John Conte Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson What crazy fun to sit down with my old dear friend, bassist John Conte, whom I hadn't seen in decades. How is it possible that he appears to have aged barely a day? Seriously! John took us back to childhood days, his jazz-singing mother, Rosemary, his early days on guitar, and his brother Steve at first on drums. Their first band when John was 8 or 9, their early songwriting, including John's first song, Maryanne, Sittin on a Log, which he gave us a little taste of. He was a boy with a dream of playing arenas with rock stars. He told us how they flipped instruments, with John choosing bass. His college days, jazz-infused, where he gigged around with stellar players like Terence Blanchard. We tripped down memory lane, where we met, in the md-80s at The Rock 'n Roll Cafe on Bleecker Street, 1/2 of The Brothers of Conte, as I affectionately came to call them, with his brother Steve, they were weekly regulars whenever their schedules allowed. John was in Blood, Sweat & Tears, his first major gig, at the time, and told us all about that. Great stories there, including playing Madison Square Garden. Not bad for a 23-year-old. During their tenure at the Rock 'N Roll, late one rainy night they brought in their friend, Phoebe Snow, a life changer for me who had been a diehard fan since high school. The Phoeb's and I became fast friends, and I have the boys to thank for that as well as for years of amazing live music there, and at Spo-dee-o-dee's, Woody's, RockGirl, The Marquee, The Cafe Wha, True Blue and The China Club, where they were also a part of my RockGirl Jam Band. A stellar bassist, with an easy temperament and oh so easy on the eyes, it was always a joy when John was around. I made him tell his requisite Chuck Berry story. At that same time, the Conte brothers, as part of The Hudson River Rats, were laying the foundation for much of the session and road work that was to follow. Like Finding himself in the studio with Tony Visconti and David Bowie. John's description of hearing Bowie vocalize in his ear gave me goosebumps. He talked about laying down tracks with Peter Wolf and Ian Hunter, getting to jam with loads of his heroes. The Conte Brothers connected with Kyf Brewer and Company of Wolves were borne. They did some showcases, got signed, did a tour with Richard Marx, and foreshadowed John's future, one with Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes. John talked us through touring with Joan Osbourne (beautiful words here), Roseanne Cash, and Southside Johnny choosing him in 2007, a gig that would take him through to present day. There was a short tour with Billy Joel during his 2012 comeback with our friend, Tommy Byrnes, lovely to hear John's take on it, and great stories about his tenure playing with The Disciples of Soul, the house band for the American Music Honors where he got to play with honorees, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, John Mellencamp and Dion, as well as host, Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt. John's shared the stage with Bruce numerous times before, memorably for an impromptu 45-minute set with Southside. John's recounting of that and of playing with Peter Frampton (and Sheryl Crow) at the Sandy Hook Promise Benefit is another moving, goosebump-inducing tale. I loved every single second with my old friend. It's thrilling to see how his life has played and continues to play out. The young boy living his dream. Southside Johnyy's future may be unsure, but John's certainly isn't. He's always got multiple projects cooking, his own music in the works - check him out here johnconte.bandcamp.com and here Facebook.com/johncontebass I just adore the boy. He'll always be a rockboy to me and damn, he sure still looks like one. Discover who wrote most of the Rascals songs. Find out what ex lead singer and founder Felix Cavaliere is doing now and learn all about one of the greatest bands of the '60s. Felix Cavaliere is a celebrated musician, songwriter, and vocalist, widely regarded as a pioneer of blue-eyed soul. Born in Pelham, New York, Cavaliere was introduced to music at an early age, taking classical piano lessons under his mother's encouragement. While initially drawn to classical music, he soon discovered his passion for rhythm and blues, inspired by legends like Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye. Cavaliere pursued pre-med studies at Syracuse University but found himself increasingly immersed in music, forming his first band, The Escorts, while still in college. His decision to follow his musical aspirations led him to New York City's thriving music scene in the early 1960s. In 1965, Cavaliere co-founded The Rascals (originally called The Young Rascals) with Eddie Brigati, Gene Cornish, and Dino Danelli. The group became synonymous with the era's evolving rock and soul movement, producing a string of iconic hits that combined soulful melodies with socially conscious lyrics. Cavaliere's distinctive voice and masterful Hammond organ playing defined hits like "Good Lovin'," which topped the charts in 1966, followed by enduring classics like "Groovin'," "A Beautiful Morning," and "People Got to Be Free." The latter, inspired by the civil rights movement, became an anthem for unity and social justice. As the principal songwriter for The Rascals, Felix played a crucial role in shaping the band's innovative sound, which bridged the gap between rock and R&B. The Rascals enjoyed commercial success, releasing six gold albums and earning a devoted following. However, internal tensions and changing musical landscapes led to the band's breakup in the early 1970s. After The Rascals disbanded, Cavaliere embarked on a solo career, releasing several albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His solo work, including tracks like "Only a Lonely Heart Sees," reflected his evolving artistry, blending soulful ballads with pop-rock influences. Felix also collaborated with numerous artists, including Todd Rundgren and Steve Cropper, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile and respected musician. In 1997, Cavaliere and his fellow Rascals were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their place in music history. The band reunited in 2013 for a critically acclaimed multimedia concert series, Once Upon a Dream, produced by Steven Van Zandt. The reunion celebrated their groundbreaking legacy and brought their music to a new generation of fans. Beyond his achievements with The Rascals, Cavaliere remains an active performer and advocate for music education. He continues to tour, sharing his timeless songs with audiences worldwide. Cavaliere's influence on rock and soul endures, with his groundbreaking contributions inspiring countless artists and fans. Today Felix Cavaliere calls Nashville home base, where he is constantly collaborating and writing new material. He's also finishing his memoir and has an active tour schedule with Felix Cavaliere's Rascals. What a CreepSeason 26, Episode 5 Sun City and Apartheid in South Africa Sun City is a luxury resort and casino complex in South Africa. During the apartheid era (1948-1990s), it became infamous for hosting international artists despite the global cultural boycott of South Africa. The South African government promoted Sun City as a major entertainment destination, but for many, it symbolized the oppression and exploitation of apartheid. Artists United Against Apartheid was a collective of musicians who came together in 1985 to raise awareness and protest apartheid, mainly targeting the Sun City resort. Steven Van Zandt, a musician and member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, and record producer Arthur Baker spearheaded the group. They were outraged by the continued performances of international artists at Sun City despite the call for a cultural boycott of South Africa.Trigger Warning: RacismSources for this episodeZinn Education Project: https://www.zinnedproject.org/materials/sun-city-artists-against-apartheid/ andhttps://www.zinnedproject.org/materials/strangers-in-their-own-country and https://www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/steve-biko/Black Past.org: https://www.blackpast.org/global-african-history/south-african-students-organization-saso/The African Activist Archive: https://africanactivist.msu.edu/ and https://africanactivist.msu.edu/organization/210-813-12/African Access Review: https://africaaccessreview.org/Rolling Stone: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/steven-van-zandt-sun-city-reissue-951087/, https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/apartheid-rock-108260/, and https://www.ronstadt-linda.com/artrs83.htmRolling Stone Podcast Interview with Steven Van Zandt: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0U8duHoJCDxM0qLLdhzjOlTeach Rock: https://teachrock.org/lesson/sun-city-a-musical-force-against-apartheid-part-1/Cool Cape Travel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyJQwCI7-oYArtists United Against Apartheid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fR2r8Qlyyk60 Minutes interview with Steven Van Zandt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOp-rLSRXUoAfrica's a Country.com: https://africasacountry.com/2020/01/linda-ronstadt-is-still-playing-sun-city#:~:text=Although%20Ronstadt%20was%20conflicted%20about,percent%20pure%2Dwhite.%E2%80%9DU Music.com: https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/little-steven-sun-city-protest-song/Little Steven Interview (2019) https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/summer-of-sorcery-little-steven-interview/Rosa Mannon (YouTube)/The Making of Sun City (1985) https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=3a6b220f597eeedb&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIIxP_ymW_r7DZB-jNqvr6ccWlgxZw:1724106272458&q=Sun+city+apartheid+documentary&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwim3LKvjIKIAxVfhIkEHf5BH6oQ1QJ6BAhaEAE&biw=1366&bih=599&dpr=1#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:784ac663,vid:CmJC6GcVDn0,st:0Asbury Park Press: https://www.app.com/story/entertainment/music/2021/08/12/little-steven-van-zandt-sun-city-hip-hop-rap-rappers-south-africa/8113803002/ABC News: https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/steven-van-zandt-sun-city-helped-break-apartheid/story?id=21180715Variety: https://variety.com/2020/music/news/little-steven-interview-sun-city-apartheid-political-1203528043/Born a Crime by Trevor Noah Not a CreepThere needs to be a ceasefire in Gaza.We can't make those decisions, but we can call our representatives and let them know how we feel. The Stone Pony and its hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey are iconic settings in the story of some of America's greatest rock musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, and Southside Johnny Lyon. The Pony's path from high-risk passion project to iconic venue was, however, anything but direct; from its founding in 1974, the club was caught in the greater forces at work in late-20th century America.   So how did the Stone Pony thrive when so many other venues closed? And what set Asbury Park apart from so many other American towns? In this episode, The New York Times' Nick Corasaniti joins us to talk about his new book I Don't Want To Go Home: The Oral History of the Stone Pony (Harpers, 2024) and what he learned from interviewing Bruce Springsteen and dozens of other musicians and industry professionals who helped make the club into what it is today.   If you enjoy this episode, make sure to check out our episodes on The Kinks with Mark Doyle and The Allman Brothers' At Fillmore East with Bob Beatty.   This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher.

fWotD Episode 2641: Darkness on the Edge of Town Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 28 July 2024 is Darkness on the Edge of Town.Darkness on the Edge of Town is the fourth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released on June 2, 1978, by Columbia Records. The album was recorded after a series of legal disputes between Springsteen and his former manager Mike Appel, during sessions in New York City with the E Street Band from June 1977 to March 1978. Springsteen and Jon Landau co-produced, with assistance from bandmate Steven Van Zandt. For the album's lyrics and music, Springsteen took inspiration from sources as diverse as John Steinbeck novels, John Ford films, punk rock, and country music. Musically, the album strips the Wall of Sound production of its predecessor, Born to Run, for a rawer hard rock sound emphasizing the band as a whole. The lyrics on Darkness focus on ill-fortuned characters who fight back against overwhelming odds. Compared to Springsteen's previous records, the characters are older and the songs are less tied to the Jersey Shore area. The cover photograph of Springsteen was taken by Frank Stefanko in his New Jersey home.Released three years after Born to Run, Darkness did not sell as well as its predecessor but reached number five in the US, while its singles—"Prove It All Night", "Badlands", and "The Promised Land"—performed modestly. Springsteen promoted the album on the Darkness Tour, his largest tour up to that point. Upon release, critics praised the album's music and performances but were divided on the lyrical content. It placed on several critics' lists ranking the best albums of the year.In later decades, Darkness has attracted acclaim as one of Springsteen's best works and one that anticipated later records. It has since appeared on various professional lists of the greatest albums of all time. Outtakes from the recording sessions were given to other artists, held-over for Springsteen's next album, The River, or later released on compilations. Darkness was reissued in 2010, accompanied by a documentary detailing the album's making. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:03 UTC on Sunday, 28 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Darkness on the Edge of Town on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Joanna.

Without Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen might not be who he is today. The natural follow-up to Springsteen's hugely successful album The River should have been the hit-packed Born in the U.S.A. But instead, in 1982, he came out with an album consisting of a series of dark songs he had recorded by himself, for himself. But more than forty years later, Nebraska is arguably Springsteen's most important record--the lasting clue to understanding not just his career as an artist and the vision behind it, but also the man himself. Nebraska is rough and unfinished, recorded on cassette tape with a simple four-track recorder by Springsteen, alone in his bedroom, just as the digital future was announcing itself. And yet Springsteen now considers it his best album. Nebraska expressed a turmoil that was reflective of the mood of the country, but it was also a symptom of trouble in the artist's life, the beginnings of a mental breakdown that Springsteen would only talk about openly decades after the album's release. Warren Zanes spoke to many people for Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska (Crown, 2023), including Bruce Springsteen himself. He also interviewed more than a dozen celebrated artists and musical insiders, from Rosanne Cash to Steven Van Zandt, about their reactions to the album. Zanes interweaves these conversations with inquiries into the myriad cultural touchpoints, including Terrence Malick's Badlands and the short stories of Flannery O'Conner, that influenced Springsteen as he was writing the album's haunting songs. The result is a textured and revelatory account of not only a crucial moment in the career of an icon but also a record that upended all expectations and predicted a home-recording revolution. Warren Zanes is the New York Times bestselling author of Petty: The Biography. As a member of the Del Fuegos, he has shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen, and continues to write and record music. Zanes holds a PhD in visual and cultural studies from the University of Rochester and presently teaches at New York University. He is a Grammy-nominated producer of the PBS series Soundbreaking and was a consulting producer on the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom. In this longform weekend podcast - Glenn talks about the injustice of the Tennessee House expelling 2 Black Democrats over their assault weapons protest and the justice of musician Steven Van Zandt who created the group Artists United Against Apartheid. Then; with so many hearings and crimes surrounding Donald Trump it gets confusing! Glenn untangles the mesh and gives us a clear timeline on what should happen next. He then talks about the returning tricks from House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan - who has now issued subpoenas to try to intervene in the New York criminal case against Donald Trump. Next Glenn mentions the latest with Mike Pence - his privilege claims have been rejected by a federal judge. He wonders if Pence will finally tell the truth to the grand jury about Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Then finally he recollects an inspiring moment from his past when he was a prosecutor that reminds us hope for the repressed is possible.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
