Welcome back to The Round 12 MOTIVATIONAL MASTERY Podcast Show! Episode #128 “LEADER VERSUS BOSS!” Ok. This episode is a Hot One! It has a bit of steam coming from its head and it could possibly stimulate conversation. Whenever we think or talk about how we treat each other and how we define our positions in the hierarchy of social existence, some people have varyingly different perspectives than some others. This always seems to contribute to us not getting along as well as we could, and certainly not being as effective as we could be either. The goal of this podcast is always about growth, development and some level of mastery. This episode is just another brick in the wall. Take a listen, think a thought, and come up with your own sense of who's the “Boss” and who's “The Leader!” Then choose which one you follow, or which one you are. Click into your bindings as we launch from the highest peaks of the North Cascades with ski mountaineering historian Lowell Skoog, author of Written in the Snows: Across Time on Skis in the Pacific Northwest, published by Mountaineers Books and 2023 winner of the National Outdoor Book Award (NOBA) for historical writing. Born to a family of Nordic ski jumpers who later pioneered endurance routes traversing remote mountain reaches, Lowell's stories abound in evocative details as well as critical characters like Wolf Bauer, Olga Bolstad, Hans Otto Giese, Bill Maxwell and Milnor Roberts. Chronicling the birth of Pacific Northwest skiing from a little-known sport of immigrants to cultural cornerstone, Lowell conveys the wonderment of Scandinavian settlers waking to Seattle's first big snow in 1916; the camaraderie enjoyed by founders of early Pacific Northwest ski clubs; and the hijinks of the 1934 Silver Skis race. His characters range from backwoods trappers to the heroic fighters of the United States Army's 10th Mountain Division—some of whom would later develop North America's postwar ski industry. Amidst our current backdrop of climate change, Lowell's snowy memoirs—confessions of sorrow and sanctuary—are also a poignant record of a threatened pastime. "Being up in the mountains and having that connection with the natural world…is really healthy. It can help you forget about short term concerns; you are in a place that's been there forever…and will be there forever.” ~Lowell Skoog

So many business owners fall into the trap of focusing only on the end outcome: are sales up or down, did the product sell or not sell, are we profitable? But in reality, we should be focused on measuring the stepping stones along the way that they can control: sales leads collected, on time delivery, managing discretionary expenses, etc.    In this, business is much like sports. Focusing solely on the end outcome (did you win or lose?) can only get you so far. You also need to focus on what you're doing in the lead-up to the games. Our guest this week is an expert in preparing athletes for those moments — and helping them measure progress along the way.    Bill Maxwell is the Director of Athletic Performance for Olympic sports, with a primary focus on men's basketball, at the University of Iowa. Before that, he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Kansas, where he oversaw strength and conditioning programs for the Jayhawk Olympic sports, including basketball, baseball, and swimming and diving.   Listen to the full episode for more on how a Division I strength and conditioning coach measures success within his program, the difference between outcome goals and process goals (and how to set both), some of the technological advances that have been made in the strength and conditioning industry, and more.   Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn:    How Bill got started in strength and conditioning as a profession Some of the ways that the strength and conditioning world has progressed over the past couple decades The impact of wearable technology for athletes How Bill and the rest of the team at Iowa measures athletes' nervous systems, and the impact that rest has on performance  The most important key performance indicators that athletic programs should measure More about the reactive strength index, and how it serves as the standard for the student-athletes at Iowa How Bill answers the question “how do you know your program is working?” The mindset shifts it takes to be a top-performing athlete The difference between outcome goals and process goals, and why both are important within an athletics program How sleep impacts performance  Some of the personal habits Bill has integrated to keep himself at his best every day  How much water intake you should really have The 3 action words Bill tries to practice each day, and what each of those words mean to him   Resources Mentioned in This Episode:  Iowa Olympics Sports Strength & Conditioning Bill Maxwell on LinkedIn “Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones” by James Clear “Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't” by Simon Sinek “The Brain Always Wins: Improving Your Life Through Better Brain Management” by Dr. John P. This week we are welcoming director of Olympic strength and conditioning at the University of Iowa, Bill Maxwell. Bill is in charge of all programs at Iowa except Football and is specifically responsible for Men's Basketball and Women and Men's Golf. He is a super experienced strength and conditioning coach with a wealth of knowledge. These coaches have obviously have to be great at getting their athletes in the best physical shape possible so they must have a wealth of knowledge in physiology and how the body responds to specific workouts, but they also have to understand the best practices in motivating individuals to give it their all throughout their training. In this episode we focus more on the leadership qualities one must possess to run a successful program. How do you inspire a group of people with such diverse backgrounds, abilities, and intrinsic motivations in order for the team to be a success? How do you get people to bond together in a positive way in the formation of a team? What are various strategies that help push athletes to give it their all every single time they are asked to perform? I'm super excited to share this episode with you guys!! We recorded about a month and a half ago through a mutual friend Cameron Dorn (who's AWESOME) and I was really excited to geek out about leadership, Hawkeye Basketball, and athlete performance. Hope you guys enjoy!! Huge thanks to Bill for sharing his time and knowledge! In this throwback from the FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION podcast archives, Mark and Chris discuss The Greatest American Heroine pilot episode that originally aired back in 1986! During 1986, the original principal cast reunited for a pilot movie for a new NBC series to be named The Greatest American Heroine, which did not result in a new series, and the pilot was never broadcast by NBC. Ultimately, the pilot was re-edited as an episode of the original series (complete with original opening credits and theme), and added to syndication sets of the original series aired on several local television stations in the late 80s, for which it is the final episode. Immediately after the beginning credits, the episode's title card is superimposed over a nighttime view of the Los Angeles skyline, reading "The Greatest American Hero" before appending the letters "i n e" individually to the sound of the NBC chimes. The chimes were a nod to NBC and its president, Brandon Tartikoff, who had expressed interest in reviving the series. The pilot movie reveals that several years after the final episode, Ralph's secret identity was finally revealed to the public, resulting in his becoming a celebrity. This angers the aliens who gave him the suit, and they charge him with finding a new hero to wear the costume and use its powers for fighting evil. Once the transfer is made, they explain, all memory of Ralph's exploits will be purged from the world's memory and remembered only by Ralph, Pam, and Bill. Bill begins their search by researching people with desired hero qualities, but Ralph finds a young woman named Holly Hathaway (Mary Ellen Stuart), an elementary school teacher who spends her off-hours time looking for lost kittens, raising environmental awareness, and serving as a foster mother. Bill, Pam, and Ralph meet in the desert, where Ralph tells Bill about Holly. He reacts visibly to his new partner being a "skirt" before Holly arrives, flying in wearing a new version of the suit made for her, and she pledges to help Bill. The original trio say their final farewells, and even the stoic Maxwell reveals his true emotions as he says goodbye to Ralph and calling Pam a trooper—"...one of the best!" Holly reacts emotionally to the fond farewells, but breaks the somber mood as she accidentally pulls the door off of Bill's sedan. The rest of the episode deals with her learning how to use the suit with Bill Maxwell's guidance, and the pair trying to develop a working relationship. It ends with Holly talking to her foster daughter about Bill, saying he is a good person; Bill, overhearing what she says about him, speaks into a recorder he uses as his "diary" to suggest that maybe she is the right person to wear the suit after all.
