Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by JOE TALBOT of IDLES for an encore episode! An in person episode for this follow up appearance, as the first time round was a Zoom-er in the heat of the lockdown times. So much has changed, for the band, for Joe himself, and the world on the whole. The last 5 years or so has been a cyclone of all sorts, and living through it while keeping a cool and level head is an insurmountable goal. Thankfully creation and art and music are not in short supply, no matter what some of the highers might want us to think, and Joe is proof of that. A wide ranging chat but with an anchor of sorts, which addresses many heavy hitting subjects including class, poverty, politics, socials, reading, mental health, touring, being in a band in general and of course, tinned fish. The amount of times I find myself typing that, good god. HEAVY Music Interviews

British hard-rocking outfit Idles are the real deal. Not only do they staunchly oppose those who fall into their crosshairs, but they are also vocal and proud about such beliefs and stances, with scant regard given for how they are perceived by others. Using their music as a weapon, Idles are brutally honest about their stance on social issues such as racism, bigotry, and most importantly, toxic masculinity as well as Governments who abuse their power. The band released their fifth album, TANGK earlier this year, a body of music that was proclaimed as their most ambitious and striking work yet. Where IDLES were once set on taking the world's piss, squaring off with strong jaws against the perennially entitled, and exercising personal trauma in real-time, they have arrived in this new act to offer the fruits of such perseverance: love, joy, and indeed gratitude for the mere opportunity of existence. After a hugely successful Australian tour in November 2022, Idles return for more sonic action next January for a run of four shows. If you have seen this band before you likely already have tickets, but if not prepare yourself for a frenetic, pulsating journey where music is the only winner.HEAVY sat down with vocalist Joe Talbot to find out more."It's about being present," he mused when asked about expectations. "You've gotta reserve your energy for the stage, and that means making sure you're ready for it. I think getting excited about shows is a weird concept, just because we treat them all the same. Every show's the same. To us, we give everything, I give 100% every day to every show."In the full interview, Joe expressed his feelings of connection and his purpose behind starting a band. He shared his personal struggles with loneliness, fear, addiction, grief, and serious trauma during a time of political disillusionment in his country, emphasizing the importance of empathy and love in forming a community and overcoming these challenges.Joe also discussed Idles' upcoming tour of Australia with US based band, Nation of Language, expressing his admiration for their music and as potential touring partners. We spoke about their live shows and commanding - and giving - respect. We discussed their latest album TANGK and its reception, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Scott is joined by IDLES lead singer Joe Talbot, one of the most exciting frontmen in rock music today! Early in their discussion, they discuss Joe's childhood in Bristol, and his early music memories, including being introduced to Van Morrison's Astral Weeks by his father at a youngg age. Along the way, they touch on his background as a DJ, and his love for U.K. hip-hop. Next, Scott asks him about the early days of IDLES. Joe shares how he supported himself before he could pursue music full-time, and how the band eventually decided to sign to Partisan Records. After giving some insight into the making of IDLES' first album, Joe discusses the band's upcoming record,Tangk produced by Kenny Beats and the legendary Nigel Godrich. Finally, the episode ends with some of Joe's Top 5's, including his top 5 underrated British rock bands, and his top 5 foods we don't have in America!

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Since releasing their critically acclaimed debut album, Brutalism, in 2017, the British band IDLES have dropped four other albums in quick succession. The band's bombastic sound brilliantly balances joy, chaos, and an often critical take on the powers that be. IDLES latest album, TANGK, was produced by the band's guitarist Mark Bowen, Kenny Beats, and Radiohead producer, Nigel Godrich. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Joe Talbot and Mark Bowen from the greenroom of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon about their tumultuous creative partnership. They also explain how Mark helps temper Joe's sometimes passionate rage, and Joe breaks down why he will forever despise England's monarchy. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got an actor-director you'll likely recognize along with the musician-slash-composer who made beautiful sounds for one of his films: Jesse Eisenberg and Emile Mosseri. Eisenberg is best known as an actor; he was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, which is just one of his dozens of credits. You've also seen him in Zombieland, The Squid and the Whale, the Now You See Me movies, and lots of indies. He also starred in the TV drama Fleishman is in Trouble last year alongside Claire Danes and Lizzy Caplan. And if that isn't enough, Eisenberg is also a writer, playwright, and director. His feature debut as a director came earlier this year with When You Finish Saving the World, which began life as Audible original—which he also wrote. The movie stars Julianne Moore and Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard, and it was released by A24, a trademark of quality. And… segue time… music for the film was composed by today's other guest, Emile Mosseri. Now Mosseri spent years in bands, most notably The Dig, but really seems to have found his stride in recent years as a film composer. In 2020 he did the music for both Miranda July's Kajillionaire and for Lee Isaac Chung's Minari, for which Mosseri was Academy-nominated for Best Original Score. He's also worked on Joe Talbot's The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Jonah Hill's Stutz, which you'll hear a little about in this conversation. Earlier this year, Mosseri released his first album of original songs under his own name, which is called Heaven Hunters. It's a really personal, intimate record that sounds best on a pair of quality headphones, as it's sort of cinematic and somehow also small and quiet. Check out one of Eisenberg's favorite songs from Heaven Hunters, this is “My Greedy Heart.” These two get right into a great chat, talking about the various neuroses that fuel their art and stifle their ambition: Mosseri even talks about choosing whether to spend money on his therapist or an awards-season publicist. Eisenberg talks about his experiments using AI on a script—they don't go well—which leads to a discussion about whether AI will impinge on creative jobs like theirs in the future. It's a great, fun chat—enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jesse Eisenberg and Emile Mosseri for chatting. If you liked what you hear, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces at Talkhouse.com. Baaba Maal, Tricky, Jah Wobble and Chi-Chi Nwanoku discuss the influence of African musical roots and traditions in Western classical music, the importance of collaboration, and rhythm and its position in the song writing process. Baaba Maal was born into a family of fishermen in the north of Senegal, but rather than go into the family business, he studied music in Dakar and Paris. Since then, he has recorded 14 albums, worked on the Black Panther soundtrack, and collaborated with Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Mumford and Sons and U2. Tricky is an icon of the hugely influential Bristol music scene. He grew to prominence as a member of the genre-defining act Massive Attack, before launching his own successful solo career working with Neneh Cherry, Björk, and Bobby Gillespie. In 2021 he released his latest album under the name Lonely Guest, which featured Lee “Scratch” Perry, Idles' Joe Talbot, and Maxïmo Park's Paul Smith. Jah Wobble is a music enthusiast, bass guitarist, and singer from East London. He met John Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten, at college, and following the Sex Pistols' break-up, they formed Public Image Ltd. When he left the band, his solo projects led him to collaborate with a broad range of artists including Brian Eno, Chaka Demus, and Baaba Maal. Chi-chi Nwanoku is a classical double bass player from London, who took up the instrument aged 18 after her sprinting career was cut short by injury. As well as being a successful musician, she is also the founder and director of a foundation which supports Black, Asian and ethnically diverse classical musicians, and was awarded a CBE for services to music and diversity in 2022..

Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Oh Mylanta Holy Chalupas: An Unofficial Full House Fuller House Podcast. Today, I am bringing to you a Bonus Episode of one of my favorite shows growing up, besides Full House. I covered the PBS 1995 show Wishbone, all about the little dog with the big imagination. If you grew up in the 90's like me you definitely watched this show and if you were a teenager like me in 1995 you probably also had a crush on Wishbone's owner Joe Talbot like I did. The episode I decided to cover is Wishbone S1E9: Digging Up The Past, which aired on October 17, 1995. In this episode Joe, Ellen and Wishbone meet a woman who lived in their home over 40 years ago, who comes to see the house and find the treasures she left behind as a kid. Wishbone imagines himself as Rip Van Winkle who falls asleep for 20 years and doesn't recognize anything or anybody, and can't get anyone to believe who he is. I chose this episode because it is one of my favorites, it's all about going back and rediscovering your past, and if you're like Dr. Brown (not that Dr. Brown from Back to the Future) you revisit your old childhood home. And if you're lucky the new owners might let you inside and look around and if you're really lucky, you just might be able to check out your old bedroom. The classic story that parallels is of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving. Since these episodes are only 30 minutes long, we only get 15 minutes of Oakdale and Wishbone's story and 15 minutes of a classic literature book giving us just enough nuts and bolts of the story to get the gist of it or check the book out on our own time if we want to know the complete story and fill in the blanks that the show doesn't cover. I hope you enjoy this Podcast Episode! I plan to cover some more episodes of Wishbone in 2023. Maybe even start up my own Wishbone Podcast at some point, We'll see. Have a great weekend everyone and Happy Reading!

Roots to Grooves

"We are not a punk band", is how lead singer Joe Talbot has described the sound of this Bristol band "IDLES", however we can't deny that IDLES does kind of have that punk energy when it comes to their music. Hard hitting, high energy but lyrically poignant, sarcastic and at times darkly comedic."IDLES" were formed in Bristol in the mid 2000's when after DJ'ing around the city a few of the members decided they wanted to create their own music. It took some time, and several line-up changes, before they finally found their sound, kicking off in 2015 with their debut EP's "Welcome" and "Meat/Meta". Since then they have released 3 full length studio albums, toured the world and remained humble. Joe says their ethos has always been to work hard and not seek gratitude, believing that if you stick to your guns, and your passions, everything will ultimately align. There is so much more to know, so we welcome you to join the conversation with Jay and Jesse and listen to some of their top "IDLES" picks. on this latest edition of Roots to Grooves".To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

It's not easy to start all over and pursue a career in a competitive industry without many models of those who are similar to you. But after 9/11, Harry Yoon found himself contemplating his future and wanting to make life choices that would reflect his deepest passions and callings. At 31 years old, he walked away from a career in technology, sold everything, and headed to Hollywood in search of a vocational path in the film industry. Two decades later, Harry has experienced the dream of editing a movie that reflects the authenticity of the Korean immigrant experience which was a part of his own story as a second-generation Korean American: Minari, written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung and currently nominated for six Academy Awards. In this special bonus episode, producer Helen Lee talks with Harry about the risks he took to enter this industry, and how he was able to use his bicultural skills and experiences to survive and thrive. Helen and Harry also discuss the elements of Christian faith interwoven throughout the movie and why it carries a message that the church needs now more than ever. About the Guest: Harry Yoon is a wildly-talented editor based in Los Angeles. His most recent work can be seen on HBO and A24's teen drama “Euphoria,” created and directed by Sam Levinson. Yoon continued to collaborate with A24 as an additional editor on The Last Black Man In San Francisco, which was directed by Joe Talbot and premiered at Sundance. Yoon coedited Detroit, Kathryn Bigelow's feature film about a true-crime incident that occurred during the 1967 Detroit riots. He met Kathryn and his coeditor Billy Goldenberg while serving as the VFX Editor on Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. Yoon edited the historical drama The Best Of Enemies, written and directed by Robin Bissell, starring Sam Rockwell and Taraji P. Henson. He also worked as an additional editor on Universal Pictures's First Man, directed by Damien Chazelle, which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and starred Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy.
