Today we welcome the man who was at the absolute centre of TV and celebrity culture in the 1990s. Long before TFI Friday and Britpop there was a Friday night Channel 4 show that drew an enormous viewership among the young, and that show was 'The Word', a television show helmed by Mr Terry Christian. Starting out in radio at the age of just 19, Terry has had a remarkable career that put him front and centre of the Manchester music scene, and later in a position to fight for those bands to gain exposure on Channel 4. It hasn't been easy and Terry pulls no punches in telling his story. Listen as he regales us with tales of hanging out with James Brown and Robin Williams, and the true story behind Oliver Reed's infamous drunken interview, as well as that legendary awkward Bill Hicks interaction. All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis GunnPlease buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialTerry's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/terry.tvchristianTwitter: https://x.com/terrychristianFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/terrychristianpublicfigureProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Autumn 1996. Royal divorce, Mad Cow disease, Take That helplines, TFI Friday. But it wasn't all bad news, oh no – the pop charts were continuing to dazzle and amaze the CD buying public! Indeed, if we weren't snapping up those hits on £5 CD singles (both one and two, to complete the set) we were most definitely picking up a copy of the latest volume of everyone's favourite compilation series, NOW35. And what delights across the forty tracks would you find? Girl Power taking over the world with that (not actually) difficult second single, George Michael looking for love in all sorts of place, Boybands (some on the way in, some heading further eastwards!) And enough dance anthems to fill any bedroom disco or sparkling nightclub. And a fair smattering of, what the music press were still most definitely describing, as the all conquering, crowd pleasing, flag waving, two-fingered swagger Britpop. But was a change on the horizon as the year of Euro 96, Knebworth and a plethora of Union Jacks moved towards its conclusion? Was the retrograde triumphalism sliding towards its own runout groove? And if so, were the clues to the Next Big Thing to be found on this album? As the team at NOW always successfully managed to do in their gloriously curated way, most definitely!Back to Now guest Neil Kulkarni has been writing about pop since 1994, starting out at the weekly Melody Maker before moving on to a host of magazines, newspapers and websites as well as lecturing in music journalism and releasing music with his band The Moonbears.Amongst hits and headlines from Spice Girls, Pulp, Neneh Cherry, Underworld and others, we also explore the huge influence that r'n'b was having on the popworld, find out how to wind-up indie fans (it involves 2 unlimited), discover the bands that music journalists can't admit to not liking (doesn't involve 2 unlimited) and be amazed at the connection between a solar eclipse, Lynx Africa and a James Bond baddie (yes really). And find out why pretty much every ‘indie' guitar act on NOW35 won't be returning our calls. John Lenahan came to Britain from his native Philadelphia for a short trip and has never quite made it back.   John originally grabbed the headlines as the first person in 85 years to be expelled from the Magic Circle. The 3-card trick he exposed on How Do They Do That? is no more than a gambling con, but John took the rap and enjoyed the publicity.   2004 saw him starring in a new primetime BBC1 show, Secrets of Magic. His own BBC2 series, Stuff The White Rabbit, achieved record ratings for the slot. Other TV credits include presenting the travelogue Open Road, playing the voice of the toaster in Red Dwarf, and guest appearances on everything from TFI Friday to Celebrity Squares. He also fronted HoaxBusters, an ITV network show lifting the lid on scams and hoaxes. John has performed onstage all over the world, from Beijing and Dubai to Dublin. He has toured alongside Jack Dee, Victoria Wood, Lenny Henry and Michael Ball. Besides all this, Lenahan is one of the most successful corporate entertainers in the country. Apart from his show-stealing cabaret, he has made kitchens appear, taught Bank of England staff to juggle, read thousands of minds and levitated a 20-pound Toblerone bar. He was the first person on record to perform magic live over the Internet, for BT. John has been described by The Guardian as ‘the mascot of a magical renaissance' - and by Jackie Collins as ‘extremely good looking'. John Lenahan lives in Cricklewood, London. In a world dominated by awards, he is proud to have once been voted Time Out Street Magician of the Year.   John's novels: Shadowmagic , The Prince of Hazel & Oak and Sons of Macha are now available in one omnibus -The Shadowmagic Trilogy - published by Harper Collins and is out in paperback iBook, Nook and Kindle formats. The Magic Circle has finally recognised their mistake and reinstated John!

Welcome one and all to the Track One Side One Podcast! This weeks guest is a massive one for me, in regards to musical influences in my formative years. Wojtek was the bassist and primary songwriter in Symposium, who for my money, were the best live band of the whole Britrock era in the late 90s. From playing Reading Festival 3 years running, to supporting Metallica, magazine covers across all of the rock and indie press, to performing on TFI Friday and Top Of The Pops, they did it all, backed up with an arsenal of total bangers like 'Farewell To Twilight', 'The Answer To Why I Hate You' and 'Disappear'. Being in my late teens, It was the perfect soundtrack to late nights and loud times. Woj has travelled the world playing music post Symposium too in Bjorn Again and also released his 2nd solo album in 2016. This is a truly wonderful chat, with LOT'S of Prog nattering from Mansun to Maiden to King Crimson, onto how the Batman soundtrack may well be Princes most under rated lp. #6 Bumming C3PO - Richard talks briefly to a semi-retired postman and considers bumping his guest to chat with him more, but instead introduces perhaps the perfect RHLSTP guest David Mitchell. It's David's second time in the hot seat (though the chairs have got nicer since he was last here) and Richard is determined not to be as childish and rude to him as he was last time. But will he be able to keep a lid on the simmering mayonnaise vat of bitterness? Find out if David swears during sex, if he would allow himself to be raped by a ghost, why he's so obsessed with war that he's apparently wearing a poppy in January and if he enjoyed working the cloakroom for TFI Friday. There are also some more serious chats about the mindset of someone who paps a couple going for a walk with their baby and why there is so much antipathy towards Ben Elton.

So, Chris Evans, the current presenter of adult-contemporary BBC Radio 2’s breakfast show - the largest breakfast show in Europe, by cume - has announced that he’s leaving the station later this year.   He’s off to Virgin Radio, where he’s going to do the breakfast show.   Side note: it’s the same “Virgin Radio” brand, owned by Virgin Enterprises, but not the same station. The original Virgin Radio was bought (and sold) by Chris Evans himself, but after a few more ownership changes, it was rebranded as Absolute Radio. The Virgin Radio brand is now licensed to News UK, part of Rupert Murdoch’s empire. Evans once described business discussions with Murdoch as “dealing with the devil”.   The current Virgin Radio is a station on DAB Digital Radio, and has no outlet on FM. It broadcasts - in mono - on a transmitter network that only currently covers 77% of households.   It’s a competitive market, too. It’s one of 44 national radio stations in the UK, and typically a radio listener will have a further fifteen or so local radio stations available too on their DAB set - and that’s before the obvious additional choices of Spotify and podcasts.   Virgin Radio has 413,000 weekly listeners (BBC Radio 2 has 14.9m).   So, why on earth would Evans make the leap?   It strikes me that there are a few questions here:   Is radio’s most important weapon the talent? Evans is a known presenter, and will pull in the audience: and this is why he’s been hired by News UK. Is music a differentiator any more? Stations can promote their music position as much as they like, but real music fans have Spotify for that, and the rest of us want music that’s okay alongside people we like listening to. Do talent these days want more creative freedom? Even during his time at the BBC, Chris Evans has wanted to shape his own destiny - running a passion project, a car festival, alongside his breakfast show (and then a relatively disastrous tenure at reheating Top Gear and TFI Friday). There is much more freedom with a commercial company than a public service broadcaster; and with the internet, much more opportunity still. Would Evans have leapt to work at a station called “The Badger” or “Hot 89”? I’d argue that the Virgin brand was fundamental - not just to attract new listeners, but to attract talent, too. News UK own a set of local FM radio stations across the UK (which, in total, are available to 6m listeners (and currently reach about 900,000 weekly). Would these be better served by rebroadcasting Virgin Radio, which recent rule changes would allow? News UK also own, of course, The Sun and The Times. There are some cross-promotion possibilities here. But how much money is News UK likely to want to invest?   This is real investment in radio - especially digital radio. I hope it works out for everyone concerned. Support the show. This was, possibly, the most misguided move ever taken by Warner Bros. A full-blooded American interpretation of a quintessentially British show. The Avengers (not that one) boasts the excellent skills of a whole host of talented actors, and Uma Thurman. Critics hated it… audiences stayed away… I surely can’t be that bad. [spoilers] We had to record a little extra, to make up time and add some much needed positivity, giving you an insight into BFGC decision making along the way. But is it possible for Jim Broadbent to give a bad performance? Were Shaun Ryder’s appearances on TFI Friday the reason he was given no dialogue? And has Sean Connery made a worse film than Zardoz? RHLSTP #94: David Mitchell - Bumming C3PO. Richard talks briefly to a semi-retired postman and considers bumping his guest to chat with him more, but instead introduces perhaps the perfect RHLSTP guest, David Mitchell. But it's possibly the funniest episode yet, with Mitchell, once again, giving possibly the definitive answers to some of the emergency questions. What a treat. We also got Henry Hoffman from Fiddlesticks and the most stylish man in games in as a Super-Special Guest. Following an appearance on the BBC 1 Show ‘How Do They Do That?’ explaining a the Three Card Monte. He considered it to be, as did many others, to be more of a gambling con than a trick. It has been widely recommended.
