Any podcast episode that begins with “I was born in Dalton, Georgia, the carpet capital of the world…” must be a good one! Throughout Season 2 of this series, host Doug Powell is speaking with guests who have established themselves as leaders in design and then have become leaders in a completely different space. Nobody embodies this leadership journey more than Doug's guest for this episode, Bill Grant. Bill is the founder and president of Grant Design Collaborative, the award-winning design firm he has led for over 30 years, and he's a former national president of AIGA, the professional association for design in the U.S. Bill is also serving his second term as mayor of Canton, Georgia, the small town outside of Atlanta where he lives and works.   In this wide-ranging conversation, Bill discusses his early influences as a designer, and how he has brought his core qualities as a designer into public service and civic leadership with remarkable success. In a time when many small towns are struggling, Canton is thriving under Bill Grant's leadership, and now proudly carries the moniker of the coolest small town in America.

History shows that Bill went onto have a successful career as a professional bodybuilder. In 1968 he entered his first serious competition Mr. USA and placed a respectful 6th. Then, he completed the very same year in the Mr. America where he placed 17th. This shook Bill into a realization that he needed to train harder to come back stronger for following year. There was a slow and steady progression through the ranks as Bill climbed to the top of his game in 1972 where he walked home with 1st place in the Mr. World. He again took 1st place in 1974 Mr. World and Mr. International. Bill's career has been filled with top places for over two decades with competitions not only in the United States but also across Europe. With over 44 professional competitions under his belt, it's clear to see that Bill's a true champion.

I'm so glad we were able to have Brian and Bill on the podcast to talk about using video in your marketing to tell powerful stories. While we believe that the question of whether or not you should utilize video is over (you should be using), the question is now whether or not you want to be using video well. And then, knowing where your audience is will allow you to take that awesome video and put it in front of the right people. Without knowing where your audience is leaves you with just a video and that helps no one, right? Join myself, Brian and Bill on today's episode as we talk about finding where your audience is so that you can market to them well. As Told By is a video marketing agency started by Bill Grant from Cinema Couture and Brian Arnold from Coldwell Banker of the Carolinas. They came together in 2019 with a mission of not only making great videos for clients but helping them figure out what to do with those videos once they're finished. They call themselves the marketing director's secret weapon. The goal is to work within existing marketing teams to help get the most out of great videos. Prominent clients include Capgemini, United Way of the Midlands, The Salvation Army, Heathwood Hall and the University of South Carolina to name a few.

Albert Whitley is a senior art director at SapientNitro and the current vice-president of AIGA Atlanta. During our conversation, Albert dropped a lot of pearls of wisdom about the design industry. No doubt that comes from his many years of work under some of the greats like Bill Grant of Grant Design Collaborative and Cynthia Jones of Jones Worley. We even touched on AIGA and diversity in the graphic design industry. Hear what Albert has to say in this week's interview! Albert Whitley on Twitter

The Not Too Bad Bluegrass Band performs at the Library of Congress. Speaker Biography: The Not Too Bad Bluegrass Band formed in 1987, playing local venues around Bloomington, Indiana. Original members included Jeff White, who went on to play with superstars like Alison Krauss and Vince Gill; singer-songwriter Bob Lucas; and Lisa Germano, who later played fiddle with John Mellencamp's band. The current members have their own musical history. Brian Lappin played with bluegrass legends Jimmy Martin and Earl Taylor, and the bands The Ragin' Texans and The Crawdads. His tasteful banjo playing reflects the solid influences of Earle Scruggs and J.D. Crowe. Doug Harden has played mandolin since 1969. His early years were spent at the old Bean Blossom Jamboree barn, and in the Brown County Band. Doug has also spent time in the original Kentucky Ramblers and the band Pine Mountain. Greg Norman started at a local jam session and later joined the Off the Line bluegrass band and singer-songwriter Janne Henshaw's band. Kent Todd was trained in classical violin, and was steered toward bluegrass by his father Scott, also a bluegrass musician; he has played with Bill Grant and Dehila Belle, Michael Cleveland and the Blue Hollow Band, Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers, and currently is also a member of the Troubled Waters Band. The youngest member of the NTBBB, Brady Stogdill, is a member of the original International Bluegrass Music Association's Young Acoustic All Stars; his father Dean was a great banjo player, and he has learned to play almost anything with strings on it.

Bill Grant, Witness Perry Mason is a fictional defense attorney who originally appeared in detective fiction by Erle Stanley Gardner. This long running radio drama had several actors who played the famous lawyer starting  with Bartlett Robinson and then followed by Santos Ortega, Donald Briggs, and finally John Larkin who played the famous attorney after 1947.The radio portrayal of  Perry Mason is a far more involved lawyer then the one who became famous on TV, the radio version  would rather swap gunshots with evildoers than sit in a boring courtroom, waiting for the deliberation!  The show was only 10 minutes and was more intense and favored action than courtroom drama. Perry Mason ran 12 seasons and moved to TV in the late 1950's with the now famous portrayal by Raymond Burr. Each show follows a continues story line similar to soap operas.
