't sue anyone else who wanted to use it.2. In our world, the US agreed in a 1977 treaty to gradually give control of the canal to the nation of Panama, planning the handoff to be complete in 1999.3. Kids These Days might not be aware that until the end of the Twentieth Century, every American city and town and village had a directory called a “phone book” which was distributed to the public and which doxxed everyone who had a phone, listing their phone number and address. You could pay the phone company to be "unlisted," to exclude your name, number or address from the phone book. This was not considered a bribe or extortion because people had not yet reached a consensus that too many people had been stalked or killed over the decades. The introduction of cell phones seems to have changed that paradigm. I hope.Credits:The opening and transitional music clips were from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Episode-2599 - In this episode, Vinnie Tortorich and Chris Shaffer delve into the controversial topic of sunscreen, challenging conventional wisdom about sunscreen while exploring some alternatives to sun protection and protective clothing options. https://vinnietortorich.com/2025/01/alternatives-to-chemical-sun-protection-episode-2599 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES ON YOUTUBE - Alternatives to Chemical Sun Protection Vinnie expresses concerns about sunscreen chemicals and their potential health effects. Chris Shaffer joined the discussion, bringing research insights about sunscreen ingredients and their impact on humans and the environment. (00:04:00) Vinnie discussed his long-standing concerns about chemical sunscreens, particularly oxybenzone and avobenzone. Chris provided research findings about these chemicals' effects on coral reefs and human health, recommending zinc oxide as a safer alternative. (00:09:00) Many of the chemicals in some sunscreens are hormone disruptors. (00:10:00) Aerosol versions of sunscreens are even more concern. (00:14:00) Mineral sunscreens such as zinc oxide can be good, but titanium dioxide can be a concern. (00:15:00) Titanium dioxide is used in food and other products to brighten and whiten the product. Even in small particles, titanium dioxide can cause cancers. (00:17:00) Zinc oxide is the best bet. When do you need to apply sunscreen? (00:21:50) Reapply every couple of hours, at least. Chris presented research showing that dietary factors like beta carotene, lycopene, and vitamins C and E can enhance skin protection from UV damage. Vinnie shared anecdotal evidence about dietary changes affecting sunburn susceptibility. (00:23:41) They discussed various clothing brands and products that offer UV protection, including Tilley hats, Coolibar shirts, and ExOfficio clothing. On November 2, 1984, fifty-two-year-old Velma Barfield was executed by lethal injection at North Carolina's Central Prison, bringing an end to years of legal appeals and emotional debates over the death penalty and how, when, and to whom it gets applied. For six years, Barfield had sat on death row following her conviction for the poisoning murder of her boyfriend Stewart Taylor in 1976; however, during her trial she confessed to killing at least four other people.Velma Barfield's trial came at a time in the United States when Americans were just beginning to grapple with the concept of a serial killer, and the idea that a woman could commit such heinous acts seemed entirely inconceivable. Although woman had been sentenced to death for murder before in the US, none had confessed to methodically killing multiple people in such a callous way and for such a trivial reason. The debate only became more complicated following her death sentence, an already complicated subject among Americans that became exponentially so in 1984, when Barfield's case and personal story became a major talking point for politicians running for office around the state.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for Research!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1984.
